Happiness is probably the most common desire we all have. And people try everything to achieve it.
But eventually they realize it’s not a destination, you don’t have to own anything special to get it. It’s your right, your choice.
Happiness is right here, right now. You just have to eliminate all the things that are getting in his way – negativism, expectations, worries about the future and regrets for the past, countless desires, judgments, comparisons, trying to control things, etc.
So here are 5 simple things happy people do (and the things they don’t do) that can change the way you look at things and your life:
1. Thu: Live in the present moment.
This moment is the only place where you can feel alive, make changes, shape your future, learn and grow, enjoy and appreciate.
Happiness is there too. Not later, not in past memories, right here and now.
Don’t: Dwell on the past or worry about what might happen tomorrow.
Both are pointless and harmful.
When we reflect on what was and relive the pain, we suffer. The same goes for constantly trying to predict, control, and change the future so that it can match our expectations of how things should be.
And that’s why we live in such disappointment and not satisfied with our lives.
2. Do: let go.
Letting go means accepting, being okay with things and events, letting them be and moving on without carrying a burden until the next moment.
Only then will you embrace freedom, joy and contentment.
Don’t: Hold onto things.
We become too attached to people, objects, bad habits, places, and so on. We think about them too much, worry, want to be with that person in that place or else all the time.
This is not the way we can improve, grow spiritually, and succeed in life. Because there’s always this thing that we come back to. And progress cannot be made by staying in one place.
Letting go is the answer. Being free from attachments and experiencing the present moment is our desired state.
3. Do: Spend time with happy people.
Happiness can be spread and shared, and being around positive people who appreciate everything they have, know how to enjoy life, smile all the time and have fun will make you one of them.
Don’t: Be with the wrong people for too long.
Some are just toxic – I mean the negative ones who always want to take and never give, who talk about other people and events with jealousy and hatred instead of discussing ideas.
They say we’re the average of the 3-5 people we spend the most time with. And if you find happy people and surround yourself with them every day, you will be happy with life too.
4. Do: what you love.
Find your passion and follow it.
It’s one of those things that can give meaning to your life.
Don’t: Do things you hate.
The average person has a 9-5 job they hate, works for someone else, is surrounded by co-workers they don’t like, doesn’t have the time (or inclination) to do things they enjoy or new things to try and exciting things.
In his daily routine there are no hobbies, no time to rest.
Living like this leads to misery.
5. Do: Accept.
Acceptance is the act of seeing things as they are and being okay with them. It means accepting yourself for who you are and the people around you, the turn of events and everything else.

These are two of the things that often lead to progress but rarely to happiness.
Our constant need to be in control of everything in our lives and to change people means we don’t like what is now. We put too much pressure when we try to “fix” it, interfering with the natural flow of events. But that never works and in the end we are disappointed, upset and without hope.

This is great news for all of us, but especially for people who are struggling to overcome (or recover from) stressors. At this moment in history, we are collectively experiencing some BIG sources of stress: global pandemics, racial injustice, riots and looting, plus the countless small stressors in our lives: traffic, passive-aggressive employees, lost keys, crying babies, and so on.
Over the past 50 years, study after study has shown that happiness can be largely controlled by the choices we make in our lives. according to dr Katherine Nelson-Coffey, author of “The Power of Happiness in Positive Psychology 101,” a person’s basic happiness quotient is 40% genetic and 10% dependent on whether our basic needs (shelter, food, security, etc.) are fulfilled.
The other 50% of our happiness quotient — the biggest part of what makes us happy — is our mindset.*
So how do we make ourselves happier?
Lucky Don’ts:
1. Perfectionism: When we strive to meet intangible goals and unreasonable expectations, we prepare ourselves for disappointment and dissatisfaction. Instead, set sensible, achievable goals, set healthy boundaries, and review expectations of yourself and others (including your kids, co-workers, friends, etc.).
2. Social Comparison: Measuring our social and personal worth by comparing ourselves to others is a recipe for disaster. While it is healthy to admire qualities or talents in others, comparison should be limited to self-evaluation. In other words, we should only compare ourselves to what we were in the past.
3. Materialism: I’ll be the first to admit it – I LOVE shopping. I’ve even been known to refer to Target as “my happy place.” And while we feel good right now when we fill our carts with delightful finds, associating happiness with external things is dangerous. The “high” of a material new acquisition is fleeting: items break or get lost, financial situations change, the shopper’s high wears off, and our happiness dwindles.
4. Maximize: Bigger isn’t always better. Constantly looking for better options and wanting new, bigger things is a one-way street to misery. Instead of looking for upgrades at every turn, focus on being present and finding gratitude in small moments.
5. Waiting: Many people associate their potential happiness with a future event. How many times have you thought, “I’ll be happy when I get (fill in the blank)?” Don’t wait to be happy. Life is short. Think of things you are grateful for and be happy today.

1. Altruism: The vast majority of “happiness experts” (yes, it’s a thing) agree that the best way to increase our own happiness is to help others. While this advice may sound contradictory, it actually makes perfect sense. Helping others makes us feel good, reminds us of the blessings in our own lives, and increases our capacity for compassion, which in turn increases our happiness. Even though we cannot control receiving, we can control giving. And this control – real or imagined – makes us happy.
2. Pursue Goals, Not Dreams: In order to increase our happiness, we must set tangible, achievable goals. That doesn’t mean you can’t dream of big, long-term goals; However, such goals should be broken down into small steps, and the completion of each step should be celebrated (because celebration makes us happier).
3. Know (and practice) your strengths: Assess your strengths and find new ways to use them. You may not always like everything that needs to be done, but you can use your strengths to tackle the difficult things. Consider outsourcing at least some of the tasks you don’t enjoy doing or are not good at, and find more ways to use your strengths because being strong and useful feels fabulous.
4. Invest in Friendships: Having genuine, personal, close friendships is guaranteed to make you happier. While casual acquaintances, online “friends,” and work colleagues are also important, these relationships don’t generate the same level of well-being as your true friends. Cultivate your true friendships and make time to get together even if it’s via video chat.
5. Count Your Blessings: Make a consistent effort to think of the good things in your life. Express your gratitude out loud, every day. Saying “thank you” often—whether to your co-workers, your partner, or the lady at the grocery checkout—will make others feel good, strengthen your relationships, and increase your happiness quotient.
6. Practice: Even those genetically predisposed to despair can gradually become happier with practice. Use the suggestions above as a guide and try to do at least one thing a day to increase your happiness.
Studies have proven that happiness and resilience are closely related. Happy people believe they have the tools and courage to overcome difficulties in life (AKA: resilience), and resilience increases subjective well-being (AKA: happiness).
