Army military support

With the US military’s extensive overseas exposure, there is a clear demand for skilled jobs in all four branches of the military, particularly welders.

Pipeline Welder (Highly Qualified Welders)

Oil, gas, water and other pipelines are the lifeblood of our infrastructure. Pipe welders will always be in high demand as long as the demand for fuel and other resources is high.

When welders don’t properly protect their eyes from the arc, they commonly suffer welder’s flash, or photokeratitis, a condition caused by exposure to intense ultraviolet radiation resulting in temporary blindness and extreme discomfort. More extreme eye injuries can result in permanent blindness.

Welding is a full-time occupation for nearly 400,000 Americans, and many more perform welding-related work part-time or occasionally.1 In fact, more than 100 different welding, cutting, soldering, and brazing processes are performed broadly every day across a variety of industries, by Manufacturing and construction to oil and gas and more. Regardless of the industry, welders face a number of inherent occupational hazards: exposure to harmful radiation, fumes and gases; thermal burns; and airborne slag chips, abrasive fragments and debris.

Given the hazards, it is not surprising that welder injuries outnumber other professions: in 2014, the number of injuries requiring work stoppages totaled 5,720.2 Almost 2,000 of these were eye injuries. When welders do not properly protect their eyes from the arc, they often suffer from weld flash or photokeratitis, a condition caused by exposure to intense ultraviolet radiation that results in temporary blindness and extreme discomfort. More extreme eye injuries can lead to permanent blindness.

Sweat-related injuries are costly to employers, who face medical costs, legal fees, worker compensation claims, and reduced productivity—and often more so for the affected workers, who may suffer short-term or permanent vision loss, disability, and reduced quality of life.

The good news is that many sweat-related injuries are preventable with the right protection. Today’s welding helmets offer wearers more ways to achieve the safety, comfort, and visibility they need to deliver consistent, high-quality results. This article provides tips on choosing effective welding helmets to protect welders of all ages and at every stage of their career.

A welding helmet is the worker’s first line of defense against hazards, and the protection it offers is twofold. The helmet acts as a barrier protecting the eyes, face, head and neck from intense infrared radiation (heat); flying debris, weld spatter and slag; and sparks and flames. The housing should be made of high quality, durable materials that deflect sparks well and reduce the risk of burnout for the specific application.

The helmet’s lens – either passive or auto-darkening – filters out dangerous ultraviolet and infrared radiation. The appropriate lens hood is determined based on the types of materials being welded, the welding process being used and the amps being used. Be sure to consult a shade selection chart to confirm that the helmet lens will protect at a level equivalent to the arc radiation generated by the application.

It is also important to note that welding helmets are considered secondary protection. Because they can be raised or removed between welds, ANSI-rated goggles are always required as the primary protection under a welding helmet to reduce the risk of an impact.

Comfort and balance support safety

Once the basic requirements for shock and radiation protection are met, you should consider the importance of the comfort and balance of the welding helmet. Together, these factors play a leading role in supporting compliance, security, and productivity. When a helmet doesn’t fit snugly, it can lead to muscle strain and discomfort, ultimately resulting in having to remove the helmet to make adjustments.

To promote long-lasting comfort, look for high-quality suspensions made from soft, pliable materials that comfortably conform to the head. Avoid rigid plastic hangers which tend to leave gaps if not overtightened, leading to pinch points and headaches.

And if the helmet doesn’t fit securely, it can slip on impact. To ensure a secure fit for each individual, look for suspensions with multiple adjustment points. Use a floating ratchet that prevents head pinching or crushing when tightening. By allowing workers to adjust crown height and easily make adjustments even while wearing gloves, workers quickly achieve a comfortable, customized fit.

Combination wear considerations

Another factor in achieving a reliable balance is the interaction of the helmet with other forms of personal protective equipment (PPE). Welding helmets are commonly worn with hard hats, respirators and hearing protection, and any additional piece of equipment can affect the balance of the helmet. A well-fitting welding helmet provides a reliable foundation for other types of PPE, while conversely the properties of an ill-fitting helmet are degraded by the addition of PPE.

Pairing helmets with hard hats is common, and many attachment systems are available to attach the two. If helmet changes are frequent, look for an easy-to-use, fully adjustable attachment system that fits any type of hard hat and features a brim-tab design that keeps the welding helmet securely on the hard hat. For long-term safe situations, look for attachment components that are pre-installed and permanently attached to the hard hat for ease of use.

Optical clarity and lens magnification

Welding is detail-oriented work and a clear, unobstructed view is required to ensure clean and accurate welds. Make sure the helmet you choose has a high quality lens that is free from distortion. This is particularly important with auto-darkening filter (ADF) lenses, which are made up of many layers; The larger the window, the greater the likelihood of distortion. To ensure product and service quality, look for ADF helmets with a minimum two-year warranty.

An aging workforce, who are more likely to need vision correction, can benefit from the optical clarity achieved with magnifying lenses. Also known as “Cheater Lenses,” these inserts provide workers with a sharp, narrow view of the area being welded, directly aiding quality and productivity.

Watch out for new devices for excellence

Finally, consider the age of the welding helmets used. While a helmet bought 20 years ago can still meet safety requirements today, workers who rely on outdated gear are at a disadvantage when it comes to overall performance. Recent advances like lighter materials and slim shell designs reduce weight and bulk, while innovations in suspension significantly improve comfort and fit.

New designs also allow for improved combination wear, increased stability and improved interaction with other PPE.

And a general warning to younger welders: be sure to choose a welding helmet based on looks alone. While a helmet with flashy graphics may look appealing, remember that its primary purpose is to protect against serious hazards and enable quality work. Career starters can make a positive impression by choosing a welding helmet that has a reputation for safety and durability, rather than one that just looks good.

Welders face a variety of hazards and welding helmets are their first line of defense against burns, impact and eye injuries. Today’s welding helmets offer new designs and features that improve safety, comfort, optical clarity and overall performance, allowing workers to focus on delivering reliable welds instead of making adjustments to poorly designed PPE. Does welding melt metal?

As opposed to brazing and soldering, which do not melt the base metal, welding is a high heat process which melts the base material. Typically with the addition of a filler material.

Joining metals

Unlike brazing and soldering, which do not melt the base metal, welding is a high-temperature process that melts the base material. Typically with the addition of a filler.

High temperature heat causes a weld pool of molten material that cools to form the joint, which can be stronger than the base metal. Pressure can also be used to create a weld, either alongside heat or alone.

A shielding gas can also be used to protect the molten metals and filler metals from contamination or oxidation.

Plastic welding also uses heat to join the materials (although solvent welding does not) and it is done in three stages.

First the surfaces are prepared before heat and pressure are applied and finally the materials are allowed to cool to create a fusion. Depending on the process used, joining processes for plastics can be divided into external or internal heating processes.

Wood welding uses heat generated by friction to join the materials. The materials to be joined are subjected to high pressure before a linear frictional motion generates heat to bond the workpieces together.

This is a quick process that can join wood without glues or nails in seconds.

A joint between the ends or edges of two parts that form an angle of 135° to 180° inclusive at the joint.

T joint

A joint between the end or edge of one part and the face of the other part, where the parts form an angle of more than 5° and up to and including 90° at the joint.

corner joint

A joint between the ends or edges of two parts that forms an angle greater than 30° but less than 135° at the joint.

edge joint

A joint between the edges of two parts that form an angle of 0 to 30° inclusive at the joint.

universal joint

A joint in which two flat plates or two bars are welded perpendicularly and on the same axis to another flat plate.

lap joint

A joint between two overlapping parts that form an angle of 0–5° inclusive at the weld or welds.

Welds based on configuration

slit seam

Joint between two overlapping members made by applying a fillet weld around the perimeter of a hole in one member to join it to the surface of the other member exposed through the hole.

Weld made by filling a hole in a component of a workpiece with filler metal to join it to the surface of an overlapping component exposed through the hole (the hole can be circular or oval).

Based on penetration

Full penetration welds

Welded joint in which the weld metal fully penetrates the joint and has full root attachment. In the US, the preferred term is Complete Joint Penetration Weld (CJP, see AWS D1.1).

Partially welded seams

Weld where the melt penetration is intentionally less than the full penetration. In the US, the preferred term is Partial Joint Penetration Weld (PJP).

Excess weld metal

Weld metal lying outside the plane connecting the toes. Other non-standard terms for this feature: gain, trapping.

Note: The term reinforcement, while commonly used, is inappropriate because excess weld metal above and above the base metal surface does not strengthen the joint.

In fact, the thickness considered in the design of a welded component is the design neck thickness, which does not include the excess weld metal.

running (passing)

The metal melted or deposited during one pass of an electrode, torch, or blast tube.

layer

Layer of weld metal consisting of one or more layers.

Different processes are determined by the energy source used, with a variety of different techniques available.

Forge welding was the only process used until the late 19th century, but later processes such as arc welding were developed. Modern methods use gas flame, electric arc, laser, electron beam, friction, and even ultrasound to join materials.

Care should be taken with these procedures as they may result in burns, electric shock, blurred vision, exposure to radiation, or inhalation of toxic welding fumes and gases.

This fusion bonding process uses a beam of high-speed electrons to join materials. The kinetic energy of the electrons is converted into heat when they hit the workpieces, fusing the materials together.

Electron beam welding (EBW) is performed in a vacuum (using a vacuum chamber) to prevent the beam from disintegrating.

There are many common uses for EBW as it can be used to join thick sections. This means it can be used in a range of industries, from aerospace to nuclear power and from automotive to rail.

laser

Used to join thermoplastics or metal parts, this process uses a laser to provide concentrated heat that is ideal for wheelbarrows, deep welds, and high joining rates. As this process is easy to automate, the high welding speed at which this process can be performed makes it perfect for high volume applications such as in the automotive industry.

Laser beam welding can be carried out in air instead of in a vacuum as with electron beam joining.

Resistance

This is a quick process commonly used in the automotive industry. This process can be divided into two types, resistance spot welding and resistance seam welding.

Spot welding uses heat given off between two electrodes, which is applied to a small area when the workpieces are clamped together.

Seam welding is similar to spot welding except that rotating wheels replace the electrodes to provide a continuous, leak-free weld.

So, here are 3 Mother’s Day sweat projects to show your mom how much all those late-night rock sessions and emergency band-aid applications mean to you.

Easy Garden Flower Welding Project:

You can’t go wrong by welding mom a simple flower to decorate her garden or front flower beds. It’s the perfect foolproof last minute Mother’s Day gift. Simply use your plasma cutter to make petals out of sheet metal, staple them together before mounting them to a piece of metal pipe about 3 to 4 feet long. Finally, add leaves as you see fit and either cover them with bright green and yellow spray paint or leave them exposed for a more rustic look.

Last minute heart sweat project

Do you want to show mom how much you love her? Check out this easy heart sweat project. One of our welders describes the process like this:

“It’s a simple little heart, but it’s the little simple things that matter the most. I made it out of horseshoes, and MIG just welded the shoes together with Miller’s power. I had to cut and grind a horseshoe to form the bottom of the heart. After that was done I ran a flap wheel all over the heart to smooth out the edges, then added some yarn and ta-da! I had a simple Mother’s Day present!”

Not so last minute rose sweat project

One of our staff went beyond the average Mother’s Day gift by taking 2 hours a day for two months to create a stunning metal rose for her mom. Check out his step-by-step guide to this welding project:

For this project you will need a MIG welder, plasma cutter, OxyFuel torch, pliers, various sizes of hammers, sheet metal for the petals and leaves, 3/4 inch round stock for the stem and protective gear, and a clear coat to finish as well as any enamel spray paint you wish to use.

They create all of the petals and leaves from individual pieces that have been hand cut with the plasma cutter. Next, heat each piece with the OxyFuel burner, then shape them by pulling with tongs and tapping with different sized hammers. Next you will create the leaves and then weld them to the base using a MIG welder. After the floral portion of the project is complete, insert the stem through and weld the pieces together. For each spike on the stem, weld a large slug of metal onto the stem, then grind it into a point. Next, weld the leaves and small twigs, then attach these to each side of your piece. The final pieces for this project are the green eaves on the bottom that hold the rose together. These are all hand cut pieces that you will need to weld to your flower and then shape to fit. Finally, use a grinder to make the leaves and stem shiny but leave the top heat treated and dark and cover with a clear coat.

The finished project shown was 37″ tall and 20″ wide from leaf to leaf and the flower itself was 17” in diameter.
