Photographer son’s poignant images capturing his parents waving him away on the doorstep of their family home for years before his father’s death
The bittersweet moment of saying goodbye to loved ones has been documented by a Cleveland photographer in a new photo series which movingly captures his father’s life and death.
In 2013 Angelo Merendino started taking photographs of his parents waving goodbye on their Akron doorstep after every visit. He didn’t realize how poignant the series would become until his father died in May 2014 and his parents joint appearances on the porch slipped away to his mother’s solitary wave farewell.
His photos capture the emotional moment that most of us will experience during the holidays – the combination of happiness at our time spent with loved ones but also our reluctance to see them walk out the door.
‘As long as I can remember my parents have stood by the door and waived goodbye when I would leave. There was never an, \”I’ll just let myself out,\” it was always, \”We’ll walk you to the door,’ Merendino writes on his website.
‘I don’t remember when I realized that this goodbye wasn’t a given. One day it would be different. Since my dad’s passing a mom still comes to the door.’

A Photographer’s Parents Wave Farewell
At the end of their daughter’s visits, like countless other mothers and fathers in the suburbs, Dikeman’s parents would stand outside the house to send her off while she got in her car and drove away. One day in 1991, she thought to photograph them in this pose, moved by a mounting awareness that the peaceful years would not last forever. Dikeman’s mother wore indigo shorts and a bright pink blouse that morning; her father, in beige slacks, lingered behind her on the lawn, in the ragged shade of a maple tree. The image shows their arms rising together in a farewell wave. For more than twenty years, during every departure thereafter, Dikeman photographed her parents at the same moment, rolling down her car window and aiming her lens toward their home. Dikeman’s mother was known to scold her daughter for her incessant photography. “Oh, Deanna, put that thing away,” she’d say. Both parents followed her outdoors anyway.
Photographer’s Heartwarming Photos Capture 27-Years of Waving Goodbye to Her Parents
Over the course of 27 years, from 1991 until 2017, photographer Deanna Dikeman has a ritual. Every time she left her parent’s house in Sioux City, Iowa, she would snap a picture of her mom and dad waving goodbye from the driveway.
The resulting photo series—titled Leaving and Waving—is part family photo album, part homage to a parent’s steady affection and unwavering love.
It all began with a snapshot captured from inside her car in the year 1991 as her mother and father waved goodbye from the driveway of their new home. By then, Dikeman was already four years into chronicling the lives of her entire family, and the “leaving and waving” photos happened almost by accident.
“I never set out to make this series. I just took these photographs as a way to deal with the sadness of leaving,” says Dikeman. “These photographs are part of a larger body of work I call Relative Moments […] When I discovered the series of accumulated ‘leaving and waving’ photographs, I found a story about family, aging, and the sorrow of saying good-bye.”
In a sense, Leaving and Waving could be described as one long, extended goodbye. The sorrow that Dikeman describes weaves its way subtly throughout the series, crescendoing in two equally emotional frames. The first, captured in 2009, in which her father is no longer present; the second, the final photograph in the series, shows an empty driveway.

Leaving and Waving
Leaving and Waving
For 27 years, I took photographs as I waved good-bye and drove away from visiting my parents at their home in Sioux City, Iowa. I started in 1991 with a quick snapshot, and I continued taking photographs with each departure. I never set out to make this series. I just took these photographs as a way to deal with the sadness of leaving. It gradually turned into our good-bye ritual. And it seemed natural to keep the camera busy, because I had been taking pictures every day while I was there. These photographs are part of a larger body of work I call Relative Moments, which has chronicled the lives of my parents and other relatives since 1986. When I discovered the series of accumulated “leaving and waving” photographs, I found a story about family, aging, and the sorrow of saying good-bye. In 2009, there is a photograph where my father is no longer there. He passed away a few days after his 91st birthday. My mother continued to wave good-bye to me. Her face became more forlorn with my departures. In 2017, my mother had to move to assisted living. For a few months, I photographed the good-byes from her apartment door. In October of 2017 she passed away. When I left after her funeral, I took one more photograph, of the empty driveway. For the first time in my life, no one was waving back at me.

The New Yorker & Me: Eren Orbey’s “A Photographer’s Parents Wave Farewell”
What is The New Yorker? I know it’s a great magazine and that it’s a tremendous source of pleasure in my life. But what exactly is it? This blog’s premise is that The New Yorker is a work of art, as worthy of comment and analysis as, say, Keats’s “Ode on a Grecian Urn.” Each week I review one or more aspects of the magazine’s latest issue. I suppose it’s possible to describe and analyze an entire issue, but I prefer to keep my reviews brief, and so I usually focus on just one or two pieces, to explore in each the signature style of its author. A piece by Nick Paumgarten is not like a piece by Dana Goodyear, and neither is like a piece by Ian Frazier. One could not mistake Finnegan for Seabrook, or Bilger for Lepore, or Collins for Khatchadourian. Each has found a style, and it is that style that I respond to as I read, and want to understand and describe.
