Winners of Hyundai Blue Prize Art+Tech 2022
Hyundai Motorstudio Beijing announced two winning exhibitions of Hyundai Blue Prize Art+Tech 2022: Xin Bi’s Time After Time: The Polychronicity in Blockchain and Diane Xing’s Balcony for the Brave-Nutrition, materials, and future ecology, which will be presented at Hyundai Motorstudio Beijing in 2022. The two winners were selected by art and tech experts, media professionals, and public votes among the six shortlisted candidates.
Established in 2017 by Hyundai Motor, Hyundai Blue Prize Art+Tech is an annual award program to inspire the creativity of emerging Chinese curators in art and technology. Each year, it launches the year’s theme which reflects different aspects of Hyundai’s long-term vision. The theme of Hyundai Blue Prize 2022 is “Disruptive Futures,” which was chosen to encourage people to pause and critically reflect on the type of future we want to create for humanity at a time of rapid and unexpected changes.
Xin Bi is a curator, researcher, and translator based in Shanghai. Her curation, Time After Time: The Polychronicity in Blockchain, provides a critical and philosophical examination on the blockchain technology in her selection of works. The exhibition reconsiders the forks of time and the poetry of technology, through three parallel networks of time—Chimera, Energy, and Spime. “Chimera Time (Algorithm – Time)” explores the probabilistic nature of time in the context of technology itself. “Energy Time (Ecology – Time)” sorts out the circular chain of temporality capital-consensus mechanism-computing power-natural resources-technology-time. “Spime (Social Connection – Time)” merges time and space into one, exploring the trajectory of political, emotional, and community connection in the hybrid of space and time, and the connections and interventions between the virtual and real worlds.
Diane Xing is a researcher and a curator who discusses future life and the relationship between human and nature through everyday life materials that are familiar to the audience. In her exhibition, Balcony for the Brave-Nutrition, materials, and future ecology, she gives special meaning to balconies, as a space that connects an individual to the society and links urban life and nature. The exhibition takes an imaginary “Future Balcony” as a blueprint for the landscape of post-human life, with artists acting as “nutrition converters,” “material makers,” “garden planters,” and “stargazers.” Through carefully selected artworks that uses ecological materials and recyclable items, she communicates one of the main themes in the exhibition, sustainability, creatively.
“Through Hyundai Blue Prize Art+Tech, we want to foster a new generation of creative curators and provide a global platform for them to demonstrate their exceptional insights and curatorial abilities” said DooEun Choi, Art Director at Hyundai Motor. “These emerging curators share our belief that the value of art and technology lies in its potential to shape and enhance our lives. We will continue to raise important issues about the interplay between culture, art and technology, and spark conversations on the potential futures for humanity.” Over the entire course of the competition this year, the award program carried out a variety of activities to support the shortlisted candidates in developing their professional careers over the long-term. The contestants were connected with a broad range of leading academics as well as art-tech communities through online curatorial forums and local art institution visits. Additionally, mentorships were arranged with the national and international jury members to help further develop their capabilities and critical thinking as curators.
As the final winners of the fifth Hyundai Blue Prize Art+Tech, Xin Bi and Diane Xing gain the opportunity to curate their exhibitions at Hyundai Motorstudio Beijing with the grant of CYN 600,000 each. Furthermore, the winners will be supported in promotion of their exhibitions, as well as with extended public programs.

SEOUL, June 22, 2022 – Hyundai Motor Company announced Jimin Park as the grand winner of the Hyundai Blue Prize Design 2022 themed ‘Shelter Next.’ The theme is the reimagination of the concept of a space for relaxation and escape from mental fatigue and dearth of communication in the era of environmental issues and a global pandemic.
Launched in 2021, Hyundai Blue Prize Design is a global award program developed by Hyundai Motor under its vision of “Progress for Humanity” to foster a new generation of creative curators. The award aims to communicate with the public to increase awareness of design curation and to make a real contribution to the field of design by offering new opportunities to promising young curators. Every year, a different theme reflecting major contemporary issues is chosen and works submitted are evaluated by a panel of adjudicators. The winning exhibition engages the audience to contemplate on contemporary issues and serves as a platform for open discussion.
This year, the works submitted by all applicants were evaluated by a panel of juries which included Kyungsun Kymn, Professor of visual communication design at Seoul National University; Bora Hong, Founder of art project community at Factory2; Aric Chen, General and Artistic Director of Het Nieuwe Institut and Jochen Eisenbrand, Chief Curator of the Vitra Design Museum.
Jimin Park and her proposal titled ‘Where Is My Friend’s Home’ was selected among five talented finalists from around the world who were shortlisted earlier this year. Participating artists were tasked with the challenge of visualizing relaxation in the new era and proposing their personal interpretation of what shelter means.
Jimin Park is a graduate student majoring in industrial design at Seoul National University of Science and Technology, and a furniture designer actively working in Seoul. The title ‘Where Is My Friend’s Home’ not only means a place to stay, but also indicates that everything has the potential to be a shelter, encouraging people to find their own shelters.
Juries described that Park’s proposal displayed a deep understanding of the theme, ‘Shelter Next’, grounded on solid research and evaluated her interpretation of the theme and methods as innovative and fresh.
In addition to the cash prize worth KRW 15 million, the grand winner will also have the opportunity to participate in the Boisbuchet Workshop, a week-long program in Domaine de Boisbuchet in southwest France attended by the most inspiring architects and designers from around the world. Park’s work will also be showcased in a curated design exhibition at the Hyundai Motorstudio Busan in 2023, succeeding the exhibit “Do You Miss the Future” by the grand winner of last year’s inaugural Hyundai Blue Prize Design.
