There are a very few group of walkmans that have been plated with that precious metal in the body and represent the most luxurious walkmans ever made. Two of them (the Jx2000 and JX3000 from AIWA) are widely known, but there are a few more not as well-known that maybe you will discover in this article.
The most well known golden walkmans are, undoubtely, both the JX2000 and JX3000 from AIWA. Let’s take a look at them. AIWA JX2000 This is the JX2000 which is identical to the HS-JX505, except for the golden plated finish (made with 18k Gold) that it came with a gorgeus gold box, a big case and all the accesories were golden too. AIWA HS-JX2000 Upper view. Special supplied case. Some units came with a certificate stating the serial number of this limited edition. In other countries, the certificate is different.. This box, slightly different that previous one, was released in asian markets. Both european and asian boxes, with slightly different design. There are special versions of this unit. The JX2000TW was a special commerative release of the boxed JX2000D to commerate the 80th anniversary of the Chinese nationalist KMT political party in Taiwan and as such was only ever released in Taiwa. AIWA HS-JX3000 The JX3000 was released on 1991 and was the golden version of the already famous JX707. It was released also in a limited number of units. It’s identical to the JX707 and features Dolby C and Voice Navigation, but had lost the bi-azimuth mechanism and another features, sadly. AIWA HS-JX3000 Side view. Case, identical to the JX2000 one. This is the EX3000 model, a special version on the JX3000 only released in the japanese market, which features a TV tuner as an extra (notice that this is clearly seen by the black border around LCD display). This models are rarer than the previous. AIWA released the P108 gold, exactly the same as the P107., a simple player with Auto reverse and DSL. My P108 in gold. A really rare unit. SONY Golden Walkmans SONY released also a few golden models, but the majority of that seem to not to be true gold-plated but they seem to be close to that: One of them is a rare version of the original DD model (from my collection) Upside view. Panasonic But not only AIWA and SONY made golden walkmans (although they were the most proliphic brands indeed); Panasonic has a few golden models that I show here, and I’m sure they released probably another one: The RQ-SX91 Gold (from my collection) Backside view. Includes Aiwa battery but the battery does not hold a charge. The Walkman seems to power up OK electronically but I believe there to be two faults:1) The volume is very low which I understand to be a common fault with these. I also understand from the internet that this is fixable by changing the capacitors.2) The tape does not play but you can hear the motor working which I expect maybe that the drive belt has failed ?The unit still seems to power up OK despite this as you can see from the display in the photos.- However I am not an expert on these so please use your own judgement – please ask any questions.Clip on / screw on backup battery compartment. This takes 2 AAA batteries for backup. It shows slight signs of wear and use.Remote control – this seems to be in very good condition – it works as far as I can tell and has little or no signs of wear.Stereo Microphone – this also seems to be in very good condition with little or no signs of wear or use.Base unit – this is the transformer for running the unit and charging the battery. It works and has little signs of wear. Dolby B, Can’t you see?
Just to be clear, I’m not one of those folks that jumped on the “cassettes R cool” bandwagon right after Guardians of the Galaxy came out. You know what I’m talking about. No, rather, I have enjoyed cassettes for many years and still make mix tapes now and again, even though I just had to part with my beloved Nakamichi BX300 (the pain is still fresh). Anyhoo, my point is I’ve always kept on eye on cassettes and after really getting into the portable units the last few years I’ve been hoping to track down some of the hard-to-find units. It’s no easy task since A) Guardians of the Galaxy and subsequent pop culture references effectively quadrupled the interest in these cumbersome old machines (good luck finding a cheap Sony TPS-L2 nowadays!), and B) many of us that grew up on them are now at an age and of financial resources where the onset of nostalgia can be a very dangerous and expensive thing. So, rather than accumulate the busted old shitboxes that you’ll find on eBay for ten bucks, I’ve tried to focus on more elusive and exotic models and swipe them as money and luck would allow. One random day last year I logged on to eBay and my little notification informed me that a new listing met my criteria. To my surprise it was a buy-it-now listing for an AIWA HS-JX2000. In the box. For $79 shipped. WUT?! Let me back up and state that this is a highly sought after unit and the kind that only comes up for grabs a couple times a year. They are exceedingly rare nowadays. A pristine unit like this has been known to command over $1,000. Back to the listing! There were only a couple pics and only of the box, none of the unit. Did I mention that they were also frustratingly blurry? I could barely make out the player inside the box, but the listing said it was complete-in-box and the seller had excellent feedback. And it was in my state! I took the risk and bought it because I knew that the listing would be gone in a matter of minutes if I didn’t. After a heart-pounding 30 seconds at checkout, crossing my fingers that someone else hadn’t already grabbed it, I was informed of a successful transaction. YES!! IT WAS MINE!! Happy dance! 3 days later the postman delivered a package and I was grinning ear to ear. Why don’t you enjoy this pic for a moment while I go refill my scotch and then we’ll continue below.Now, for those not familiar with this model, it is crafted from a solid bar of gold (kidding). It is agold unit that was produced in the early ‘90s and was rather $$ in its day. It represented the pinnacle of portable cassette players upon its introduction and is a superb little machine with a wealth of features including Dolby NR, BBE, rechargeable battery, and oh so much more. To top it off, it had a special presentation with a lovely box, accessories like a charge stand, a case, and even came with a certificate and an AIWA member card (though I’ll be honest here and admit I have no clue what the card offered). To hold it is a real pleasure. It is heavier than you might imagine, but not overly so. The heft merely reminds you that it is not one of the BPC units that was spitting out of some sweatshop and landing on the shelf of your local drug store for $12.99. No, no, no. This was something special. The gold is not nearly as tacky in person as the pictures might imply, and the build is truly outstanding for its time. Unboxing this little gem is a real delight for all the senses. The seller had likely not known what they had and just thought, “eh, I dunno. Like $80? It is gold.” And they were right. It was complete, right down to the original batteries and nothing looked as if it had ever been used as evidenced by plastic wrap still on the charge cradle and headphones. Heaven.After opening the box and spreading the contents on the floor like a little kid with his first Lego set, I decided it was time to give it a go. I plugged in the handsome headphones into the little remote and inserted some fresh batteries and powered it up. Then I tuned to a local radio station. And then I waited. Nothing. Hmm. Ah! I needed to adjust the volume! I slowly ramped it up and up until it was on full blast and was met with but the faintest of sounds. Music playing but at a whisper level. I fiddled for a few minutes exhausting all the settings I could find and then it started to sink in. My poor little guy was sick. Damaged. Broken. I did what any geek does and ran to the forums. Sure enough, my suspicions confirmed, all signs pointed to tired capacitors that needed replacing. I was getting sound, that was a good sign, just not much. The mechanics all operated perfectly, just couldn’t produce anything that would qualify as a decent listening level. So, mystery solved for the moment. Yay.But where the hell was I going to get capacitors and how was I going to fix this guy? My experience in repairing portables is sort of limited and I didn’t want to damage him so back in the box he went until I could find a doctor to make him all better. And, flash forward to 2018, he’s still in his box and still can only whisper. In starting the blog the other day I have been inspired to start pulling out some old projects to share and I hope I’ll have an update before long. Either I will be replacing these caps myself (gulp!) or someone else will do it with my hard-earned cash. Either way, my little AIWA is going to sing again. So, the story ends here with a cliffhanger (OK, no melodrama). But I do look forward to a future post where I can share this little masterpiece of early ‘90s Japanese glory with all of you (assuming anyone is actually reading these).Oh yeah, if you have any insight on this model, or its repair, I’d love to hear from you! The last male northern white rhino in the world died a couple days ago and I refuse to let this model do the same.:)
