There are an estimated 7,000 sunbed shops in the UK, with Brits baking for as little as 50p a minute.

This week, Fabulous highlights the risks associated with tanning beds in its Dying For A Tan series.

Using a tanning bed before the age of 35 has been shown to increase the risk of melanoma – the deadliest form of skin cancer – by 87 percent.

But still, people flock to the machines to tan their skin — though tanning addicts might be less inclined to tan themselves if they knew what goes on behind the scenes at some stores.

We speak to three former tanning salon workers who told us the chilling truth about life in a tanning salon.

“People would pee and poop in the trash can”

Lisajane Davies is 48 and lives in Kent.

SHE SAYS: “I owned a tanning salon called The Sun Shack for three years in 1997 when they were at the height of fashion.

I loved being the color of a chestnut and went to bed twice a week to top up my tan for years, so it was just a matter of mixing business and pleasure.

But working in the store was a real eye opener. What the people were doing in those tanning booths!

When cleaning up, I often found all sorts of things in the trash cans: tampons, panties, urine and even feces. I had to buy mesh boxes to scare people away.

We used to sell this tingling cream to be applied to your body to deepen your tan, but you sometimes heard screams from the booths when customers applied it to the wrong places and felt the sting.

I left the customer deodorants in the booths after their session but they kept getting stolen so I had to stop.

Most sessions were 10 or 20 minutes (where I was paying £1 a minute) but one of my employees was a total tanorectic and I discovered that on a working Sunday she was closing up shop just to have a 60 minute session herself undisturbed.

On a Sunday I walked in, turned off the electricity and told her to go.

There was a small gap under the cabin doors where the beds were, so we often chatted with customers while they sunbathed; After a while it was like a small community where people stopped by to get a tan and a cup of coffee.

A client complained after a class that she wasn’t tanning on the front, so maybe the bed wasn’t working. I peeked under her cubicle and it turns out she didn’t like closing the lid, so she ended up with a one-sided tan.

While tanning myself frequently, I became more sensitive to my clients’ skin, making sure they gradually built up their sessions from three to a maximum of 14 minutes.

Even after I left the business, I continued to use tanning beds until I suddenly stopped tanning two years ago.

I went to my GP and he told me my skin had stopped producing melanin and I was no longer tanning.

It was like God was turning his own back on me after all these years of tanning.”

Dying for a tan There are an estimated 7,000 tanning salons in the UK, with some offering sessions from as little as 50p a minute. Children as young as EIGHT use tanning beds and play Russian roulette with their health with seemingly little understanding. According to Cancer Research UK, people who have used a tanning bed (of any age) have a 16-25 percent higher risk of melanoma skin cancer than people who have never used a tanning bed. Sunbeds throw such strong UV rays at the skin that increase the risk of developing malignant melanoma – the most serious form of skin cancer. Just 20 minutes at a time is comparable to four hours in the sun – with many stronger sunbeams than at noon. In many cases, the damage is invisible until it’s too late, as it can take up to 20 years to become visible. Around 16,000 new cases of melanoma skin cancer are diagnosed in the UK each year – that’s 44 every day. There are about 2,300 melanoma skin cancer deaths annually—that’s more than six a day. This is one of the reasons why the World Health Organization considers sunbeds to be just as dangerous as smoking. Because of this, Fabulous says it’s time to stop Dying For A Tan.

“I had to save a girl who was trapped”

Fiona Williams is 44 from Wishaw, Scotland

FIONA SAYS: “I worked in a tanning bed shop in 2005. It used to be a video store and they added tanning beds to appeal to the clientele.

I worked there part-time to make ends meet after the birth of my first child.

It was the perfect gig, I loved movies and I also had a tanning bed in my own house that I often spent an hour at a time so both parts of the store appealed to me.

We had keys to the beds for emergencies and I had to use mine once when a girl got her hair extensions tangled in the fan.

She tried to put on extensions to bleach them with the sun while she was under the tanning bed and flicked them on the fan. Luckily I flew in, got the rogue expansion and no damage was done to it or the bed.

I remember a client in his late fifties who we affectionately called “Chamois Leather Man” because he was so brown and wrinkled from the over-tanning that came almost every day.

We had a pin number system and it logged the customer with their pin number and how long they were on the bed to ensure no one was on a bed for more than the prescribed 12 minutes in 24 hours.

This guy used to come in first, always refused the cream we offered which was better for the skin, took his tanning bed and then came back later that evening (the shop closed late, 10pm) hoping to that there was a change in personnel and you would not know that he was already there that day.

But sometimes I worked long shifts and was there when he came back. He would ask to go ahead and argue with me about it. He stormed off and later that evening I got a call from another branch saying he was trying to climb onto one of their beds because the computers were linked!

Customers often fell asleep on the beds, which was a little awkward. We would wait for the time up, give them about 10 minutes, then we would have to knock or go in and wake them up.

The best possible tan was the goal of many of our customers. We’ve had regulars who only used our “middle” bed because it was the hottest and even waited up to an hour even though all the others were empty.

Some also came with baby oil and we had to tell them not to use it as it would make them burn – and they would be mad at us.

Most of the time, customers left the store clean, but a few times I found used underwear, fake nails, makeup, and one evening I even found Viagra packaging. The customer was obviously tanned for a big night!

I used the sunbeds myself either before or after my shift depending on what the manager allowed, but I never got very dark.

I only stopped wearing them after getting a particularly bad case of sunburn on my neck and chest on a hot day while walking into town. I ended up having to go to the hospital and was given creams for second degree burns. I tend to avoid the sun and tanning beds afterwards.”

“Men walked around half-naked”

“I worked in a tanning salon in Swindon from 2014 to 2016, it was only a zero hour contract but it included free use of the tanning beds so I took it.

Some customers often brought their young children into the shop and were quite pushy trying to get them onto the sunbeds even though they were underage.

Many of the young men went into the tanning beds, then came out half-naked and went to the toilet, which was not a pleasant sight.

Other times people fell asleep under the beds and didn’t come out when their session was over and I had to bang on the booth door quite loudly to ask if they were ok.

I remember an old lady who was in there way too long and felt pretty weak when she came out.

And of course there were the customers who were addicted to sunbeds and used them far too often every other day.

One lady was totally addicted and even wanted tanning beds when she was pregnant, despite being made aware of the dangers – obviously the tan was more important.

I also almost got robbed while I was working there.

Two guys walked in and one asked loads of questions about lotions and how the tanning beds worked while the other roamed the store.

I happened to have a male customer in one of the booths so they left but this customer was a police officer and he had overheard the conversation and told me it was a classic robbery situation – one keeps you talking another area the place . I was lucky.”

Follow these simple tips for a wonderful tanning experience:

The eyelids can only block 25% of harmful UV rays from entering the eyes, so closing your eyes while tanning is not a safe option. Wearing eyeglasses is!

Red, itchy, or watery eyes can be a sign of temporary sunburn. In such cases, do not tan again. It will only make the condition worse, resulting in decreased color vision, reduced night vision, and an increased chance of cataracts.

Again, keep your sensitive areas covered.

Reduce stress! Relaxation is a major benefit of tanning beds, so make the most of them.

Don’t ignore any burning or itchy sensations you feel on your body while tanning. If there are any, get off and check them out.

Set the tanning bed to the time and power that suits your body. Going lustful for a darker tone can put your skin at risk. So be wise and don’t expose your body to too much UVA and UVB rays, which can cause sunburns.

Ask the salon operator about the setting power and time of the sunbeds and do not increase them.

If the tanning bed has recently been re-tubed, reduce your tanning time by about 20%. New tubes put out more power in the first 20 hours of use.

Apply a lip balm that consists of a sunblock. Lips cannot produce melanin, putting them at risk of overexposure.

Move your arms and shoulders occasionally. Some people complain of white patches on their shoulder blades and lower back.
