Acne Studios recently collaborated with Liberty London to create a ready-to-wear and accessories line around paisley print and now, the brand is launching a capsule collection in celebration of Swedish artist, Hilma af Klint. Reproducing many of the abstract art pioneer’s most famous works from the early 20th century, this new line consists of t-shirts and sweatshirts for men and women, and a selection of accessories, including several scarves and shoppers. The capsule collection was authorized by the Hilma af Klint Foundation, which has delighted in the opportunity to work with Jonny Johansson, creative director of Acne Studios. Acne Studios x Hilma af Klint: Wearable Art
Acne is entering the world of wearable art, reviving the work of Hilma af Klint. The Swedish brand has interpreted the artist’s original paintings for a ready-to-wear spring/summer 2014 collection, released this month.
Jonny Johansson, founder and Creative Director of Acne, has long grown the lifestyle brand around his own interest in art, architecture, photography and contemporary culture.
Johansson, who has remained head of the firm since 1996, says: “The colors and the depth and beauty of Hilma af Klint’s universe will strike anyone who spends time with her art.”
The stand-out piece features Klint’s famous abstract oil painting The Swan printed onto a round neck sweatshirt. Other pieces include the Academy of Fine Arts graduate’s work on shirts, scarves and tote bags.
“…I feel very honored that the Hilma af Klint foundation gave me the freedom to create a small collection based on some of her most important work,” says Johansson.
Hilma af Klints work is currently on show with a touring exhibition dedicated to the artist, called A Pioneer Of Abstraction. The showcase recently reached the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Copenhagen where it will remain on display until June 9th 2014.
Most of the Hilma af Klint capsule collection is available in Acne Studio stores worldwide and on acnestudios.com now, with customers offered to join a waiting list for remaining pieces. Prices start at £150 for t-shirts, peaking at £270 for sweatshirts.

Acne Studios interprets original paintings by the once forgotten Swedish artist Hilma af Klint for their latest collaborative collection. Inspired by the new spirituality of the late 19th century, Hilma af Klint yearned to visualize a higher union “between the opposites of the polarized world,” such as male and female, light and darkness, striving for reconciliation of contradictions, for unity and totality. The collection incorporates several prints which have been scanned directly from the artist’s canvases onto a variety of styles, including button-downs, T-shirts, sweatshirts and scarves. The collection is now available exclusively at Acne Studios.
Hilma af Klint x Acne Studios — THE BRVTALIST
Leave it to Stockholm’s Acne Studios to mine a forgotten abstract art pioneer and re-interpret her works into wearable, modern fashion. Hilma af Klint was born in Sweden in 1862 and while forgotten for generations, she is now credited as creating some of the very first works of abstract art. She was a painter and dedicated mystic who was very influenced by spirituality and philosophy.

Inspired by new spirituality of the late 19th century, and with an interest in esoteric and the occult, Hilma af Klint (1862-1944) created a complex collection of artwork. She wanted to create a higher union between the opposites of the polarized world, such as male and female, light and darkness, striving for reconciliation of contradiction, for unity and totality. Af Klint thought that her art was meant for humanity in the future and stipulated that it should not be shown until 20 years after her death. But it even took a few more decades before her extensive body of work was discovered by the art world. In early 2013, the Museum of Modern Art in Stockholm, unveiled the largest af Klint exhibition to date and “Hilma af Kint: A Pioneer of Abstraction” was published.

Acne Studios created a capsule collection for the season of S/S 2014 which is an interpretation of Swedish abstract artist Hilma af Klint’s artwork. Creative Director, Jonny Johansson, got inspired from the paintings of the artist from the early 20th century creating a ready-to-wear collection consisting of astonishing patterns and colours. Af Klint is an influential name of the late 19th – early 20th century. Her work represents a canon of non-objective art built upon opposites and contradictions. Because of her believe that her artwork is meant for humanity of the future, her work weren’t available for the public until 20 years had passed from her death.
The S/S 2014 capsule collection includes men’s shirts, fleece, scarves and bags. The collection is available online and in the Acne Studios stores starting this month.
