Checking static ignition timing on crossflow
OK now I have oil pressure when cranking my new crossflow (thanks to those who helped me). I’m trying to get him to cough in life and it won’t. I checked for fuel – I’m pretty sure there is fuel in the carbs. Next I look for sparks. I did this by removing the number one spark plug and turning the engine over with a wrench on the crank pulley. I turn clockwise from my perspective in front of the car when I look behind. The spark plug is connected to the HT wire and grounded. I get a spark but I don’t know if it should be where it should be. Ignition timing should be 12 degrees before TDC, checked at 1000 rpm. I check at zero rpm and it occurs somewhere around 35-40 degrees before top dead center. Is that right? I would expect any increase in engine RPM to advance the spark rather than retarding it. So if it’s 35 degrees static, at 1000 rpm it’ll be like that or more advanced, wouldn’t you agree? If I’m right, how is the problem fixed? Do I align the crankshaft so the timing mark on the pulley is at 12 degrees, then turn the distributor until the spark plug fires? Thanks for any help. Starting a brand new engine for the first time is definitely the most stressful and unsettling thing I’ve ever done to my car! Anthony
