Eid Salah is a special prayer commemorating the end of Ramadan on the day of Eid ul-Fitr and the sacrifice of Prophet Abraham on the day of Eid ul-Adha. Muslims around the world perform this salah twice a year and the method is different from daily prayers. It consists of two rak’ahs (units of prayer). It is part of the Sunna that this prayer is performed in an open space, such as a large field, rather than in a mosque. All male Muslims are required to perform Eid Salah, and female Muslims are encouraged to participate, although they must observe hijab and other mosque ordinances.[1] This article covers the two common ways of performing Eid Salah: with six takbirs and with twelve takbirs.

Is Eid prayer mandatory?

According to Hanafi scholars, Salat al-Eid is Wajib (obligatory). To Hanbali jurisprudence, it is Fard (necessary; often synonymous with Wajib) and according to Maliki and Shafiʽi schools, it is considered to be Sunnah Al-Mu’akkadah (“confirmed Sunnah, “continuously performed and never abandoned”) but not mandatory.

Special prayers for Islamic holidays

Eid prayers, also known as salat al-Eid (Arabic: صلاة العيد‎‎‎‎‎) are holy holiday prayers in Islamic tradition. The literal translation of the word “Eid” in Arabic is “feast” or “feast” and is a time when Muslims gather with family and the larger Muslim community to celebrate.[1]

There are generally two central Eids that take place according to the Islamic lunar calendar (hence the additional name Șālat al-‘Īdayn (Arabic: صلاة العيدين “Prayer of the Two Eids”):

Eid al-Fitr [2] (Arabic: عيد الفطر‎‎), also known as the “Lesser Eid”, is a celebration marking the end of Ramadan, the holy Islamic fasting month, and welcoming the new month of Shawwal, and lasts for a period of three days. Compulsory charity or zakat, especially zakat al-fitr (zakat of Eid al-Fitr) is offered to the poor by every financially able Muslim (preferably before offering prayer) to ensure that those less fortunate do so as well may you take part in the happy holidays.

(Arabic: ), also known as the “Lesser Festival”, is a celebration marking the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting, and welcoming the new month of Shawwal, and lasts for three days. Compulsory charity or zakat, especially zakat al-fitr (zakat of Eid al-Fitr) is offered to the poor by every financially able Muslim (preferably before offering prayer) to ensure that those less fortunate do so as well may you take part in the happy holidays. Eid al-Adha (Arabic: عيد الأضحى‎), the “Great Eid” or “Oath of Sacrifice”, is performed on the 10th after Mecca). This Eid follows the day of Arafah[3], which is considered the holiest day in Islam, and serves as a commemoration of Ibrahim’s obedience and faith when he is tested by Allah.[4] Efficient Muslims sacrifice an animal (qurbani) whose provisions are to be shared among friends, family and the poor alike as alms.[4] Those who are unable to offer qurbani but meet the requirements to do so may offer a zakat donation instead.[5][6]These obligations apply to any Muslim of legal age, regardless of gender, as long as they meet the requirements.[7] Its duration is 4 days.

There is no fixed date for the Eid holiday as it changes from year to year. This is due to the nature of the lunar calendar, which calculates months based on the phases of the moon, as opposed to the Gregorian solar calendar, which is most commonly used today. The lunar calendar is about 11 days shorter than the Gregorian, and therefore the corresponding date moves backwards by about 11 days each year. This also applies to other public holidays such as the Chinese New Year or Rosh Hashanah, which are also based on the lunar calendar.[8] The date typically varies in locations around the world, but many communities choose to follow reports of the crescent moon sighting in Mecca for consistency.[9]

Name variations[ edit ]

Eid greetings [ edit ]

The usual greeting on the days of Eid festivals is “Eid Mubarak” which means “Have a blessed Eid” and is often accompanied by other forms of cultural greetings and customs.

Place and time[ edit ]

Eid prayers are traditionally offered in an open space (such as a musalla or eidgah) or field available for prayer, weather permitting.[10] The technically fixed time of Salat Al-Eid as laid down in the Qur’an and the Sunnah (sayings, teachings and deeds of Muhammad) begins when the sun is about ten feet above the horizon – about the height of a spear until it reaches its meridian – approaches its zenith. In general, it is recommended that the prayer be performed in the morning, any time after sunrise and before noon.[11]

The time for Eid al-Fitr prayer may be delayed while the prayer of Eid al-Adha is accelerated. This is to ensure that there is enough time to facilitate the distribution of zakat before prayer and the subsequent offering. This is a proven Sunnah and has been well recorded in hadith books.[7]

The set prayer times vary depending on the local Masjids and larger congregations may offer two prayers to give as many people as possible the opportunity to say the prayer.

Degree of importance[ edit ]

The degree of importance of the Eid prayer varies between different madhhabs or schools of Islamic thought. According to Hanafi scholars, salat al-Eid is Wajib (mandatory). According to Hanbali jurisprudence it is fard (necessary; often synonymous with wajib) and according to Maliki and Shafiʽi schools it is considered sunnah al-mu’akkadah (“confirmed sunna, “continuously performed and never abandoned”), but not mandatory .[12]

Process and ritual[ edit ]

Aside from actually praying the salah, another part of the Eid prayers is the preaching of a khutbah, or Islamic sermon, such as is given weekly on Fridays in Jumu’ah (compulsory Friday prayers). While the sermon before salah is held for Jumu’ah, after salah it is held for Eid. This is consistent with Abdullah ibn Umar’s narration that Muhammad performed the Eid prayers in this order.[13]

The Eid prayers also take place without the usual invocation of the adhan or iqama (Arabic call to prayer), which is usually invoked before each salah. This is according to the traditional narration of Jabir sin Samurah, who had prayed Eid Salah behind Muhammad and found that the calls were not made.[13]

Another specific feature of Eid prayer is the number of takbir, or the invocation of the phrase “Allahu Akbar” (“God is great”), which is recited in each rakat (prayer unit) of salah. The takbeer for regular salah (as well as most sunnah and special salah) is invoked only once at the beginning, with repetitions between prayer steps. According to hadith narrated from ‘Amr bin Shuaib through generations, Muhammad completed 7 takbirs in the first rakah of the Eid prayer and 5 in the second and then began to recite the Qur’an.[14] The Hanafis complete 3 takbirs before reciting the Qur’an in the first rak’ah and 3 takbirs after reciting the Qur’an before prostrating.

Additional Sunnah[edit]

To reap further rewards from praying the Eid, there are additional recommended steps taken by Muhammad in his day according to his Sunna that Muslims can take. These include bathing or ghusl before attending the festival, putting on your best clothes, eating before Eid al-Fitr prayer and waiting until after Eid al-Adha prayer to eat, saying the takbir to and from the site of the Eid and then prayer for the remaining days of the festival, as well as choosing an alternative route home from the prayer path.[15]

Women and Eid Salah[edit]

Eid festivals are meant to be an event for all members of the Muslim community, including women and children. According to the Hadith narrated by Nusaybah Bint Al-Harith (Umm ‘Atiyah), women young and old were called to come out and participate in the joy of Eid and reap its blessings.[16]

Eid prayer is performed in the same manner as in the mosques, however there is no khutba (sermon) preached by the imam of the mosque. It’s like any normal daily prayer.

The Eid prayer has two rak’ahs, but it has additional “takbirs”. Takbir, referring to when “Allah-Hu-Akbar” to start the prayer and raising hands to ears, is an Arabic word. During normal prayers, “Takbir” is only said once, but for the Eid prayer, you must say “Takbir” 12 times in two rak’ahs (this is the procedure used in the UAE).

One can say seven takbir in the first rak’ah and then start reciting the Qur’an as is done during normal prayers. You must say an additional five takbir at the beginning of the second rak’ah and then finish your prayer as usual.

In mosques, it is the imam who preaches the khutbah (sermon) of Eid, but this is not permitted when the prayer is performed at home. The prayer can be performed alone at home or with family members.

During Ramadan, Muslims celebrate Roza for a period of 30 days. Eid depends on the sighting of the moon, which usually occurs on the 29th or 30th day of Ramadan. The exact time and date of Eid ul-Fitr will be confirmed after the crescent moon is sighted.

Eid is now to be celebrated in India on May 25 as the moon could not be sighted on Saturday night, said Ahmed Shah Bukhari, the shahi-imam of Delhi’s Jama Masjid. Bukhari has also appealed to people to offer Eid Namaz in their homes due to the coronavirus outbreak and lockdown.

The Eid prayer begins with the intention of offering two Wajib rakats of Eid-ul-Fitr-Salah with Wajib tak beers. You must start your salah with niyyah and then recite the thanaa. Next you need to raise your hands to your ears and say Allahu Akbar. This marks the completion of the first takbir. After saying that you must drop your hands to the sides and recite three Subhan Allah. The second and third takbir must be performed in the same way, except that you must take your hands to tie them on your chest instead of placing them on your sides. Complete your first and second rakat while listening to Imam as he recites Surah Fatiha and one more Surah. Again, recite the three takbir as it was done before, but instead of tying your hands, place them on your sides. After the prayer, khutbah is performed. It is part of worship and listening to it is Sunnah. During the khutbah, the imam reminds the community of their duties and obligations to Allah, other Muslims and people, and encourages people to fight evil and do good deeds.

Eid prayer times

During the time of the Prophet, companions could not see the moon and they considered the next day as a fast day. But the next day some people came to the Prophet and said that they had seen the moon the night before. The Prophet believed them and instructed the people to break the fast. The next day he offered the people Eid Salah and made it the second day of Eid. This means that if Eid Salah cannot reasonably be held on the first day, it can be offered on the second day.

The time for Eid Salah starts from sunrise on Eid day until Zawal time (i.e. noon). It may be offered 24 hours a day during this time.

Alhamdulillah what a blessing it is to complete Ramadan and salute Eid!

We sincerely hope and pray that we have achieved all of our goals.

The Almighty tells us:

Oh you, who believe! Fasting has been prescribed for you, as was prescribed for those before you, so that you may attain Allah Consciousness. (Qur’an, 2:183)

Almighty has blessed us to witness another Ramadan and deal with Covid-19!

Allah (SWT) gave us the opportunity to purify ourselves spiritually, to draw closer to Him and to help others. Of course, this also includes those who are less fortunate than us.

Allah (SWT) has blessed us and Eid is a moment of celebration!

Eid is such a special blessing that it is almost reminiscent of what the joyous celebration of entering Paradise is like. It is a blessed day of eating, connecting with loved ones virtually and remembering the favor of Allah for us:

Every nation has its feast day and this is our feast day. (Bukhari)

Of course, there is also an element of sadness to this oath. This oath will not be like any other.

It is still not safe to say Eid prayers in public gatherings in the UK and most parts of the world. We must therefore stay at home during this celebration.

But rest assured that the day is a blessed one! You will have the reward of attending Eid Salah and the angels will be there, welcoming and celebrating with us.

HOW TO OFFER EID UL FITR PRAYER AT HOME: STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS

Offering Eid prayer at home is exactly the same as praying for Eid in Mosque. The only difference, however, is that there will be no Eid sermon (khutbah) at home.

The proper time for praying Eid Salah at home starts 15 minutes after sunrise and lasts until 10 to 15 minutes before Dhuhr (noon).

As an imam, when leading the prayer, you must recite the suras from the Qur’an aloud and call the takbir. While the rest of the community just has to follow you.

Here is a step-by-step guide for Eid prayer at home:

The Eid prayer has two rak’ahs (portions) with additional takbeers. They begin with a non-verbal niyah. That is not said out loud. Then you say the first takbir – Takbeerat-ul-ihram (Allahu Akbar), followed by six more takbirs in the first rakah. Reciting the opening prayer is optional.

For each takbeer from the Imam, you must raise your hands and silently recite “subhanallah, walhamdulillah, wala ilaha illallah, wallahu akbar.” After that, the Imam recites Surah Al Fatihah and one more Surah aloud. The rest of the group should listen quietly to the imam during this phase with their arms folded in front of their bodies.

At the call of ‘Allahu Akbar’ you enter a position of bowing known as rukua. Next, at the shout of “Sami Allahu liman Hamidah,” you will stand up again and softly say “Rabbana lakal Hamd.” Next, the Imam will say “Allahu Akbar,” which is an indication to go into Sujud (prostration). After two sujuds, your first rak’ah of Eid prayer is complete. Rise at the call of Allahu Akbar.

During the second rak’ah, five takbir will be called and you will repeat the imam’s call and action. Between takbirs one must say “Subhanallah, walhamdulillah, wala ilaha illallah, wallahu akbar”.

Listen as the Imam recites Surah Al Fatihah and an additional Surah. Then follow the same procedure for rukua and sjud as you did in the first rak’ah. After the two sujuds, sit for tashshahud. Once finished, the Imam will shout “Assalamu alaikum wa Rahmatullah” and turn his head to the right shoulder and then to the left shoulder as well. Just follow the Imam and your Eid prayer at home would be over.

When you pray as an individual, you are your own Imam.

Meaning of Eid prayer

Eid prayers are offered in congregation with the company of family, friends and other Muslims. The prayers are a way of showing gratitude to Allah and instilling a sense of belonging and brotherhood among Muslims worldwide. In addition, the prayers have a direct impact on a person’s life, helping to achieve excellent results and rewards.

What do you say in the Eid prayer?

The Eid prayer has two Rakaat units. Besides this there are six or twelve additional takbirs. There are 7 takbier in the first rakat and 5 takbier in the second rakat of prayer performed on the day of breaking the fast.

How to offer the Eid prayer?

Given below is Eid prayer method step by step along with Eid prayer takbir details.

Eid ul Fitr prayer time

For Eid-Ul-Fitr, it is suggested to postpone prayer so that people can give and eat Sadqatul Fitr before prayer.

Eid fasting and traditions

Eid-Al-Fitr takes place on the first day of Shawwal month and marks the end of 30 days of fasting. Ramadan lasts a whole month during which Muslims must stop drinking, eating and doing bad deeds from dawn to dusk. They must also worship Allah to seek Allah’s pleasure. On the first day of Eid-Al-Fitr, it is traditional to bathe and wear brand new clothes to honor Allah as it symbolizes belief in spiritual renewal.

After staying away from food for 30 days, Eid is the day people celebrate. The day begins with a light breakfast of sweets and dates. The real event begins during lunch, when the whole family gets together and enjoys some local delicacies. The typical treats that are available there are kahk, qatayef and kunafa. Gifts are exchanged between Muslims to show their love for loved ones such as family and friends.

One of the most important components of Eid is Zakat-Al-Fitr, which means “charity of breaking the fast.” Muslim people of means are required to pay these alms regardless of age or gender so that even the less fortunate can enjoy Eid and more than that is done to promote brotherhood and love. With all these beautiful traditions, the joy of remembering Allah and performing the Eid prayer is multiplied.

The Arabic word “Eid” refers to something habitual that recurs and is repeated, so it literally means a recurring event. Islam has two major holidays: Eid Al-Fitrah and Eid Al-Adha.

Eid ul-Fitr (Arabic: عيد الفطر ‘Īdu l-Fiṭr), the Muslim holiday marking the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting. Eid is an Arabic word meaning “feast” while Fiṭr means “quickly break”; and so the holiday symbolizes the breaking of fasting after the end of the Islamic month of Ramadan on the first day of Shawwal.

Eid ul-Fitr lasts three days and is also known as the “Lesser Eid” (Arabic: العيد الصغير al-‘īdu ṣ-ṣaghīr) is called the “Great Eid” compared to Eid ul-Adha which is a four-day celebration (Arabic: العيد الكبير al-‘īdu l-kabīr).

Eid al-Adha (Arabic: عيد الأضحى ‘Īdu l-‘Aḍḥā) “Feast of the Sacrifice” or “Great Eid” is celebrated by Muslims worldwide to commemorate the willingness of Prophet Abraham (Ibrahim) (SA) to sacrifice his son as Act of obedience to Allah (God). Eid is also about spending time with family and enjoying the fact that we all have food and a roof over our heads.

Eid al-Adha is the second of two Eid festivals celebrated by Muslims and is based on the Qur’an. Like Eid al-Fitr, Eid al-Adha begins with a short prayer followed by a sermon (khuṭba).

Eid al-Adha falls on the 10th day of the month of Dhul Hijja (ذو الحجة) of the Islamic calendar. It lasts four days. Eid al-Adha takes place the day after Hajj, the annual pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia.

Eid prayer

The time for Eid prayer is before noon. Like Friday prayer, Eid prayer is always performed in congregation. No Athan or Iqama is invoked for Eid prayers.

One should eat a full breakfast before proceeding to Eidgah, the place where the Eid prayer is offered.

After the Eid prayer, the Imam gives a sermon. Like the Friday prayer, the Eid sermon consists of two parts. It should be noted that the sermon for Friday prayer precedes the prayer while on the occasion of Eid the sermon follows the prayer.

After the two Rak’at Eid-ul-Adha prayers, the Imam and the congregation recite the following words in an audible voice to the glory of God:

Arabic text:

Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, la ilaha illallahu wallhu akbar Allahu Akbar, wa lillahil hamd.

English transcription:

Allah is the greatest; Allah is the greatest. There is none worthy of worship but Allah; Allah is the greatest, Allah is the greatest and all praise is due to Him.

Eid prayers are most commonly performed in congregation in mosques and other designated places, but in case you are unable to attend such occasions, it is also possible to perform Eid prayer at home. In this guide we explain how to pray Eid prayer at home during Eid Al Fitr or Eid Al Adha.

Eid Al Fitr and Eid Al Adha have great meaning for Muslims. Hence, Eid prayers are also an extremely important part of the festive celebrations.

HOW TO OFFER EID-UL-FITR AND EID AL ADHA PRAYER AT HOME: STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE

This year’s Eid will be different due to government guidelines on social distancing
