How to Install a Ridge Cap of a Metal Roof
Metal roof: Installing the ridge cap
The metal ridge cap is the trim that is attached along the ridge of the roof – the apex where two roof slopes meet.
A ridge cap is not normally installed until after all of the metal roofing panels and all other trim is in place. In other words, it is put on last – the cap to the job.
Most ridge caps come in 10ft 6in pieces. They are meant to cover 10 feet of the ridge, with a 6 inch overlap between pieces.

Closure strips are used to prevent dirt, insects and driving rain from getting under the gaps between the panels and the ridge cap. There are two types of fasteners: fixed and vented.
Solid fasteners – also called “external fasteners” – are usually made of dense foam. They come in 3 foot long pieces designed to fit snugly over the ribs of the roof panels. They are placed end to end and fastened along the edge of the top row of panels where the panels and ridge cap meet. Each piece is also designed to interlock with the next. Lined up, they form a continuous, watertight and airtight barrier.
Vented shutters or “profile vents” have a profile similar to closed shutters – matching the ribbing of your roof panels. A common type is 3 inches wide and comes in rolls 50 feet long. The vented closure prevents bugs and water from getting in, while allowing hot air to easily escape from the attic.
Metal Ridge Cap Installation Steps
Center a piece of ridge cap on top of building. Make a mark on the bottom edges of the cap (both sides) at one end of the ridge. See image below. If the comb is only 15 to 20 inches long, repeat step 1 on the opposite end of the comb. For a longer comb, move along the comb and repeat step 1 about every 15 minutes until you reach the opposite end. Set the piece of ridge cap aside and draw a chalk line between the marks. You should end up with 2 chalk marks – one on each side of the comb and running its entire length. Following steps a-c below, attach external closure strips (or a vented closure) along the full length of the ridge on both sides of the roof. The edge of the fastener should be 1/4″ above the chalk line (i.e. 1/4″ towards the tip). [Note: Steps a-c provide a general method for installing fasteners. Check the instructions for your roofing system before you begin, as they may differ.] Run a strip of caulking tape the full length of the ridge, about 1 inch above your chalk line. Repeat on the opposite side. If there is a piece of paper running along the top edge of the weatherstrip, remove it.
Run closure strips down the length of the ridge, locking end to end and pressing down onto the sealing tape.
Run another strip of sealing tape along the top of the locking tabs. For now, leave any paper backing in place.
The vented shutter is installed the same way, except it is rolled out and not filed in 3-foot pieces.
5. Starting at the end of the ridge where the first panel was installed, install the first piece of ridge cap.
Check the design and instructions for your specific roof to see if the ridge cap should be placed flush with the end of the ridge or with an overhang. In the example image below, the ridge cap extends ½ inch beyond the edge of the roof.
Without allowing the ridge cap piece to touch any exposed caulking tape, center it directly on the ridge, using the ridge itself and the chalk lines you created earlier as a guide.
When you are sure you have positioned the ridge cap correctly, place it on the clasps and press down to ensure good contact.
6. Attach the ridge to the panels below. In the example image below, the screws are placed so that they go through the center of every other major roof panel rib. For such details, you must consult the instructions for your specific roof.
7. Place the next piece of ridge cap 6″ over the first and repeat steps 5 and 6.
8. Drive down the ridge until you reach its end. It may be necessary to trim the last section of ridge cap to your ridge length.

Phase 1: Prepare to install the Ridge Cap
Roofs are not always square. When installing the roof panels you want to keep the eaves or low side of the roof nice and flush. You don’t want the metal roof to go in and out with each panel sticking out further than the previous panel. This makes the roof look sloppy and unfinished.
We recommend a 2 inch gap between the metal roofing panels at the apex of the roof. This allows you to move the slide up or down on the roof. The purpose is to keep the roof panels straight and flush at the lower eaves. If the metal roofing is too long, the excess roofing can be shifted to the top of the ridge and the panels at the eaves will appear straight.
Phase 2: Cutting and finishing ridge cap ends for a metal roof
Make a 1 inch mark on the outside of the ridge cap. Use a screwdriver to pry both hems within the 1″ mark. Cut off an inch of the hem on each side. Line up your speed square with the slope of your roof and mark a straight line. Use a protractor to determine the angle of the line. Cut off the ridge cap Using a hand hem, fold the uncut left side 90 degrees. Fold the raw edge 90 degrees right side down

Phase 3: How to install ridge cap foam closures on a metal roof – for a non-vented ridge cap
Apply butyl tape sealant Place the butyl tape so that the ridge fasteners enter the center of the butyl tape once the ridge cap is in place. Attach the outer foam seals. Apply silicone sealant to the top of the exterior foam seals and the gable as shown. The foam closure has no self-adhesive backing. The double-sided butyl tape is tacky, resulting in easier installation of the foam closure strips.
If you have a non-vented ridge cap, you will need foam closure strips. However, if you have a vented ridge cap, you should skip this step and read the instructions below to install the Profile Event Latch to allow your ridge cap to be vented.
Phase 3: How to Install a Ridge Cap Vent for a Metal Roof – for a vented ridge cap
There must be a 2 inch wide opening at the ridge for ventilation. Install ProfileVent ½” to 1″ at an angle from the edge of the ridge cap.
If you have a vented ridge cap, a ridge vent such as ProfileVent® is required. However, if you have a non-vented ridge cap, you should skip this step and read the instructions above to install foam closure strips.
Phase 4: How to attach the ridge cap for a metal roof

Phase 5: How to lap the ridge cap on a metal roof
The ridge cap is typically ten feet to twelve feet long and most roofs are taller than twelve feet. In this case, the ridge cap must be overlapped.
When overlapping the metal ridge cap, the overlaps must face the opposite direction of your metal roof’s line of sight. For example, you want the overlap to face away from your driveway. If overlapping a metal ridge cap, apply silicone sealant 2 inches from the inside overlap. Overlap the ridge cap six inches. Trim the last piece of ridge cap to fit, allowing for the six inch overlap and 1 inch needed to prepare the ridge cap end. Do not leave the raw edge of the ridge cap exposed. The exposed edge should be below the overlap.
Note: This is not mandatory, but your roof will look nicer if you follow this step.
