Is $40 a good amount for a gift card?
You want to give an amount in the gift card that seems appropriate. General etiquette is usually under $20 for casual acquaintances, like co-workers, $30-$75 for close friends and family members and more for someone like your spouse or for a big occasion, like a wedding.
Ask George: Can restaurant gift cards be used toward tax and tip?
Gift cards have become ubiquitous in our culture. In a 2013 survey, 100% of respondents said they had given at least one gift card in the past year. On the other hand, many people find them silly – that high society simply does not give away vouchers. But when so many people use them, how can they be wrong? Is there any gift card etiquette you can follow to avoid offending a gift recipient? I think so.
About once every holiday season I get a question about gift cards. Here’s one of my favorites:
Question: I got married this summer and three months later me and the wife have our first argument. As I have learned from your articles, the fight is indeed about money. But not in the way you think. We argue about whether giving gift certificates as Christmas gifts is “sticky”. I say no. In fact, I’ve been doing this for years. I even save the points on my credit cards and turn them into gift cards every November, so I literally give away most of my gifts without spending a penny. But my new wife says gift cards are impersonal (and giving cash is downright insulting). She also says gift cards come with high fees, not all of the money is used, and they’re easily stolen — “nobody steals your sweater,” she says. Who’s right, Howard? —Paul in Alabama
I also recently received one about giving gift cards as a wedding gift:
Question: I’ve been with my boyfriend for two years and I’ve never seen him give a gift that wasn’t a gift certificate. He buys them for everything – my birthday, Valentine’s Day, everything. We are going to his best friend’s wedding next month and he wants to get the couple a gift certificate! I told him that was a TERRIBLE idea and he should just buy something from their registry. He says he’s always given away gift cards, so what’s the big deal? Is he right? am i too intense – Celeste in New York
Personally, I think gift cards can make great gifts when given the right way – even for a wedding. Here are my tips for giving gift cards without being cheesy.
Gift Card Etiquette 101: Giving Gift Cards the Right Way
Make sure the gift card is the correct card
Especially at a wedding, giving an all-purpose gift card can seem like you didn’t give the gift a thought. Also, as one of our reporters discovered while researching gift card tips, many banks charge fees for obtaining a general-purpose gift card or something similar.
So you want to get a gift card from a particular retailer for two reasons:
You can make sure that the card fits the recipient. You can avoid additional fees
In the case of the wedding, this can also be especially useful if you are shopping late. When no more gifts on the registry fit your budget, give the happy couple a gift card to Sur La Table or their favorite retailer.
This also works for the holidays. Instead of getting everyone a universal Visa gift card, get the foodie in your life a restaurant gift card, the handyman in your life a home improvement card, and the shopper a card at their favorite store.
Strive for the accompanying message
Don’t just stick the gift certificate in an envelope, or worse, just give it to the recipient. This will really look like you didn’t try. Instead, get a greeting card appropriate to the occasion. Then take the time to write a message instead of just signing your name and putting the gift card in the envelope. Think of the person and the occasion and write something meaningful and appropriate. Make sure it’s personal so it resonates with the person reading it.
Make sure the dollar amount is reasonable but still within your budget
You want to put a reasonable amount on the gift certificate. General etiquette is usually under $20 for casual acquaintances like co-workers, $30 to $75 for close friends and family members, and more for someone like your spouse or for a big occasion like a wedding. Always make sure the dollar amount you give is visible on the card or write it down.
Of course, etiquette is fine, but always make sure you can afford it. As with any gift, check your budget to see what you can afford. If you can only afford $30 for a friend’s wedding, don’t give more just to appear polite. And you certainly don’t want to use a credit card to pay for a gift card. Interest charges can make your $30 gift card cost $60 or $90 if you make minimum payments.
You shouldn’t feel obligated to go into debt and create your own financial problems just to please someone else. And if saying that makes me gauche, then I will gauche. Your friends and family should be able to recognize and empathize with a difficult financial situation. And if they should cause you grief, they are hardly masters of etiquette themselves.

When should you not tip?
While 20% is the gold standard for a good tip, you can leave less if necessary, as long as you leave something, Badea said. He suggests tipping is just the cost of doing business when going to a restaurant, regardless of service.

Eating out can be one of the most enjoyable experiences as it removes the burden of cooking and immerses you in delightful surroundings. It’s a luxury many people have mourned during the worst days of the pandemic. Poor service can spoil a great dining experience, but before you withhold your tip, consider the various factors that go on behind the scenes.

For starters, the federal minimum wage is only $7.25 an hour, not a living wage in today’s economy. Worse, under federal law, some employers, depending on the state, can claim what’s called a “tip credit,” which allows them to pay restaurant workers or bartenders as little as $2.13 an hour, with their tips making up the difference $7 .25 per hour. That means many waiters and bartenders rely on her tips to make ends meet. Before you decide not to leave a tip, consider the following considerations.
Make your money work better for you
Workers rely on tips to survive
Because of the way the restaurant and beverage industry is structured, waiters rely on tipping, not as a bonus, just to make a living. “These workers are being paid well below minimum wage,” said Scott Hasting, CFA and co-founder of BetWorthy LLC. “Therefore, tipping is a social responsibility for customers. Tipping even if you have experienced poor service is just an act of goodwill in the hope that the service will be improved next time.”
Get it right: etiquette rules you need to know when ordering gifts online
Waiters often pay their tips to other employees
If you’re not happy with your server and are considering withholding a tip, remember an important point: your tip goes to more than one person. “Specifically for the restaurant industry, tips are often given to other employees,” said Brian Howard, owner of BarSight Restaurants Systems. “That means the kitchen, the bus drivers, the host, all get a portion of whatever tip you give. Even if the service is bad or the food isn’t right, not tipping hurts everyone.”
Make your money work better for you
He recommends speaking to a manager about your concerns and leaving a small tip instead of leaving none at all.
Since servers are often required to pay out a certain percentage of their revenue to their support staff at the end of each shift, they could incur a loss if you don’t tip them, said Brooke Frederick, blogger at Minimalist Mama and a former waitress, bartender, and hostess personal trainer
“While the restaurant, bar or hotel sets their own tipping percentage, this generally varies between 4% and 10% of sales. This means if you go to a restaurant and your meal is $100 and you choose not to tip, the person serving you will have to pay $10 out of their own pocket to fund your dining experience. ”
Servers could just be having a bad day
Waiters are only human and many of them have a bad day – working in restaurants and bars can be exhausting. During the pandemic, many workers have felt frustrated by increased demands and poor treatment from customers and management, while being told to put their health on the line.
Make your money work better for you
The difference between other jobs and the hospitality industry is that waiters are punished financially for their bad days, said Yarooms CEO Dragos Badea. “Think of all the times you didn’t do an excellent job yourself at work. Have you been deducted part of your salary for each mistake? It’s a high-pressure environment to be a waiter, so some compassion and understanding should be in order.”

Servers may not be responsible for the poor service
Your waiter is often the person who bears the brunt of difficulties in the kitchen and beyond, even when it’s not their fault; So don’t rush to punish your server for what you perceive as bad service.
Frederick points out, “Often what someone interprets as poor service is beyond the server’s control.” For example, “Maybe the hostess didn’t let the waiter know she seated you, so she had to wait too long to be greeted. Maybe the bartender didn’t refill the pineapple juice on the previous shift and now there’s a delay in your cocktail.”

You should always tip some, even if not 20%
While 20% is the gold standard for a good tip, you can leave less if you need to, as long as you leave something, Badea said. He suggests that tipping is just the cost of doing business when going to a restaurant, regardless of the service. “It should be factored into your bill when dining out, although you can still go above and beyond for exceptional service.”
Robert Johnson, founder of Sawinery, suggests that you could use a rule of thumb to leave “15% to 20% for good service, 10% for acceptable service, and between 5% and 10% for bad service.”
Given the myriad of reasons why poor service can occur, James Diel, Textel Founder and CEO and financial expert, suggests: “Put your server first and look at the environment around you. Is the restaurant understaffed? Does your server seem stressed? Have some compassion and keep them at least 18% might even be enough to improve their mood and change their day.

Consider speaking to the server or management
Remember that many issues can be resolved through simple communication. Michael Outar, owner of Savebly.com, a personal finance website, suggests: “The best thing you can do is talk to the server first and voice your concerns about the service you’re getting, to see if they can improve the level of service, if not, then take it up to a supervisor or manager. You can always request a new server if the service doesn’t improve. These are all things you must do before you skip the top.”
On the rare occasion that a server is hostile or harassing, youtip co-founder Doug Miles suggests it might be okay not to tip, although he rarely finds such situations. Even in those cases, a discussion with management might resolve the issue, and your tip still benefits the other staff behind that server.

Can you leave a tip on a Visa gift card?
Common with prepaid gift cards
It’s actually not a charge, though it can sure appear that way. It’s something called “tip tolerance” according to LowCards.com, which says that Mastercard, Visa and American Express all do this with prepaid gift cards to ensure you have enough money to pay a tip.

Perhaps you should think twice before using them in a restaurant or in a hair or nail salon.

A woman from Anderson Township found out they have a little secret that can get expensive.
“I will not buy another MasterCard gift card,” said Sandi Hannig.
Hannig said she wrote to MasterCard asking the company to change its policy, which allows them to surprise you with a surprise when you use one of their gift cards.
Card refused at checkout
It happened to her in a hair salon. Hannig said that when her hair was done, she went to the counter and pulled out her MasterCard gift card, which she knew had enough money to pay for the haircut.
But there, in front of everyone – managers and customers – her card was rejected.
“It’s very embarrassing when you have a good card and they say, ‘Oh no, we can’t edit it,'” she said. “When I got home I called MasterCard and they said they had a 20 percent block of money on it for salons and restaurants.
Common with prepaid gift cards
So what is this secret charge? It’s not actually an indictment, although it may appear so.
It’s something called “tipping tolerance,” according to LowCards.com, which states that Mastercard, Visa, and American Express all do this with prepaid gift cards to ensure you have enough funds to pay a tip.
The 20% is actually just a hold on your card and the money will be credited back to the card within a few hours. The same thing happens when you use such a card for gas: the issuer can put a $75 or $100 hold on your card to make sure you have enough money to pay for the gas.
A MasterCard spokeswoman, Beth Kitchener, told WCPO:
“For some purchases, the final price cannot be determined at the beginning of the sale. A certain percentage of the purchase is withheld to ensure the gift card holder does not spend more than the card value.”
Unfortunately, Hannig’s card wasn’t enough to cover both her bill and her tip.
“It sounds like you’re trying to scam them and say I have more money on the card than I do,” Hannig said. “But the card was brand new.”
Sandi Hannig said she wanted to see a change in policy.
“I’m not opposed to tipping,” she said, “but I don’t think it’s MasterCard’s job to ensure that the restaurant or salon gets a tip.”
Whatever you think, this is good to know so you don’t waste your money.

Ask George: Can restaurant gift cards be used toward tax and tip?
Can restaurant vouchers be used for taxes and tips? – Bill T., St.Louis
The short answer: It depends on the restaurant. Generally, chains (big and small) allow it, while local restaurants sometimes don’t.
The long answer: It’s a complex subject, hence the lack of a definitive guideline.
First, unless otherwise noted, restaurants treat unbranded cards (from VISA, American Express, etc.) like a debit card, so the guest can theoretically use it for taxes and tips. However, restaurant cards are subject to policy. Some restaurants treat them like unbranded cards; others specify “food and beverage only”; Still others prohibit the use of certain items (e.g. taxes, tips, alcohol). Most do not allow cash to be returned to the restaurant (hence the phrase “no cash value”), as the card is intended to provide a restaurant experience, not a cash gift.
For example, if a restaurant sells a $100 certificate at face value, it hopes to recoup the entire $100 in food and beverages (which cost about $40). In theory, if a customer spends $20 and tips $80, the restaurant loses money and prefers to issue another gift card for the remainder.
In the case of a discounted or fully compensated gift card (restaurants constantly give them out as promotions to charities), the situation is exacerbated and the restaurant incurs even more costs.
In a typical example, our theoretical diner uses $70 of their $100 gift card, wants to tip the remaining $30, and instead receives a $30 gift card and is asked to tip in cash—an inconvenience, to say the least. To keep the peace (and the guest’s future business), the restaurant often bends the rules and accommodates the guest’s request. In the scenario above, if the guest doesn’t have any cash (which is often the case), a waiter can ask for a dime “other”. Charging a credit card simply to allow the guest to leave a tip.
Speaking of gift vouchers: If a restaurant closes before the guest can use it, all is not lost. Check out the options in this Ask George.
