There you have it, the Powerball winning numbers. Check over. Triple check. Just to be sure. what is it worth 100 million dollars? 200 million dollars? Regardless, your life has changed.

What now? New cars? McMansion? Private jet? Yacht? How about a new home for all your loved ones?

The sad reality is that many winners of the biggest lottery prizes — as well as those who receive a stroke of luck from an inheritance, the acquisition of a successful business, or a major professional sports contract — are broke within a few years.

“The problem,” explains accountant Jennifer Lane, “is that people with unaudited expenses just go nuts.”

SunTrust financial advisor Preston O’Neal agrees: “The mistakes lottery winners make is they buy a bunch of stuff. They buy toys in advance and don’t secure the income.”

We’ve all heard that there’s a much better chance of being struck by lightning than actually winning a multi-million dollar lottery prize. But what if? What should wealth managers do with our newly acquired wealth?

The answer: step on the brakes. Slow down and come up with a plan.

“I’m not saying you won’t go crazy,” says Lane, who practices at Decosimo/Vaden, a CPA firm that serves several Music Row millionaires.

“But don’t freak out about all this. Then you can have fun for a long, long time.”

So here’s the plan. Let’s say you won this $600 million prize. After taxes (about 40 percent) and a penalty for the lump sum payout, that’s just over $200 million.

Financial advisors say the first thing on your list after you sign your ticket should be to put together a team you trust. It should include at least a tax attorney, a financial advisor and an auditor.

Then take half the money — in this case, about $100 million — and put it into a savings plan. This will be the capital that will generate the interest you will live on for the rest of your life.

The economy is struggling and interest rates are really low, but even with a conservative 1 percent interest rate, you’re left with $600,000 a year after taxes. That’s about $50,000 a month.

But financial planners also warn that $50,000 a month — more than most make in a year — still isn’t enough to own multiple vacation homes, buy a jet and rent out Las Vegas hotspots every weekend.

“Probably where many winners go wrong, they suddenly catapult themselves into a Donald Trump-like lifestyle,” said financial planner Lechelle Moore, senior vice president of private wealth management at SunTrust.

“A few hundred thousand dollars a year is a fabulous lifestyle, but it’s not Donald Trump’s lifestyle. It is very generous but not outrageous.”

Lane adds: “Just start living normally. In no case do you start living the life of a rock star.”

Also, make sure you pay any taxes owed on profits, advisers say, and pay off any debt — credit cards, car loans, student loans, and mortgages.

Most want to stop working, but that requires a plan to keep spending in check, planner experts say.

“Budget, I know it’s a dirty word,” Lane says. “But if you don’t want to go back to work, you have to answer for yourself.”

But not so responsible. Remember, you only pocketed half of your winnings.

“There has to be crazy money that you can have fun with and not worry about,” Lane says. “Enjoy it and share it with your family.”

So sure, buy yourself a nice house and car, maybe even a boat.

But advisors warn against multi-family homes in exotic locations, buying private jets, yachts or starting companies on a whim. The nouveau riche sometimes don’t realize how much money can be invested in the upkeep of expensive toys.

“These large items come with high maintenance costs. Heating or cooling just some of these larger homes can be outrageous,” Lane says.

And dealing with relatives and friends can be difficult.

“Friends, family, churches, all kinds of people come up to them and want their money,” says Moore. “It’s unfortunate that so many people are after you.”

Winners should come up with a dollar amount for friends, family and charities and stick to it, Moore adds.

O’Neal, whose clients include a $90 million lottery winner, says with compassion: You have to take care of yourself first.

All three advisors say it’s a good idea to set up some kind of foundation to make donations to charities. This allows you to develop a plan for philanthropy and it gives you a place to guide charities looking for donations.

Can you keep your winnings secret?

Tennessee law requires the identity of winners to be published. But there are ways to get around that.

Lawyers suggest you set up a blind trust or corporation before claiming your prize. This allows a third party – on your behalf – to claim the prize and comply with state disclosure laws. But if XYZ Corp. Claimed $600 million, no one needs to know it’s you.

“That way, not all of these relatives come out of the lumber mill,” says real estate/trust attorney B. Jo Atwood of Atwood & Moore in Murfreesboro.

Finally, do you take the lump sum, which comes with a 10 percent penalty, or do you take payouts over 20-26 years?

The opinions of the consultants differ.

If you’ve not been good with money in the past, Lane says, don’t take the flat rate. This way you are guaranteed money every year and it goes to your heirs if you die before receiving the full amount.

But most consultants say you should take the lump sum for several reasons.

First, taxes are currently relatively low and are bound to increase. And you’re taxed in the year the lottery payment is made, so you’d likely pay higher taxes on future payouts.

The second is that if both the winner and spouse die, the estate would have to pay estate taxes on monies that have not yet been paid, O’Neal says.

How likely are you to need this advice? Unlikely. The chance of winning a huge lottery payout is about one in 100 million.

There has only been one Powerball winner ($25.5 million) in Tennessee, not since 2005.

But when it happens, at least you know what to do – after you’ve been revived.

All lottery winnings must be claimed in the state where the ticket was sold. This also applies to multi-state games like Powerball and Mega Millions.

The first thing you should do is sign the back of your ticket in ink and then make a copy for your records. You can send your claim to our headquarters unless it is one of the top jackpot prizes. (Jackpot prizes must be claimed in person at PA Lottery Headquarters).

There is no doubt that winning the lottery is exciting and can help the winner significantly financially; However, the winner must not be too quick to spend their entire winnings. Like other income in the United States, the IRS taxes lottery winnings.

Lottery winnings are considered ordinary taxable income for both federal and state tax purposes. Winnings are taxed in the same way as wages or salaries, and the total amount received by the winner must be declared on their tax return each year. However, before the winner receives any of the money, the IRS automatically takes 24% of the winnings. The remainder of the prize is expected to be paid by the winner upon submission of the return.

All lottery winnings must be claimed in the state where the ticket was sold. This also applies to multi-state games like Powerball and Mega Millions.

The first thing you should do is sign the back of your ticket in ink and then make a copy for your records. You can send your claim to our headquarters unless it is one of the top jackpot prizes. (Jackpot prizes must be claimed in person at PA Lottery Headquarters).

Winning claims over $600 must be accompanied by a completed claim form, which is available from a lottery retailer.

It usually takes around 4 to 6 weeks for your application to be processed once it is received at our headquarters.
