Thailand Lantern Festival 2019 Loy Krathong Yi Peng.
In 2019, Loy Krathong falls on Wednesday, November 13 (festival begins on November 11, ends on November 13). It is a light festival (or known as Thailand Lantern Festival) in Thailand on the full moon day in November. The festival is celebrated nationwide by releasing lotus shaped baskets, decorated with candles and flowers onto the rivers. Chiang Mai, Sukhothai and Bangkok are the best places to celebrate the festival while visiting the country. Planning your trip to Thailand well will have more fun!
Yi Peng, another light festival, is celebrated on the same day alongside Loy Krathong in Northern Thailand, especially in Chiang Mai. It is different in that lights are placed into sky lanterns. Swarms of sky lanterns, decorated with good luck wishes and prayers are released to the sky. Yi Peng usually starts 2 days earlier than Loy Krathong. In 2019, Yi Peng Festival will possibly be observed on November 11 in Maejo location (estimation, not confirmed yet until late August, 2019).

Thailand Lantern Festival 2020 | Loy Krathong \u0026 Yi Peng Lantern Festival 2020

Thailand’s Lantern Festival – a beautiful DISASTER (4K)

Once a year, thousands of people gather in Chiang Mai Thailand to experience the lantern festival known as Loy Krathong \u0026 Yi Peng. Having seen the festival highlights on Instagram, I wanted to see if it lived up to the hype and the truth was shocking. This trip was all filmed on the Nikon Z 6. It was my first time using this camera and it really impressed me on all fronts. From photography to film, this is one of the most powerful cameras for the money and you can learn more about the Z 6 here: https://bit.ly/37dxBNR
Next month I will post a deep dive review after using the Z6 over the past month. Thanks to Nikon for sponsoring today’s video. Check them out @NikonUSA

Thai Lantern Festival

THAILAND LANTERN FESTIVAL | Yi Peng Lantern Festival in Chiang Mai Thailand

This was the beautiful Thailand Lantern Festival that happens once a year and we can honestly say it was the most magical event we have ever experienced! Instagram photos and Youtube videos do not do it justice. Watching 5000 sky lanterns float into the night sky was beyond words it is definitely an event you have to add to your travel bucket list!
This event is commonly referred to as the asian lantern festival or the Disney Tangled lantern scene. However, it is culturally known as the Yi Peng Lantern Festival in Chiang Mai Thailand (sometimes spelled Yee Peng). It usually takes place between late October to November on the full moon in Northern Thailand, specifically in Chiang Mai. Yi Peng is celebrated during the same time as the Loy Krathong festival but, they are two separate Thailand events. To put it simply, Loy Krathong is where they float lanterns on the river and Yi Peng is where sky lanterns are released into the night sky.
We planned our trip to Thailand around this event and the experience was everything we imagined, if not more! This mass lantern release was a paid event held at the Chiang Mai CAD Khomloy Sky Lantern Festival which was hosted by the Chiang Mai Culture Art and Design organization. We highly recommend going here as it includes unlimited traditional Thai food, Muay Thai fighting, a Buddhist Monk ceremony, Thai dance performance, rituals and the mass sky lantern release.
Yi Peng can also be celebrated for free all over the Old City of Chiang Mai for a beautiful authentic Thai experience but you will not be able to observe a mass release there. Instead, floating lanterns are released more sporadically. To experience a mass lantern release we highly recommend you purchase your tickets to one of the mass lantern festivals in Chiang Mai Thailand as you will not be disappointed. This event was super romantic and gave us all the feels. It made us emotional and created memories that will last forever those who have been there can probably relate =P
If you have any questions about the festival, please leave us a comment and we will be happy to answer! Thanks so much for watching and we hope you add this event to your bucket list! ♡

Thailand Loy Krathong Lantern Festival Story And How People Celebrate It

Loy Krathong, Thailand’s floating lantern festival, is an amazing festival of which the celebration includes a ritual where floating lanterns with lit candles are released on rivers and lakes across Thailand. In Chiang Mai, Loy Krathong takes place on the same day as Yi Peng Festival where flying lanterns are released into the sky. These two events attract millions of travelers every year.
Loy Krathong festival takes place on the night of the 12th full moon of the Thai lunar calendar, which usually falls in midNovember. In 2019, Loy Krathong Festival will take place on November 11th.

The word “Loy” in Thai means “to float” and a “Krathong” is a lotusshaped boat made from banana tree leaves and bark. So in Thai, Loy Krathong Festival literally means “to float a lotusshaped boat”.
So how did Loy krathong begin? A popular story about the holiday goes like this:
In the ancient Sukhothai kingdom around the year 800, King Ram Kamphaeng took an extravagant cruise on the river to celebrate the full moon of the 12th lunar month.
During the cruise, the King’s favorite mistress, Nophamas, created the first krathong which was an eyecatching lotusshaped boat made from banana leaves with a small lit candle placed in the center. Nophamas then took the krathong and set it on the water to float away and honor Buddha and the Thai water goddess.
Onlookers were inspired by Nophamas’s actions and decided to follow her lead and create their own krathongs. Soon, the river was full of bouncing lotus lanterns that flickered under the full moon.
The King was very pleased and decreed that the holiday should be celebrated every year in the same way. Thus the tradition of the floating lantern festival——Loy Krathong began.
Today, Loy Krathong is celebrated all across Thailand. The celebration typically includes firework shows, parades, carnival festivities, and releasing delicate handmade Krathongs.
If you are interested in experiencing Loy krathong Festival in Thailand, then there is nowhere better than Chiang Mai! Chiang Mai is a special place to be during this holiday because the city not only celebrates Loy Krathong but also Yi Peng the sky lantern festival as well!
