She often gets emails from appointments with subject lines like, “Help! I found my friend on Tinder!” It’s possible these friends are looking for other options. Or they’re just too lazy to properly deactivate their accounts — especially during the blissful honeymoon of a new relationship.

If you’re ready to ditch your dating profile, here’s a simple guide.

Tinder

Deleting the Tinder app from your phone is not enough to get rid of your profile. To remove it, you need to log into the app and go to the settings. Then select “App Settings” and scroll down to “Delete Account”. Once you have done this, the app will show you the message “Account deleted successfully”.

This means you will lose all your messages and matches. However, if you decide to start swiping again, you can easily create another profile by logging in again with your Facebook account.

If you’re a Tinder Plus subscriber, following these steps will delete your account but not your subscription. To do this, you need to go to the App Store, access your subscriptions and select “Manage”. Either move the auto-renewal slider to Off or select Unsubscribe.

Match.com

Match.com allows you to deactivate your account with the option to restart it within six months of deletion. To do this, go to Settings by clicking on the little cogwheel in the site header to get to the drop-down menu. Once you get to the account settings, select Change/Cancel Membership.

There are a few steps you need to go through, so make sure you get to the confirmation page where you’ll find a “Hide Profile/Deactivate My Account” link. After you click this link, no one but you can see your account – in case you decide to use it again. The website will then send you two emails confirming first the cancellation of your subscription and then the deactivation of your account.

Ok Cupid

You can either delete or deactivate your OkCupid account. Temporarily deactivating your account will remove your profile from the site and you will no longer receive emails, but you can easily restore your profile whenever you wish.

To delete your OkCupid account, visit the Settings page and select “Delete Account”. Your profile will be removed and your username will no longer be available to anyone, including you. If you visit the site again in the future, you will need to create another account.

The website makes it clear that this action is “permanent and irreversible”. So if you only want to close your account for a few months, use the deactivation option instead.

To get rid of your Bumble account, simply log in and visit the settings page. From there, select “Delete Account”. Although this will immediately delete your account, your information will be retained for 30 days in case you change your mind.

JDate

Canceling your JDate account is pretty easy. Simply select the profile thumbnail at the top right of the page, go to Membership Management, click “Remove Profile” and you’re done.

Your profile will be shut down, but the site will save your information in case you open another account in the future.

Happn

To deactivate your Happn account, just go to the left menu and click on the Settings tab. Go to “About” and then select “Deactivate my account”. Easy.

POF allows users to hide their profile – go to “Edit profile” and click on the “To hide your profile from others, click here” link in the menu. Or you can permanently delete your accounts by filling out the required information on this page.

How about we

Go to Settings; Scroll down to “Account” to find the deactivation link. This will hide your profile and terminate any paid subscriptions you may have. Your profile will only reappear if you choose to restore it.

After recovering from a breakup in late 2016, I decided it was time to go on a dating rampage. I reinstalled Tinder (again), added Bumble and Coffee Meets Bagel, and updated my OKCupid profile.

I probably spent at least an hour a day swiping, messaging, and connecting. It felt like the world’s least fun game, but one I had to play if I wanted any semblance of a happy ending (or if I ever wanted to have sex again, real talk).

I had what felt like a billion dates with a billion different people. A handful of these people were interesting. Most weren’t. Regardless of the person, the place, the conversation, there was never a second date during this stretch. Tired of stealing and small talk and men who drank too much and asked too few questions, dating fatigue set in. Quickly.

When I discovered in early 2017 that my ex was dating someone new (friends don’t let friends stalk their ex’s Instagram!), it gave me a renewed burst of enthusiasm for my hateful rotation of dating apps, but when summer rolled around I was done. Done done done. I would rather have eaten a bowl of nails than ever swipe left or right again.

I deleted all dating apps from my phone and embraced my new single life without an app. “Maybe I’ll never find love,” I thought to myself. “But if the compromise never ends in a lousy first date again, I’ll be 100% happy with that outcome.” I swam and biked and danced and read and wrote. I was freed from the scourge of Tinder! Free from small talk and awkwardness and overly drunk pick-up lines and radio silence and crushing, crushing boredom.

Luckily, I met someone amazing in early 2018 and haven’t thought about Tinder since.

That is, until I received a somewhat shocking email in my inbox earlier this month:

I once had a meltdown because I saw that someone I was dating (read: had five dates with and wasn’t exclusive with) was “active two days ago” on their Tinder profile – that was in 2014 and the app has since changed its characteristics. He hadn’t been active the three weeks we had been together and I was devastated(ish). I was new to online dating, asking for what I want and dealing with my feelings. If you’re in those early stages of a relationship, you might be wondering how to see if someone is on Tinder so you can log in, see that they haven’t been active, and confirm that the person who You will not swipe left and right at the same time when chatting again.

Not only do you need to make sure you’re not wasting your time on the person you’re talking to, or alternatively swipe right on inactive profiles, you might be curious as to how you can find someone on Tinder because of your committed long-term relationship and suspect that your partner is cheating on you. A friend of mine recently saw a dating app appear on her boyfriend’s screen when he accidentally swiped “recently deleted apps.”

Whether you’re interested in this topic because you don’t want to swipe straight to ghostly profiles, or you just can’t bring yourself to ask your partner what’s going on, here are your best shots for finding out if someone is is on Tinder.

Use Tinder’s recently active feature

Sorry to be such a downer, but the truth is Tinder doesn’t tell you exactly when profiles were last active. “The only way to find out if someone you know is on Tinder is if you stumbled across their profile,” a Tinder spokesperson told Elite Daily.

This is probably for your own good. Tinder had that nagging feature I mentioned back in 2014 that would tell you exactly when a match was last active? That’s long gone. I promise you I wouldn’t have been overly paranoid if I hadn’t been able to “verify” the person I’ve already dated in real life. Without that paranoia, I might have been a more normal, open date. Now there’s no way to sneak into the app and find out exactly when someone was last on, except in one case.

Tinder has a green dot feature that lets you know that a user has been “recently active” — swipe, chat, update profile, whatever — in the last 24 hours on the app. If you pay for Tinder Gold and Platinum, you have access to this feature and can see who has a green dot in your like grid.

If you don’t subscribe to the paid options, you’ll see the green dot, but the photos in your Likes grid will be blurry. The green dot isn’t something to rely on, however — users have the option to turn off their “last active” status in the app’s settings, according to Tinder, if they “prefer to maintain [a] touch of mystery.” .

If you pay for the premium subscriptions, you also have access to Tinder’s “Control Who You See” curation option in Settings. So if you want to make sure you’re not swiping through inactive profiles and wasting your time, you can change the Control Who You See section to Recently Active. After that, the algorithm gives priority to showing the profiles of those who have recently used the app or are also using Tinder at the moment you are.

That being said, you can’t tell exactly if someone you know has used the app recently or when, but you might still have some information to go from.

If you see them on Tinder, they’re at least somewhat active

While you can’t tell when someone was last active, except maybe in the last 24 hours, seeing their profile on the app is a pretty good indication that the profile is being used.

A TikTok by Canadian user @trinniiitty, which now has over 2.5 million views, went viral in 2020 after he posted a “PSA” claiming that Tinder only shows users who were in the app were. While Tinder has confirmed that it only circulates active profiles, it hasn’t been fully transparent as to what timeframe the algorithm is actually “active” – ​​so we can only speculate for now. Long story short, if you see a person on Tinder’s profiles, they’re most likely actively using the app.

So when you or your friend sees that guy or girl you’ve dated or are fully committed to on the app, maybe it’s time to have a little chat. And when they swear it’s “just an old profile,” you know the evidence is being stacked against them straight from Tinder HQ. And remember, there’s no harm in having screenshots when it comes to talking about cheating.

“You know that if you ask them, chances are they’re lying, unless you catch them in the act — and even then, they can lie,” said Trina Leckie, breakup coach and Breakup BOOST host Podcasts, previously told Elite Daily, “Don’t expect people who are living a lie to tell you the truth.”

Check if they have updated their Tinder profile

If you really want to make sure that any profile you or your friend sees on Tinder is actively being used, then the last option is to switch to full-fledged, old-fashioned social media stalker detection mode.

To see if someone has been on the app recently, you can start by checking the pictures on their profile and seeing if any of them have changed since you last saw them or if they were taken recently . To be sure, you can cross-reference them with their other social media.

Another method you can use is to check the distance displayed on their profile from time to time. As long as you don’t change your location in your settings, if the distance shown on their profile changes, it means they’ve recently used Tinder from a different location.

Doing any of these things can definitely feel like an extraordinarily creepy move, but if you need to know, you need to know. However, it’s important to remember that a confirmed profile update isn’t necessarily a sign that the person is currently actively looking for someone else.

If you find her* on Tinder, here’s how to find her

If you’re using these tips to make sure you’re not wasting your time with inactive, ghostly profiles, now is the time to keep them in mind and open up Tinder — and good luck swiping. On the other hand, if you’re concerned that the person you’re seeing (exclusively or not) is still using the app while you’re dealing with you, you really should bring that up in the conversation.

The main problem here is that you don’t trust your partner. If you’re considering going all out on Tinder stalking, you should also consider asking them directly if they’re cheating. It’s no fun staying in a relationship where you’re constantly worried about being cheated on.

“While hearing the truth can be painful, you’d rather know,” Kerri-Anne Brown, licensed mental health counselor and founder of Healing with Wisdom, told Elite Daily. “Knowledge is what can allow for repair and growth should you choose to remain in the relationship and rebuild with your partner. Even if you do decide to end things, you’ll likely feel empowered to make a decision that you think is best for you and not grope in the dark.”

Even if you’re not in a real relationship yet, instead of scouring the internet for clues where I once mistook someone’s Venmo fee for their aunt for a new girlfriend (not proud), just admit you want more of of the person you are dating than you are currently getting.

Either way, you deserve to know what the other person’s intentions are. Knowing the truth now will be a lot less painful than waiting six more months (months that will inevitably be filled with research and paranoia). Trust me I speak from experience.
