Using the valve as a choke can reduce the pressure of the propane flowing to the grills, so the flame goes out but the propane continues to flow to the grills. This increases the chance of an explosion or fire if the combustible gas builds up around the grill.

Typically there are three types of propane valves:

1. POL valve

Named after the company that invented them, these are the oldest types of valves on the market. They use a female left-hand thread, i. Always keep the propane tank outdoors

Propane gas is stored as a liquid in pressurized tanks because it is 270 times more compact in liquid form than in gaseous form. When propane is heated to 493°C to 548°C (920°F to 1020°F), it ignites without the need for a flame or spark.

However, propane is flammable in the correct propane/air mixture ratio. If the amount of propane in the air is between 2.15% and 9.6%, the propane can ignite and burn.

Storing propane tanks outdoors in a well-ventilated area reduces the risk of an explosion since the gas will quickly dissipate if there is a leak.

Always keep a propane tank in the shade

While a propane tank is unlikely to explode, you should never store it in direct sunlight. On hot summer days, the ambient temperature can exceed 120°F, which is high enough to warm the tank. As the temperature rises, the gas pressure builds up inside the tank.

Most portable propane tanks have a safety valve that activates after an internal pressure build-up. Once activated, the valve releases the gas into the air if it is allowed to build up and ignite in the presence of a spark.

Always keep gas cylinders in an upright position

It’s best to keep a propane tank upright as it reduces the chance of a leak. Leaving a cylinder on its side can cause a leak if the valve is damaged or compromised. At 0.1162 pounds (52.7 grams) per cubic foot, propane is heavier than air 0.0765 (34.70 grams).

In the upright position, the propane stays down and the pressure valve in the vapor space. The pressure valve is submerged horizontally in the liquid, which could impair its function and trigger a trip.

Check the regulator and hose regularly

Instead, turn off the propane tank and leave the grill unlit for 5 to 10 minutes. If the grill is in an enclosed space, open all windows and doors. If the grill comes with a lid, leave it open as well.

Even though the flames die out, the propane is still flowing out of the tank and escaping through the burners. The propane gas collects inside the grill and around the cooking surface.

If you light the grill again immediately, the accumulated propane could ignite and explode or catch fire.

Waiting up to ten minutes before lighting the grill again allows the propane to dissipate, reducing the risk of an explosion. After ten minutes you can safely light the grill and continue with your grilling session.

Do you turn off propane tanks after grilling?

For safety reasons, always turn off the propane gas bottle after each grilling session. Turning off the grill will keep the gas flowing through its burners but will not stop the flow of LPG gas from the bottle. Instead, the gas continues to flow until it fills the hose, stopping further flow from the gas cylinder.

In theory, if the regulator is working properly and the hose is undamaged, exiting the propane tank poses no hazard. However, it’s better to be safe than sorry and turn the gas off.

If there is a leak in the hose or regulator, the small continuous leak from the propane could eventually empty the tank. If the grill is outside in an airy place, the gas would slowly dissipate in the wind until the tank is empty.

If the grill and tank are in an enclosed space, the gas could slowly build up and create a fire hazard. Because LPG is heavier than air, it doesn’t just float away. Instead, it slowly builds up around the ground by displacing air, making it dangerous. The gas may ignite and explode the next time you light the grill.

It only takes a small flame like a lit cigarette or even static electricity to ignite the accumulated gas and cause an explosion or fire. This means that the gas can explode even if you are not using the grill.

If the regulator on an enclosed grill isn’t working, the gas will collect inside the unit and will likely explode the next time you turn on the grill.
