With the engine at TDC, make sure the rotor is pointing toward the #1 cylinder. If not, you will need to pull the distributor and adjust it so the rotor is pointing at #1.

When the cap is placed on manifold #1, the position is directly over the rotor cap contact. From there you can follow the fire order. Counterclockwise for standard rotation, clockwise for reverse rotation.

You can really set it up however you want as long as #1 has been set to TDC via the rotor contact.

I believe it’s clockwise for standard rotation…and the distributor rotates in the same direction whether it’s a CW or CCW rotary motor. I might also add to crank or jog the motor with key with plug number 1. Place your thumb over the connector hole. If it blows out you have top dead center, just go back and align the mark with the pointer on the crank or flywheel, whichever is easier. The timing marks align in two ways, on the compression stroke (correct) or on the exhaust stroke. (180 degrees out of time) is not running. It doesn’t matter where the number 1 is on the cap as long as the rotor is pointing towards the distributor cap contact and the firing order is followed. From there you should be able to start and set the timing.

mercruiser 7.4 (L29) firing order

Hello, everyone. I have a 1999 Mercruiser 7.4 (L29) engine in my Sea Ray that I have had problems with. Part of the problem was a misfire that was persistent and weak. I replaced and rewired the plugs and coil, now it won’t fire. I used the Mercruiser manual: My connector and header looks like this: So I routed all my wires the following way. But now she hasn’t even won fire, let alone misfires. I don’t see anything about rotation in the manual. Is there something I’m missing?
