While not a significant source of vitamins A or C, the Clamato drink can help you meet your daily needs.

Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin, which means you need to consume this vitamin regularly every day as your body cannot store it. This essential nutrient helps your body make collagen, neurotransmitters, and L-carnitine. It also acts as an antioxidant that protects your cells from free radical damage and may help prevent chronic diseases like heart disease and cancer. The DV for vitamin C is 60 milligrams, and an 8-ounce serving of clamato provides less than 3 milligrams.

Watch out for sodium

With about 800 milligrams of sodium per serving, Clamato is a high-sodium beverage. According to the American Heart Association (AHA), Americans already consume too much sodium, averaging about 3,400 milligrams per day. High sodium intake increases the risk of high blood pressure, heart attack and stroke.

For better health, the AHA recommends that you keep your daily sodium intake at 1,500 milligrams per day. A portion of the Clamato drink consumes more than half of the daily recommendation. Unlike V8 juice, Clamato is not available in a low-sodium version.

If you are looking for a healthy vegetable juice, V8 Vegetable Juice is a better choice than Clamato Juice. Unlike Clamato, V8 Vegetable Juice contains no added sugars and its ingredient list includes the reconstituted juice of tomatoes, carrots, celery, beets, parsley and other healthy vegetables.

The benefits of V8 juice also extend to its micronutrient content. A cup of original V8 meets 20 percent of the DV for vitamin A and 80 percent of the DV for vitamin C. However, V8 vegetable juice is a source of sodium, although not as bad as clamato at 640 milligrams per serving. But low-sodium V8 has only 140 milligrams of sodium per 8 ounces.

Beware of the MSG

MSG is a flavor enhancer added to a number of foods and is generally recognized as safe by the FDA. However, some people claim to experience negative effects when consuming foods that contain MSG.

Despite the many anecdotal claims about reactions to MSG, researchers have not been able to find a direct link between MSG and various symptoms.

However, if you think you have tolerance issues to MSG, you should stay away from Clamato juice to prevent a reaction. MSG is the fourth ingredient listed on the label, right after high fructose corn syrup.

The spicy beverage has been a staple on late-morning menus for years, but most people might be a little vague about its origins.

The drink goes by many names, but the original recipe seems to only come from a handful of places. One of these is Harry’s New York Bar in Paris, France, which claims credit for inventing the drink.

Around 1920, Harry’s bartender Ferdinand “Pete” Petiot began experimenting with new cocktails using vodka, thanks to an influx of Russian immigrants who left their country due to the revolution. At the same time, the American “tomato juice cocktail” hit French grocery shelves.

Wine was also seasoned differently. There was, for example, passum, a strong and sweet raisin wine, the earliest known recipe of which is of Carthaginian origin; Mulsum, a freshly made blend of wine and honey; and conditum, a mixture of wine, hod matured. A special recipe, Conditum Paradoxum, is a mixture of wine, honey, pepper, bay leaf, dates, mastic, and saffron that is boiled and saved for later use. Another recipe called for seawater, pitch and rosin to be added to the wine. A Greek traveler reported that the drink appeared to be an acquired taste. Sour wine (posca) mixed with water and herbs was a popular drink among the lower classes and a staple of Roman soldiers’ rations.

Beer (Cervisia) was well known but considered vulgar and associated with barbarians – guess what, they drank it. The Spanish cerveza comes from the Latin word cerevisia (for beer) and gives an indication of the long span of time that people have been enjoying this drink.

The Romans preferred strong wine to beer, and viewed the grainy brew as an inferior barbarian drink. The Roman Emperor Julian even wrote a poem praising the virtues of wine as nectar and noting that beer smelled of goat. That the Romans brewed beer, however, is evidenced by finds at the Roman outpost in Regensburg, Germany (established in AD 179 by Marcus Aurelius as Casta Regina), as well as in Trier and other locations.

When the Romans came to Britain, they found that beer was harder to come by than wine. There was beer on site and you quickly got a taste for it. Brewing in Britain was probably well established when the Romans in 54 BC arrived, and certainly continued among them.

In the 1980s, archaeologists found evidence that Roman soldiers in Britain subsisted on Celtic beer. A number of domestic and military accounts written on wooden tablets dating to between AD 90 and 130 have been excavated at the Roman fort of Vindolanda at Chesterholm in modern Northumbria. They show that the garrison at Vindolanda bought Ceruese, or beer, as the legions no doubt did in the rest of Roman Britain, almost certainly from local brewers.

A list of accounts from Vindolanda mentions Atrectus the Brewer (Atrectus ceruesar[ius), the first named brewer in British history, as well as the first known professional brewer in Britain. The accounts also show the purchase of bracis or brackets, i.e. emmer wheat (or malt), no doubt for brewing. The garrison may have bought the malt and hired a local brewer to make beer for the troops.

In Roman Britain, brewing must have been widespread, both domestic and retail: remains indicating the existence of Roman-era malting or brewing operations have been found from Somerset to Northumberland and from South Wales to Colchester. In the third and fourth centuries AD, Roman hypocaust technology for supplying central heating to houses in Britain was adapted to build permanent corn dryers/malting houses and the remains of these double storey buildings with underground vents can be found in Roman cities as well on Roman farms.

It is widely believed that British brewing was part of a broader Celtic tradition. As this was well before the introduction of hops, other flavorings such as honey, meadowsweet and mugwort may have been used.

This Caesar salad dressing requires only a few pantry ingredients. Stir them together while you bake croutons and you’re ready to enjoy premium, restaurant-quality Caesar salads at home.

Compared to other Caesar dressing recipes, this dressing is remarkably easy to make. We’ll start with a mayonnaise base that’s easier than emulsifying oil and egg, not to mention foolproof.

This Caesar dressing is anchovy-free, making it suitable for vegetarians like me and anyone with a shellfish allergy. (Technically, anchovies are fish, but they’ll likely cause shellfish allergy reactions.) It’ll also appeal to anyone sensitive to the taste of anchovies. This dressing offers bold, classic Caesar flavor without the anchovies!

Ingredients for the Caesar salad dressing

To make this Caesar dressing, we simply stir together the following:

mayonnaise

Some Caesar dressing recipes call for oil and egg yolks, which turn into mayonnaise during the recipe-making process. We’ll go the easy route, starting with store-bought mayonnaise. You can find a range of mayonnaise options in well-stocked grocery stores these days — I prefer organic options with olive or avocado oil.

garlic

Just one clove of garlic is enough. Use a garlic press or mince finely by hand.

lemon juice

Lemon juice is one of several flavorful ingredients in this dressing, so we only need a few teaspoons (one lemon is more than enough).

Dijon mustard

Dijon mustard adds a key flavor to Caesar dressing. You probably won’t see it in the final product, but it makes a big difference.

Worcester sauce

Just a small amount of Worcestershire sauce completes the flavor of this Caesar dressing! Worcestershire sauce packs loads of rich umami flavor that makes this dressing complex and irresistible. In the absence of anchovies, the Worcestershire sauce is absolutely crucial.

Anchovies/Dietary note: If you’re a vegetarian or have a shellfish allergy, choose your Worcestershire sauce carefully. Traditional Worcestershire sauce includes anchovies, but several brands make anchovy-free Worcestershires (Wizard’s, Annie’s, and Whole Foods 365 come to mind). Also, note that these sauces usually contain soy, in case that’s relevant to you.

parmesan cheese

Parmesan ups the ante with an added salty umami flavor and rich, cheesy texture. Finely grated parmesan goes best here. Vegetarians should try Whole Foods 365 or BelGioioso parmesan, which are truly vegetarian (most parmesan cheeses contain animal rennet).

Since some of the ingredients in this recipe are already salty, we won’t add a lot of extra salt. However, we’re going to supercharge this dressing with black pepper to taste! Finally, we dilute the dressing with a tablespoon of water so that it reaches a drizzling consistency.

They’re Canada’s version of a Bloody Mary, and anyone who’s tasted one agrees they’re better. And when you order one at a restaurant, just ask for a Caesar. We like this drink so much that we shortened its name.

But most Caesars, as good as they are, are made with clamato juice. And if you ever read the ingredient list, you’ll probably cringe. While we look the other way when we eat, making homemade clamato juice is super easy and only requires 2 ingredients.

What Makes This Bloody Caesar Recipe the Best

Bloody Caesar ingredients

Typically, a Bloody Caesar is made with Clamato juice (homemade or store-bought), Worcestershire sauce, Tabasco sauce, a squeeze of lime juice, and vodka. It is always served in a salt-rimmed glass.

But we often add a few extras to make our Caesars even more delicious:

Horseradish (freshly grated or from the jar)

Fresh dill

Lots of black pepper

Pickle juice (from a jar of pickles)

A Bloody Mary and a Bloody Caesar are practically the same thing, with one very important difference… Clamato juice. Clamato is tomato juice mixed with clam juice (and I know that sounds SUPER WEIRD) and it really is the best thing ever. Think about how adding stinky fish sauce to your curry makes it taste better. Whenever I’m in a restaurant, I always order a spicy dirty Caesar. That means it comes with extra hot sauce (spicy) and extra Worcestershire sauce (dirty). The great thing about a Bloody Caesar is that it’s super easy to customize to suit your tastes. Just add any extras to your glass and then pour the calamato over it.

How to make a Caesar drink

You have two options here. You can either prepare several single drinks or a whole pitcher.

Single drinks: Pour everything except the clamato into tall, rimmed glasses and pour the clamato over them. This is the best option if you like spicy/alcohol/etc. want to customize. Make a Large Pitcher: Stir everything together in a large pitcher, then pour into salt-rimmed glasses. This is the best option if you have a large group of friends.

The only thing you need to know about Caesar side dishes is that there is no right or wrong here. Everything goes.

Traditionally, Caesars were garnished with a stalk of celery, but that’s largely gone today. At restaurants, most Caesars are garnished with pickled beans or pickled asparagus, a pepperoni stick or bacon, olives, and usually a lime wedge. It’s like a mini meal with your drink.

In my travels I’ve been asked, “What are some classic Canadian dishes?” and after many years of repeating the usual suspects: poutine, Nanaimo bars, butter tarts, etc., I’ve gradually come to realize that maybe the Caesar really is the greatest culinary contribution my country has made to the world.

What, you’ve never heard of Caesar? It’s like a Bloody Mary – but so much more. It’s a hangover cure in a jar, the quintessential patio sipper, and my personal welcome gift to myself whenever I land on a Canadian airstrip again.

This drink was invented in the city of Calgary that I call home. I’ve spent years throwing this cocktail behind a bar and can proudly say that this Caesar recipe, strange as it may seem at first, makes me patriotic like nothing else in this world.

How to make a Caesar

Assemble: Measure the Caesar Mix ingredients into a bowl and mix thoroughly. In a glass filled to the brim with ice, pour an equal amount of vodka and Caesar mix. Top up with Clamato juice and garnish to your heart’s content, information on the garnishes below. That’s it! Now just sit back and enjoy!

Then fill your glass about 3/4 full with ice. You can use a little less or a little more, it’s up to you.

Add vodka, Worcestershire and hot sauce. No need to blast the cocktail shaker. Pour directly into the glass above your ice cream.

Top up with Clamato juice. Fill the glass with Clamato juice and sprinkle on a little black pepper (freshly cracked if you have it). Some people add salt, but I think there’s already a lot of sodium in there.

Garnish. I’ve seen all sorts of side dishes at Caesars, so anything goes, but traditionally there’s lime and celery. I also like to add some sort of pickled vegetables.
