Senorio de Barahonda Barrica 2011

This family company was established in 1925 and has been growing and evolving ever since, latterly passing to Antonio Candela Poveda and his two sons Antonio and Alfredo. The company began in a small bodega (cellar) which has expanded over time according to capacity and technological requirements and now boasts a second winemaking cellar. Today Bodegas Antonio Candela forms part of the family group which also encompasses Señorio de Barahonda as well as Viña de Aliagar, the company which manages the family estates.

Señorio de Barahonda is situated in the north east of the Región de Murcia in the Altiplano district. It is a transisitional zone between Spain’s central plateau and the Mediterranean, surrounded by a ring of low mountain ranges.

Yecla received its D.O. status in 1975 although 20 years prior to that certain bodega had already begun to concentrate on quality, leaving behind more robust and rustic styles to offer new, more interesting bottled reds, the majority of which fully exploit the great potential of the Monastrell grape.

Today the Yecla D.O. comprises 6500 hectares of vineyard.

Senorio de Barahonda ‘Barrica’ Monastrell

Item Description

Wine Advocate 92

“The 2011 Barrica (75% Monastrell and 25% Syrah) is the richest and densest. It offers up camphor, pepper, bouquet garni, roasted meat, black currant and earthy blue fruit. Full-bodied, chewy and mouth-filling, this is a big, well-balanced wine that represents a super value. Drink it over the next 2-4 years.” ~ RP

Barahonda Barrica is an estate-bottled wine made by Señorio de Barahonda, the oldest winery in the Yecla DO region. This wine combines the powerful Monastrell grape with the spicy, soft tannins of Syrah. The Candela family established the bodega in 1925. Winemaker Araceli Gonzalez is one of the key figures whose work has shown the potential of Monastrell in Yecla. Monastrell is better known as Mourvèdre in France’s Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation, where the terroir and climate are similar to Yecla. Both regions have a Mediterranean climate with warm days and nights. Located in the warmer southeast part of Spain, Yecla is one of the country’s oldest wine regions, with a rich history that dates back to the 6th Century. In recent years, the astounding rediscovery of Yecla by American journalists and consumers has prompted international acclaim for wines based on Monastrell. Native to Spain, Monastrell was brought to France around the 5-6th Century.

What makes this wine unique?

This wine is made from estate-owned, organically grown grapes. It combines the power of Monastrell with the spice of Syrah. The vines are head pruned in the traditional manner and are dry farmed (no irrigation). The Monastrell grapes come from vines over 60 years old. Yields are a low 2 kilograms (4.4 lbs.) of fruit per vine, which results in wines that are naturally balanced and concentrated.

Grape:

75% Monastrell, 25% Syrah. Non-certified organically grown vines planted from 1970-1980. Tended in limestone, clay and sandy soil at 713 m (2,339ft) elevation.

Pairing Suggestions:

In addition to the predictable array of roasted and grilled red meats, the ripeness of Monastrell with the spice of Syrah will make this wine pair even better with grilled or roasted pork tenderloin, pork chops and Tandoori chicken or veal. For a more unusual pairing, try this wine with the finest corned beef or pastrami-on-rye sandwich you can find and don’t forget the half-sour pickle.

Vinification and ageing:

Both Monastrell and Syrah are hand harvested and vinified separately. The Monastrell macerates for 15 days at 79ºF. The Syrah is fermented at 75ºF and macerates for 12 days. Malolactic fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks. The wine is aged in barrels for three months before the two varieties are blended together. Once the final blend (assemblage) is completed, it remains in barrels for another 6 months.

Production:

Location, Soil, Climate:

The vineyards are within the Yecla DO (Zone 8), within Murcia in southeastern Spain. The vineyards are in the Campo Arriba district of Yecla, at 713 meters (2,339 ft.) elevation. Monastrell is the most planted grape in this area and is the second most planted red grape in Spain. Yecla’s higher altitude results in cooler temperatures than neighboring regions, which makes wines that are brighter and more aromatic. The soils are composed of limestone and chalk with clay and gravel subsoils, low in organic matter. The soils are deep and have good drainage. The clay subsoil retains water, which is essential for the health of the vine in this arid climate. This results in greater overall concentration and complexity in the wine. The average temperature from May-October is 66ºF, with only 13 inches of rain per year. The climate is Mediterranean with a light Continental influence, due to its higher altitude.

Tasting notes:

It is the richest and densest. It offers up camphor, pepper, bouquet garni, roasted meat, black currant and earthy blue fruit. Full-bodied, chewy and mouth-filling, this is a big, well-balanced wine that represents a super value. Drink it over the next 2-4 years.

Expert wine ratings and wine reviews by WineAlign

Another good value from Yecla, this lush Monastrell-Syrah blend is rich and flavourful if not exactly profound. There isn’t much structure, it doesn’t hold together for long, and with a thick mouthfeel it comes across like a red-purple fruit smoothie, but the aromas and flavours of dark cherry, raspberry, blueberry, and spice, along with a certain earthiness and meatiness in the background, are certainly enticing. Comparisons to Australian Shiraz are apt, though this lacks elegance and sophistication even if it mirrors the fruit-forwardness.

All tastings reported in the Buying Guide are performed blind. Typically, products are tasted in peer-group flights of from 5-8 samples. Reviewers may know general information about a flight to provide context—vintage, variety or appellation—but never the producer or retail price of any given selection. When possible, products considered flawed or uncustomary are retasted.

REGION

The Levant refers to the eastern region of Spain that follows the Mediterranean coast. The word literally means the “east coast.” Officially there are two autonomous regions within Levant, Communidad Valenciana and Murcia. The appellations within the Levant are Alicante, Utiel-Requena, Valencia, Bullas, Jumilla and Yecla. Once an area where winemaking was strictly utilitarian and mostly done to satisfy bottlers of bulk wines, the region is today home to numerous innovative wine projects, including one by Australian winemaking star Chris Ringland. Red wines from this region are made from Monastrell, which is known in southern France as Mourvèdre. The reds of this region tend to be intensely purple/red, with black fruit flavors and strong tannins.
