This makes the other steps much faster and requires much less effort. If you need to resurface the awning while it’s in place I would recommend hiring simple scaffolding rather than trying to do it all up a ladder.

Step 2: Use a wire brush to remove rust

You should start by rubbing the wire brush over large chunks of rust. We recommend lightly brushing the entire exposed surface. You don’t have to go down to the bare metal, but creating emergency tracks in the existing paint layer speeds up step 3.

Step 3: Sand the awning

This can be done either by hand with sandpaper and some elbow grease, or with a hand sander. The key is to go over the entire area until it feels smooth.
