1.Lychnis Coronaria

Lychnis coronaria, also known as catchfly, is one of my favorite plants with silvery-grey, silky leaves and small, bright cherry-red to mauve flowers.

Lychnis flowers in summer and the color of the flowers is so intense that they are almost luminous. They grow to about 1.5 to 2 feet (46 to 61 cm) tall, with numerous flowers on branching stems.

If you cut off the flower heads after they die, the plants will continue to flower profusely throughout the summer.

Each year I prune my Lavatera straight back, almost to the ground, and the following year they will spread about 305cm tall and wide. They are a beautiful pink-purple color and blend well with other plants in the same color spectrum – I grow purple wild geraniums, pink phlox and purple lavender alongside them and they look heavenly all summer long.

They start blooming in late spring or early summer and usually continue into late fall or early winter. If the winter is mild, however, they will bloom until January – mine did.

3. Black Lily

Although it’s called Black Lily, you can see in the picture that it’s actually purple.

This is a spectacular shade-loving plant with beautifully shaped leaves that appear in spring and die back in summer, reaching a height of 60-90 cm. The flower has a definite lily shape, with gothic connotations due to the sombre color.

There are two downsides if you are considering growing this plant:

It has a strong, unpleasant odor (which actually attracts pollinator flies); and The flowers only last two or three days, a week at most.

Nonetheless, I think it’s worth growing her for her interesting properties.

4. Purple Clematis

Clematis come in a wide variety of colors and shades, from white and pink to blue and purple.

The roots need shade, but the rest likes sunshine (as a climber this is not a problem). You can simply plant it at the back of the garden border along a sunny wall or fence where the plant’s bottom is protected by other plants growing in front of it.

However, last year this didn’t work so well for me as it was behind a huge and healthy Lavatera (which you can see in the photo above) and the beautiful purple clematis flowers could hardly be seen.

This year I’m growing a few more clematis on a trellis on a wall next to my living room window so I can look out and see them. . . heavenly!

5. Ajuga Reptans

With its purple flowers, Ajuga reptans makes a good ground cover. It is an attractive, low-growing plant. It grows to a height of 10-35cm with deep purple flowers and mauve leaves and spreads fairly well.

Ajuga tends to dry out in hot weather, so it needs watering in summer. It has a very long flowering period and the small buds just keep coming.

I grow them in my rock garden and in front of the flower bed as ground cover.

What about monochrome gardens?

Sometimes gardeners get stumped when it comes to advanced garden design, such as growing only plants of a certain color – for example the famous white garden at Sissinghurst in England.

One of my friends is trying to do just that, but it’s quite difficult to completely strip your garden of color and only plant white flowers while also making sure there are flowers throughout the flowering season. Does this idea appeal to you?

6. Vervain

Verbena is a plant with small flowers that can grow very tall. The verbena above has been blooming all summer, and flowers are still blooming even in mid-November. I planted it in the wrong spot though – at the very front of my rock garden – whereas it would look better flowering towards the back of a border.

You may be wondering why I planted such a tall plant where it towers over all other flowers and plants. There was some logic: I thought it was the shorter type of verbena, growing to around 23cm tall. I never thought that there was a large variety called Verbena bonariensis that grows up to 150 cm. They look very pretty in a group of them planted together.

Looking ahead, it would look especially nice with yellow Verbascum, which is also tall, and some tall grasses and Eryngium and Echinops to accentuate the purple tones. You can see my verbascum just a little further back, in the middle of the picture. That was in the wrong place too, way too big to stand in the rock garden.

7. Hellebore

There are many different types of Hellebore. The one pictured is a very special one that I bought from the Royal Horticultural Society.

Hellebore is a perennial. When the leaves turn brown you can simply cut them back and maybe keep some of the seed pods for planting. Depending on the variety, they grow to a height of 30 cm to 1 m.

Be careful though, as contact with the juice from the seed pods can cause an allergic skin reaction. So don’t touch them for more than a few minutes and wash your hands afterwards.

8. Osteospermum

Osteospermum is a daisy-like flower and comes in multiple colors. I chose the one shown in the picture for my garden because I love the delicate shades from pale purple to white with gray undertones.

The petals open in sunlight and close when the sun goes down or when the weather is not very bright. I love seeing the variations in a single day – when I get up early at dawn and go outside to see it, the petals are quite tightly closed.

Osteospermum is an easy plant to grow and only needs to be killed when the flowers are wilting to encourage more flowering. Then cut them back once flowering has stopped in winter to make a nice compact plant for the following year.

It blooms over a long period and seems happy in full sun or partial shade, up to 20 inches (50 cm) tall.

9. Periwinkle

Periwinkle, also known as Vinca, is a low growing plant which makes it a good ground cover.

It has glossy dark green leaves and beautiful purple flowers in spring and continues to bloom sporadically the rest of the year. Vinca Minor has smaller flowers and leaves measuring 3 to 6 inches (7 to 15 cm) tall and Vinca Major is a taller plant at 6 to 18 inches (15 to 45 cm) but looks similar.

Evergreen grows under trees. If you are not careful to restrict its growth, it will completely cover a rock garden in about three years.

10. Hosta

Hostas bloom briefly in beautiful shades of purple and white in late summer, but are grown primarily for their ornamental foliage. They grow up to 60 cm high and spread.

Those purple flowers look beautiful, but my hostas are mostly eaten by slugs, so the flowers don’t last as long as they should. It only takes a snail or snail to escape my various snail treatments and leaves and flowers are gone in one night.
