Even more so than big game, ducks, geese and upland birds require careful handling and storage if you wish to preserve them for taxidermy. Delicate feathers and bones can wrinkle and break much more easily than hair or hardened antlers.
DO NOT ring the duck’s neck after shooting. DO NOT gut or pluck feathers. Either tuck the head under a wing or tuck it over the back. Protect from sunlight and store in a freezer bag (keep a freezer bag handy in the field, just in case). Freeze as soon as possible. Broken bones can be repaired, but missing or broken feathers are not, so keep the duck where it will be untouched until you freeze it.
For prolonged storage in the freezer, wrap the legs and head in a damp paper towel to prevent freezer burn.
Nylon stockings are only suitable for transport from the field, NOT for storage as they do not prevent freezer burn.
