Space X marked a new era of space exploration with the launch of two astronauts to the International space station. While exciting, they are not actually going anywhere new.
When it comes to space, your choice of destinations is limited to low earth orbit or to the ISS. That is all about to change with the rise of private enterprise spirit taking on the final frontier.
Everything from space hotels, private deep space journeys and even moon landings are on the horizon, so strap in and plan your space vacation
For nearly twenty years, if you have enough money, you could have bought a week ticket to the international space station. While it is technically a tourism experience, it is well outside the reach of the common person, and you are heading to an active research laboratory.
The first space tourism specifications began back in 2011 with Russian firm Orbital Technologies they envisioned a seven room space lodge that could be open by 2016. It would have replicated the experience of what it is like to go the ISS.
Orion Span, a US startup has plans for a space hotel dubbed the Aurora Space Station. This station has enough room for six passengers, staying for 12 days at 9.6 million each. The station will provide enough room like being onboard a private jet, visitors are expected to do three months of training before launch and will help out with tasks onboard. Thanks to the low orbit, passengers will see 16 sunrises and sunsets per day, and will have to use pods to get to sleep. The company has also said that highspeed internet is a necessity for the project (so you can expect some tiktoks and Instagram stories from orbit).
The company has already sold out the first four months of stays on board, each paying $80,000 US for a reservation.
Next up we have Bungalow airspace. They developed the concept of expanding modules that inflate in space, and thus take up little room on a rocket but become much bigger once in orbit. A single Bungalow 330 has 330 cubic meters (11,600 cubic feet) of volume, which in realistic terms is the same as a small threestory tower.
The company intends to build a single B330 prototype and attach it to the ISS, before allowing four tourists to checkin for two months at $52 million each.
But what about a completely private station? With with Space X now offering plentiful and cheap launches, Bungalow is now set to build its first space station by the end of 2021, and potentially move it to low lunar orbit over the moon by 2024.
More ambitious is the Gateway Foundation announced plans to open the Von Braun Space Station, a wheelshaped, rotating space hotel, to tourists by 2025. The ring of the station would be made up of 24 modules like Bungalow, with a certrial docking axis for spacecraft. the rotation would have gravity force of 1/6th of earths, so while not very strong, enough to have a sense of normality. Although in the zero g sections, games could be played.
They claim the station could see up to 100 tourists a week, and will be able to hold 450 passengers at once.
MIT students have come up with an idea called the Managed, Reconfigurable, Inspace Nodal Assembly (MARINA). This structure would be split between a hotel and a space station, launching in 2025, it slowly building up modules until 2038 when it could be hired by NASA as a spacecraft to Mars.
By using private investment to slowly build up the station, eventually, it will fit the mission parameters of NASA’s Mars mission and will be leased to them for 10 years.
One final crazy idea that may have been put on the back burner comes from the 2015. The Golden Spike Company, named after the first railway sike laid on the US railroad, planned tourism moon landings. Each landing was to cost around $750 million US and would have had customers from 1520 different earth nations.
When NASA heard of this idea, they said that
\”Golden Spike’s plans rank among the most audacious privately funded space exploration missions ever proposed.\” in rebuttal, the golden spike company said, \”If NASA wants a ride, we’d be glad to put them on our railroad\”.
Alas, despite facing a price of around $8 billion for the whole venture and robotic launches set for 2020, nothing came to pass. The firm turned to indigo to begin its intial funding but only raised $19,450 of its $240,000 goal.
All these ideas are just the beginning, from this century, we expect to see more options when it comes to destinations, launch sides and spacecraft. The eventual result will be a spacecraft so big that entire populations can permanently inhabit.
