Land Rover Range Rover Evoque Trunk does not lock or open Inspection Costs

Faulty latch: the latch allows you to close your trunk. The latch in your trunk works the same way as the latch in your door or seat belt. There is a connecting unit on the trunk and frame of the car and when you close the trunk the two pieces snap together and securely close the trunk. When you open the trunk, the latch releases and allows the door to be unhinged. If this latch is damaged while the trunk is closed, it may lose its unlocking ability. This often happens when the car absorbs shock around the trunk. If your latch breaks, you won’t be able to open the trunk.

Damaged trunk cable: Some vehicles do not have a handle on the trunk and rely solely on a lever in the cab (or a button on the keys) to open it. In this case, you release the latch not by pulling a handle on the trunk, but by pulling a trigger (usually near the driver’s seat) that accesses the trunk latch via a cable. If this cable is broken, there is no connection between the trunk latch and the trunk open lever, and you cannot open the trunk.

Lock Actuator Malfunction: The lock actuator is controlling the lock on your trunk. It’s a small motor with gears that shift when you lock the trunk, preventing the latch from releasing the door. If this motor fails, the trunk latch will no longer lock or unlock.

The process of replacing Range Rover Evoque door locks

1) Remove the door card

The door card must be removed to gain access to the lock. Open the door. 4 screws need to be removed (see picture below). Please note beforehand that all screws are covered with plastic inserts that need to be removed with either a small thin screwdriver or a blade.

In the door release handle (Yellow) Under the door pull handle (Red) On the edge of the door (Blue)

After the screws are removed, the door panel must then be pryed away from the door. There is a risk of damaging the paintwork here so I would recommend using a selection of plastic pry bars.

Place a pry bar between the door panel and the metal part of the door, and then use two levers to push the door panel clips out of the door’s holes. Work your way around the edge of the door, being careful not to damage the clips. Please note that the card is removed outwards from the door itself and does not need to be swiped upwards.

2) Disconnect the cables

Once the door panel has been removed you will need to support it while you remove all the wires (see image below). This can be done with one hand if necessary and you must be careful not to break any of the connectors.

3) Remove the inner door panel

Before removing the inner part of the door panel, two cables must be disconnected, highlighted in yellow below (see image below).

Next you need to remove the 12 screws on the edge of the inner card (red).

Once removed, you’ll find that the card is held in place with a sticky seal. Again, you’ll need to use a plastic pry tool to separate the two pieces.

If it comes loose you will need to thread the door handle wire through the panel and rotate the inner door panel down.

Once that’s done, you can leave the card hanging. Be careful not to damage the exposed speaker.

4) Remove the screws from the lock

Detailed guide to replacing Range… Please enable JavaScript Detailed guide to replacing Range Rover Evoque door lock mechanisms

Before removing the screws, reach inside the door and disconnect the power connector from the lock.

Next, look at the end of the door. There are 3 screws where the locking mechanism sits. Remove all 3 of these so the lock just hangs on the internal wires.

5) Disconnect the cables and remove the lock

Depending on which door you’re working on, there are two or three wires to disconnect:

The inner door handle cable The outer door handle cable The manual key operation cable (My test was on the passenger door)

Removing the cables is a very complicated job and difficult to explain. I would recommend using a flashlight in the door to carefully check how the wires are attached so you can safely remove and reattach the wires to the new lock. The cables need to be properly aligned to be disconnected and reconnected, so please don’t hesitate to take your time.

6) Reattach the new locking mechanism

Next, just repeat the process in reverse order. I would recommend reconnecting the door entry wires first before reattaching the lock to the door as this is much easier to deal with.

7) Testing the new lock

After assembling, before closing the door, please make sure the lock is unlocked, otherwise you risk damaging the lock or the door.

Check if it locks, blocks, and unlocks without any issues.

Finally, check all disconnected switching devices (power windows, mirrors, lights and speakers, etc.).

car door locking mechanism

When your car’s door doesn’t close or latch properly, the locking mechanism is often the first culprit. You can find the latch in your car’s door assembly. When it’s there, it can more easily attack at an anchor point, often referred to as a firing pin. You will find this anchor or firing pin attached to the main body of the vehicle. When you slam the door, this deadbolt closes and latches around the anchor or hasp. This keeps your door locked and secure. Only the door handles have to be operated to open it. So this is how you operate the latch.
