It’s time to start thinking. about our Christmas business. last year we saw very low profits so we really need to improve things this year. The store wants to double its profits, so we’re very busy. We will meet next Tuesday at three o’clock to discuss this. Please think of some good ideas to increase sales. If we reach the new goal, everyone gets a bonus. If we are not successful, there are no bonuses. The manager will come to the meeting. He will share his ideas with us and listen to our opinions. this is a very important meeting. Don’t miss it.

Critical Analysis of “Don’t you think it’s time to start thinking?” by Northrop Frye

In the piece “Don’t you think it’s time to start thinking?” Frye uses his own voice. He uses an intellectual tone throughout the play. I think he writes to people who hide in clichés and try not to think for themselves. He addresses students by telling them that the power of their ideas lies in articulation. He also addresses teachers, emphasizing that they must inspire their students to want to articulate their thoughts clearly.

I think he’s trying to get people to stop hiding in the crowd by not thinking critically. He calls for people to learn to think critically and for people to be taught how to think critically in school. Not only does he say that people must be able to think critically, but they must also be able to articulate their thoughts. People need to put their thoughts into coherent, understandable sentences. He believes teachers need to do something about it and help students articulate their thoughts clearly.

His idea is that “thinking” is a loosely used term. People often use the word thinking to describe “worrying, remembering, or daydreaming.” He argues that thinking is not the same. He believes that the only reason our society values literacy is because the masses are literate and in life it is necessary to have a general understanding of what is going on around us. He defines thinking as “the practice of articulating ideas… in the right words”. He says that although everyone has thoughts, they acquire no meaning or appreciation until they can be clearly defined in words.

Frye believes teachers have to overcome a lot in order to teach their students how to articulate their ideas clearly. “Teachers are not only confronted with a mass of misunderstandings and untested assumptions. You must wage a struggle to help the student confront and reject the verbal formulas and standard responses to accept passive acceptance into active, constructive power.” He says it will be a struggle for students and people in general to do so to think critically and articulate their thoughts clearly, as there are many misunderstandings about literacy in our society. This is something that must be overcome in order to improve our society.

I think Frye conveyed his ideas well. I think it’s true that people are often unable to articulate their thoughts clearly. I find that our society often doesn’t value the thoughts of those who can articulate their ideas. Frye is right when he says these people become targets. Our society and possibly the media just want everyone to go with the flow and fit in. However, it is those who are able to articulate their ideas clearly that improve society.

Entry #6 Persuasion – “Don’t You Think It Is Time To Start Thinking”

Don’t you think it’s time to start thinking?

By: Northrop Frye

What an interesting analysis of the word “thinking”. Looking back at my own life, I’m just as guilty of misusing the word as the rest of society. Frye has taken an interesting approach to this analysis. He criticizes our society when he says that we have very little interest in literacy. It is true that “we are taught to read so we can pay attention to road signs, and to code so we can figure out our income taxes,” but I don’t agree that those are the only reasons. I believe that, particularly in North America, a growing proportion of our society is literate and has a genuine interest in literacy.

I agree with Frye when he says that many people believe that “reading and writing are basic skills that [are] mastered in childhood”. As a society, we seem to have a preconceived notion that everyone should be able to read and write and that those skills should just come naturally. Many people believe that they “can think that [they] have ideas, and if [they] are only given the opportunity to express them, [they] will be fine.” Unfortunately, Frye is right when he says this isn’t true! There is a significant portion of the population who cannot read and write, which is a given for students like me.

As a society, we seem confused as to what our minds are actually doing. We claim so often that when, as Frye puts it, we’re really “worrying, remembering, or daydreaming,” we’re thinking. We either don’t want to acknowledge the specific job of our brain, or we’ve gotten so used to just claiming that we “think” that we’ve forgotten what thinking actually entails. As children we were always told to think before we do anything, including speaking and writing. At school we are told to think about a question before we answer it. We’ve always been told to think, but has anyone ever explained that thinking is really part of it? According to Frye, “The operation of thinking is the practice of articulating ideas until they find the right words.” Frye seems to think that phrases like “it’s on the tip of my tongue” cannot exist because he believes that “there is no inarticulate idea waiting to be wrapped with the right words”. Frye believes that there are very few people who can articulate well and that the majority of us “say as little as possible and only use stereotyped expressions” to blend in with our surroundings.

“Don’t You Think It’s Time to Think” by Northrop Frye is generally a well-written essay. The vocabulary used is obviously designed to appeal to those with a higher level of articulation, which his essay says is a small segment of the population. However, given the subject of the essay and its audience, it was appropriate vocabulary. His writing was concise yet interesting with his use of similes, e.g. B. when he compares the existence of ideas to knowing “if you are pregnant or just gassy”. Overall, I enjoyed reading this essay, but Frye couldn’t fully convince me to agree with him.
