Capes Costumes – Halloween Costumes
If you’re someone who always waits until the last minute to plan a Halloween costume, this is the Halloween hack for you! For years, I’ve always resorted to my trusty old witch costume whenever I needed a last minute trick or treating getup or fancy dress party. My husband has a handmade leather bird mask he got from a renaissance festival years ago and he always reaches out for it when he wants to scare some kids asking for candy.
But then I discovered the mother of all reusable Halloween costumes: the black cloak. Black cloaks are infinitely adaptable, making them suitable for wizard costumes, vampire costumes, and even a Hogwarts witch or wizard.
With a bit of monster makeup magic, or some well-placed accessories, you can transform a simple black cape into a whole range of characters for the whole family. Another benefit of the black cloak is that it serves as an extra layer of warmth against the elements, which is important for us who live in an area with…seasons. Even a black umbrella wouldn’t ruin the style of your costume if you wore a black cape, which is a godsend considering it rains about a third of the Halloween nights we live.
Here I have compiled my favorite ideas for using a black cape for your Halloween costume.
THE BLACK CLOAKS WE OWN
For the record, these are the black robes I have for our family. There are two options to choose between right off the bat: hooded or unhooded on your cape. You can do both in a pinch, but some costumes would make more sense without the hood, or vice versa.
ADULT HOODED CLOAKS: Ian and I wear these quality double layered hooded cloaks which I absolutely love.
CHILD CAPE: In the photos here my very tall 4 year old is wearing this 36″ hoodless cape and it fits him well. Here is a 30″ black cape for smaller kids.
KIDS HOODED: For a matching cloak to the adult hooded cloaks we have I found this kids version. At 45 inches tall, my son took size M (5-7).
I bought Thomas both of the cloaks above because I think he will get a lot of use out of them, not just for future Halloweens, but for imaginary playtime any time of the year.

1. Get inspiration for your outfit from your favorite character

2. Add a festive headband to your outfit
Make an adorable bat headband, rock cat ears or a little witch hat or choose a bow with a fun Halloween print.
3. Add a touch of orange to your outfit
Rock black jeans with an orange sweater or add an orange statement necklace to your outfit. Speaking of…
4. DIY a Halloween statement necklace
This spider chain is totally creepy. Find a fun DIY necklace or buy one from the store (Claire’s has *tons* of perf options). It will add just a little touch of Halloween to your outfit.
5. Wear a pumpkin t-shirt
Jack-O-Lantern t-shirts work as foolproof pumpkin costumes. Make your own by painting on a plain orange t-shirt, or find one at WalMart, Target, etc.
6. Spice up your nail art
A Halloween-inspired manicure is subtle. Plus, you can leave it on after October 31st to extend the Halloween season just a tiny bit.
7. Experiment with bold lipstick or eyeliner
Don’t want to paint your whole face to decide on a costume? That doesn’t mean you can’t experiment with makeup. Try an orange or purple lipstick if you’re feeling bold, or a cat eye for big #felinevibes.

What do you wear under a cloak costume?
Under a thick-fabric cape you can wear a minidress or a shirt with jeans for a trendy look. It’s a great pairing for thigh-high boots.
Capes Costumes – Halloween Costumes
Every year when looking for a new season outerwear, the cape is always seen as the one tough choice to pull the trigger. Our buying behavior is often inhibited by not knowing how to put them on, so we end up choosing a coat or a down jacket, believing that it is the easiest option. Well, we want to change your mind and share some styling options with you!
At Marta Scarampi we love a good cape. Because what other outerwear can make you feel like a superhero-meets-very-fancy detective?
The cape plays an important role in the history of folk costumes and fashion. It was born as a drape, evolved as a hooded cloak, and became a garment similar to today’s poncho during the Middle Ages.
We love capes because we have the ability to wear as little or as much underneath as we like, allowing us to navigate through multiple seasons – it also helps us navigate unpredictable weather.
But how do you wear a cape?
We know you see them worn by celebrities and street style icons, and you’re wondering if it’s possible to incorporate a cape into your everyday outfits. Read on for 6 different ways you can style your cape.
1. Pair it with thigh high boots
Under a cape made of thick fabric, you can wear a mini dress or a shirt with jeans for a trendy look. It’s a great combination for thigh high boots. The Bansky Blue Cape in a classic pattern and color is a perfect timeless option for years to come.
2. Layer it over your casual wear
We bet you never thought that a cape could come in handy before and after your workouts and when you run errands. Wear it with your favorite sports outfit and you can leave your bag at home because the Giulia cape has 5 inner pockets thoughtfully added to allow you to carry your daily necessities (phone, credit cards, subway cards, earplugs, sunglasses… etc.) ..). So you have your hands free for your coffee or fresh flowers that you want to take with you on the way home.
3. Define the waist with a solid color belt
We’ve created the same fabric-covered belts (coming soon!) to wear with our iconic Rachel Mondrian capes. If you are someone who loves a good monochromatic look, this is a great way to upgrade the outfit. Comfortable yet elegant, this classic off-white cape will be your everyday go-to.
4. Go full monochrome
What can be fancier than a solid color combination of Red Merlot? Elegant office attire calls for classic garments and our “formula” works wonders: a matching cape + dress. This fail-safe, simple and elegant look is the perfect way to transition a summer dress into fall. You can also save time thinking about whether or not to match them!
5. Pair it with a maxi skirt
Elevate your effortless off-duty outfit by pairing it with a sweater-like cape like the Giulia Cape. Swap a cropped top for a puff sleeve top to create a dynamic look. The Giulia Cape is available in 8 colors. Make a statement with a bold and bold color that will add a fun pop of color to your everyday routine, or opt for neutral colors that have an everlasting allure you can never go wrong with.
6. Mix it up with different textures, like leather!
For an eternally sophisticated look and timeless charm, consider a double-breasted cape like the Charlotte Cashmere Cape, which features a belted waist to accentuate your waist. You can create a fabulously elegant look with a long mermaid dress or wide leg pants for a formal evening event or mix it up with different textures! Pair it with a white button down shirt tucked tight into slim leather trousers that will accentuate your curves and add personality to this chic look.

What material is best for a cape?
Great fabric choices include: cotton, flannel, satin, and wool. You will need fabric for the main, outer part of your cape, and a lighter fabric for the lining. They can be matching colors and patterns, or contrasting ones. Consider using a pattern for one side and a solid color for the other.

Making a no-sew cape is a fun and easy project. To start, you will need 2 yards of durable fabric, such as felt or flannel, in any color you want. If you are making the cape for a child, you will only need 1 yard of fabric. Next, fold the fabric in half lengthwise to form a rectangle. Orient the rectangle vertically so one of the narrow edges is facing you. Use a tailor’s chalk or pen to make a mark along the bottom edge of the fabric, about 11 inches (28 cm) from the crease. How far you mark is up to you; The further down, the longer the cloak will be. Make another mark along the top edge of the fabric, 5.5 inches from the crease. If you want to add width to the cape, make the bottom mark farther from the folded edge. Use a ruler to connect the 2 lines you drew. For the neck opening, place an 8 inch plate or bowl on the top corner of your folded cloak. The side edge of the plate/bowl should be 4 inches (10.16 cm) from the crease. The bottom edge of the plate/bowl should be 5.5 inches from the top edge of your fabric. Trace the plate or bowl with tailor’s chalk or pen. Cut along the lines you drew, trying to stay right inside the lines so they don’t show on your finished cape. Then, using hot glue or fabric glue, attach a square of Velcro to each side of the neck area of the cape. One square goes on the top of the fabric and the other square goes on the bottom of the fabric. This way the velcro straps will stick together and keep the cape in place around your neck.
