What is catkin_make & how do you use it?

Hello ROS Developers! In this ROS in 5 min tutorial, we’re going to see what catkin_make is, how it works, and what its advantages are.

For that, we are going to use Robot Ignite Academy.

But before we start, if you are new to ROS and want to Learn ROS fast, I recommend that you take any of the following courses in Robot Ignite Academy:

Whether you like the video or not, or if you want to learn about specific ROS subjects, please leave a comment in the comments section below, so we can interact and learn from each other.

Question: What is catkin_make

Step1. Create a project in Robot Ignite Academy(RIA)

We have the best online ROS course available in RIA. It helps you learn ROS in the easiest way without setting up ROS environment locally. The only thing you need is a browser! Create an account here and start to browse the trial course for free now!

Step2. Create a package

Almost all the package you will need is already installed in RIA. We’ll create the package in the ROS Autonomous Vehicles 101 course as an example in this video, but you can choose any course you want to do this.

Please type the following command in shell to create a new package

cd ~/catkin_ws/src catkin_create_pkg test roscpp

Step3. Compile the package with catkin_make

Now you can type catkin_make to compile the package.

cd .. catkin_make

It shows a lot of outputs, but what did it really do?

The catkin_make is actually a macro which creates directories and runs cmake command for you. If you want to do it yourself, just delete the build and devel directories first.

rm -rf build/ devel/

Now you can create a build directory and run the cmake command by yourself to get the exact same result as catkin_make did.

mkdir build&&cd build cmake /home/user/catkin_ws/src -DCATKIN_DEVEL_PREFIX=/home/user/catkin_ws/devel -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=/home/user/catkin_ws/install -G “Unix Makefiles”

Take away today- The Answer:

catkin_make is a macro which creates source directories and runs the cmake commands for you. You can test out with the following step.

tools 0.0.0 documentation

In addition to the differences due to isolation, catkin build is also different from catkin_make_isolated in the following ways:

Build isolation has the following implications for both catkin_make_isolated and catkin build :

While there are many more features in catkin_tools described in the rest of the documentation, this chapter provides details on how to switch from using catkin_make and catkin_make_isolated . This chapter does not describe advanced features that catkin_tools provides over catkin_make and catkin_make_isolated . For a quick overview of what you can do with catkin build , see the Cheat Sheet .

Unlike catkin_make , the catkin command-line tool is not just a thin wrapper around a the cmake and make commands. The catkin build command builds each package in a workspace’s source space in isolation in order to prevent build-time cross-talk. As such, in its simplest use, catkin build behaves similarly to a parallelized version of catkin_make_isolated .

Most problems users will encounter when migrating from catkin_make to catkin build are due to hidden bugs in packages which previously relied on side-effects from their dependencies to build. The best way to debug these problems before switching to the entirely new tool, is to use catkin_make_isolated first. Note that all three of these tools can share source spaces, but they must use their own build, devel, and install spaces.

1. Verify that your packages already build with catkin_make :¶ To make iterating easier, use catkin_make with build and devel spaces with the suffix _cm so that they do not collide with the other build tools: cd /path/to/ws catkin_make –build build_cm –cmake-args -DCATKIN_DEVEL_PREFIX = devel_cm -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX = install_cm [ CMAKE_ARGS… ] –make-args [ MAKE_ARGS… ] If your packages build and other appropriate tests pass, continue to the next step.

2. Verify that your packages build in isolation:¶ Use catkin_make_isolated with build and devel spaces with the suffix _cmi , and make sure your packages build in isolation. This is where you are most likely to discover bugs in your packages’ CMakeLists.txt files. Fix each problem, using the troubleshooting advice later in this chapter. cd /path/to/ws catkin_make_isolated –build build_cmi –devel devel_cmi –merge –cmake-args [ CMAKE_ARGS… ] –make-args [ MAKE_ARGS… ] Once your packages build (and other appropriate tests pass), continue to the next step.

Catkin and Packages

Sometimes, ROS packages have bugs and you want to help fix them. Sometimes you need a new feature or slightly different behavior from a different package. The workspace mechanism provides a useful means of handling this case without needing to modify your base system.

Clone the repository you want to work on into the source space of a workspace. Your packages that depend on that package will now use the compiled version, not the version installed on your system. Modify the source code to suit your needs. You can now submit a patch or, if the project is on github, you can fork the main repository, push your changes to your fork, and submit a pull request.

So you have finished reading the catkin_make topic article, if you find this article useful, please share it. Thank you very much.
