Foamies. You shouldn’t need to wax a soft board, especially if they are new. I’d recommend using it first without wax and seeing how you get on, as most foamies have some sort of grip to them, and wearing boots can be enough of a help.

A good place to start is going to be 12″-24″ taller than yourself but will vary by the shape and style of surfboard. Fish- Proper fish size is typically 2-4″ shorter than your shortboard. For kids under 12, something around the 7ft mark is ideal. If they’re on the taller side, something around 6’6” or 6’2” in a fish surfboard. Why are surfboards so expensive?

Big brand names, shipping distances, and even the material used for a board design play a huge role in why surfboards can be so expensive. Whether you buy an Epoxy, Polyurethane, or wooden board, you should expect to pay for quality. If your board seems cheap, then you may want to consider looking for a better option.

Can foam boards get waterlogged?

Soft-top surfboards are perfect for learning because they’re safer than a hard fiber glass board. But just like a fiber glass board, soft tops have a foam core. If you slice or ding the board deep enough to reach the white foam core, the board may soak in water and become “water logged” and heavy if not repaired.

How do you fix a waterlogged surfboard?

Open it up and remove all damaged/loose material. Suck out as much water as you can, then store the board in a warm, dry place, ding down and forget about it for a while. Some people stuff paper towels into the damaged area to wick water out, and use a fan to accelerate the drying process.

Do surfboards sink?

If you try to stand on a surfboard without a wave (like in a swimming pool), it will sink. When this happens while you are trying to catch a wave, it can be really frustrating.

Do surfboards lose buoyancy?

As long as the surfboard is less dense than the water it’s in, the board will remain afloat. Generally speaking, modern surfboards are less dense than older versions made from denser materials, such as wood.

Care & Handling Guide

To get the most out of your new Catch Surf® board, please adhere to the following guidelines:

EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNING

When exposed to high temperatures and/or direct sunlight for extended periods of time beyond ordinary use, the board may bubble and/or fade in color. Boards are required to be stored in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight or heat. Do not leave in car for extended periods of time.

Any damage caused by excessive sunlight or heat exposure due to neglect is NOT covered under our LIMITED WARRANTY.

AVOID IMPACTS

Impacts may damage your board and any damage caused by impacts is NOT covered under our Limited Warranty.

GENERAL CARE

After every use make sure to rinse your board with fresh water to remove dirt, sand and salt residue; wipe down with a clean cloth or towel and store away from direct sunlight, in a cool, dry location. Do not use solvents or cleaners on your board.

Ensure board is rinsed with fresh water, wiped clean and dry before storing in board bag or board sock.

Due to nature of materials used in the construction of soft surfboards in general, there will be some water absorption, which is normal and not a defect. This water typically drains after each use.

Wax your board as you would any other surfboard. No basecoat needed.

When riding your board, we recommend using a surf leash and staying away from sharp reef and rocky shorelines as the skins may be compromised if impact occurs. Do not use your board in questionable conditions, shore-break, or extremely shallow conditions as this will void your warranty and may cause bodily harm.

This board is not meant for use as a lifesaving device or meant for use as a rental board/surf school board.

Following the rules of surf etiquette will also bring a long life to your new board.

TRANSPORTING

When strapping the board onto vehicle roof racks, do not cinch the straps too tight, as it may crease the rails. Use a board bag as much as possible when mounting to your vehicle.

REPAIRS

Do NOT use bodyboard repair products such as “The Blob®” or “Sponge Rez®”; as these products will damage your board and eat away the composite core.

For punctures, cuts, gashes, pealed seams, skin rips and/or de-lams use: 3M® 5200, Sikaflex® 291, Gorilla Glue® and/or hot-melt glue from glue gun. Follow manufacturer’s instructions for correct and safe use of these repair compounds.

Ensure repair area is clean and dry before attempting repairs. Allow 24 hours for repairs to cure and dry before use.

Catch Surf Surfboards [Board Range Review]

The ‘Godfather’ of the modern softboard era – Jamie O’Brien (Photo: Catch Surf)

You may have noticed that Catch Surf surfboards seem to have a HUGE variety of board models available and it’s damn right confusing. This is mainly because they have a very large number of signature editions of each model. We’re going to dig into a review of the range they have on offer looking at the key softboard models that make up their line up, to try and simplify things for you.

BEATER

The Beater Board was the original really popular board for Catch Surf Boards and people have been going crazy about them for years now. The boards are flexible in that you can ride them as a bodyboard, skimboard or surfboard with or without fins. The latest Beaters are light but with two maple-plywood stringers and dual composite core so are strong and durable. Tapered D-rails and a twin-channel crescent tail allow the board to perform well even when ridden finless. User FEEDBACK: Really fun in different sorts of waves including shore breaks

Good for kids as well as adults

People love the flexibility to use as a bodyboard or a surfboard The Beater Board comes with twin fin or single fin setup and two sizes: 54” (4’6″) x 20” x 2.5” (35 Liters) 48″ (4’0″) x 20″ x 2.5″ (31 Liters)

ODYSEA

The Odysea range makes up the majority of boards within Catch Surf Board’s lineup but is kinda hard to get your head around as there are 5 (quite different) models with a huge number of special signature editions for each model. The different signature editions for each model are on the most part not different from a technical/design point of view – just signature prints/colours (eg. Jamie O’Brien signature model, Kalani Robb signature model).

Odysea STUMP Referred to as the baby brother of the Catch Surf Log – half the size and double the fun! The board still has great float, can easily get into waves, can hold a line and turn on rail. As such it suits a wide variety of waves and conditions including pitching tubes, dumpy waves, shore breaks and sloppy average conditions up to around 4 foot. User FEEDBACK: Surfers say they love that they can rip on it in waves that usually would be restricted to longboards.

It appears to be popular with a wide variety of surfers from experienced to learners and kids, however we suggest better for intermediate to advanced due to small size

On waves any bigger than around 4 foot our reviewer says it started to slide out and surfed best between 3-4 foot Check out our hands on in-depth review of the Stump HERE. The Stump is only available in one size with thruster (tri-fin) OR quad setup: 5’0” x 21.5” x 2.5” (36L) Check ODYSEA Price & Availability in U.S.A, Canada, UK, Europe, Japan: CHECK PRICE (THRUSTER) ON AMAZON CHECK PRICE (QUAD) ON AMAZON AUSTRALIA: CHECK PRICE ON SURFSTITCH

Odysea SKIPPER The Skipper comes in two main variations being thruster (tri-fin) and quad fin setup. It is a fish shape board with good down the line speed and designed for drawn out turns. User FEEDBACK: Fun and perfect for summer

Good float and suited to wide range of surfer ability and including kids

Great in crowds and in average waves Check out our in-depth review of the Odysea Skipper HERE. Available in 3 sizes in both the thruster and quad versions: 5’6” x 21.0” x 2.875” (42 Liters) 6’0” x 21.5” x 3.0” (48 Liters) 6’6” x 22.0” x 3.125” (55 Liters) Check SKIPPER Price & Availability in U.S.A, Canada, UK, Europe, Japan: CHECK PRICE 6’0″ ON AMAZON CHECK PRICE 6’6″ ON AMAZON AUSTRALIA: CHECK PRICE ON SURFSTITCH

Odysea 54 SPECIAL This tiny board is described by Catch Surf Boards as a pint sized shred stick and the love child of the Beater, Original 54 & Odysea Stump models. Coming in at only 54 inches (4’6″) these things pack performance pushing the boundaries of what softboards can do. Comprising a concave entry and vee out the tail and a flat centre line providing good speed down the line but with rockered rails giving responsive turning. User FEEDBACK: Surfers unanimously say it is a very fun board, paddles really well and catches waves you may usually not be able to because of the volume,

Some say it is like a skateboard for the ocean!

Very good for surfing shore breaks Only available in one size: 54″ (4’6”) x 19.75” x 2.5” (32 Liters) and with tri fin setup. Check 54 SPECIAL Price & Availability in U.S.A, Canada, UK, Europe, Japan: CHECK PRICE Jamie O’Brien Pro Model on AMAZON AUSTRALIA: CHECK PRICE ON SURFSTITCH

Odysea LOG A very popular board within the Catch Surf Surfboards range is the Catch Surf Log! Designed with classic looks and with maximising wave count in mind, this board will suit any level of surfer from beginner to expert. There is wide range of lengths available in this model but all have huge volume and float, and are very strong having triple wood stringers that differentiate them from the stump, skipper and special 54. All Logs are thruster (tri fin) setup. Check out our indepth reviews of the: Catch Surf 6’0 Log & The Catch Surf Odysea Log 7’0 User FEEDBACK: Fun board for everyone including beginner and intermediate/advanced surfers.

Catch Surf Odysea Surfboard [2022 Review] A Deep Look Into It

The 54 Special boards are just one category of Odysea surfboards offered by Catch Surf. Odysea includes different soft top boards that are built for riders of all skill levels. A common misconception about soft top surfboards is that they are only for beginners. This misconception was due to the early prevalence of foam longboards in the boom of the early 2000s. Now, material technology has advanced to provide quality rides in a lightweight, soft fashion. For anyone looking for the next generation of soft top boards check out any of the Odysea style surfboards: Stump, Skipper, Log, Plank, and of course the 54 Special.

The Catch Surf Odysea 54 Special Review

Spec’s The dimensions of the 54 Special are 54” by 19.75” by 2.5”. When we say this board is small, we mean it’s tiny. Can something this small produce the speed and power you want from a traditional surfboard? The answer is absolutely yes.

Pro’s A board this size first and foremost means lightweight. Anybody can carry this from a young grommet to a full grown adult. Lightweight means easy to maneuver in the water. That means good turning, able to scale with your trick base, and you will feel empowered on the wave. Another feature of this board is that because it is a soft-top, it is a little more buoyant on the wave. This means that, despite its small size, you’ll have an easy time catching waves. Con’s However, this only applies to a small subsection of waves. Anything from 1-5 feet wave-wise and you’ll be cruising along having a great day. Around 6 feet or higher, you’ll start to notice a couple things. For one, it will start to become harder to catch waves. This is because waves of that magnitude travel extremely fast and have a lot of power behind them. It’s why big wave surfers out in Mavericks will often be on a board larger than 10 feet.

Who This Board Is Perfect For Anybody of any age who wants to have a shredstick in their arsenal that’s lightweight, easy to use, and has great maneuverability. That seems a little broad doesn’t it? Well it’s the reason we love the Odysea 54 so much. Young kids who are looking for their first short board will find this board perfect. Seasoned veterans who want to challenge themselves and try an untraditionally small board will be surprised at how addictive a board like this can be. Its great handling means unregulated fun on small to mid-size waves.

Board Breakdown Shape The board has two notable shape characteristics, apart from its size. For one, the deep concave entry allows for a dynamically fluid ride. It creates a pocket around which the water flows, assisting those hard bottom turns. The other part you’ll notice is how the tails just vees out. Both these attributes in combination allows for a quick speed upgrade while still handling turns like a champ.

Materials & Construction This is a soft board, which means it’s made out of foam. Its dual-composite core provides a stiff board beneath your feet, while also keeping the soft squish we love.

Accessories Fins This board comes with the classic tri-fin set up for great maneuverability and control. In addition, these fins are removable and can be popped out and replaced any time. This makes it great for storing; having the ability to take the fins off makes the board skinnier.

Leash There is also a leash holder in its proper place at the back of the board. Always be sure to wear a leash as it helps keep yourself from having to swim all the way back to shore when you wipe out. It also keeps others safe from any runaway boards.

Other Odysea Models As previously mentioned, there are many different boards available in the Catch Surf Odysea brand. To give you the full picture, let’s break down the other four Odysea models.

Catch Surf Odysea Skipper Review The quad-fin Odysea Skipper is a great middle of the pack board for amateurs and veterans alike. The board comes in three distinct sizes. There’s the 5’6, the 6’, and the 6’6. Each board comes with its own set of pros and cons. You can think of it in this manner: The taller the board, the easier it is to catch a wave and the more buoyant it will be. The smaller the board, the more maneuverability it will have when riding the wave.

Catch Surf Odysea Log Review The infamous Odysea Log surfboard. Coming in sizes of 6, 7, 8, or 9 feet, the Log fits riders of all sizes and skill levels. Beginners will find this board to be stable, soft, lightweight, and easy to learn on. Amateurs to pros will find this longboard to be efficient and a lot of fun. All boards come with the tri-fin set-up, slick bottom, dual composite core, and triple wood stingers.

Catch Surf Odysea Stump Review The Stump is like the Odysea Log’s little sibling. It’s a 5-foot longboard if that makes any sense. It’s built just like a longboard but it fits experienced shortboarders and groms alike. Incredibly fun for any skill level, these boards are able to generate tremendous speed while still having the lightweight experience of a short soft board. Perfect for catching barrels, cruising lanes, and beginners trying to learn.

Catch Surf Odysea Plank Review The Plank is just what it sounds like. It’s a hunk on the water. Perfect for catching any size wave. It comes in four sizes ranging from six feet to nine feet. They are all traditional single-fin boards helping to steer your board with precision. For longboards of these sizes it’s important to take into account what you’re looking for. Size will determine the ride, the maneuverability, and its buoyancy.

Incredible ride!! I was skeptical when my girlfriend first bought me this board but its size soon became its biggest asset.

So much fun, you have so much control. It’s just absolutely incredible. Been surfing a long time and this board is a treat! Izzy Lorde Catch Surf Customer

FAQ Warranty? When purchasing any valuable product, it’s always important to look through the warranty carefully. Here is Catch Surf’s warranty for their boards. Once you purchase and receive your board, be sure to thoroughly inspect for dings, dents, or cracks. Any defects or damages should be reported immediately for either a new board or a free repair. These have to be reported within the first thirty days of purchase, so this is something you definitely don’t want to lag on. Note that there is no way to get a monetary refund or to switch boards for another type once you have committed to buying one. Another consideration is that the installation of third-party fins or any initial work done on the board will cause the warranty to be voided. This is important to know because surfers will often throw on their favorite fins immediately after getting the board. This should be done once the board is properly assessed and approved.

Where To Buy? There are a number of places to purchase a 54 Special. The three most common places to purchase these boards (or any surfboard for that matter) are online, in-store, and via third-party sellers. For one, you can buy Catch Surf boards right through their website. (They accept Paypal and Amazon cash too!) They can also be easily found on Amazon. And there are Catch Surf stores in San Clemente, Malibu, and Laguna Beach. Check out these to get a good idea of the board and feel how light it is. The third option is to go through third-parties like used surfboard shops or online resales like eBay and Craigslist. There are a number of places to find these boards, the most important thing is choosing the best board for your situation.

Wave Bandit vs Odysea While both of these boards are soft top boards, the Wave Bandit and Odysea differ in their consumer market. The Wave Bandit is much more fit for the beginner crowd with its wider base and larger size. The Odysea however, while still being great for beginners is often associated with amateurs and veterans.

What Is The Max Weight For The Odysea? There is no specified maximum weight for The Odysea. However, as there are videos of Jamie O’Brien ripping on the 54 Special, we can say for sure that it fits a grown-sized man. He’s about 180 lbs according to a simple Google search, so that we can be sure of. It probably fits anyone 220 lbs or less comfortably, with some wiggle room.

What Size Waves for the 54 Special? The optimal waves for a board of this size will be anything less than 5 feet. Above this and you might find that the board cannot keep up with the strength and intensity of the waves. Below 5 feet, however, you’ll notice this board has incredible depth and maneuverability. This size of wave is great for beginners and seasoned pros as it provides good strength without being dangerous.

Final Verdict – Should You Get One? In the end, the Odysea 54 Special is just one board in a large selection of soft top boards. We believe its separation from the traditional surfboard look makes it feel like a risky purchase. But so many have been journeying to this land of short shortboards and are embracing the decision. These boards shred hard while staying incredibly lightweight and easy to use. So should you get one? We think absolutely yes. Having this in your repertoire for those perfect summer swells will be one of the best decisions you make.
