BUT you can’t go wrong with seongbukdong’s specialty dish: spicy mackerel stew. i’m usually not a huge mackerel fan, but this stew makes me one with its big chunks of fish, tender daikon and kimchi. dented tin pots in which the stew is served sit atop almost all of the tables in this small restaurant.

미국에 온지 몇 달 지나지 않았을 때가 생각나네요. 한국에 살 때는 한식을 그리 즐겨먹던 입맛이 아니였는데도 불구하고 못먹게되니까 그리워지더라구요. 그 때 집밥 느낌의 가정식 백반을 먹을 수 있는 곳을 추천받게 되었습니다. 바로 그 곳이 엘에이 한인타운에 있는 한식전문식당 ‘성북동’입니다.

성북동은 LA 코리아타운에 있는 한국분이 하시는 식당입니다. 음식들이 대체로 평균 이상으로 맛있지만 그 중에서 고등어조림과 갈비찜이 제일 유명합니다.

하지만 입맛은 제각각이라고 짝꿍은 성북동의 김치찌개와 소불고기를 엄청 좋아합니다. 라스베이거스에 와서 살면서도 성북동의 김치찌개 맛이 가끔씩 그리운지 많이 찾습니다. 성북동 김치찌개 맛은 굉장히 쎄다고 해야할까! 일반 양념말고 웬지 다른 비법 소스를 사용할거 같은 맛입니다.

그에 비해 저는 다양하게 아무거나 잘먹는 편이라 성북동에서 유명한 갈비찜, 고등어조림은 말할 것도 없이 맛있고…된장찌개, 이면수구이, 비빔밥 등 다양하게 먹어봤는데 모두 맛있었습니다. 단 순두부 찌개는 확실히 북창동 순두부가 더 맛있습니다. 그렇다고 성북동 순두부찌게가 맛이 없는건 아니구요..북창동 순두부가 더 낫다고 생각하지만 입맛은 개인마다 조금씩 다르니까 참고만 해주세요. =)

저희는 엘에이 살 때 성북동 음식을 워낙 자주 먹었습니다. 성북동 식당의 경우 내부가 좁습니다. 테이블이 대략 9개 정도이기 때문에 식당에서 먹는 경우보다 저희는 투고를 더 선호합니다. 이번 엘에이 방문때도 전화로 주문하고 20분 정도 후에 픽업해왔습니다. 밥은 흰밥과 잡곡밥이 있어서 선택해서 먹을 수 있고, 밥을 따로 추가도 가능해서 김치찌개, 소불고기 메뉴 두 개만 주문해도 밥만 추가하면 3명이서도 충분히 먹습니다. 이번에도 역시나 짝꿍이 좋아하는 소불고기와 김치찌개입니다. ^^불고기도 맛있지만 처음 성북동에 가시는 분은 갈비찜, 고등어조림을 꼭 드셔보길 추천합니다.

성북동은 엘에이 한인타운 6가와 베렌도(Berendo)의 ‘단성사몰’ 안에 위치해 있습니다. 단성사는 한국식 실내 포장마차 같은 술집입니다. 다양한 한국식 안주(닭똥집, 김말이, 번데기탕, 떡꼬치 등..)를 맛볼 수 있는 곳이라 한인분들이 많이 찾고 요즘은 외국인들도 한인타운의 맛집들을 많이 찾고 있어서 꾸준히 인기있는 곳입니다.

미국은 주 마다 법이 다른데, 캘리포니아에서는 합법적으로 술을 판매하는 시간은 새벽 2시까지입니다. 엘에이 뿐만 아니라 캘리포니아의 식당, 술집, 마켓 등 술을 판매하는 곳이라면 합법적으로 술을 구매, 판매할 수 있는 시간이 2시까지라 보통 이런 포장마차도 2시까지만 영업을 합니다.
