4 Ways to Follow Your Inner Compass
Instead of asking what you should do, think about who you want to be.
As a child, I lived in the Philippines for several years, where I learned Tagalog. The language contains a beautiful term for work, hanapbuhay, which literally means “the quest for life.” I’ve always liked thinking about work this way: a journey inward to discover the things that make you feel most alive and make those your work.
At some point in childhood, a well-meaning adult asks, “So what do you want to be when you grow up?” What I like about this question is that it embraces the idea that work is an expression of who you are and who you want to be. But that question takes a strange turn as you grow up. “What you do for a living?” we usually ask each other. Gone is the question of what you aspire to “be”. This shift in focus from “being” to “doing” focuses you solely on the external activities and behaviors you perform for your work, rather than your inner values, strengths, and motivations.
“Most of us think too much about what we ought to do and not enough about what we ought to be,” said the 14th-century mystic Meister Eckhart. “If we paid more attention to what we should be, our work would shine brightly.” How true.
What if we not only made to-do lists for ourselves, but also made to-be lists of what we strive for in our work life and beyond?
You don’t have to work exceptionally hard or find your “dream job” to be in your job. You simply have to be present and allow yourself to experience what is most alive to you, what choices you make about it, and how you act.
Get curious
Try asking yourself the following questions to find out what’s really important to you. By paying attention to what it means to be yourself, aligned and present, you will be able to bring your best to your work and the world.
How do I want to expire each day?
What do I want to focus my energy and attention on?
What brings me joy?
What makes me feel balanced?
What state of mind do I want to be in at work?
What other aspects of my life would I like to pay more attention to?
What kind of person do I want to be at the end of my life?
Follow your inspiration
The answers that emerge from the previous questions shed light on how you can thrive by following your life energy rather than fighting, fighting, or suppressing it. For example, “being” in my work has led me to make decisions that are not motivated by a desire to achieve, but to do work that I find genuinely meaningful and that makes me feel alive. I’ve always made the decision to venture into an area by following what inspired me the most, although that has changed over the years.
To be there
No matter what meaning you give to your work—whether it’s a job (a means to an end), a career (a purposeful pursuit of achievement in a particular discipline), or a calling (a sense of fulfilling a purpose in life)—By As you focus on being fully present, you can better connect with your own vitality within the experience.
Shine on
You don’t have to work exceptionally hard or find your “dream job” to be in your job. You simply have to be present and allow yourself to experience what is most alive to you, what choices you make about it, and how you act. Working in this way you can find success and fulfillment within yourself.
