Can you store Blackstone griddle in garage?
Verdict On Outdoor Griddles In The Garage
Using a griddle in your garage is a safe thing to do, so long as you make sure that there is plenty of space and it is well-ventilated. If you’re still unsure about that though, then purchasing an electric griddle from Blackstone is the safest bet!
How to Store Blackstone Griddle (2022)
Griddle in the garage? We’ve all been there, right? We’ve marinated the meat, prepped the sides and just as we’re about to fire up the griddle, the weather turns for the worse and the rain starts to fall.
Well, now it’s time to look for an alternative. Many of us naturally think of the garage.
It has the space, it’s covered, but is it safe?
Surprisingly, for the most part, the answer is yes. However, there are two important things to think about before using your griddle in your garage. So read on to find out how to do it safely.
Before we get into that, the garage is a decent option for inclement weather, but using your gas griddle indoors is not safe and Blackstone does not approve their gas griddles for indoor use. View her statement here.
Disclaimer: I’m an internet guy, you must consider all safety options and exercise caution when using any gas powered appliance, whether in your garage or outdoors. OK, that’s it!
Safe grilling in the garage?
Safe place for your outdoor grill plate
Yes, even your griddle needs a safe place these days. The first thing to think about is space, and it has to be a safe space.
Yes, you can put your griddle there, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you have the space to use it.
Before you even turn on your griddle, you should make sure it is in the center of the garage and is not surrounded by anyone or anything, especially near flammable items such as paint, gasoline, or other common flammable items found in the garage Most of our units can be found in garages.
There is no set distance objects must be from a griddle for it to be considered safe, but use common sense. If it looks potentially dangerous, then it is dangerous.
Using an outdoor griddle indoors is possible, but remember that they are designed for outdoor use.
That said, they shouldn’t be used in tight quarters, so don’t use them in your garage if there just isn’t enough room there.
Ventilation for vapors, fumes and latent gases
The last and most important thing to think about is ventilation. There is always a risk of carbon monoxide exposure when using a Blackstone griddle indoors.
Well, in small doses, carbon monoxide is relatively harmless, but without proper ventilation it can cause serious illness, so make sure the garage door along with any windows or doors are wide open when cooking indoors.
The more ventilation you have, the better it is for your health. Cooking something on a griddle creates latent gases that aren’t easy to breathe, especially indoors.
It is best to open the garage door to avoid endangering your health and that of your guests.
Better ventilation also reduces the risk of fire. You may be the world’s most competent griddle chef, but that doesn’t mean accidents can’t happen.
A well-ventilated area drastically reduces the risk of fire, so use extra caution on this point. For more detailed information from the CDC on the symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning, click here.
Safer alternatives to gas grill cooking in the garage
While you can absolutely safely use a gas Blackstone griddle in your garage by following the steps given above, you may still feel uncomfortable about it, and it’s perfectly understandable.
So what else can you do to ensure that using a griddle in your garage is safe?
Luckily, Blackstone thought of that too. Instead of using gas-powered griddles, Blackstone has launched the Blackstone E-Series Electric Griddle, which is approved for indoor use.
🚨 If you’ve never considered an electric griddle before, check out our buyer’s guide on the ONLY 3 electric griddles to consider before you spend your hard-earned cash.
The reason an electric griddle can be approved for indoor use is the fact that they do not burn fuel to heat up.
When burning fuel such as gas/propane there is always a risk of carbon monoxide, but with electric griddles this is not a problem.
This means that safety standards can be met for both indoor and outdoor use. So if you live in an area where the weather can change quite suddenly or where weather patterns are more unpredictable, then the Blackstone E-Series electric griddle is the perfect option for you.
When the sun shines, you can pack it up and take it outside like you would any Blackstone griddle.
But if it looks like it might rain, you can take it inside and rest assured that, unlike most outdoor griddles, it’s officially labeled safe for indoor use.
Verdict on outdoor griddles in the garage
When you’re in a pinch and the weather takes an unexpected turn, there’s really no reason to pack up your grill and send everyone home.
Using a griddle in your garage is a safe bet as long as you make sure there is enough space and good ventilation. If you are still unsure about this, then buying a Blackstone electric griddle is the safest choice!

EXTRA TIP
You may think we’ve lost our minds. Or that it’s impossible. But guess what? In winter you can cook on the griddle and it can be even more rewarding than in summer! Imagine walking out into the snow and warming up with the heat of the grill and delicious food. Well, these 7 tips will get you there – put on a jacket and start grilling. You will not regret it! Everyone knows that you need to wear warm clothes in winter. But you can’t carry too much when cooking. Imagine your scarf falling straight onto the griddle and searing into an oily mess? Or you couldn’t move your arms because your jacket is too bulky? We can’t have any of this, so dress up, but don’t overdo it. The goal is not to freeze, but still be able to cook like a pro. Did you know that your propane tank can use 50% more gas in the winter? That means it might leak during cooking! So, before you even start your snow adventure, make sure you have enough fuel in the propane tank. A spare tank is always handy if you can have one nearby. And if you’re using a small griddle, it’s a good idea to swap out the small tank for a large one. All you need is our hose to make the switch. To avoid slipping, now clear the area near the griddle with a shovel. Add some salt to melt it. You want a snow-free route from your griddle to your house so you don’t have an accident! And if you feel like the area is still slippery, it may sound crazy – but you can use kitty litter. The grains increase traction and ensure that nobody falls to the ground. Problems with the freezing cold wind in your city? Put your griddle against the wall of your “Home Sweet Home” and say goodbye to the harsh breeze! And when you can’t brace yourself against the wall, the surround table accessory blocks the wind and even gives you extra space for your tools and ingredients. You don’t have to worry about keeping the griddle on. It’s freezing cold and the griddle is heating the air. Think now is the time to cook a whole brisket? No! You have to be smart – cut your food into bite-sized pieces. The smaller the pieces, the faster it will cook. So dice your meat and veggies into sizzling little bites with our spatula and dicer. Once the food is cooked, toss it in the pottery to protect it from the harsh weather. And hey, if you don’t have pottery around the house, just use aluminum foil. Wrap meat and vegetables to seal in heat and juices. And if that’s not enough heat for you, add a towel to make sure the snow doesn’t bite your meal. Then all you have to do is turn off the griddle and head back inside to eat (or you can stay outside if you fancy an iced challenge)! Don’t know what to cook best in winter? Start with recipes that are quick to prepare. We’ve selected a few ingredients that will get your whole family heating up with the least amount of effort. During the cold season, try these on your griddle to prepare something warm and tasty in no time: then you can mix and match! How about bacon with your pasta dish? Or you could grill chicken for quesadillas. Or even some sizzling onions and peppers for fajitas. As long as it cooks quickly, you’re all set for some great outdoor winter cooking! Warm up and start grilling! Throw a few slices of cheese on top of your food, and then a handful of snow. Then use the baking cover to melt everything down to savory goodness! Don’t forget to clean and cover your griddle after cooking! And if you still don’t believe it’s possible to grill in the snow, watch our expert Todd Toven prepare delicious Alaskan burgers in a freezing 18°F! If he was crazy enough to do it, why “don’t you try”? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mU_NHar0csw

How do you store a flat top?
Remember to add oil as you go. Season the griddle top to create a protective coating to avoid rust again. Keep your griddle stored in a cool, dry place and use a cover to protect it from humidity in the air.

How can I clean a new griddle plate before use?
Fill a bucket with hot water. Mix it with soap. Using a towel, scrub the entire surface with soapy water to remove any residue from transportation and storage. Dry off the water with paper towels. Let it dry completely before use or storage – this avoids rust
A NOTICE! Only use soap on brand new grill plates and then rinse them thoroughly. If you’ve ever cooked anything on this flattop, ditch the soap! It’s unnecessary and can leave a residue on your griddle, affecting the flavor of your next meal.
How should I season a griddle?
You just cooked an amazing meal for a huge crowd. Everyone is happy with the great food and it couldn’t get any better. Or maybe you just had dinner with the family at the campsite and you are ready to close your eyes. But you can’t just prepare your meals and let the Blackstone go; You have to follow some procedures which – we promise – are not that difficult. If you don’t take care of your griddle, it can rust, chip, peel and even lose its non-stick surface. Blackstone griddle plates are built to last a lifetime, but there are a few things you need to do to protect the cooking surface from the elements. In this guide we’ll cover all the basics to ensure your griddle gets the care it deserves. Is it hard to take care of a griddle? Of course not! Any existing cooking machine (even a campfire) needs a little maintenance. So in the case of a griddle, it’s like a walk in the park. No need for soapy cleaning, brushing or drying. You just have to take care of the spices. This is what makes the non-stick surface so your food doesn’t stick to the griddle. Essentially, it’s all about oil for seasoning and storing it properly after use. You just got your Blackstone – the outdoor cooking beast. We know you want to just go ahead, turn on the propane and cook up a succulent steak with hash browns, pancakes, eggs, potatoes and more! BUT, you can’t tackle it directly. You need to prepare a little. And that means a soapy wash just to remove any dirt or residue from manufacturing and shipping. And after you clean it, you need to season your griddle. This creates a sticky surface so your food doesn’t stick to the metal. You can read how to do this in the next section.
A perfectly seasoned griddle is almost entirely black and nonstick. The first “seasoning layer” is the most important part to get a perfect cooktop. Come on, your griddle deserves it. We promise it won’t take that long – and it’s awesome to watch! So, first you need to get your oil. We recommend these:
Blackstone Griddle Seasoning & Cast Iron Conditioner (recommended)
rapeseed oil
linseed oil
vegetable oil
shortening
olive oil
Add 2-3 tablespoons of oil to your griddle and use a dishtowel or handful of paper towels to rub the oil onto every inch of the grilling surface to create a thin layer (including the sides and back). Turn the heat up on all burners. Keep the temperature high until the oil begins to smoke; The grill plate discolours. That means the oil is bonding to the metal – that’s good! This takes 10-15 minutes; Wait until the oil stops smoking, and then do 2-3 tablespoons of oil, rub the entire surface with a thin layer and let it smoke. Almost done folks! After quitting smoking, do it one last time. Add oil, rub the entire surface, let it smoke. Once the smoke stops, turn off the griddle and allow to cool.
Clean it after cooking (next step in this guide). Rub oil on the entire surface. Remove excess oil with a paper towel. Store it in a cool and dry place
How should I clean a griddle after use?
Allow the griddle to cool down after cooking. We don’t want burned hands! Scrape the surface with a metal spatula or scraper; Wipe it off with a paper towel. You can use a tea towel, but it can get greasy; If the food is stuck, pour some water onto the grill plate while it is still warm. The hot water makes it easier to loosen the harder residue; Gently rub a Blackstone scouring pad onto the surface. Rinse off the water with paper towels. Dry it gently with a cloth. Coat with a coat of oil between uses.
Is it possible to salvage a rusty griddle?
Now that you’ve got your oil, do this: If everything goes according to plan, you’ll see a black griddle. Blackened like a night at the campground with no stars. It’s natural, it’s sticky. It’s black stone. You only have to “season” your griddle like this the first time. Regular cooking maintains your surface. The more you cook on it, the better your surface will become. Here are a few tips to remember AFTER cooking. Do You Have Questions? Read our complete seasoning guide to get that skillet blackened and non-stick – stress-free! Cleaning is easy! All you need is a metal spatula, paper towels, hot water, a scouring pad, and cooking oil. Here are the steps:
Steel, air and water don’t really go together. Bringing them all together is the perfect recipe for rust. So if you live in a high humidity area or on the beach, you need to take extra care to protect your griddle from rusting. Do you know what rust is? It’s iron + water + oxygen. And Blackstone griddles are made of steel, so iron + carbon. That means it just takes too much water and air to turn that flat top from black and shiny to rusty and dull. Luckily, if your griddle is rusted, there is a solution. Even severe corrosion can be brought under control with our tips! So here are the cleaning tools you need.
A metal scraper
cooking oil
paper towels
grill stones
Heat resistant gloves
Turn on the griddle and keep the heat high. The rust will loosen and be easier to remove. Wear heat-resistant gloves to protect yourself Get your metal scraper from the Blackstone Accessory Toolkit and scrape off the corrosion. Keep the griddle dry and scrape like there’s no tomorrow! Allow the griddle to cool, then wipe off the residue. Apply 4-5 tablespoons of cooking oil to the entire surface, then scrub with a grill stone. It’s four times more effective than using a regular brush! Be patient and scrub the entire flat top area. Wipe the griddle clean with a cloth or paper towels. Add more cooking oil and wipe again. Continue scrubbing with oil until all rust residue is gone. Remember to add oil as you go. Season the griddle to create a protective layer to prevent rusting again. Store your griddle in a cool, dry place and use a cover to protect it from moisture.
How should I store my griddle?
A cool, dry place
Cover your griddle
Temperature tips
Increase the heat to medium temperature. Allow the flames to burn for 3-5 minutes to improve heat distribution. Turn the knob to reach the desired temperature. Pancakes, for example, cook on low heat. Remember that the griddle gets hot quickly. But it’s slowly cooling down. Even if you turn off the propane, the griddle will continue to cook. Let the griddle cool down a little before you start cleaning. You don’t want to burn yourself.
Pro tips to make your griddle last a lifetime
Don’t bother with soap or cleaning products
Do not use scouring pads
Always preheat the griddle before preparing a large meal
Keep it in a nice place – no mess
safety tips
Don’t let the kids play with the griddle when you’re cooking. Burned fingers or worse can ruin any family gathering. So if you have small children, always leave the griddle under the supervision of an adult.
Do not leave plastic bags, containers or other flammable materials near the griddle. This can pose a fire hazard.
Cook in an outdoor area with adequate ventilation. This is for safety in case of propane leaks that you may not notice.
If you can smell gas, stop cooking – cover the propane tank with a damp cloth. If you feel in danger, call 911.
Well, here’s how to remove the grate: You need to find a suitable spot for your griddle to cool between barbecues. It needs its place and it has to be suitable. Also think about how often you use your griddle. Are you a weekend outdoor cooker who sizzles some steaks for the whole family every Sunday? Or are you more of a guy who brings the griddle to the tailgate monthly when there’s a big game coming up? What matters is that if you grill a lot, keep it in one easy place. And if you only cook occasionally, you can safely store it in a less accessible place. But keep these pointers in mind: you need to store your griddle in a place that doesn’t get wet to prevent rusting. And it shouldn’t be hot either, because that’s dangerous for the propane tank. The griddle fits in a cupboard, but do not place anything above it. And if the garage is your choice, remember to check it out from time to time to remove dust. Covers are a shield that wards off all the scratches, damage, dust and rust that life throws at your Blackstone. Now it’s time to turn up the heat and start grilling. But before you get started on the seared meat, sautéed mushrooms and sizzling veggies, follow these steps: And why not check out our recipes too? Congratulations! You just got a griddle that’s tough, versatile, and built for delicious cooking. Treat it well and it can last for generations. Imagine that – your sweet grandson, or even HIS grandson, is snapping on a Blackstone! do you wanna make it Follow these tips to ensure your griddle is always performing at its best! While it’s a myth that regular soap will ruin your layer of spices, there’s really no reason to ever use them. So if your griddle has already been cooked, skip the soap and just use water while the griddle is warm. Never use cleaning agents such as washing-up liquid or oven cleaner. They ruin your spice layer and can even cause corrosion. Also, cleaning products leave an odd taste on your griddle that can ruin your next meal. Scouring pads really only need to be used to remove rust! They scratch the whole griddle. Use water and a Blackstone scouring pad instead. Preheat the griddle before cooking! Especially if you’re throwing a party at the tailgate or even for the whole neighborhood. Lasts 10 minutes and we guarantee it will improve the taste. When you pour oil onto a preheated griddle, it soaks in with the steel and preserves the seasoning. This results in a non-stick surface for tastier meals. Think of all that seared steak – yummy! You can store your griddle anywhere after cooking, but make sure it’s in a safe place. Do not stack anything on the griddle or leave sharp metal objects nearby – this could scratch it.
How do I keep mice off my Blackstone griddle?
If you cover the griddle with fabric material, you’ll most likely be providing a warm place for mice to shield them from the outdoor wind and cold. Some people recommend that if you have to cover the griddle, use an airtight cover, most suitably one made from wood and one which snugly fits the griddle.
How to Store Blackstone Griddle (2022)
Finding mouse droppings near your griddle is not a welcome site. Let’s talk about why mice like your griddle and how to eradicate them for good! From the natural remedies to the potent options, here’s everything you wanted to know (and more) about keeping mice off your griddle.
There are moments when you want to light up that Blackstone griddle, but then you get pissed when you see a mouse or other rodents, their droppings, their fur or anything.
The presence of rodents in your griddle is a significant safety hazard and also a health hazard. Rodents are hosts to many diseases, and they carry mites and other pests, all of which have a negative impact on your health and safety.
What attracts mice to a griddle?
There are many strategies to keep these rodents off your griddle, but not all are safe. For example, poison can be dangerous, especially if you have children or pets in the house. If your cat or even your dog also frequents the grilling area, poison could pose another hazard.
The first step to keeping mice away from the griddle is understanding what attracts them to it. This allows you to eliminate the attractive forces, thereby minimizing the chances of mice returning to the griddle.
Do Ultrasonic Pest Repellents… Please enable JavaScript Do Ultrasonic Pest Repellents Work in Mice (What You Should Know) – Pest Control Insider
Just like humans, mice have their basic needs (food and shelter); huh, they don’t need clothes. Any condition that supports these needs will definitely attract mice.
meal
What kind of food do you prepare in your griddle? Mice love food, but they have a higher affinity for some foods than others. Coincidentally, just like humans, mice love carbs.
Chocolates and butter offer the best favorite combination for mice. Cheese has also been shown to attract mice. If you cook these up in your griddle often, some mice will long to share the flavor.
A recent report from the state Department of Health said that using a small piece of bacon to catch mice would do the trick. Mice love bacon, if you leave chunks of it or rarely fail to clean the oil off the griddle after cooking, you could attract mice.
Cleaning your griddle alone might not keep mice away, but leaving things messy will definitely invite them. The bits of food and other debris could be what the mice need to fill their tiny stomachs and build a nest.
Protection
How do you cover your griddle after use? The type of material you are using could be the reason a rodent would want to visit and camp in your griddle.
Mice not only want food, they also want a place to make a home. If you cover the grill plate with cloth, you will most likely provide a warm place for the mice to protect them from the wind and cold outdoors.
Some people recommend that if you need to cover the griddle, use an airtight cover, preferably one made of wood and one that fits snugly over the griddle.
Also, if you leave things that can be good nesting material, such as feathers, around the griddle after cooking, mice could use them as building material for their nests. This could eventually tempt them to settle into your griddle.
Tips to keep mice away from your griddle
There are three basic tips for keeping mice off the griddle: removing the food source, creating a physical barrier, and using repellents.
Removing the food source (cleansing)
Food is the main attraction of mice, so removing it goes a long way in ensuring a rodent-free outdoor area. It’s not everyone’s best activity, but of course it’s the best remedy when you need to keep mice away.
Cleaning your outdoor grill plate after use essentially takes 1 hour at most. Cleaning must be thorough as rodents have a strong sense of smell; They will not hesitate to visit you even at the slightest smell of food.
Cleaning your griddle and ignoring the surroundings is next to impossible to clean. Any food near the griddle or in your yard still attracts mice. Be sure to clean the outside area.
This includes the bushes or plants in your garden. If you store your trash in the backyard, make sure it’s secure. Also, you need to feed your pet somewhere other than near the griddle.
Create a physical barrier
Mice will have a hard time accessing your grill if you create a barrier. Grill covers come in different shapes and are made of different materials. Avoid cheap fabric lining covers as they will attract a mouse due to their warmth.
Mice could also tear up parts of the fabric and build nests in your griddle. When people ask if they need a griddle cover this is one of the many reasons I recommend it, it’s not 100% rodent proof but it adds another layer of protection against mice in front of your griddle.
If your griddle doesn’t come with a cover, you can customize your own in wood or metal. In any case, the wood or metal should be strong enough to withstand any form of external pressure that could result in breakage. Make sure the cover has no gaps to let the mice in.
use of repellents
Basically, repellents are anything that deters mice and other rodents. They can be in the form of traps, scents, ultrasonic pest control, or poison.
fall
If mice continue to visit your griddle even after you’ve used every other method to keep them away, you should try traps. There are different types of traps, some catch and others catch and kill.
The popular mouse snap trap is caught and killed in a short time. The glue mousetrap catches mice, grabs them and lets them gnaw them until they die. It may take a few minutes, but in the end the mice will be dead.
Alternatively, once the mice are trapped, you can detach them from the trap and kill them. Be careful not to give it to your pet cat; The glue is not suitable for consumption.
The live mousetrap is often preferred as it catches the mouse and keeps it alive just in case you want to release it or feed it to your cat. Release it in time before it starves and dies in the trap.
Scents to combat rodents
Certain scents are said to keep mice at bay, either by suffocating them or by making the air unbearable. Recommended scents for repelling mice are:
• Carnations
• Mothballs
• Commercially available mouse repellents
• Peppermint
• Ammonia
• Camphor
• Cat fur
Ultrasonic Pest Control
It’s a new technology that repels mice with electromagnetic waves and ultrasonic sounds. According to the developers, the waves irritate mice and cause them to leave the covered area. You may not feel the irritation, but trust that mice will.
rodent poison
Fed up with mice and no traps or other methods keep them away from your griddle? Poison is a proven way to get rid of mice.
Only use poison if you are willing to hunt down and dispose of dead mice. Poisons should be handled with great care and are not suitable for use in homes with children and pets.
Other Methods Honorable Mentions:
Increase the frequency of using your griddle: This will help keep out mice that come to stay.
Move the griddle farther from the fence: There are things you can do to keep mice away, but if your neighbor doesn’t do something about it, you could be at risk of receiving these visitors. Don’t be surprised if they climb into your house over the fence. For this reason it is advisable to keep the griddle at a sufficient distance from the fence.
How to disinfect the griddle after mice are spotted
Cleaning the grill plate after a mouse infestation is no different from general cleaning after using the grill plate. There is only one extra step; a natural remedy that involves the use of vinegar.
For more information on the disinfecting properties of vinegar, visit Healthline here. To clarify, here are the step-by-step instructions:
The process begins with disassembling the parts according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Use a brush or scraper to remove all mouse droppings, hair, food debris, and other unwanted particles from the griddle. Using a hose, squirt water onto the griddle parts. Use soap or a degreaser to remove extra or oily particles from the griddle. Rinse thoroughly with clear water. Brush the grill plate again with a disinfectant or vinegar and rinse one last time. Dry parts with a cloth. Reassemble the grill plate.
Conclusion
Keeping your outdoor griddle away from rodents is rewarding for your health. It all starts with knowing what attracts mice and removing it. Additionally, by using some barriers and repellents, cleaning your griddle well has been shown to keep mice away.
Of these strategies, you may need to use one or two at a time. In other cases, you may want to use all strategies, depending on the level of mouse infestation or the mice’s resistance to a single strategy.
How long do Blackstone griddles last?
With the proper care and maintenance outlined below, your Blackstone Griddle should last about 20 years (and possibly longer).
How to Store Blackstone Griddle (2022)
Wondering how long a Blackstone Griddle will last? There are a few factors to consider when trying to determine how long your Blackstone Griddle will last. So let’s explore all about how to make your griddle last as long as possible.
It’s time to think about the longevity of your Blackstone griddle because the saying is true – all good things come to an end. But no worry.
That doesn’t mean that one day your griddle will explode or stop working. You’ll usually have some pretty good indications that it’s reaching the end of its lifespan.
I’m also talking about all of this happening many years into the future. Provided you take good care of your Blackstone griddle, you will usually be able to spend a good deal of time with it.
You really don’t have to worry about how long it might last if you treat it with the respect and care it deserves.

Nonetheless, I did my bit and looked it up. I’m going to share what I’ve found and how best to care for your Blackstone griddle to ensure it lasts as long as possible. You will be grateful to know that you can benefit from it for many years to come.
With proper care and maintenance outlined below, your Blackstone griddle should last approximately 20 years (and possibly longer).
weather
The weather is possibly one of the biggest problem areas in destroying your Blackstone griddle. Destroy is a harsh word.
But still, if you don’t take proper care of your griddle and expose it to inclement weather like heavy rain or snow, there’s a chance you’ll allow it to wear out over time and eventually give you up.
The easiest way to avoid weather-related problems is proper storage, which I’ll get to in a moment.
However, for some, storage is not always an option. If you don’t have enough space to store your Blackstone indoors, you may struggle to find a way to protect it from the elements.
That being said, you will still be able to use your Blackstone griddle for a long time before it finally “dies”, even if you expose it to most weather conditions throughout the year.
If you end up with some rust on your griddle, check out our guide to reviving your rusty griddle.
storage
Of course, resisting weather-related issues that could damage your griddle is finding a way to store it. The best solution is to bring it indoors where it is dry and safe.
You can extend the life of your Blackstone griddle tenfold if you can store it away and it never has to endure the worst weather conditions out there.
It’s even better if you have space to cook with your Blackstone inside as you can use it all year round without the hassle of rain or wind getting in the way.
There are other solutions for the people who don’t have space (and I sympathize with all of you).
While you will be forced to leave your griddle outside, you can still find some pretty sturdy covers that will be able to coat most of your Blackstone griddle and protect it from harsh conditions.
Also, try to find a spot in your yard that will be kept dry all year round. It’s going to be challenging, but there’s usually at least one corner that can handle a little less rain than elsewhere. It could be something as simple as stashing it near your home.
Sometimes your home acts as a windbreak, meaning the rain may not reach every corner and could save your griddle even without a proper indoor cover.

Care and Maintenance
If you don’t care for and clean your griddle after use, you should seriously think about your life decisions! Okay, maybe that’s a bit of a stretch, but you really should clean your griddle to keep it in tip-top shape.
The cleaner your griddle is, the longer it will last for you.
It’s the same thing that could be said for anything. If you take care of him and clean him when he needs it, you will benefit from it for many years.
In addition, a clean griddle gives you much tastier food without worrying about dirt and grime from previous cooking sessions.
That alone should be enough for a professional to consider cleaning your griddle. If you want my advice, clean your griddle after every use.
Then, every few weeks (depending on how often you use it), do a deeper clean that really gets to the bottom of the grime. If you can do this, you will see your Blackstone griddle last years longer than expected.
Read more about daily cleaning after cooking, this is the BEST way to extend the life of your griddle.
General problems
There are a few things that weather, storage or care cannot cover as I mentioned above. A few common issues that can arise with a Blackstone griddle that I would like to mention.
Again, most of these can be avoided if you just try hard enough, but it’s good to have them written down so you know what to expect.
First of all, exposure to the heat of cooking or sultry weather could cause your griddle to warp. This can severely affect the longevity of his life.
You should follow the above tips on proper storage to avoid this. Rust is another big killer of Blackstone griddles, but it doesn’t just appear out of nowhere.
Most well-stored griddles will never experience the problems associated with rust.
Your propane regulator may be clogged and need to be reset. I have found many videos and educational articles online to help you through this process if this applies to you.
Pay attention to the noise your griddle makes when you turn it on and the quality of the flames as these are signs that your propane regulator needs to be reset.
Likewise, dirty gas hoses need regular cleaning, so stay tuned while you still have the chance. Did you read? We have a great grill flame troubleshooting guide that you should check out.
summary
Of course, most of what I mentioned above can easily be avoided if you just take proper care of your Blackstone griddle. They can last for years if you treat them properly.
You’ll be grateful that you do the little things (if a bit annoying) that keep it healthy to save yourself from having to regularly replace it later.
And if you just bought that griddle, here are the 5 things you need to do BEFORE cooking your first meal.
Do you need a lid for Blackstone?
In short, the answer is, yes, some Blackstone griddles do come with a lid, however, some models do not. Based on the model you’ve purchased, you may have a griddle hood included, but if not, that doesn’t mean you can’t find a custom one to fit it, or cover it well enough without a lid.
How to Store Blackstone Griddle (2022)
When you buy a griddle, you might be wondering if a griddle comes with a lid? In short, the answer is yes, some Blackstone griddles come with a lid, but some models don’t.
A grill hood may be included depending on the model you purchased, but if it doesn’t, that doesn’t mean you can’t find a hood that fits, or that you can’t cover it well enough without a lid.
Why does a griddle need a hood?
Lids on griddles are actually called griddle hoods, so from this point in the article we’ll refer to them as hoods.
But before we get into Blackstone griddles and the hoods that they may or may not have, let’s first look at why we might need a hood on a griddle.
Protects against weather
The most obvious reason is to protect the griddle from the elements, and that includes all types of weather. If it’s windy outside the day you plan to grill, the grill hood (or lid) can come in handy as a weather shield.
Blackstone E-Series Electric Griddle… Please enable JavaScript Blackstone E-Series Electric Griddle 17inch Unboxing, Usage and Seasoning?
Even summer sun is not always guaranteed and the hood can protect against a light drizzle if a shower should break out in the middle of the garden grill.
But the hood is not only useful during the cooking process. Most people don’t have the convenience of a shed or outhouse to store their Blackstone griddle, and some of these are just too big to store anywhere indoors.
That’s where a hood comes in. It protects against all weathers all year round, including snow in winter or icy breezes in autumn. No matter what, a hood is a great thing to keep from weather damage from an easy storage perspective.
Read more about whether or not your griddle needs a hood here.
Protects against rust
Speaking of weather damage, rust is the nemesis of every griddle and will more often than not be the death of your beloved griddle.
Simply put, rust forms on griddles when the oxygen in the water (which can come from rain, but also from indirect sources of moisture) mixes with iron atoms in the metal. This produces iron oxide.
This iron oxide is commonly known as rust – the red-brown substance that not only ruins the appearance of a griddle but can also reduce its effectiveness.
A hood is a great solution as not only will it keep out rain if you are storing the griddle outside, but it will also seal tightly to prevent moisture build-up if you are storing it in a shed or other unheated outbuilding too.
Preventing rust is important with a Blackstone griddle, so make sure you use the grill hood if you have one. If rust gets on your grilling surface, don’t worry, follow these steps to bring it back to life!
Protects against rodents
It’s not nice to think about, but wherever you keep your griddle, a rodent will likely come into contact with it at some point. Don’t think that just because you kept it safe in a locked shed, a rodent can’t find its way there.
They are clever and will squeeze through the smallest of gaps to get to a food source. For them, an overlooked crumb, spilled grease or dripping sauce on a griddle is a luxury meal, and they won’t hesitate to climb over your beautiful new griddle to get a taste.
Luckily, a hood (or lid) prevents this problem. It might not stop the rodents from trying to get all the way there because their sense of smell is devilishly good, but at least you have the peace of mind knowing they haven’t been able to walk across the surface you’re cooking your food on.
It’s important they can’t either, as rodents could leave feces or urine on the cooking surface, and if you don’t notice before you prepare your next meal, well… you get the idea.
To protect yourself from rodents and possible diseases, always use your hood when storing your griddle, no matter where it is.
If you come across rodents near your griddle, don’t panic, it can be solved with a few simple steps. Check out our resource on how to deal with rodents near your griddle here.
Controls heat and temperatures while cooking
Aside from the idea that the hood is great protection against a lot of things, it’s really just a useful thing to have when cooking.
Grilling food on an open griddle without a lid (or hood) is fine, but it introduces temperature and heat fluctuations that can cause uneven cooking if you’re not extra vigilant.
Think of a grill hood like an oven door. Closing keeps the temperature at a constant level, resulting in more even and better cooking of the food.
If you leave an oven door open you might be able to cook something, but it takes longer and there’s no guarantee of a thoroughly cooked, edible meal at the end.
You could argue that some meats just cook better without the crest, and we’d totally agree.
Thinner meat is much easier to cook on an open griddle because temperatures are lower and there is less chance of burning.
But that’s sort of our point. With a hood you at least have the option of pulling it up or down.
Thicker cuts of meat can be cooked with the hood down to ensure an even finish, so a hood on a griddle is a great way to ensure you get everything cooked to perfection, no matter what it is.
Does the Blackstone griddle come with a lid (hood)?
Yes, there are several models of the Blackstone Griddle that come with hoods.
Specifically, my Blackstone 28″ came with a hood, my Blackstone E-Series comes standard with a hood, and some other models do too. Conversely, my Blackstone Adventure 17 didn’t come with a hood.
As we said before, it depends. Blackstone griddles are numerous and varied, and some have grill hoods and some don’t.
If you haven’t gotten your hands on a Blackstone griddle yet and are in the market for one then head over to the product section of the website for a closer look at what’s on offer here. You should be able to find something to your liking.
For a quick overview of some popular Blackstone products that feature a grill hood, read below. Note, however, that there are others besides those listed here.
If you’re looking for a slightly more portable option for your Blackstone griddle, then take a look at the 17-inch tabletop air fryer grill combo – an excellent choice for those who want to use a griddle on camping trips and other day trips.
You can find the product here. In fact, having a griddle with a hood is almost a necessity for more portable options as you likely won’t have a weatherproof area to store the griddle on trips like this.
Some other great hooded portable options include the Adventure Ready 17″ With Hood & Side Burner, which you can find here, or the 17 On The Go Cart Griddle With Hood here.
🚨 For more information on compact, portable griddles for camping, parking or driving, check out our Adventure Griddles Buyer’s Guide.
A more permanent one you might like for your backyard is the 28-inch Air Fryer Griddle Combo, which you can find here.
There are many other Blackstone hooded griddles that can be found on the site, most of which are not designed to be portable like the three above.
Deciding which one is best for you depends on what you intend to use the griddle for. Our best advice would be to check out all the products on the site by following the link at the top of this section so you can find out more for yourself.
Are there alternatives to a grill hood?
But what if you’ve already bought a Blackstone grill plate without a hood? Don’t worry, all is not lost yet. There are alternatives to griddle hoods that can be used for a variety of reasons.
First, let’s look at options that will help keep your griddle protected from the elements and rust.
One option is to find a reliable third party that offers hoods for Blackstone griddles that don’t already have one.
This can be an excellent option as you can have all the benefits of a griddle hood without having to pay outright for a new griddle plate.
We’re also learning to love our griddles, so being able to keep the griddle we’ve already used is a bonus. I
I tend to buy a griddle hood griddle guard as they are made in the USA and look great online. If I do I will update here and check it out!
Otherwise, you can also just bring along general weatherproof griddle covers that will prevent rain and other weather from damaging the griddle when not in use.
It’s a good idea to store a griddle without a hood (or lid) under a weatherproof cover, even if it’s in a shed or outbuilding, as this can also help keep rodents away from the cooking surface.
Although it should be noted that rodents can find their way under a cover if it is not properly secured, you should consider this before purchasing any product.
Grill hoods are not required
In terms of cooking, there are several things you can do to ensure your meat is thoroughly cooked without using a grill hood. One trick is to place aluminum foil over the meat as it cooks.
This creates a space where the temperature is more reliable and consistent, resulting in even cooking. Likewise, a booklet cover will do the same.
If you’re looking for the same benefits of a griddle hood without buying one, these are great ways to cut around corners to make your open-topped griddle work for you.
In short, there are many Blackstone hooded griddles out there, and if you’re looking for a hooded griddle, you’ll find something at Blackstone that suits your needs.
Griddle Accessories You Really Need
If you’re brand new to grilling, I recommend checking out these accessories as they’ll save you some headaches and some greasy laundry. This is another big one. While your griddle comes ready to use… it’s missing some really BASIC items that you’ll need.
Grill Spades and Spatulas: These are the backbone of grill chefs around the world. Due to the flat-top design of a griddle, you will need metal-tipped spatulas and spatulas. Something simple like this works great, see it here on Amazon.

How to Store Blackstone Griddle (2022)
Trying to find out if your Blackstone Griddle can be used indoors? Griddle plates walk the fine line between a stove and an outdoor grill. Can you cook indoors with your griddle? Well, let’s settle this once and for all. Let’s start with the source’s most obvious answer, Blackstoneproducts.com says, “No. This device is intended for outdoor use only.” While that’s short and sweet, it doesn’t really explain why.
Let’s explore this a little further with the Griddle King. Did I use my 17 inch griddle indoors? Yes, BUT, as always, there’s more to it than just a simple “no” that Blackstone gave us. Go with me…PSSST!!: Want to improve your BBQ game? Visit the Grill Masters Club
What is a griddle anyway?
A griddle is just a propane-powered cooking surface, similar to the same stovetop in your home. However, there are some combustion considerations and safety precautions that must be taken into account before lighting this bad boy just yet.
Because I’m going the route of the griddle game and not just spitting out information for my own amusement. Here’s a picture of us using the griddle in our RV while on vacation in Yellowstone because the RV’s factory stovetop SUCKS.
However, I’ve always been a bit of a risk taker (even if it’s stupid) so don’t be like me, let’s talk about safety and other considerations.
Considerations to consider
size of the frying pan
Blackstone E-Series Electric Griddle… Please enable JavaScript Blackstone E-Series Electric Griddle 17inch Unboxing, Usage and Seasoning?
Depending on the size of your griddle or flat top grill, you could get stuck bringing it indoors. Some of these griddles are large, like the size of your standard grill, moving around might not be the best idea. However, as I’m the griddle king, I also have the Blackstone Adventure 17″ griddle alongside the larger griddle and it’s PERFECT to take to a campsite by the way if you’re wondering. I’m a fan if you can’t tell.
Propane usage of griddle
Yes, propane is one of those parts of the grilling experience that cannot be overcome. If you plan to cook indoors, you need to think about the size of the propane tank that is coming into your home. Personally, I don’t want a large, outdoor-style propane tank coming into the house.
However, if you have the smaller camping-style green propane tanks, that will work too. However, remember all the “considerations” I referred to at the beginning? Let’s talk about propane burn rates, because that’s where it can get dangerous.
Propane combustion CAN produce carbon monoxide
Now let’s just get this out there, yes it is possible for propane to produce carbon monoxide. As? Well, without getting too scientific, it depends on the propane going through the proper combustion process.
From Propane101.com: Carbon monoxide is produced by the incomplete combustion of propane. Incomplete combustion is defined as within flammability limits, but higher or lower than the ideal ratio of 4 parts propane to 96 parts air. Incomplete propane combustion can occur in two ways:
Propane Lean Burn – The ratio of propane to air is less than 4 parts propane. 2.5 parts propane to 97.5 parts air would produce lean burn. Lean burn can be recognized by the flames appearing to detach from the burner and possibly going out.
– Propane to air ratio is less than 4 parts propane. 2.5 parts propane to 97.5 parts air would produce lean burn. Lean burn can be recognized by the flames appearing to detach from the burner and possibly going out. Propane Rich Burn – The ratio of propane to air is greater than 4 parts propane. 8.5 parts propane to 91.5 parts air would produce a rich burn. Spotting a rich burn is very easy as the flames are much larger than they should be and are mostly yellow in color. Continue reading.
So that’s worrying enough and for me, having learned that, it’s enough for me not to do it anymore. I have no idea how to tell if the propane is burning properly and not producing carbon monoxide. PSSST!!: Want to up your BBQ game? Visit the Grill Masters Club
Further warnings when cooking with a grill plate indoors
Open flame:
While it’s not the end of the world, it’s important to consider the fact that the heat source of a griddle is flame. Because of this, you should carefully consider what you cook next. Curtains, papers and blankets near the griddle could be a disaster waiting to happen.
But as all things use common sense I’m sure you don’t keep papers, curtains and blankets near your hearth either. Same thought process here folks. keep it simple
mess that griddles make
Cooking on a griddle is a bit messy, even if you’re careful. Hot oil and grease splashing sideways onto the tabletop or counter is not uncommon in this labor of love we share. That being said, this is another consideration to think about when considering using a griddle indoors.
Harmful gases and odors
A question that is often asked is whether it is safe? Now, I’m not an expert on noxious gases, but I believe this can be safely dealt with, just like your open flame gas stove.
However, they still use gas lines and if the smell of propane is detected when the griddle is off, that is a good indicator that there could be a leak and getting the griddle and propane back outside is a must , while investigating the source of the gas Propane smell.
Know the symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning
As we explore the potential of propane to create carbon monoxide, I think it’s a good time to remind you to be aware of the symptoms of potential carbon monoxide poisoning.
From the CDC: The most common symptoms of CO poisoning include headache, dizziness, weakness, upset stomach, vomiting, chest pain, and confusion. CO symptoms are often described as “flu-like.” Breathing in a lot of CO can pass out or kill you. People who are sleeping or intoxicated can die from CO poisoning before they have symptoms.

Want to learn more about storing your griddle outdoors? Here are the tips you need to know to keep your griddle alive and healthy for years to come while you store it outdoors.

Can I Leave My Blackstone Griddle Outside? Solved! (2022)
A griddle is outdoor cookware, but can I leave my Blackstone griddle outside? It’s a dilemma faced by many outdoor cooking enthusiasts. I too found myself in the same dilemma until I decided to do my research on the subject.
They seasoned your grill and even cooked your food on it. Now it’s time to save it until the next time you cook. Will weather factors affect my grill and how should I protect it? Here’s what I found out from my research.
Can I leave my Blackstone griddle outside?
It is possible to leave your Blackstone barbecue outdoors. A Blackstone is an outdoor grill that you can leave outdoors. However, it would be best to take precautions to ensure it doesn’t rust. You need to cover it with a grill cover to protect it.
What is a griddle made of?
Blackstone has a variety of styles to choose from. What they all have in common, however, is that they have a flat top made of cold-rolled steel.
Why Cold Rolled Steel?
Cold rolled steel has numerous advantages. They include:
Even heat distribution
Even heat distribution is an essential feature of a grill. It ensures your food cooks evenly as there are no hot and cold spots.
Greater strength
Cold rolled steel is 20% stronger than hot rolled steel. This means your Blackstone griddle will last a long time, even in unfavorable weather conditions.
Improved surface finish
Cold-rolled steel has a smoother surface with few imperfections. The surface is also shiny, oily and free from rust and scale.
Higher Tolerance
Although slightly thinner than hot-rolled steel, cold-rolled steel does not sacrifice strength. This means your Blackstone griddle can withstand a lot of abuse.
All of the above factors are important to understand when discussing whether or not you should leave your grill outside.
That doesn’t mean you can leave your grill alone just because it’s made of solid materials.
No,
You need to protect your Blackstone griddle to increase its durability.
This is how you protect your grill plate from the weather
The weather outside can vary from rain to snow at times depending on where you live. The fallout can ruin your griddle if you don’t take precautions.
How do you protect your grill?
There are multiple possibilities;
Oil it before storing it
It is important to keep your grill oiled. Oiling protects the cooking surface from rust.
You can use canola or vegetable oil to keep the surface lubricated.
Do you live in an area with snow or ice?
It’s important to make sure none of this touches your griddle. Snow and ice can quickly rust and damage your grill.
Store in a garage or covered area
Do not leave your grill in an open area outdoors. It is advisable to leave your grill in a covered place as much as possible.
A garage or shaded area is a convenient and safe place to store your grill. It protects it from hailstorms, extreme mud or flooding.
Never let hailstorms hit your grill. It has the greatest potential to damage your grill.
In fact, it is advisable that you place your griddle in your living room if you have no other place to store it.
Keep it away from adverse weather “hot spots”.
Even if you leave your grill outside time and time again, be careful where you store it.
I’ve found that seasoned cold-rolled steel and rainwater don’t mix. Rainwater wears away the protective layer of spices.
Even worse, rainwater will rust your griddle. Removing rust is quite time consuming as it also involves re-seaming the griddle.
Avoid this by first identifying the areas that are weather hotspots. In these areas, the weather is likely to do a lot of damage to your griddle.
Keep your grill away from such spots.
Buy a good grill cover
You can invest in a good Blackstone grill cover. The Blackstone grill cover completely envelops and zips up your entire grill plate.
Why invest in a good case?
It protects your grill plate from the weather.
A good cover protects your grill from intense moisture, heavy rain, extreme heat and other drastic weather changes.
It keeps pests at bay.
Some insects like bees, wasps, bugs and others may want to make a home in your grill since you kept it outside. A grill cover protects it from such pests.
It helps prevent rust.
Because the cover protects your grill from the elements, it essentially keeps rust out. Remember that the elements are the main causes of rust on a grill.
It makes cleaning the grill easier.
A covered grill stays free of dirt, leaves, pet droppings and rust. This facilitates cleaning and immediate use.
Place it on a deck or concrete.
Avoid placing your grill on your lawn as this means you will be exposed to wet grass. Aside from wet grass, an open lawn can have other forms of debris.
The best place to set up your grill is on a patio or concrete. These dry places are suitable for the long life of your griddle.
A dry surface protects your grill from moisture. It also prevents contact with plants and grass, which can cause rust.
Again,
Although you can place your griddle outside, be careful about the position you place it in.
Continue to spice up your grill
Seasoning is a surefire way to protect your grill from harsh weather.
Spices create a protective barrier against harsh weather factors like moisture and water on your griddle. This also protects the metal surface from damage.
Make sure you season your griddle before use and after each use.

Does rain rust your new griddle? Can the Blackstone griddle be left outside? Yes! You can leave your Blackstone griddle outside, but some precautions must be taken to ensure you don’t rust or damage your new griddle.
Let’s talk about the grill shop!
When you first got your Blackstone griddle you did exactly what you should do, because you want that griddle to be a few years old.
You pack up your first big meal, clean the griddle and get ready to head inside for the night, but what about the weather?
You love your new Blackstone Griddle and it’s everything you hoped it would be. It grills – or rather, it grills – like a dream.

You did everything right from day one. You’ve cleaned the griddle, you’ve gone through the seasoning process, and you take care of that griddle like it’s one of your children.
By the way, not sure how to season your new griddle? Check out our guide to seasoning a griddle. So the question remains…..
Can you leave a griddle or flat grill outside?
Yes! You can leave your griddle outside, I mean where else would we store it?
I don’t know about you, but I don’t have a mansion with a griddle room.
In fact I live in Colorado and have a small yard, some, the kids, dogs and my skillet all play outside so it’s outside for the Blackstone.
Well I suppose you could keep it in the garage or a shed.
However, there are some concerns to be aware of and some preventive measures you can take to ensure your griddle doesn’t become a rust bucket.
What is a griddle made of?
Let’s look at the composition of the griddle before we answer. The grilling surface itself, as well as other parts of the grill, are made of steel, so the problem you would run into is rust.
We’ve gotten used to the idea that steel is stainless because so many things are made of stainless steel these days.
But the Blackstone griddle is made of regular steel, which means it’s a mix of iron and carbon.
Anyone who owns a cast iron skillet knows that nothing cooks quite like iron.
But heaven help the person who doesn’t wash it the way it’s supposed to be washed, right? Or letting it soak in the sink for hours.
Well, the same goes for the Blackstone griddle. It has a wonderful cooking surface, but like anything else, it can be damaged if not properly protected.
Take extra care of outdoor elements with the Blackstone griddle
Oiling it up well before you put it away is a good first step. The Blackstone company says the seasoning helps the cooktop not to rust.
The company recommends storing the entire device in a garage or similar location when not in use.
They also recommend a cover. Many owners of the Blackstone griddle find it cumbersome to move the griddle in and out when they want to use it.
Storage tips from real owners on the Griddle forums and Reddit
I’ve researched online and read what other owners have experienced, along with real-world action plans from users.
After all, I live in a state with different weather and humidity levels than you probably do.
My weather and humidity up here in Colorado is very different than the weather and humidity in Florida.
1. Oil it thoroughly with a quality oil that is full of fatty acids
Agreed, a good THIN coat of cooking oil will help protect the grilling surface from moisture and iron, which causes rust babies.
2. Keep the oil wet after applying it to the griddle
This one is a bit iffy… here’s the deal, yes you can leave it wet but please keep the layer thin, too much oil will create a sticky frying pan over time that will need to be stripped and reseasoned.
3. Keep it away from weather “hot spots”.
Place the Blackstone Griddle in a location where you don’t have to worry about high winds or flooding.
Since most of these were real owners living in places with relatively mild climates, this wasn’t a big problem.
It makes sense. If they lived in places where it snowed or rained eight months out of the year, they probably wouldn’t be as concerned about using their griddle in the winter.
4. Invest in a good grill cover
Buy a quality cover. Some people have been happy with the cover Blackstone made specifically for their griddles.
Most people were a little less than satisfied. They suggested a curved baking sheet under the Blackstone cover to form a tent shape.
This will help roll off the rain. Others have opted for a Weber chimney in addition to the Blackstone cover.
Something simple like this works great as it includes a small “teepee pole” inside to help rain bead off and prevent the cover from sticking to the grill surface.
Still others have chosen to leave the Blackstone cover behind. They went with a Weber cover.
Her reason was that while the Blackstone case is water resistant, the Weber case has proven to be actually waterproof, interesting enough that I thought to add it here, if you find it works for you drop me a line email, I’d love to hear it.
Sure, a good cover might cost you $50-$100, but eventually it can save you the $400 of a new griddle if you rust yours beyond repair.
I personally have the Blackstone cover and actually found it waterproof and does a great job, see below:
While Blackstone sells a fully wrap-around cover that completely encloses the entire griddle and then zips closed, no one noticed how well it worked.
One thing that was mentioned was that high humidity can cause rusting problems with the Blackstone griddle, almost like getting it wet from the rain.
The moisture seeps under the cover and oxidizes the metal. Leaving a two or three inch gap when closing the cover can help.

5. Keep your griddle on concrete or a deck (not grass)
Owners also say to place the griddle on some kind of stand – usually cement – that keeps it away from plants or water overflows.
Even a deck is great, the problem is that griddle sitting on your lawn, sitting in wet grass, dogs pee on it, etc.
judgment and resolution
Yes, you can absolutely leave your griddle outside. Leaving the griddle outside is the only option for most people. However, remember that you must follow the guide in this article to keep your griddle in good condition.
Read your owner’s manual, make sure you know the manufacturer’s recommendations, and follow a few precautions outlined here in this article.
Whether you’re grilling on a Blackstone, Camp Chef, Blue Rhino, Steelmade USA or a Royal Gourmet, it doesn’t matter what matters is taking care of what you have.
Remember, invest in a cover, store on cement or deck and leave stored with a THIN layer of oil.
Griddle Accessories You Really Need
This is another big one. While your griddle comes ready to use, it is missing some really BASIC items that you will need.
Speaking of which, are you looking for space for your griddle and thinking about using it indoors? Read this first. Can I use my griddle indoors?
Conclusion
There you have it! The age old question “can I leave my Blackstone griddle outside” has been killed!
Yes, leave it outside, but take care of it while doing so or you’ll end up owning a really expensive piece of rust. Griddle King, get out.
How to Store Blackstone Griddle (2022)
Blackstone griddles are built to last, withstanding cold winters and hot summers. However, how you store your grill will either extend or detract from its intended lifespan.
Blackstone grill plates are made from cold-rolled steel, which is more corrosion-resistant than most metals. Nonetheless, prolonged or repeated exposure to harsh elements such as water and moisture will result in rust.
So how do you properly store your grill plate in winter or between barbecues?
How to store Blackstone Griddle
Whether it’s the warm or cold grilling season, it’s best to store your grill in a cool, dry place after use. It is recommended to store it indoors, in a garage or shed. Also, make sure you cover it with a quality waterproof Blackstone grill cover to prevent rusting.
Preparing your griddle for storage
After using my grill, I simply scrub off the leftover food with a scrubbing brush, close the lid, and stow it away.
But I can’t do that with my Blackstone Griddle.
A Blackstone griddle should be pristine and well seasoned prior to storage. Otherwise, the dirt will eat away at the surface of the grill and lead to nucleation.
Follow these steps to quickly clean your griddle:
Let the grill cool down
Scrape off leftover food on the hob with a spatula or spatula
Wipe the surface with a paper towel
If food has stuck to the cooking surface, pour in some warm water and let it sit for a while.
Scrub gently with a grill sponge.
Rinse off the water, dry the surface thoroughly with clean paper towels or a lint-free dishcloth
Apply a thin layer of your favorite oil
Your griddle can now be safely stowed away!
Where should I store my griddle?
You need to find a reasonable and suitable place for your griddle to cool when not in use.
The best place to store your Blackstone griddle is in a cool, dry place, preferably under a roof such as a garage or garden shed.
This way your griddle is safe from rust catalysts such as rain and moisture. However, make sure that the storage does not get wet.
How often do you use your grill for grilling? This is a crucial consideration when deciding where to store your griddle.
Are you a weekend outdoor cook, a monthly guy, or a seasonal griller? If you use your grill frequently, keep it in an accessible place. And if you only cook occasionally, it needs more intensive care during storage.
But the most important pointers are A cool, dry place!
Don’t stack things on your Blackstone griddle
If you store your grill in the garage, it’s easy to stack things on top. Your grilling surface should not be used as a table or shelf when not in use.
Stacking items on the grill surface can:
Crack or damage the delicate surface of the grill plate, resulting in uneven heating
Damage some Griddle components
Cause aesthetic damage
Consider getting a stainless griddle caddy to store griddle accessories like spatulas and spices.
Cover your griddle
Not everyone has a garage or garden shed to safely store their griddle. Well, if you find yourself in such a condition, you should consider investing in a heavy-duty, waterproof grill cover.
The cover protects the grill surface from rust, dust, scratches and damage.
Blackstone offers a variety of high quality griddle top covers designed to fit specific models exactly. These covers are made from durable, water-resistant 600 denier material that protects the cold-rolled steel griddle from moisture and other harsh components.
The larger grill covers are equipped with buckles in the corners to secure them against the strong wind. They also feature a stylishly printed Blackstone logo.
Note: Make sure your griddle has completely cooled before covering to avoid melting the polyester material.
You can also find some good generic grill covers on the aftermarket without paying the extra markup for branding. However, make sure the cover fits your specific griddle dimensions snugly.
If your Blackstone has a built-in hood, it will provide some form of protection from the harsh environment. However, don’t get too comfortable with this feature and don’t take the necessary precautions.
In heavy rain, water can easily penetrate through the seams of the hood and end up on the delicate grill plate. If you don’t react immediately, the water will start to peel off parts of the spice layer. Then rust soon follows.
DIY Blackstone Grill Cover
Did you know you can make your grill cover in the comfort of your own home? You can either use an improvised tarp as a cover or build a shell-like cover out of metal and wood.
Using a tarp as a Blackstone grill cover
Size is the key factor to consider when using a tarp as a grill cover. It shouldn’t be too small or too big.
Measure the dimensions of your grill with the hood closed and the side tables folded in. Then look for a durable tarpaulin made from several laminated layers of high-quality polyester or vinyl.
Allow enough time for your grill to cool, then drape the tarp over the cooktop, making sure it is level. Attach the lightweight ratchet strap or bungee cords around the legs of your grill.
Construction of a rigid cover
The cover should be large enough to fit over the grill plate and hood and heavy enough not to be blown away by the wind.
You can use a simple stainless steel diamond plate attached to a wooden frame (2″ x 6″). It should cover the griddle by at least two inches.
Apply external waterproof caulk to the corners and cover the exposed timber frame with suitable paint. The cart base or stand of the griddle should be made of stainless steel with a protective finish to withstand the harsh elements.
What is the best way to store a Blackstone griddle over the winter?
Storing your griddle for long periods of time makes it vulnerable to the elements and rodents.
Mice, rats and other rodents are attracted to the smell of fresh or spoiled food. They smell like food leftovers on the grill. So make sure your grill is thoroughly clean before you put it away for the winter.
Scrape any residue off the cooking surface, pour in warm water and scrub with a soft scouring pad. Then dry it well and season it with a light coat of oil before putting it away.
Wrap it well in a good quality grill cover and store in the garage or shed.
Wipe down your griddle regularly. Even if your flat grill is covered or in a garage/shed, condensation can form on the surface causing rust.
Check your griddle frequently, especially if you are going to store it for a long time, and wipe it down with a paper towel.
Why do Blackstone griddle plates rust?
Did you know that rust = iron + water + oxygen?
Blackstone griddle plates are made of cold-rolled steel, which is composed of iron + carbon. This means that too much exposure to air and water will cause your grilling surface to dull and rust.
So if you live in a high humidity area, you need to take extra care to protect your grill from rusting.
