Visitors can see the scenic beauty of Seoraksan Mountain in the fast and most convenient way by using Seoraksan Cable Car. However, its service may be subject to suspension for the safety of passengers in the event of unexpected strong winds or adverse weathers. Only the return tickets are available. A discount is provided to those who have the Disabled Welfare Card Class 1 and 2 as well as National Meritorious Person Card. A 50% discount is provided to those who live in Sokcho as long as they present ID cards proving their residence in Sokcho. However, the senior citizens and groups are not eligible for discount. In order to board Cable Cars, passengers must buy tickets from the building of Seorak Cable Car and use the cable car on the platform five minutes before the boarding time. On the first floor of this building is a restaurant, on of second floor is a souvenir shop, and on the third floor is an observatory equipped with parasols and tables. Visitors can wait for cable cars coming, while using those additional facilities.
Gwongeumseong Fortress (설악산 권금성)
Explanation
Gwongeumseong Fortress is the site of a castle ruins located on Seoraksan Mountain, and it is also known as Onggeumsan Mountain Castle, or Toto Castle. It is located on the steep Dolsan Mountain of Seoraksan Sogongwon area. It is believed to have been built by the 23rd King of the Goryeo Period (918-1392), Gojong (r. 1213-1259). It is also called Gwon-Kim Castle, as there is a legend that two generals named Gwon and Kim, built the castle to avoid war.
At the left side of Sogongwon, past the Biryonggyo Bridge over the ravine, there is a path which leads to Gwongeumseong Castle, but it takes over an hour of travel through a steep, rocky path (2.5km), so cable car is used. The cable car was installed by Dr. Gi-Sup Lee in 1971 and is still used by many tourists. It runs from 07:00 to 18:00 or 18:30 p.m., departing every 7 minutes, and you can only purchase round-trip tickets at the ticket counter for that day.

Sorak Cable Car is located at Sogongwon area in Seoraksan National Park. The cable car takes you to Gwongeumseong Fortress, located about 800 meters above sea level. So taking the cable car is known as a quick & easy way to enjoy Seoraksan National Park.
When you get off the cable car, you can walk to Gwongeumseong Fortress which takes about 10~20 minutes on foot. Then, you will be able to take in the breathtaking views of East Sea, Seoraksan National Park, and Sokcho.
Please note that buying the tickets in advance online is not available. During the fall foliage period, you may have to wait 2~3 hours to get on the cable car.
*Baby strollers are not allowed in the cable car. You can keep it in the self-storage facility.
