It’s the mid-size model in the Transit range, sitting above the Transit Connect but below the Transit in terms of size. 25 upgrades over the years have focused on interior quality, making the Transit Custom more car-like inside than you might expect. You now get all sorts of tech in the van, including Ford’s SYNC3 infotainment system, which is packed with features and really easy to use. There are numerous body styles to choose from, including L1 and L2 wheelbases, while both lengths are offered with H1 and H2 roof heights. This has a stated WLTP fuel economy of 91.1mpg, but that’s mainly because the official test is conducted on a full battery charge. Cargo space and practicality Available in L1 and L2 short and long wheelbase versions, the Transit Custom offers between 6.0 and 6.8 cubic meters of cargo volume, which is competitive for the mid-size panel van class. The Transit Custom has central locking with remote control as standard. For added security, the driver can open a single door without automatically unlocking the others. Reliability We haven’t heard any particular reliability or build quality issues from the Transit Custom, which isn’t surprising given much of the powertrain has been carried over from the previous Transit – which itself had an impressive reputation for durability and reliability. The EcoBlue engines are designed to be relatively maintenance-free and offer variable service intervals based on van usage, allowing owners to travel up to 37,000 miles or wait two years between services.

The Transit Custom PHEV was extensively tested prior to production, with suppliers and local authorities driving many miles across Europe before Ford settled on optimum battery range and payload capacity. Ford has the largest dealership chain in the UK and also has dedicated transit centers across the country. These offer bespoke maintenance for van users, while sales representatives can offer expertise to make the most of Transit ownership. Drive and performance The Transit Custom is a very easy to drive van. There is an 8-way adjustable driver’s seat as standard (top-of-the-line vans get electric assistance) and the multifunction steering wheel can be adjusted for reach and tilt. This should allow riders of all sizes and shapes to feel comfortable. The high seating position provides good visibility and the Custom is fitted with excellent mirrors that have secondary blind spot lenses that are designed with a wide viewing angle, giving you a clear view of what’s going on behind you. You can also add windows to the Transit Custom bulkhead and rear doors, giving you an extra view of the outside and your cargo. The performance and flexibility of the EcoBlue engines are very impressive. Even the 104 hp entry-level unit delivers a torque boost of 360 Nm from 1,375 rpm, jumps off the assembly line quickly and masters inclines surprisingly effortlessly. Throw a full load onboard and it’ll fight a bit more, but overall it’s a formidable unit.

It will be a good choice for operators who mainly do city driving, but if you transport larger loads or cover long distances on the highway, the 128 hp unit is better. Here, with 385 Nm at 1,500 rpm, there is even more power in the mid-range, so that the driver can shift into a higher gear more often. The 168 hp (405 Nm) option turns the Transit Custom into a really fast van, while the most powerful 182 hp version in the Transit Custom Sport turns it into a fast van that will scare many sports cars at traffic lights. The EcoBlue engines aren’t quite as quiet in the Transit Custom as in the larger Transit, but noise levels are still well controlled compared to rivals. The six-speed gearbox is smooth and easy to use, and the steering is light but positive, the best you can find in a panel van. The six-speed Powershift automatic transmission isn’t the best automatic transmission we’ve tried. It tends to downshift the moment you want to accelerate, and while the shifting isn’t jerky, the extra noise in the cabin spoils the otherwise excellent refinement. At motorway speed, there is hardly any wind rushing around the exterior mirrors, and tire and engine noise are also well in check.

Opt for the PHEV model and it’s the most refined model in the lineup, whether you’re running an all-electric drive or using the petrol engine. There’s a big burst of torque as soon as you hit the gas pedal, and the lack of gears means it’s easy to manage. Ford offers a mechanical limited-slip differential on manual transmission versions of the Transit Custom to provide extra traction in slippery conditions. The mLSD setup, sourced from UK specialists Quaife and similar to that found in the Hot Hatches Fiesta ST and Focus ST, is standard on Trail models and an option on the rest of the range. Cab and interior The last Transit had one of the best cab interiors of any van, with space for literally everything. The Transit Custom comes close, but loses some practicality, despite including plenty of storage compartments and boxes. The Transit Custom got the same center stack as the latest Fiesta with the 2017 update, giving you a large, tablet-style screen that sits front and on top of the dash. The touchscreen is easy to use, although as with any of these systems, on a bouncy ride you’ll have trouble pressing the ‘buttons’ on the screen without taking your eyes off the road longer than necessary. A multifunction steering wheel is available, which features controls for the audio, Bluetooth, cruise control and the voice activation system where fitted. 25 The cab is comfortable and well appointed, with air conditioning fitted as standard from Limited trim upwards. Even basic Leader models have an auxiliary input, trip computer, power windows, remote central locking, two 12V charging points, a storage compartment in the passenger seat and a delay in the headlights so you can walk away in the dark before the lights go out.

What do the numbers and letters in a chassis number mean?

So you’ve found the VIN number. As we have already said, the VIN is simply a string of 17 letters and numbers. You could say it behaves like a social security number. While the VIN identifies a specific vehicle — much like a social security number would identify an individual person — it also tells you more.

Each number or letter in a VIN identifies specific information about your vehicle. We will list the meaning of each character below.

1st character: Where the vehicle was built

The VIN is long and contains almost everything there is to know about your vehicle at the time it was manufactured. Deciphering your VIN is not difficult; You just have to know what you see.

How to use a VIN to find my car’s paint code

You’ll notice that we didn’t list a color in any of the character descriptions above. That’s because your VIN doesn’t explicitly state your car’s color code, which is the number used to match the color to a car’s exact shade.

However, you can still determine the color of your car paint using your VIN number. Since your VIN acts as your car’s fingerprint, you can use it to look up your car’s color code via other platforms. You can call your dealer, give them your VIN number and ask for the color code. Another option is to look up color codes online using your VIN.

Although your VIN doesn’t give you the exact paint code or color of your car, it’s a tool to help you find it.

Where else can I find my car’s paint code?

Your car’s VIN gives you a lot of information about your vehicle, but it doesn’t give you your color code. So where can you go to find car paint?

Most vehicles have color codes listed on the inside of the driver’s door jamb. Usually there you will find a sticker with information about the vehicle, including the paint color. There are two paint codes listed on these plates: an interior paint code and an exterior paint code, sometimes referred to as “trim” and “paint” respectively.

In some cases, the color codes prove more difficult to find. If you don’t see color code information in the door jamb, check your owner’s manual. It usually tells you where the color code posters are and takes the guesswork out of finding them.

Should I use the VIN to determine my car paint color?

With a little work you can find your car’s color codes using your VIN, although we think it’s quicker and easier to simply find the color code stickers on your car. If you can’t read the paint code or the sticker is just gone, using your car’s VIN to determine the paint color is a great alternative.
