Abaqus Unified FEA

The Abaqus/CAE Associative Interface for NX allows you to transfer parts and assemblies from NX into Abaqus/CAE using associative import. In addition to associative import, the Abaqus/CAE Associative Interface for NX includes a direct translator that writes NX parts and assemblies in Elysium Neutral (.enf_abq) File format; Elysium Neutral Files can subsequently be imported into Abaqus/CAE.

The Abaqus/CAE Associative Interface for NX also allows you to modify parameters defining NX geometry features such the radius of a hole or an extrusion length from within Abaqus/CAE. The updated parameters are propagated to both the NX model and the Abaqus/CAE model. Associative import also allows to transfer materials from NX to Abaqus/CAE.

The following import techniques are available with the Abaqus/CAE Associative Interface for NX:

In this post, we will be highlighting the installation and use of the CAD associative interface for interconnecting Solidworks with Abaqus. By using the CAD interface, geometry modifications performed with Solidworks can be transfered in the Abaqus CAE with a push of a button without the need for manually updating previously assigned boundary conditions or interactions.

Downloading and saving the CAD associative interface

The CAD interface supports interconnection of Abaqus with various CAD software such as CATIA, ProEngineer and Solidworks. For every CAD package, different associative interface files should be used. Please be aware that a dedicated License is needed for this Abaqus Associative Plugin.

In this blog the CAD software to be considered, is Solidworks 2017.

In this blog we assume that Solidworks 2017 is installed and licensed prior to installing the Associative Interface.

The necessary files for the associative interface can be downloaded from software.3ds.com , by selecting the proper Anchillary products package as shown in Figure 1 (shown for abaqus 2018 version).

When the compressed package mentioned has been downloaded and uncompressed, in a relevant directory (relating to Abaqus Associative interfaces–>Solidworks_2.1_Associative Interface) there should be a relevant dll file (Sw2AbqPlugin.dll). This file should be placed inside a directory where administrator rights are present.

Launching Solidworks and Installing the Interface

Next up, Solidworks should be launched. A file should be opened next (Open–> File) and the selection filter should be changed to Add-ins. Next, the user should navigate to the directory where the respectfull .*dll is installed and double click on it. With this action , shown in Figure 2, Solidworks will install the Associative Interface Add-in.

Next up, in Solidworks, the user should go to Tools–> Addins. If the interface installation completed succesfully, there should be an Abaqus/CAE Add in now present in the Addins List. Make sure that this is enabled. This is shown in Figure 3.

Next up, the user can launch Abaqus CAE and create a new model database.

The Assembly module should be enabled next. The user should then go to Tools–>CAD interfaces–>Solidworks and Auto assign an enable a port for communication between the two software (abaqus and solidworks) via the Associative Interface. This process is shown in Figure 4.

when the connection above is succesfully established, a relevant message will be published in the Message area of the CAE. Next, the user only has to open a solidworks file (parts and assemblies are supported for the interface) and click the Abaqus button shown in Figure 5, in order to import the geometry into CAE.

Next, the user can easily proceed with the geometry modificaitions in Solidworks and click the respectful Abaqus button, in order to update the geometry in Abaqus CAE. A relevant video of the Associative Interface in action is shown below.

Last but not least, it is mentioned that whenever the geometry is updated in Abaqus CAE (after clicking the Abaqus button in Solidworks) a relevant message is published in the message Area of Abaqus.

Installing the SOLIDWORKS Associative Interface add-in

The SOLIDWORKS Associative Interface add-in is a plug-in component for SOLIDWORKS. The add-in must be enabled after it is installed.

Before you begin:

You need administrative privileges to install the plug-in. SOLIDWORKS must be installed and licensed on your system before installing the plug-in. If you are installing the SOLIDWORKS Associative Interface on an operating system that uses User Access Control (UAC), such as Windows Vista or Windows 7, you must turn off UAC or select the least secure setting.

1. Obtain the SOLIDWORKS Associative Interface zip file from the assembly.

2. Unzip the SOLIDWORKS Associative Interface zip file and save the contents to a permanent directory; the directory must be accessible to all users of the SOLIDWORKS Associative Interface. The zip file contains the add-in .dll file.

3. Start SOLIDWORKS as a Windows. You must be part of the local administrator group to open SOLIDWORKS as an administrator.

4. Select File->Open from the main menu bar. The Open dialog box appears.

5. In the Files of type field, select Add-Ins (*.dll).

6. Navigate to the directory that contains the add-in file. Select the add-in .dll file, and click Open. SOLIDWORKS installs the SOLIDWORKS Associative Interface add-in.

Enabling the SOLIDWORKS Associative Interface add-in

The following procedure describes how to enable the SOLIDWORKS Associative Interface add-in in SOLIDWORKS after you have installed it.

1. From the SOLIDWORKS main menu, select Tools->Add-Ins. SOLIDWORKS displays the Add-Ins dialog box.

2. In the Add-Ins dialog box, the SOLIDWORKS Associative Interface add-in is listed as Abaqus/CAE

underneath the Other Add-ins heading (see Figure below).

• To enable the SOLIDWORKS Associative Interface add-in in the current SOLIDWORKS session, toggle on the check box in the Active Add-ins column.

• To enable the SOLIDWORKS Associative Interface add-in for future SOLIDWORKS sessions, toggle on the check box in the Start Up column.

Benefits: The SIMULIA Associative Interface for Abaqus/CAE allows you to easily transfer an assembly from CATIA V6 to Abaqus/CAE; you can subsequently modify the model in CATIA V6 and propagate these modifications to Abaqus/CAE without losing any analysis features assigned to the model in Abaqus/CAE.

Description: When you use the SIMULIA Associative Interface for Abaqus/CAE to transfer the geometry of a model from CATIA V6 to Abaqus/CAE, the model appears in the current Abaqus/CAE viewport, as shown in Figure 3–2.

The parts and part instances from CATIA V6 are stored in the Abaqus/CAE model database and appear in the Model Tree. You can use CATIA V6 to modify the parts or to change the position of instances in the assembly. When you subsequently import the model into Abaqus/CAE, the Abaqus/CAE model is updated to reflect the changes. In addition, associative import retains any features that you added to the model with Abaqus/CAE. Any of the features that you created in Abaqus/CAE—such as partitions, loads, boundary conditions, sets, and surfaces—are regenerated each time you import the modified model from CATIA V6.

You can also save the geometry of your CATIA V6 model in an assembly file ( .eaf ) format that you can manually import into an Abaqus/CAE assembly.
