The Basement Diaries #02 – Fruit Cake
The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth is a 2014 indie roguelike by Super Meat Boy creator Edmund McMillen and development team Nicalis. In the game, protagonist Isaac is a naked, crying child who descends into the depths of The Basement to escape his abusive mother, mutilating himself with the various items he finds and defeating foul creatures with his own tears. Each run of the game is random, from the items that appear and the bosses you fight to the layout of the floors you must navigate. Join me as I once again venture below ground and chronicle my journey floor by floor, and feel free to use the provided seed to play along (bear in mind I am using expansion content). Welcome to The Basement Diaries.
The Basement Diaries #02 – Fruit Cake
Character: Cain

BASEMENT 1
Today I’m descending into The Basement with the character Cain, who starts with the item Luck Foot. This unsurprisingly gives me a good starting boost to the luck stat, getting me more pickups and ensuring that all pills I take have either good or neutral effects. What a treat, then, when I stumble into a room and end the life of a glowing green severed head, who drops a pill and spawns a red chest with a further two pills! It’s like a fraction of Christmas as I swallow the capsules, anticipating something great like a Health Up or a Damage Up, but a rather shit Christmas it turns out to be when I unwrap a Paralysis pill, which thankfully I didn’t use when there were enemies around, and two Puberty pills, which do nothing other than add a few straggly pubes to my head.
My metaphorical Christmas is brightened up tenfold when I enter the first Treasure Room for my present and receive the messianic Dark Bum item. THERE IS A GOD AFTER ALL. Dark Bum is not only one of the best items you can get early on, but one of the best in the game, as he guzzles up any spare heart pickups you don’t need and grants you a soul heart (additional HP on top of your maximum) for every one-and-a-half he eats. I love Dark Bum.
This floor gives me no trouble with its swarms of flies and worms, but I enter the last room and face Rag Man, one of the expansion’s new bosses and arguably one of the hardest you can face on the first floor. Wrapped in his eponymous rags, Rag Man shoots very fast homing shots at you, as well as rolling his head towards you, which then grows into a spider. Wonderful imagery there. His shots are faster than I am expecting and curve round to hit me, putting me down to half a heart very early in the fight and instilling a dreadful fear in me that this post will end up being 200 words. I take my time, avoiding the three spiders he has spawned and staying far enough away to avoid his shots, briefly coming in closer to hit him with mine. Minutes later, I kill the fucker and teabag his corpse. My reward – Blood Clot, for extra damage and range – exactly what I need.
CELLAR 2
This floor I am inflicted with Curse of the Blind, meaning every item I pick up will be a surprise, hooray! In the first room I wander into, a troll bomb explodes and reveals a ladder going down to the same kind of sidescrolling dungeon I found last time, containing an item hidden to me by the curse. I tentatively pick it up – it’s Fruit Cake. Fruit Cake? I’ve never got this before. It seems every shot I fire has a different effect applied to it; one might be a boomerang shot, whereas the next might orbit around me as if I had the item Tiny Planet, or bounce off a wall like Rubber Cement. This could be interesting.
My Treasure item is Little C.H.A.D., a reference to a boss in Edmund McMillen’s previous game, Super Meat Boy, and also a boss in Isaac. The little red guy gives you a half heart every 2 rooms you complete, so more food for my lad Dark Bum!
Fruit Cake is proving a strange combination of powerful and difficult, as it’s killing enemies fast but making aiming inconsistent. The boss Little Horn is not too much of a problem, but I find it harder than usual aiming for his balls. For my boss item, I welcome the return of John Belushi’s arch nemesis, the Speed Ball, its mixture of cocaine and heroin strengthening people’s tears the world over. I play well enough for a Devil Room to open up, and it contains an unknown item I can trade for 2 of my hearts, leaving me with only half a soul heart left. It’s tempting as it could be the ridiculously powerful Brimstone laser, but I just can’t risk it.
FLOODED CAVES 1
Thanks to the magic of Fruit Cake, one of my tears decides to explode and reveals a secret room. Sadly, all it contains is a button that spawns some maggots, upon which another of my tears explodes at point blank range and hurts me. The game is having a laugh at my expense.
I find the Rosary in the treasure room, which grants me three soul hearts. These, along with Bum and C.H.A.D., mean I will soon have a lot of health, provided I don’t lose it first like a scrublord. I face a couple of rooms with many enemies, and they prove difficult to one wielding a Fruit Cake and the randomness that accompanies it, making that loss of health all the more likely.
I kill a floating hairy blood-squirting bumhole (yes, that’s a real enemy) and it drops the Second Hand trinket, which increases status effect time on enemies, making my cake the tiniest bit better. A pill I consume gives me the Hematemesis effect, which puts me down to one red heart (which is what I’m on anyway) and spawns 3 more as pickups for Bum to go to town on, granting me even more soul hearts.
The boss is Chubb, who is relatively easy, especially if you have bombs (I don’t), but the room is full of his maggot buddies and I take stupid damage from both them and my unpredictably-exploding tears, which is definitely the major drawback of the Fruit Cake. Thanks to DB I’m still ok for health, though, and I receive the item Stem Cells which gives me even more.
CAVES 2
I’m cursed with the Curse of the Maze, which annoyingly means I sometimes appear in a different room when I go through a door. A single, horrible, hellish room is filled with dodge-restricting rocks and populated by many exploding bomb flies and I find it difficult to deal with them, losing all of my soul hearts. The cake screws me over once again, blowing me up as I try to kill a spider legging it towards me. Another room, this one with red zombies and stone heads that constantly spit out shots, puts me down to half a heart, because despite nearly 150 hours playtime I still can’t keep track of multiple things at once and wander into the bullets as I evade the zombies.
This floor’s Treasure isn’t going to save me. It’s the funny but mostly useless Lemon Mishap, which has Cain piss himself and damages any enemy who steps in the small puddle. It’s no good for boss Gurdy – a big mound of fleshly bits with a face – but earlier I picked up the Tarot card The High Priestess, which causes Mom’s foot to come down and stomp the life out of the deformed mess that’s slumped before me. I receive a Dinner that increases my HP by one, but it’s not looking great.
NECROPOLIS 1
I think the nearly 50 hours I’ve spent on Fallout 4 in the last week has made me even worse at Isaac, because I lose the health I just gained from bone-throwing skeletons in a room I really should have been able to dodge them in. Depressingly, a room full of maggot men finish me off and award me with one of the most pathetic deaths I have ever had the displeasure of being dealt in this game. Barely half way through the run, I have failed once again.
Fuck you, Fruit Cake.
RESULT: FAILURE
