Place and time[ edit ]

Eid prayers are traditionally offered in an open space (such as a musalla or eidgah) or field available for prayer, weather permitting.[10] The technically fixed time of Salat Al-Eid as laid down in the Qur’an and the Sunnah (sayings, teachings and deeds of Muhammad) begins when the sun is about ten feet above the horizon – about the height of a spear until it reaches its meridian – approaches its zenith. In general, it is recommended that the prayer be performed in the morning, any time after sunrise and before noon.[11]

Aside from actually praying the salah, another part of the Eid prayers is the preaching of a khutbah, or Islamic sermon, such as is given weekly on Fridays in Jumu’ah (compulsory Friday prayers). While the sermon before salah is held for Jumu’ah, after salah it is held for Eid. This is consistent with Abdullah ibn Umar’s narration that Muhammad performed the Eid prayers in this order.[13]

The Eid prayers also take place without the usual invocation of the adhan or iqama (Arabic call to prayer), which is usually invoked before each salah. This is according to the traditional narration of Jabir sin Samurah, who had prayed Eid Salah behind Muhammad and found that the calls were not made.[13]

Another specific feature of Eid prayer is the number of takbir, or the invocation of the phrase “Allahu Akbar” (“God is great”), which is recited in each rakat (prayer unit) of salah. The takbeer for regular salah (as well as most sunnah and special salah) is invoked only once at the beginning, with repetitions between prayer steps. According to hadith narrated from ‘Amr bin Shuaib through generations, Muhammad completed 7 takbirs in the first rakah of the Eid prayer and 5 in the second and then began to recite the Qur’an.[14] The Hanafis complete 3 takbirs before reciting the Qur’an in the first rak’ah and 3 takbirs after reciting the Qur’an before prostrating.

These include bathing or ghusl before attending the festival, putting on your best clothes, eating before Eid al-Fitr prayer and waiting until after Eid al-Adha prayer to eat, saying the takbir to and from the site of the Eid and then prayer for the remaining days of the festival, as well as choosing an alternative route home from the prayer path.[15]

HOW TO OFFER EID UL FITR PRAYER AT HOME: STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS

Offering Eid prayer at home is exactly the same as praying for Eid in Mosque. The only difference, however, is that there will be no Eid sermon (khutbah) at home.

The proper time for praying Eid Salah at home starts 15 minutes after sunrise and lasts until 10 to 15 minutes before Dhuhr (noon).

As an imam, when leading the prayer, you must recite the suras from the Qur’an aloud and call the takbir. While the rest of the community just has to follow you.

Here is a step-by-step guide for Eid prayer at home:

The Eid prayer has two rak’ahs (portions) with additional takbeers. They begin with a non-verbal niyah. That is not said out loud. Then you say the first takbir – Takbeerat-ul-ihram (Allahu Akbar), followed by six more takbirs in the first rakah. Reciting the opening prayer is optional.

For each takbeer from the Imam, you must raise your hands and silently recite “subhanallah, walhamdulillah, wala ilaha illallah, wallahu akbar.” After that, the Imam recites Surah Al Fatihah and one more Surah aloud. The rest of the group should listen quietly to the imam during this phase with their arms folded in front of their bodies.

At the call of ‘Allahu Akbar’ you enter a position of bowing known as rukua. Next, at the shout of “Sami Allahu liman Hamidah,” you will stand up again and softly say “Rabbana lakal Hamd.” Next, the Imam will say “Allahu Akbar,” which is an indication to go into Sujud (prostration). Once finished, the Imam will shout “Assalamu alaikum wa Rahmatullah” and turn his head to the right shoulder and then to the left shoulder as well. After saying that you must drop your hands to the sides and recite three Subhan Allah. The second and third takbir must be performed in the same way, except that you must take your hands to tie them on your chest instead of placing them on your sides. Complete your first and second rakat while listening to Imam as he recites Surah Fatiha and one more Surah. Again, recite the three takbir as it was done before, but instead of tying your hands, place them on your sides. After the prayer, khutbah is performed. It is part of worship and listening to it is Sunnah. During the khutbah, the imam reminds the community of their duties and obligations to Allah, other Muslims and people, and encourages people to fight evil and do good deeds.

Eid prayer times

During the time of the Prophet, companions could not see the moon and they considered the next day as a fast day. But the next day some people came to the Prophet and said that they had seen the moon the night before. The Prophet believed them and instructed the people to break the fast. The next day he offered the people Eid Salah and made it the second day of Eid. This means that if Eid Salah cannot reasonably be held on the first day, it can be offered on the second day.

The time for Eid Salah starts from sunrise on Eid day until Zawal time (i.e. noon). It may be offered 24 hours a day during this time.
