While you can always heat water in the microwave or on the stovetop, an electric kettle gets the job done much faster, more efficiently, and more economically. But is it worth the kitchen counter just to boil water?

So can you cook food in a kettle? Technically yes, but not recommended. Unless otherwise designed, an electric kettle is specifically designed to boil water, which means it should not be able to reach or maintain the safe cooking temperature that most foods require without damaging the appliance or other safety – and raise hygiene concerns.

Let’s take a look at how an electric kettle works, what are some of the things that would prevent you from cooking with it, and some of the safer options you can do if you have no other choice.

How do kettles work?

A typical kettle does not rely on a temperature sensor to boil water, but instead detects water vapor or steam to indicate the water is already boiling. It only generates enough heat to boil water before automatically shutting off.
