Generally speaking, CGV, Mega Box, and Lotte Cinema are the three major industry-leading movie theatres that dominate the landscape of cinemas in today’s Korean society. Their presence is so strong that it is no exaggeration that you cannot walk around your neighborhood without stumbling upon one of their local branches.

CGV, Mega Box, and Lotte Cinema all seem to have similar ticket prices. Unlike their standardized ticket prices, each of the major movie theatres in Korea offers a wide selection of snacks and drinks to stand out from the crowd. Buying your movie ticket comes in handy not just because you can shave off time you’d otherwise spend waiting in line at a ticket booth but also because you can see how packed your movie might be.

Below is a brief summary of the basic process required to pre-purchase movie tickets online:

Go to the website of the movie theatre you plan on visiting (e.g. CGV, Mega Box, and Lotte Cinema) On the website, select the branch/location of the movie theatre closest to you. Using your GPS on your mobile phone allows you to locate the nearest movie theatre. Select the movie you would like to watch. Once selected, you will be taken to another page where you are given a list of available timeslots as well as seats. Once you’ve selected a seat, the website should take you to the final payment page that summarises your order and the price. Credit cards are the most major method of online payment and most movie theatres in Korea also accept convenient mobile payment services like Kakao Pay. After completing the payment, a confirmation message will be sent to your mobile phone shortly. Make sure you retain this message as it includes critical information on your payment and seat. Depending on movie theatres, the confirmation message might include a QR code which you can use to enter the venue in lieu of a paper ticket. Please note that you might sometimes need to physically have your paper ticket issued at an onsite ticket machine using your booking information.

Dubbing and Subtitles

Because you are in Korea, you might feel like trying some Korean films, but you don’t really have the command of the Korean language. Generally speaking, Korean movies are played only in Korean without dubbing or English subtitles. However, because of the recent global expansion of the Korean industry – exemplified by the case of ‘Parasite’ (기생충) which brought home the prestigious original screenplay Oscar as the first Asian film – some Korean movies are starting to include English subtitles.

Checking if subtitles are offered in Korean films is quite an easy task if you memorize a few Korean words. On the schedule, if a Korean movie title includes ‘자막’ (subtitles) at the end, then rest assured that the movie is playing with English subtitles. This also applies to non-Korean movies and they’d include Korean subtitles if they have a ‘자막’ sign on them.

In terms of ‘더빙’ (dubbing), it seems quite rare although it is not unheard of. As a rule of thumb, dubbing is only available in animation and cartoon movies which target mainly young kids. By contrast, there is no English dubbing for Korean movies available at movie theatres in Korea to our knowledge.

Watching Movies Again as the Pandemic Lingers

Recently, we decided that it was time to get out and go back to the movies. Prior to the pandemic, we enjoyed going to AK Plaza’s CGV and watching the blockbusters on the big screen. With the release of Fast and Furious 9, we were very eager to see how things had changed and see all the action in the theater.

What it is like going to CGV at AK Plaza with Social Distancing Precautions

We ordered our tickets online at http://www.cgv.co.kr/ticket/eng where you can choose the English Ticketing option and find the theater and movie you want to see. Then you can choose your movie time, your seats and pay for your tickets. Once you pay for your tickets, they give you a reservation code to pick up your tickets. When choosing your seating, please note that they have blocked off seats attempting social distancing.

After a subway ride and grabbing a quick bite to eat, we went over to the theater area on the 8th floor. The concession area has multiple ordering kiosks for ordering your drinks and snacks. However, there is a sign on there that you have to eat any food before entering the theater. You are also only allowed to bring water and non-alcoholic drinks into the theater. So, if you love watching movies while eating popcorn or snacks, you will be a bit disappointed.

The kiosks for picking up your tickets are still in the same area. You enter your reservation number and your ticket is printed. There are several tables in the concession area that you can eat there or sit and wait prior to your movie. Once in the theater, you must still continue to wear your mask.

All in all, even though things looked quite different, we enjoyed our movie experience as much as any of the times prior to the pandemic.
