The Bumble Bee Cannot Fly

So I’ve been getting some questions as to why I have used the bumble bee in my blog title, tagline, and username. There are actually a few reasons.

1. My last name begins with the letter “B.” I call myself xohannahbeexo as a play on words, so to speak. (and xo because I love {most} people and it’s quite the universal sign of love).

2. The bumble bee itself is an inspiration just by beeing (please forgive the painfully obvious pun. I saw an opportunity, and I seized it.)

I stumbled upon this poem by A. S. Waldrop years ago, and I absolutely love it. It shows that even if you have to face the most difficult, daunting task, it will be okay. You will be okay. But it is also okay to not be okay. As long as you remember that anything is possible — even if it seems impossible at the time; even if you feel like you’re failing miserably — it will all work itself out in the end. Trust yourself. Know the good you can do for you.

“According to laws of aerodynamics, the bumble bee cannot fly;

Its body is too heavy for its wings and that’s the simple reason why.

But the bumble bee doesn’t know this fact, and so it flies anyway for all to see.

Remember this when you’re losing faith or hope — God’s proof that the impossible can be.” ~A. S. Waldrop

I found this charm this past April at an open house that the Wonderstone Gallery had (if you’re in the Scranton, PA area, I highly recommend taking a trip! They offer yoga and it’s a really zen place to be). I was in one of the darkest places of my life and seeing this charm with the poem attached really moved me. I bought it for like $2.00. Great prices too 😉

I will keep this charm and card as a constant reminder that anything is possible. You just have to believe it.

The Bumble Bee Cannot Fly

There is a poem about bumble bees that I find fascinating and inspirational (so what if some call it pseudoscience!):

The Bumble Bee Cannot Fly, A. S. Waldrop

According to laws of aerodynamics the bumble bee cannot fly;

Its body is too heavy for its wings and that’s the reason why. But the bumble bee doesn’t know this fact, and so it flies anyway for all to see.

Remember this when you’re losing faith or hope – God’s proof of what the impossible could be.

This past weekend, I went to our local holistic living studio, The Wonderstone Gallery in Dunmore, PA, and found this adorable charm:

A tag with the poem written on it came with the charm. How appropriate! I was feeling a bit lost these past few weeks, so the charm and poem were such pleasant reminders to never give up.

This is why I love bumble bees and decided to incorporate them into my brand. I hope you find this poem just as lovely as I do!

The ‘Rules’ of Mathematics

The ‘rules’ of mathematics say that bumblebees can’t fly

Their wings are just not big enough to launch them to the sky

Their bodies are too large in relation to their power

So the rule makers concluded that the bumblebee’s a liar

But bumblebees cannot do maths and thinking it looked fun

One of them just tried it, and found it could be done.

She went back to her sisters and showed what she could do

And so convincing was her tale the others tried it too.

The rule makers were very cross and showed them all the sums

That proved they couldn’t do it, ‘til the bees felt rather numb

So having thought about it carefully and considered all the facts

The bees decided they could fly, and the rule makers were prats !

©Tony Almond 1994

This poem was written by Tony Almond to explain how scientists used to think that bumblebees shouldn’t be able to fly because they were too large. He wrote it for his daughter to inspire her to do what she thought she could do, even if others said it was impossible.
