It costs 55 cents to mail a standard-size domestic 1-ounce envelope through the United States Postal Service, making it an affordable way to correspond with people in a tactile, memorable way.

A booklet of 20 stamps costs about $11. The beauty of “forever” stamps is that you can still use them even if the price of posting a letter goes up. That means if you can find a roll from 2016, when the price was 47 cents, you can still tape it to an envelope and drop it in a mailbox today.

This goes without saying, but depending on the time of day, the customer service line can be long. If you only require stamps, use one of the electronic self-service kiosks (where available) instead; There are usually no lines to use them. The downside is that you can’t buy specialty brands.

The Tyrannosaurus Rex option is shiny and fun. The site lets you filter by color, shape, theme, denomination, and more.

Stamps are commonly sold everywhere from grocery stores to pharmacies to office supply stores. Rather than simply risking whether your local Publix or Kroger has them, you can use the USPS’s location tool to find out. Enter your zip code and select “national retailer” from the location drop-down menu. Depending on where you live, you’ll get results like Walgreens, Winn-Dixie, and Staples. Keep in mind that these outlets often only sell booklets, so you cannot purchase stamps individually. And most stores only carry them in their physical locations

Costco also sells stamps in batches of 100, making it a good option for businesses and prolific letter writers. They are not available online and may not be in every store. However, you can buy stamps online at Sam’s Club.

Some banks and credit unions sell stamps through their ATMs or counters. This varies by location, but the next time you make a transaction, check if they also offer stamps. US Bank and Fifth Third Bank allow you to filter for locations that sell stamps when you search for an ATM or branch on their websites. A Wells Fargo representative said the bank no longer sells stamps.

Other options

You can also request stamps from your postman who will provide you with an order form. You can order by calling 1-800-STAMP-24 (800-782-6724). If your business needs to purchase stamps in bulk, you can call this number or email [email protected]. Collectors can also browse the USA Philatelic catalog and use the order form.

Online services like Stamps.com allow you to print the postage at home, but there is a monthly fee. If you have an urgent need to send something right now, you might be able to sign up for a free trial.

Note: Minted, Zazzle, and other gift sites used to sell personalized stamps, but the USPS ended the program in June 2020. You can continue to send mail with leftover postage that you may have previously purchased.

Before we dive into the differences between the top carriers, a little background on myself: I came up with the idea for the shipping school after working at various e-commerce startups at the time, where to be honest I made a lot of mistakes.

To be honest, it can be difficult to stay current in the ecommerce fulfillment game, especially in something as constantly evolving as the shipping and logistics industry. Sometimes navigating it feels a bit like trying to solve a Rubik’s Cube, which is made up of constantly changing colors.

So I thought I’d pour my experience into a free, easy-to-digest resource where new shippers can get the information they need, when they need it.

Speaking of new shippers, whenever an e-commerce business takes off, entrepreneurs always get into what I call the “ship search” phase. When it comes time to fulfill orders, they are faced with two critical questions:

How much does it cost to ship these packages? Which carrier offers us the best prices?

In the United States, there are three major shipping carriers to choose from: USPS, UPS, and FedEx. All three offer great services for both individuals and small businesses. Depending on what you and your business need, one may be the best choice compared to the other.

Let’s get into that.

USPS vs. UPS vs. FedEx: an overview

Although they may seem similar at first glance, all three major US mail order companies specialize in different areas of the industry. As a crash course, I’ve written a brief overview of each carrier below.

USPS Shipping

USPS is the airline built for the people. Literally. When it was founded in 1775, USPS was built on the promise of universal service for all Americans at affordable prices.

USPS is the only carrier legally authorized to touch every mailbox in the country, and it has developed an unparalleled network to deliver mail to every household in America. It uses the same network to also offer different email types at the lowest prices.

In general, USPS specializes in handling small, light packages under 20 pounds — think packages containing items like clothing, books, and cosmetics.

One of the best things about USPS is that it also offers specially discounted services like Priority Mail Cubic, where shipping rates are based on a package’s external dimensions rather than its total weight.

Individuals and businesses can access these special “cubic” rates when using online shipping software to buy discounted shipping rates online – more on that later.

UPS shipping

UPS is the preferred carrier for large, heavier packages. Think of products like televisions, pre-assembled furniture and more. While USPS only allows a maximum weight of 70 pounds per package, UPS has a maximum weight threshold of 150 pounds.

UPS also offers a plethora of express services at affordable rates for e-commerce packages, although they tend to cost slightly more than USPS.

They also offer an emergency delivery service called UPS Express Critical, which is the world’s leading sub-24-hour emergency delivery service.

Another area that UPS specializes in is shipping and delivering high value items. With UPS, shippers can insure packages up to a maximum value of $50,000. This makes UPS the carrier of choice for shipping luxury consumer goods such as high-end watches, collectibles, and rarities. We’re looking at you, Pokémon card collectors.

FedEx shipping

If USPS is the “purified spring water” and UPS is the “Coca Cola” of the shipping industry, then FedEx is the “LaCroix”.

FedEx specializes in express and overnight shipping when you need to ship something quickly but it’s not an emergency. Their standard overnight delivery services are usually marginally cheaper than UPS. FedEx is also the leading carrier for B2B e-commerce.

In addition to specializing in these areas, FedEx is also the first choice for shipping specialty items such as perishable foods or temperature-controlled goods.

In fact, FedEx offers special boxes, such as B. the proprietary refrigerated packaging that can keep shipments between 35°F and 46°F for 48 or 96 hours without having to use dry ice or gel packs. This makes FedEx the leading transportation company for e-commerce grocery startups in the prepackaged meal space.

What USPS costs include:

Scheduled Pickups: USPS offers free package pickup services that you can schedule on their website. Pick-ups are based on availability, but you can request a specific time slot for a fee.

Free Tracking: All USPS shipping services offer door-to-door tracking with real-time updates every time packages are scanned during their journey to their final destination.

Free Insurance: Priority Mail and Priority Mail Express packages include $50 insurance when you purchase postage from the Post Office or the USPS website. If you use shipping software to buy USPS postage at commercial rates, the free insurance increases to $100 per package. Note: Other USPS mail services such as First Class Package, Media Mail, and Retail Ground do not come with complimentary insurance.

Volume Discounts: USPS offers lower rates to shippers who use shipping software to access commercial pricing plans and/or who work with fulfillment providers like ShipBob, who receive discounts due to high volume shipments (since they ship packages for thousands of ecommerce brands ). ).

Free Tracking: All UPS services offer free door-to-door tracking.

Commercial Discounts: While not publicly disclosed, FedEx discounts are available to high-volume shippers on a negotiated, case-by-case basis or shippers working with 3PLs to leverage economies of scale.

5 ways to reduce transportation costs

Optimizing your shipping strategy, including costs, can help you improve your bottom line. Here are five useful tips on how to reduce shipping costs, no matter which carrier you use.

1. Optimize your packaging size (the smaller the better)

Shipping is an industry where size matters; don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. No matter which carrier you choose, making sure your packaging is as small as possible is the most effective way to keep shipping costs low.

If you use packaging that is too large for your items, you may be charged the dimensional weight of your package instead of the actual weight. In short, Dimensional Weight (or “DIM” for short) refers to the space your package occupies on a carrier’s truck. Shipping companies charge you for the “weight” that makes them more money: the actual weight of your package, or its dimensional weight.

Spoiler alert: DIM weight is always a lot more expensive than you’d like, and like Vegas, the house always wins.

When it comes to the density of a package, none of the carriers will hesitate to charge you these additional fees. It means more money for them after all!

As a result, new shippers often find themselves in one of those “don’t hate the player, hate the game” situations. However, you can tip the game in your favor by optimizing your pack size to avoid dimensional weight fees in the first place.

In order to save the most money on shipping, it is all about using “economies of scale”. In other words, the more packages you ship, the more leverage you have to negotiate discounted rates with carriers.

However, entering these types of negotiations is not as easy as walking into your local post office or UPS store with a briefcase full of cash. You have to go through the right channels. Because of this, it makes more sense to partner with a third-party logistics company (aka “3PL”) like ShipBob.

3. Shipping from nearby shipping zones

When most ecommerce businesses start out, they often hold inventory and fill their own orders. However, this can pose a problem when you include distance in the shipping equation.

Aside from how much your package weighs and how big it is, the total distance it has to travel to reach its final destination matters.

Carriers use shipping zones to measure the distance a package travels — not in miles, but in zip code groupings — from the place of origin to the destination.

There are a total of eight shipping zones in the United States. The place from which an order is shipped is the place of origin and is located in zone 1. The address to which it is shipped is the destination zone.

If you’re in California and sending a package to New York, it’s going to cost you. Because of this, it’s not uncommon for growing online brands to outsource fulfillment to a 3PL like ShipBob so they can easily split inventory across multiple fulfillment locations.

4. Switch to polymailers

Poly mailers take up less space than crates on trucks and weigh less, making them cheaper than three-dimensional packages with each of the three carriers.

Obviously, this isn’t the best option for shipping fragile items, but if you can pack your products in poly mailers instead of boxes, it’s an easy trick to cut shipping costs right off the bat.

5. Select standard shipping

Opting for a slower shipping speed will automatically reduce costs. Standard Shipping is always cheaper than Expedited Shipping, and Ground Shipping is always cheaper than Standard Shipping (UPS Ground, FedEx Ground, USPS Retail Ground).

However, standard is obviously slower than accelerated, and ground service can sometimes take longer than expected. So you need to decide what shipping speed is right for you.

If what you’re sending doesn’t require time-sensitive delivery, there’s no reason to incur additional costs if it means your products might get to your customers just a day or two earlier.

USPS, UPS, and FedEx: What works best for different use cases

USPS, UPS, and FedEx all offer similar shipping options for ecommerce businesses, but there are some differences, especially when it comes to cost. Below is a breakdown of the best carriers based on different use cases.

Use Cases Best Carrier Reason Flat Rate Shipping USPS USPS offers the most affordable and diverse options for flat rate shipping services with products like the Priority Mail® Flat Rate Envelope, the Priority Mail Flat Rate Padded Envelope, and the Priority Mail Express® Legal Envelope, and all the different flat rate boxes (small, medium and large). Small Packages USPS USPS is the premier small package carrier, offering the best rates for hand-held shipments under 20 pounds. Postmen can drop off these packages on their regular mail routes, which allows USPS to keep rates on smaller packages low compared to other carriers. Larger Packages UPS Large packages don’t put as much strain on the UPS network as other carriers, so UPS charges the best rates for this type of shipment. In fact, UPS specializes in handling large packages. Heavier Packages UPS For the same reason as above, UPS is the leading carrier that offers the best rates for heavy packages and easily handles packages weighing up to 150 pounds. Express Delivery UPS UPS offers the widest choice at the most competitive rates for express delivery, with the two main services being UPS Next Day Air® and UPS 2nd Day Air®. The latter is the cheapest UPS Express service for shipments that do not require overnight delivery. FedEx Overnight Shipping If you need something that needs to be shipped overnight and that isn’t emergency delivery, FedEx is your best bet. They specialize in overnight shipping and even offer you different timeframes to choose from for next business day delivery of the package. Later in the day (with FedEx Priority Overnight or FedEx Standard Overnight) it costs less money, but regardless, it often costs less than UPS for similar periods. UPS 3-day delivery option Compared to FedEx, UPS offers the cheaper 3-day delivery option with UPS 3 Day Select. While USPS Priority Mail can be much cheaper in most cases, on-time delivery has declined, and reliability isn’t as high as UPS’s for 3-day delivery. International Shipping USPS This is tricky and there is a lot to consider. Ultimately, USPS prevails here, mainly because of one thing: low rates. Because they are private carriers with their own networks, UPS and FedEx charge an arm and a leg for international shipments. USPS, on the other hand, works with other countries’ own postal services to deliver mail overseas, which is why they’re able to keep the cost of international services so (relatively) affordable. Shipping Fragile Items UPS While USPS and FedEx leave it up to you to properly package your fragile items, UPS offers specialized packaging services for fragile items. Trained in packing techniques such as block-and-brace, double box and hanger, their staff will properly pack your fragile items so you don’t have to. Dangerous Goods Shipping USPS While you can ship dangerous goods with any carrier, USPS offers the most flexibility. UPS and FedEx prohibit shipping a large quantity of hazardous materials on their network unless you are an “Approved Shipper.” USPS, on the other hand, allows regular customers to ship items like lithium-ion batteries (as long as you use the right services and put the right markings on your package). For Business Deliveries FedEx FedEx offers the best rates for B2B shipments because business deliveries are one of their specialties. They also offer the most reliable and economical service for shipping documents like contracts in their FedEx envelopes. Shipping High Value Items UPS For shipping high value items, UPS is the best choice. UPS allows a much higher maximum declared value of US$50,000 (or local currency equivalent) per shipment for insurance. This gives you much more leeway for shipping expensive items and often at a better price than FedEx. For comparison, the maximum you can declare to the USPS with most insurance companies is $5,000.

Sample Use Cases with Answers (Updated April 2022)

Example 1:

You need to ship a small box, say 5″ x 5″ x 5″, weighing 2 pounds containing cosmetics to a customer who lives in another state within the next 5 business days.

Let’s expand the borders of the contiguous United States with this example. Seattle to Miami.

In this situation, FedEx rules, but it’s costly. It would cost almost $50 to deliver your package to a residential address on time.

USPS is much cheaper with less than $15 delivery fee, but your package would arrive a few days late.

Example 2:

You need to deliver 5 printed books of the same size to a customer living in another country within the next 10 business days.

Maybe they own a bookshop in Denmark. So from New York to a Danish bookstore it would cost at least $250 via FedEx.

In this situation, UPS and USPS actually prevail. With cheaper shipping, however, there is less guarantee of arrival dates.

Flexibility in carrier options is key

Almost every successful business grows to the point where it’s time to optimize their ecommerce shipping strategy. If you’re a growing brand, maybe it’s time to partner with a 3PL like ShipBob.

Here are answers to three of the most common questions about the differences between USPS, UPS, and FedEx.

If you need to post a letter, you need to buy a stamp. Many people wonder where to pick them up. Of course, CVS is great for general purposes. Many of their stores are also open 24 hours a day. So does CVS sell stamps?

Yes. CVS sells postage stamps. They don’t have the largest selection of stamps in the world (they only sell a booklet of 20) but if you need stamps in a pinch then they are more than helpful.

Let’s go into that in a little more detail. This is because while CVS sells stamps, it’s not necessarily the best place to pick them up. At least it’s not the best place to pick them up if you only have a single letter in the mail.

How does CVS sell stamps?

If you want to buy a single stamp, you’re out of luck. CVS only sells stamp booklets. In fact, they will only sell the basic premium stamps. If you’re looking for something different, you’ll have to go to a different store.

These booklets contain 20 stamps. At the time of writing, they cost $10. Although, of course, the price of first-class stamps continues to rise. This means that the price may differ slightly when you buy it.

Can you get limited edition stamps from CVS?

CVS will not sell anything other than simple postage stamps. At no point will they stock the limited edition stamps, so it’s not even worth trying them out. The stamps offered here are intended exclusively for those who want to send a letter. Well, the good news is that every single CVS store will stock stamps. Since they’re not a big seller for CVS (most people don’t even know they have them!), you’ll probably be able to easily buy them at the store.

However, the stamps will not be issued. If you want to buy stamps from CVS, you need to go to the stationery and office supplies department. You can ask one of the staff there. They will be able to point you in the right direction.

If you are mailing letters, you can also select a few envelopes at once. CVS is pretty cheap for them.

If you prefer, you can also ask at the checkout when you shop at CVS. Most cash registers should have some stamps in the drawer and the clerk will be able to give you these. This is great if you want to shop at the last minute!

How many stamps do you need from CVS?

Well, you have no choice but to buy the book of 20. You can’t just go in there and buy a single stamp.

If you want to know how many stamps to put on your letter, you need to go to the USPS website. They give you a pricing guide. Remember that you can add multiple stamps to the same letter. Generally the first class stamps are for 1 oz letters. If the letter weighs more, you need to put an additional stamp there. In fact, you may even need to put multiple stamps on the letter.

Is it worth buying stamps from CVS?

Well, the cost of postage at CVS is exactly the same as buying it directly from a post office. This means you will not incur any financial loss if you choose to purchase your stamps from CVS. Of course, the biggest downside is that if you need a stamp, it can get very expensive. There’s no point in buying 20 stamps if you only need one.

We would avoid using CVS to buy stamps unless you get through them too often. It may be better to go to the post office and buy a single stamp there.

We would also avoid CVS if you are looking for limited edition stamps. Like I said, they don’t sell them there. That means the store won’t be the least bit for stamp collectors. In fact, they’re not for those looking to add a jazzy punch to sold-out packages.

The only time you’re likely to want to buy stamps from CVS is when you’re there anyway. There are just so many better places to buy stamps. The detour via CVS makes no sense. trust us There aren’t that many people who need stamps so badly that CVS is their only option.

We anticipate that the vast majority of stamps that will end up being sold by CVS will be purchased by corporations. That’s because CVS is very reasonably priced for business needs, so it makes sense to buy some stamps at the same time, right?

Does CVS have mailboxes nearby?

This really depends on where your CVS is located.

CVS stores do not have a mailbox within the store. You won’t have anything remotely resembling a mailbox. However, since CVS stores tend to be in more convenient locations, chances are there’s one nearby. It can be right down the street, or it could even be outside of the store. It all depends on how USPS planned its mail routes. However, we’ve found that they tend to place them near stores like CVS. It’s just a lot more convenient.

Can you send email while in CVS?

no The shop is exclusively for the purchase of stamps. There is no way to deliver mail while you are in store. If you are looking for a business that sends mail, you need to go to your post office.

Can CVS weigh your letter?

As far as we know, no. You have no way of weighing your letter in store. While we’re sure they may have set up some scales for demonstration purposes, these will not be used to weigh your letters at all. You probably don’t want the staff to catch you!

Can you return stamps to CVS?

If you have the receipt and the stamp booklet is complete, you can return your stamps to CVS. They can give you a refund or an exchange.

However, you cannot return the stamps once you have used one of them in the booklet. This is because CVS does not sell incomplete booklets, although we’re sure you knew that by now!

If you don’t have the receipt with you, CVS probably won’t accept the return. This is due to the way postage stamps work. If you bought before a price increase, you can return it and make money. Obviously CVS doesn’t want that!

Are the stamps in CVS “forever” stamps?

A forever stamp is one of the best stamps you can buy. This is due to two things:

These stamps never expire. These stamps have no price.

The stamps will always be first class stamps. This means that if the price of the first class stamp increases after purchase, these stamps can still be used as a first class stamp several years later.

The stamps you can buy from CVS will always be stamps that last forever. This means you don’t have to use them right away. In fact, if a price hike is around the corner, we suggest you pick up a book or two of stamps from CVS. It can even save you a few bucks, which is great, especially if you run a business.

Can CVS stamps be used on packages?

The stamps that CVS sells are made for premium letters up to one ounce in weight. They will be valued (in 2022) at 55 cents each. This means that you can put several stamps on one package. However, it gets a bit uncomfortable with heavier packages. After all, you would have to stick dozens there! If you are sending anything other than a letter, we always recommend going to a post office.

You should also keep in mind that these stamps may not be suitable for international mail. While you can certainly affix these stamps to an international letter, you will need to add a few extra things to the envelope to ensure it is sent properly. As we discussed in our article What happens to undeliverable mail with no return address? Those charged with handling mail often go beyond what is expected of them to ensure that every piece of mail reaches its intended destination. And in the United States at least, it seems that this admirable devotion to the job includes sifting through letters with the correct postage taped instead of a stamp.

Yes, strange as it may sound, in the United States it is indeed quite possible to mail a letter simply by appending money equal to the postage required for a particular letter and still get it delivered. It’s also quite possible to have a mix of these where you might need two stamps on a particular letter but only had one, so apply a stamp and then some loose change to cover the rest. Unfortunately, this doesn’t seem to be the case in several other countries we’ve looked at, like the UK, or at least we couldn’t find any examples of people successfully doing this, or provide any rules that seem to allow it. In fact, in the UK, sticking coins on an envelope that matches the normal postage for the letter itself, even if it has been processed, could see whoever you are sending the letter to be charged extra as each letter is of a thickness of more than 5 mm is considered a “large letter”. as per Royal Mail rules and therefore requires the sender to pay a little more for the privilege of sending it.

Returning to Freedom Mail to cite the United States Postal Service Domestic Mail Manual Mailing Standards, Part 2.3.3 Mail Collection:

Generally, mailable items are collected from a mailbox when postage is fully prepaid or money equal to the postage required remains in the mailbox. Money in a mailbox is deposited at the risk of the customer. If there is insufficient postage or money to cover the postage, the mail will not be collected, or if the sender cannot be identified, the mail will be treated as postage collect. Unfranked mail found in boxes, laid up, attached, carried or hanging from boxes will be handled in accordance with applicable standards.

However, there are some possible caveats here. First of all, mail with the correct bill of exchange postage instead of a stamp usually has to be sorted by hand, which of course causes some delay in the letter. Also, while postal workers make an effort to locate and process these letters, it is also noted that sometimes, especially if you handed in the letter rather than posting it from your own mailbox, they are processed by the automated sorting machine, which is a tendency has to chew up letters with foreign objects stuck to the outside. So be careful with that too.

According to Fran Eagle, the post office’s former mailroom manager, the usual process of handling letters with coins and the like attached is to remove the money and replace it with a stamp before simply feeding it back into the sorting machine to continue on like any other other mail. However, this can potentially pose a problem because, with some caveats, it is a federal crime to knowingly open another person’s mail, which can easily be done accidentally when tape is removed from a flimsy paper envelope. As such, some postal workers may be wary of attempting to remove change in some cases, even if it is the correct amount. In these cases, they can either ship it back to you or to the Mail Recovery Center (colloquially known as the Dead Letter Office). As we discussed in our article on this topic, the Mail Recovery Center employees are incredibly dedicated to their work, so there is a good chance that the letter will still be delivered even in this case.

Moving on, it turns out that the United States Postal Service has a number of obscure rules regarding mail and postage that vary by geography. For example, if you live far from a big city and far from suburbs or the like, your mail will in all likelihood be handled by a rural postman. Because of the nature of their work, rural mail carriers receive a variety of perks that traditional mail carriers do not enjoy. This includes the ability to wear their own clothing of choice and drive their own vehicle if they wish. More relevant to the subject at hand, benefits aside, they are also capable of acting as a sort of mobile post office.

For example if you want to buy stamps just wait by your mailbox for the postman to arrive in the country or leave the relevant money in the mailbox with a note saying what it is for and they will generally be happy to sell you some. They can also process priority mail, priority mail, or do whatever is necessary to help you send a package (even with insurance), sell you a money order, and process certified or registered mail, all much like postal workers do would do it if you actually went to the post office.

As you may have guessed from all of the above, simply leave the required money for the postage for a mailpiece in your mailbox, perhaps in a separate envelope clipped to an envelope or Priority Mail item you are sending with instructions on how to send money, they should be happy to process it for you as if you went to the post office to have it done. And in that case, if you’re leaving extra money for a booklet, you should leave that too.

The idea here is that people living outside of more populated regions often have to travel a long way to get to the post office, so they simply authorize their rural hauliers to do many of these tasks right at your mailbox.

Finally, at this point you might be wondering how often people actually send mail with money instead of postage attached. In relation to the number of letters processed daily, this turns out to be not very frequent. According to the USPS, they process approximately 187 million first-class mail items each day, of which only a few dozen items a day contain money instead of stamps.

P011 describes the proper payment of postage by the shipper. It also covers mailable items in or on private mail containers, the collection of postage due and revenue deficits for general and non-profit standard mail.

1.0 Payment in advance and additional postage

1.1 Prepayment Terms

The sender is responsible for paying the postage properly. Postage for all shipments must be prepaid in full at the time of shipment, unless this is specifically provided by default for:

a. Business reply labels (see S922) and franked reply labels (see P030) treated as business reply labels.

b. Goods return service (see S923).

c. Certain postal items from members of the armed forces (see E030).

i.e. Certain matters of or for the blind or disabled (see E040).

e. Official mail (see E050 and E060).

f. Return of keys and means of identification to the owners (see E120 and E130).

1.2 Mail without postage

Items of any class, including those for which special services are specified, which reach either the post office or the address office unpaid, will be marked ‘Returned to the post office’ and returned to the sender without attempted delivery. If an email recipient attempts to return or forward the email without paying additional postage, if necessary, the email will be marked “Returned for Postage” and returned to the recipient. If no return address is provided, or the shipping and return address are the same, or the shipping and return address are different but for the same person or entity, the piece will be treated as undeliverable.

1.3 Unpaid Chargeable Response Mail

Franked reply items on which the sender has not printed a franking mark are treated as business reply items (BRM). This mail will be delivered against payment of postage and the applicable business reply unit fee for basic BRM.

1.4 Unpaid matter for private delivery

If prepaid mail destined for delivery by a private delivery company is found in USPS collection boxes (or other mail holding containers), USPS facilities, or USPS mail processing facilities, the company will be contacted to collect the item by the end of the next business day. If the company does not collect the item, it will be returned to the sender postage paid. If the sender cannot be identified or denies the matter, it will be treated as dead mail.

1.5 Short-Paid Mail – Basic Standards

Mail of any class, including special service mail (except Priority, Registered and Non-Machinable First Class mail), arriving at either the Post Office or the Address Office without sufficient postage will be marked to show the total (rounded to the extent of lack of postage and Fees. Individual such items (or quantities of less than 10 items) will be delivered to the addressee against payment of the charges stated on the post office. For bulk shipments of 10 or more, the sender will be notified so that the postage costs can be adjusted before shipment.

1.6 Short Paid Express Mail

An insufficiently prepaid express mail item will never be marked “Postage Due” and no attempt will ever be made to collect the defective postage from the recipient. For next-day, second-day, same-day military, or airport express shipments received at the shipping facility without sufficient adhesive or postage stamps, the shipper will be contacted to rectify the deficiency prior to shipment. If postage is paid from an Express Mail corporate account or a federal government “Postage and Fees Paid” notice and the mailer writes an incorrect postage and/or fee amount, the correct amount will be charged to the account. For a custom service item that is received by the shipping office at an incorrect weight and postage is paid for with adhesive or franking marks, the shipper will be contacted to correct the error prior to shipment. If postage is paid from an Express Mail corporate account or a federal government “Postage and Fees Paid” notice, the correct amount will be charged to the account.

1.7 Short-Paid Registered Mail

If an underpaid registered mail is found in ordinary mail where only first class postage has been paid, the item will be delivered to the addressee as ordinary first class mail. If the postage and charge amount affixed indicates that the item was intended for registered mail, the item will be deemed postage paid and will be forwarded to the addressee by registered mail. If an underpaid registered mail is found in the registered mail, the item will be delivered without postage being charged. The additional postage will be charged to the sender.

1.8 Short-Paid Non-Editable Mail

Underpaid, non-workable first class mail will be returned to sender for additional postage.

1.9 Undeliverable and Rejected, Underpaid or Unpaid Items

Shipments rejected by the recipient or otherwise undeliverable are:

a. To the sender with the reason for non-delivery “Extra postage returned” if First Class mail with a return address. The sender can apply the additional postage, cross out the reason for non-delivery, and reship the piece.

b. Returned to sender and delivered if sender pays all error postage and additional postage for forwarding or return, if not first class mail and a return address is provided.

c. Treated as dead mail if it has no return address.

1.10Original postage

Postage stamps or franking marks originally affixed to insufficiently franked items will be accepted postage paid at their face value if the item is sent again.

1.11Packages of documents

A postage package with documents is charged:

a. At the first-class rate if the shipment consists mainly of first-class material.

2.0 Dispatchable items IN OR on private postal containers

2.1 Penalty

Whoever knowingly and willfully places postal items (such as account statements, circulars, sales invoices or the like) which are not prepaid in a letter box established, authorized or accepted by the Postmaster General for the receipt or delivery of mail by any means, with intent to avoid paying the lawful postage thereon, any such offense shall be punishable by a fine not exceeding US$300 (18 USC 1725).

2.2 Liability for postage

Except for restricted use by newspapers under D041, any mailable item not bearing postage and found, hung, carried or hung in private mail containers described in D041 will be subject to payment of the same postage as if carried by mail .

2.3 Partial Distribution

If there is a distribution of items to some but not all addresses on a route, items are returned to the delivery unit for use in calculating the postage due. First Class Mail rates are applied to matters that would require First Class Mail postage when shipped. If the item weighs less than 16 ounces, for other matters, the applicable First Class Mail or Priority Mail rate based on the weight of the item or an applicable courier rate, whichever is lower, will apply. If the piece weighs 16 ounces or more, the parcel carrier rate will apply.

2.4 Full Distribution

In a distribution of identical items to all or substantially all addresses on a route, only a representative number of items are returned to the delivery unit. The postage is calculated as described under 2.3.

2.5Known Distributor

If there is reason to believe that a private delivery company or person in the Post’s delivery area is responsible for delivery, the local postmaster will notify that party of the quantity and postage due. If the company or individual agrees to pay the postage due within 5 days of notification, the payment will be accepted and the items will be delivered to the addressees. USPS vs UPS vs FedEx Services

For overnight delivery, the three services to consider are the Post Office (USPS), United Parcel Service (UPS), and Federal Express (FedEx).

At the USPS, the guaranteed overnight service is called Priority Mail Express, or sometimes abbreviated as Express. Regular Priority Mail is not guaranteed. Priority Mail Express delivers 7 days a week and guaranteed.

At UPS, the guaranteed overnight service is called UPS Next Day Air. There is a UPS Next Day Air Early if you want the package delivered before 9:30am (sometimes as early as 8am in many areas). If it doesn’t have to be there by 3pm or 4:30pm, you can opt for UPS Next Day Air Saver.

At FedEx, the guaranteed overnight service is called FedEx Overnight. There’s FedEx First Overnight for next morning delivery. There is FedEx Priority Overnight for delivery by 10:30am or in the afternoon in more remote areas. Finally, there is FedEx Standard Overnight for delivery by 3pm or 4:30pm for rural areas and by 8pm in residential areas.

For our purposes, we’ll assume that getting it there the next day is important, so let’s compare the cheapest of the three options for the next day.

If it’s a letter, the USPS is the cheapest option as they have a flat rate envelope that starts at $26.35. It will ship any distance and any weight (that fits) at the advertised price.

UPS Next Day Air for a half pound UPS letter starts at $35.29. If you need UPS Next Day Air Early, it costs $67.73! (2nd Day Air drops it to $25)

FedEx Standard overnight in a half pound FedEx envelope starts at $32.03 if it gets there by 3pm. If you need it, FedEx First Overnight, Delivery by 9:30am), it starts at $65.56!

DHL will send a half pound letter overnight from New York to London, England for $107.72 to $63.07 depending on what time of day you need it.

How much does a package cost for one night?

Overnight shipping rates are subject to change based on a number of factors, including the following:

1. Package Dimensions

All major carriers use a pricing model called Dimensional Weight (aka DIM Weight) to calculate shipping costs. The DIM weight takes into account the dimensions of a package to determine shipping costs.

Dimensional weight is calculated by multiplying the length, width, and height of a package and then dividing that number by a DIM divider. Carriers calculate shipping costs based on the higher of the actual weight of the package or its DIM weight. This results in the billable weight that determines your overnight shipping costs.

2. Package Weight

Heavier packages cost more than lighter shipments. As mentioned above, if the actual weight of a package is greater than the DIM weight, it will be used to calculate the shipping cost. The heavier and larger the package, the more expensive shipping will be.
