If I want to connect other devices like a printer, TV, etc., I’d have to get a USB hub, which isn’t cheap if I want to match the speed of the best port on the laptop, the USB 3-C. HP’s tiny Chromebook 11 feels like a toy — it’s thin, light, and cheap, and it’s almost surprising that there’s a working laptop inside. The larger Chromebook 14, on the other hand, feels like a computer. It’s made of grippy, rubbery plastic that’s comfortable in my hands and on my lap, but feels like something in a whole different class than the sleek, metallic MacBook Air or Acer Aspire S7 — but then it’s in a whole different class .

At 4.08 pounds and 0.81 inches thick, the Chromebook 14 isn’t particularly portable. $299 rarely buys much in terms of fit and finish, and with stitching and ridges everywhere you look, it’s not particularly premium either. But it’s solid and sturdy and has already survived a fall off the edge of my coffee table and many trips in my bag. It feels well made and carefully put together, which in some ways is even more important than the raw materials.

It’s far from high-end, but it doesn’t feel cheap

This laptop is designed to get noticed, and it’s nothing but a conversation starter. Everyone who sees it in my apartment or on my desk asks for it, as if they happened to notice a piece of art on the wall. It’s the colors: Available in coral, white and aqua, this is without question the most demonstratively flashy computer I’ve ever used. My salmon-colored Coral model got a few scuffs in my bag, but I’ve only grown fond of the color – and it looks really good on my black coffee table.

Chromebooks have always been small, bare, and focused solely on giving you access to the browser. However, the Chromebook 14 has an SD card slot, an HDMI port and three USB sockets (including two for USB 3.0). They certainly have their uses in Google’s operating system and clearly don’t affect the price of the device much. But HP either takes Chrome OS more seriously than any other manufacturer, treating it as a true Windows equivalent rather than something cheaper and inferior, or it simply recycles chassis designs without much thought or tweaking.

In at least one case it is clearly the latter. The Chromebook 14’s 14-inch, 1366 x 768 display should stay in the storage case HP pulled it out of. It’s big but not particularly bright and doesn’t have great viewing angles – it looks muted and washed out next to the vibrant, colorful Chromebook 11. The bigger problem, however, is that it’s 1366 x 768 on an 11.6-inch screen, and it’s almost unusable when inflated to 14-inches. At 111 pixels per inch, text is blurry and jagged instead of crisp and clear, and small icons can be hard to see. The screen looks like it’s dirty and a shine obscures the image you’re trying to see – but it’s just a bad display. This makes the Chromebook 14 feel like a chore, not a laptop I could stare at all day.

The Chromebook 14’s display is a deal breaker

This is especially frustrating because HP got so many other things right. From build quality to many of its components, the Chromebook 14 might not beat its $299 price tag, but it performs smartly within its limitations. Its trackpad, a problem for a shocking number of laptops, is a surprisingly smooth and glassy experience. The keyboard is crisp and responsive, although the keys are a little rough and the letter labels are just stickers. The keyboard is the only obvious tweak for Chrome OS: the caps lock key has been traded for Google’s global search button, and above the row of numbers are a row of Chrome-specific function keys. The larger chassis leaves room for a comfortable palm rest, well-spaced keyboard, and large trackpad, and HP takes advantage across the board.

Google’s integration of Android into Chrome OS opens a number of doors for doing things on a Chromebook that really shouldn’t be possible. One is to remotely cast your Xbox One, Xbox Series X, or Xbox Series S to your laptop from another room in the house.

This is not officially supported by Microsoft in any way and as such may stop working at any time. We’ve already seen this as Xbox Game Pass streaming seems to be blocked these days. But with more of us spending more time at home with family than ever before, spending time alone with your console and TV might be harder.

So if you’re a Chromebook user, here’s how to launch your game.

A big limitation

Before we proceed, there is one major caveat that needs to be pointed out. As this isn’t officially supported, it hasn’t been optimized for use on Chromebooks, and in my testing, Intel-powered machines deliver a pretty poor experience.

It seems to work much better on ARM devices like the Lenovo Chromebook Duet, but your mileage may vary. It costs nothing to try, so it’s worth taking a look at your own system.

There are two steps to remote play. The first is to set it up on your Xbox console and the second uses the Xbox app for Android (opens in a new tab) which you should download onto your Chromebook. But the second can help with the first.
