Cookie Clicker is an incremental game developed in 2013 by French programmer Julien “Orteil” Thiennot. The user first clicks a large cookie on the screen and earns a single cookie per click. They can then spend their earned cookies on buying assets like “cursors” and other “buildings” that automatically produce cookies. Upgrades are also available and can improve the efficiency of clicks and buildings, among many other mechanisms that allow the user to earn cookies in different ways. Although the game has no ending,[1] it has hundreds of achievements and users can aim to reach milestone numbers from cookies.

First, the player clicks on the large cookie on the far left of the screen and earns one cookie per click. With these cookies the player can buy new assets like cursors, grandmothers, farms, mines, factories, banks, temples and many more that will automatically create cookies without having to click on them. Prices increase exponentially, with each asset costing 15% more than the last asset of the same type purchased. The player can also buy upgrades to increase biscuit production for these buildings. Golden Cookies, small cookies that appear in random locations and disappear after a few seconds, appear periodically and grant effects such as B. Temporarily increase production rate if clicked before disappearing.

After earning a certain number of cookies, the player can “level up”, losing their progress but earning heavenly chips and levels of prestige. Upon reaching a certain number of achievements, the player unlocks different milky colors that appear under the cookie. “Kitten” upgrades earn the player additional production based on their overall achievements. In addition, seasonal events will take place during their respective holidays, which will come with more upgrades and cookies to unlock.

The game features geometric growth: the player starts by baking a handful of cookies, but can quickly reach billions of cookies[2] and eventually reach twelve million (1039) cookies or more. The game has no clear ending.[1]

Julien “Orteil” Thiennot created Cookie Clicker in August 2013. The game was written in a single evening, posted in a link on 4chan, and attracted 50,000 players in a matter of hours.[1] A month after the game’s initial release, it had over 200,000 players per day.[3] Orteil later wrote that traffic had peaked in August 2013 in a day of 1.5 million hits and in January 2014 Cookie Clicker was still getting a consistent 225,000 hits per day.[4] The game has been continuously updated since its release, most notably the “Legacy” update in February 2016 and the “Spiritual” update in July 2017.[5] On October 25, 2018, Oteil launched the game’s Patreon page with the intention of making Cookie Clicker and other Dashnet games a full-time job.[6] On August 8, 2019, the mobile beta for Cookie Clicker for Android devices was released after a long delay.[7]

Cookie Clicker is similar to Cow Clicker, an existing idle game developed by Ian Bogost. Bogost has called Cookie Clicker “the corollary of Cow Clicker”.[3] Oteil later released other idle games like: Idle Game Maker, a tool to create custom idle games without any programming skills; [8] AdventureQuest Dragons, a mobile game created with Artix Entertainment; and infinite legacy.

On August 8, 2021, Oteil announced on Twitter a Steam release of Cookie Clicker with a planned release date of September 1, 2021.[9] The game was released on Steam on the originally announced release date. The release also consisted of a soundtrack composed by C418.

Effects on idle gaming[ edit ]

An IGN article cited Cookie Clicker as one of the few games that played a major role in establishing the idle gaming (also known as incremental gaming) genre.[2] An article in The Kernel describes it as “probably the best-known” game in the genre.[1]

In an issue of Digital Culture & Society, Paolo Ruffino states that the game is “intended to be a parody of FarmVille” (a popular game that Ruffino says could easily be played with an algorithm, since the optimal action is always obvious is), but that it is “equally addictive”. Thus, “the game explores the lack of human agency”.[12] Ian Bogost, the creator of Cow Clicker, similarly notes that “Cookie Clicker is not a game for a human, but one that a computer plays while a human is watching (or not).”[3] Cookie Clicker has been said by reviewers as addictive[2][1] and its fan base has been described as “obsessive”[13] and “almost iconic”.[1] Roisin Kiberd notes that fans of the game have pointed out that playing the game is bad for the environment (since computers are left on 24/7) and leads to reduced efficiency at work.[1]

However, because of their derisively simple mechanics, idle games are also considered by many to be relatively simple or, as one IGN article put it, “super dumb”.[2] Games like Cookie Clicker have used this mix of simplicity and complexity to create a new genre that some might not even consider real games. Orteil himself described his works as “non-games”.[13]

The game has black humor in the names and descriptions of some of its upgrades, achievements, or mechanics, and generally has themes of dystopia, cosmic horror, and apocalypse. Examples include an achievement titled “Global Warming” (after owning 100 factories), a news ticker titled “New Cookie-Based Religion Takes Nation”. and the “Grandmapocalypse”, in which “the screen goes molten red and the central biscuit is attacked by Wrinkle”, and the world in general has been taken over by a hive mind of mutant grandmothers.[1]

In The Kernel, Kiberd opines that the game is “a parable of how capitalism will destroy itself”. Kiberd suggests that Cookie Clicker “saddles [the concept of fun] with ideas about success, achievement and productivity” and “uses its own form as a critique of the larger structures of expectation and reward”.[1]

Reception [edit]

IGN’s Justin Davis describes Cookie Clicker as the “biggest idle game” and says that it “achieves probably the best balance of power yet […] so you feel like you’re flying with every step and that’s how many cookies it generates faster.” than before. But you still can’t wait until the next big milestone is finally within reach.”[2] Boing Boing rated Cookie Clicker as a “highly addictive browser game”.[14] Polygon has described the game as “fascinating” and its fan base as “obsessive”.[13] Destructoid emphasizes that it is “about the pursuit and accumulation of vast wealth” and “gives players the illusion of progress without actually making any significant progress.”[15]

Like almost everything you can harvest in Cookie Clicker, Sugar Cubes are a valuable resource that should help you maximize your cookies per second (CPS). However, they do not unlock direct production upgrades. Instead, they’re used to unlock a variety of building upgrades, mini-games, and other effects.

What are sugar cubes in Cookie Clicker?

Sugar Lumps are small globules of sugar that slowly grow and ripen at the top of the screen. Each one takes several days to form and develop before you can harvest them. While you can click to harvest them early, you will decrease your chances of a successful harvest if you do so.

Sugar Cubes are one of the rarest resources in the game. They take longer than almost anything else to become available and slowly stack. In fact, sugar cubes don’t appear until you’ve passed the one billion cookie mark.

What do sugar cubes do in Cookie Clicker?

Use sugar cubes to upgrade your buildings. Some of these upgrades have two effects: First, they level up the buildings and in some cases unlock mini-games. Second, they increase your CpS by 1 percent per upgrade.

You can also use sugar cubes to progress in certain minigames.

How do I use my sugar cubes?

Because Sugar Nuggets take a long time to accumulate, it’s important to prioritize the upgrades you can buy that you need the most. For now, don’t use your sugar cubes in your mini-games, although it seems like moving a bit faster in-game will increase your CPS. Much more valuable is the permanent increase in your production by upgrading buildings.

Prioritize unlocking minigames early in the game. Later you should increase the building level of all your buildings – especially the garden. Upgrading the facilities that provide the most CPS after unlocking the games and expanding the garden will give you the best return on your Lump Sugar investment.

Upgrade your temple early in the game with a single lump of sugar. This upgrade gives you access to the Pantheon game, where you place gems under ghosts to increase your CpS and other options.

For example, placing a gem under Cyclius, the Spirit of Ages, will increase your CPS bonus by up to 15 percent over a period of time. The duration depends on what gem you put under it. If you place a gem under Vomitrax, the Spirit of Decadence, your Golden and Wrath Cookies will last longer.

Keep in mind that using spirits will also have negative effects. Cyclius temporarily lowers your CpS bonus by up to 15 percent. Vomitrax reduces the CpS generated by buildings.

Upgrade your Wizard Tower once you’ve unlocked Pantheon and your spirits are active. The mini-game associated with the Wizard Tower is called Grimoire. It gives you access to spells that affect your CpS or cause other things.

Force the Hand of Fate is a spell that can summon a golden biscuit. If it backfires, you’ll get an Anger Cookie.

Conjure Baked Goods summons CpS for half an hour, but can backfire and cause you to lose 15 minutes of CpS.

Haggling Spell reduces the price of your upgrades for one minute. Making them more expensive for an hour can backfire.

Upgrade your farms to unlock the gardening minigame. With it you can grow, develop and create new plants in your garden that offer you certain advantages. The size of your garden will increase as you keep improving your farm. After unlocking all the mini-games, focus on expanding the garden with additional lumps of sugar.

Planting Cronerice gives you an extra 3 percent CpS from your grannies.

Planting Common Clover gives you an additional 1 percent chance for a Golden Cookie to appear.

Planting Chocoroot will give you a 1 percent boost to your CpS, and harvesting it at maturity will give you an extra 3 minutes of CpS.

You gain access to the stock market mini-game when you level up your banks. The stock market includes an actual market where you can buy and sell at various prices, offices to upgrade, and stockbrokers to help you more easily afford resources.

For example, if you upgrade your office to Finance Headquarters, you need to buy 500 cursors. It gives you an extra rental slot and 100 extra storage slots to store items in.

Types of sugar cubes

There’s more than one type of sugar cube, although initially, and for a while, you’ll probably only see standard sugar. Common nuggets have no additional effects. Keep an eye out for these other types as they grant different bonus effects.

Forked sugar cubes

A forked lump of sugar looks like a regular lump of sugar with some extra growth on top. It gives you about a 50 percent chance of getting an extra lump of sugar when harvesting.

Meaty sugar cubes

Meaty sugar cubes look like little red meatballs. It gives you an equal chance of getting zero or two lumps of sugar and a 20 percent chance of harvesting a lump of sugar.

Golden sugar cubes

Golden sugar nuggets look like regular nuggets tinted with a golden tinge. It doubles the cookies you have stored in the bank up to a full day CpS. When harvested, it also increases the chance of golden cookies spawning. You get a 10 percent boost for the next day.

Caramelized sugar cubes

Caramelized sugar cubes look like darker golden sugar cubes with a little toothpick through them. You can get one, two or three sugar cubes from them. They also refill your sugar nugget cooldown.

How do you get sugar cubes?

You must have the game open for different sugar cubes to grow. If you run it offline, make sure you access it once a day. If you don’t, only regular sugar cubes will spawn.

Cube sugar ripeness

Sugar cube ripening is a slow process. It takes 20 hours to mature, at which point you can harvest it if you wish. However, you have a 50 percent chance of losing the clump if you harvest it at this stage.

After the clod is ripe, it takes another 23 hours to ripen and you can harvest it without penalty. When another 24 hours pass, the piece of sugar falls down and is automatically collected.

Sugar Lump Auras, Upgrades and Effects

There are a variety of upgrades, auras, and effects that can alter your Sugar Nugget progression.

Heavenly Upgrades

These upgrades are purchased with Heavenly Chips that you earn for leveling up.

The Stevia Caelestis upgrade costs 100 million heavenly chips and ripens sugar cubes an hour faster. You must purchase Wrinkly Cookies as a prerequisite for this upgrade.

Once you’ve unlocked Stevia Caelestis, you can choose Sugar Baking for 200 million heavenly chips. This gives you an extra 1 percent CpS for every sugar cube you have that isn’t used.

With Sugar Baking unlocked, you can unlock Sugar Craving for 400 million heavenly chips. With this, you can use the Sugar Rush effect to boost your CpS to 300 percent for an hour in exchange for a lump of sugar. However, you can only use the Sugar Rush once per level up.

If you have unlocked the celestial upgrade Lucifer and bought Stevia Caelestis, you can get Diabetica Daemonicus. It costs 300 million heavenly chips and has the same effects as Stevia Caelestis.

Diabetica Daemonicus gives you access to Sucralosia Inutilis for 1 billion heavenly chips. It causes forked sugar lumps to grow 5 percent more often. It also increases the chance of it dropping two lumps of sugar by the same amount.

Featuring Sugar Craving and Diabetica Daemonicus, Sugar Aging Process is available for 600 million heavenly chips. It causes every granny you own to ripen sugar cubes six seconds faster. This is limited to 600 grandmas.

You can select auras once you’ve sacrificed enough buildings to Krumblor.

Dragon’s Curve increases the growth speed of sugar lumps by an additional 5 percent and increases the chances of non-normal sugar lumps appearing.

Reality bending has several independent effects, but it increases both sugar lump aging and the chance of getting an unusual sugar lump. If you have it active with Dragon’s Curve, the other effects will disappear and Reality Bending will make the sugar nuggets mature and mature faster.

If you select Rigidel, Spirit of Order in the Pantheon mini-game, your sugar cubes will mature faster. Depending on which gem is slotted, they can be ready 20, 40, or 60 minutes earlier.

If you grow Juicy Queenbeat in the gardening mini-game, you’ll get a Lump of Sugar when you harvest a mature plant.

Discovering every seed in the gardening mini-game unlocks the Sacrifice Garden tool. This kills every plant and seed in your garden but gives you ten lumps of sugar.

Sugar Cubes are valuable because they increase your CpS, upgrade your buildings, unlock games, and can even be used to advance those games faster. Choosing upgrades, auras, and effects that prioritize your sugar cube production can help you maximize your biscuit production quickly. Just make sure you don’t harvest too early and miss your chance to upgrade.

In Cookie Clicker you start with zero cookies, no cookies at all. There’s a big cookie on the screen, but it’s an icon. It’s not a real cookie. It’s just a physical representation of your intent to bake a cookie. You can click on this big cookie to bake your first cookie. You can click the cookie over and over again as many times as you like to create more and more cookies. Here’s a little cookie rain. There’s a handful of cookies. Click click click. If you click fifteen times and bake fifteen cookies, you can buy a second cursor that will automatically click the cookie every 10 seconds. That’s six cookies a minute without lifting a finger.

And so Cookie Clicker starts playing itself. But you can’t look away. Things could be more efficient. More cursors could be used. In two minutes you could even afford a grandma to bake your cookies. You could turn out a hundred cookies a minute if you put your mind to it. Imagine. Imagine what you could afford. Imagine all those cookies.

It’s been two days. I make about a billion cookies every four seconds. Help.

Cookie Clicker reveals some seriously faulty wiring in our monkey brains, part of a lobe senselessly shackled by increasing numbers and slowly inflating progress bars. Your cookie business starts small, but grows exponentially as you spend your bank of baked cookies on better forms of cookie production: grandmothers, farms, factories, and so on. The number of cookies you have isn’t that important, because what you’re really trying to do is increase your cookie output, your CPM (cookies per minute), by investing in better upgrades and buildings.

At any point in your career, the next level of production seems inscrutably efficient, a goal that, once achieved, would put you on an easy road as far as cookies are concerned. If cookie farms are all you can afford, your very first cookie mine is an earth-shattering gearshift, a stepping stone to a whole new plateau of cookie production. Seeing your CPM boot up as you get into new technology and watching your total cookie count spiral upward delivers an endorphin hit that lasts for minutes. It’s a rush as strong as any I’ve felt playing a real, real video game, which is deeply concerning from an artistic standpoint. All those millions that have been spent developing Grand Theft Auto, when really we just wanted to see the numbers go up.

It’s extra fun to unlock the sillier later techs and upgrades. It’s a shame they aren’t hidden from the start, though, so it’s not surprising when you start collecting cookies by the thousands from the demonic Cookieverse, or time travel back in time to retrieve millions of cookies before they do to be eaten. But every time you make progress, there’s that dizzying acceleration in CPM, an adrenal gland next to your kidneys squirting its excitement juices into your gut, sedating you and exhilarating but already craving your next fix. Sure, you’re using inverted grannies from the cookie dimension to boost your baking rates, but you need to start condensing antimatter into cookie dough. You need it.

There is something you are working towards. I won’t say what, but things are beginning to happen, dark forces are beginning to coalesce, and your unwavering ambition in the face of ethics and humanity – your love of cookies – may come back to haunt you. Is it worth playing so much cookie clicker to get to this point? no Not worth playing Cookie Clicker at all. Every second spent with a tab open is a wasted second. You don’t need a rating to decide whether or not you want to play Cookie Clicker. You open the tab and she decides to play against you.

(As a final note, there are occasions in Cookie Clicker where you’re forced to return to the coal mine yourself and click along with your army of cursor machines.
