Mở hộp và đánh giá tai nghe Phonak PFE 012
Phonak không hẳn là tên tuổi mới trong làng thiết bị audio nhỏ gọn, nhưng tuổi đời khá ngắn và giã từ cuộc chơi khá nhanh.
Như ta đã biết Phonak đến với sân chơi bằng sản phẩm đình đám 1 thời, gây bao tranh cãi trong suốt năm 2011, với cụm số 112 theo sau.
Nhiều người đã nghĩ rằng, Phonak đã mang lại 1 trải nghiệm mới về tổng âm, trong đó dãi treble được trình diễn mới lạ, và cũng là điểm đẹp nhất khi bàn về chất tiếng của Phonak.
Hôm nay, ta cùng nhìn lại người anh em khác của ngôi sao 112, Phonak 012.
Về ngoại hình. Hầu như không có khác biệt về thiết kế, trừ màu sắc giữa 2 anh em 012, và 112.
Về cấu hình, cả 2 đều cùng chung 1 thông số 1 driver BA duy nhất.
Về giá là 1 khoản chênh lệch kha khá, và số tiền đó ta chi trả cho 1 số khác biệt nhỏ thuộc dãi bass của 2 anh em.
Tại Vn, điều hi hữu đã xảy ra khi 112 có mức giá tốt hơn rất nhiều mức giá vốn đã khá tốt của 012, tất cả thuộc về ẩn số của hàng tray.
Nhìn lại trong tầm giá của Phonak 012, ta không có nhiều tranh cử. Hiện bạn có thể dễ dàng tìm thấy ở tầm giá dưới 100 usd.
Không có nhiều thành công đến từ những iem 1 driver BA. Một số có vẻ như được sản xuất chỉ nhằm thu vén lợi nhuận từ mọi phân khúc của các hãng. Nhưng với Phonak, đó là 1 câu chuyện rất khác.
Cho đến nay, Phonak chưa bao giờ cố gắng nhồi nhét thật nhiều driver BA vào housing, điển hình điểm cao nhất của hãng ở hiện tại và có lẽ là mãi mãi trong tương lai, 232 vẫn chỉ có 2 driver.
Trước khi ta đi tiếp vào bài viết, mình hi vọng, những ai với bản tính thích phản bác, thích tranh luận nên lưu ý ta đang bàn về 1 chiếc iem dưới 100 xu.
Mình ko mong tìm thấy những so sánh lệch cân, chệch đường!
Tại phân khúc giá dưới 100 xu, hiện tại có 2 iem mình rất thích. Green House DMS, với anh em song sinh B2, và Phonak 012.
Đặc điểm chung của những iem này là đều gợi nhớ thứ treble đã làm nên huyền thoại quá khứ Etymotic.
Nhưng so với Er4, dãi cao của b2 vẫn kém phần sắc lạnh và gai góc. Tuy hiện diện dãi cao được tập trung khá nhiều độ ngân, thi thoảng ta vẫn cần B2 sắc sảo hơn chút. Nếu những gì B2 có là thiếu tính lạnh nhưng khá thừa tính chói, khi so với Er4, tính chói này bạn có thể bắt gặp ở một số bản thân, mà phần nhiều ko nên hiểu là sib của giọng ca, thì với Phonak 012 khi so với er4, cái thiếu là cá tính và chút gì hoang dại.
Bù trừ điểm thiếu đó, là ma thuật Phonak đã trình diễn trong kĩ thuật tune âm của hãng.
Dãi treble tươi sáng, nhưng lại ảo diệu. Có tan có ngân, nổi lên giữa nền nhạc nhưng lại trau chuốt vừa đủ giúp bạn ko cảm thấy điểm gây chói, gây xé.
Bạn có thể dõi theo dãi treble này rất lâu mà ko cảm thấy mệt mỏi và cần cho đôi tai nghỉ ngơi.
Dẫu sao cũng vì điều này, mà khi nghe saxophone với Phonak 012 mình hiếm khi tới đỉnh.
Bàn về bass.
Thứ bass của B2 hay Green House DMS vẫn năm ở 1 mức cao hơn so với 012 và huyền thoại 1 thời.
Với 1 bass head như mình.
Nhận xét về bass của Phonak 012, là hời hợt. Đủ về lượng, nhưng thiếu dấu ấn. Tuy nhiên hãy yên tâm là bạn sẽ ko cảm thấy thiếu bass, trong điều kiện bạn đánh giá cao 1 dãi bass được thể hiện kĩ thuật thay vì 1 dạng bass theo kiểu dội bom.
Song song đó, bass của Phonak 012 và DMS cũng có đôi chổ tương đồng. Tính dàn trải giúp không gian giãn nở, thư thái. Song khác biệt lớn nằm ở việc B2 dàn trải theo chiều rộng và cả bề sâu thì 012 vẫn chỉ dừng lại ở mức dàn phẳng.
Âm mid của Phonak 012 không có nhiều điều lạm bàn.
Âm không tiến.
Đôi khi hơi chìm vào tổng dàn nhạc.
Và thường khi bạn coa thể cảm thấy ca sĩ hay tay guitar chính hơi lệch về 1 bên cánh sân khấu. Nếu cảm thấy điều này thì nên điều chỉnh lại cách đeo.
Dãi mid rất thường, dễ nghe, nhưng ko đủ khiến bạn bay bỗng.

Chất âm
Bass của Phonak 012, là vừa đủ hài hào và hòa quyện các dải tần, đủ về lượng và rất màu sắc. Tính dàn trải giúp không gian rộng mở và thoáng đãng hơn. Âm mid của Phonak 012 khá nét và trong, âm hình dừng ở mức trung để khoảng cách người nghe và ca sĩ trở nên vừa đủ, không quá gần gụi và cũng không qua xa cách. Đặc biệt bạn có thể cảm thấy vị trí các nhạc công trong dàn nhạc, như tiếng dàn violin bên cánh sân khấu và các nhạc cụ đồng vs bộ trống lùi phía sau sân khấu. Dải treble lên tới, được tái tạo đầy mới lạ và có độ linh hoạt cao, nhưng không hề lạc điệu so với dải mid.
Tổng âm của Phonak 012 vẫn thiên về dải bass đủ lượng, dải trung và treble hòa quyện tốt khiến bạn cảm nhận một không gian âm nhạc hài hòa hơn, không quá lanh lảnh như những dòng tai châu Âu khác, và có chút gì đó hơi mờ ảo.

So Early in 2013, the audiophile community was upset to hear that Audeo the hearing aid maker turn a remarkable IEM designer was to cease all productions of the PFE (Perfect Fit Ear) range of in-ear monitors. This is one earphone that I have owned since 2009 and while others come and go the PFE 112 is always there. Here we will take a look at the original model 112 and what made it so great and why it is still an incredible buy.
Audeo PFE 112 Earphone Review – Packaging – (8/10)
Nicely packaged in a reasonably large box compared to others. The earphones are presented well with a nice amount of information on what you should expect from the phones. All in nothing too exciting but done very nice non the less.
Audeo PFE 112 Earphone Review – Accessories – (9/10)
Very good accessories on offer here from Audio. 3 sets of silicone tips in small medium and large and also a pair of comply tips custom-designed for the PFE. There are also 2 filter sets to tune the sound to the sound signature you prefer. 2 sets of silicone ear guides and a nice case complete the package which is all and all very good.

Ok, so they aren’t the most visually striking set of IEM’s that you will see however they are unique and the design shape is more about providing that perfect fit. The color scheme is silver and black and while dull it is inoffensive and completely liveable.
The cable is great it is a soft touch rubber and very much anti-tangle. The cable cinch is small and works extremely well. at the other end is a straight jack. Since I am writing this review 4 years after purchasing them I can attest that the cable and phones themselves have held up impeccably and there is not even a hint of wear and tear.
Audeo PFE 112 Earphone Review – Isolation (7.5/10)
The PFE isolate well, they are up there with others but a step behind a pair of Etymotics with tri flange tips, and of course in this regard I rate my customs at a full 10/10.
Fit (9/10) – Apart from my customs I can honestly say that I have never experienced another IEM as comfortable as the PFE, they seal well, the silicone tips are extremely soft and after a while, you will even forget that they are in your ears. Brilliant.
Sleeping in these is no problem at all and with the ear guides, microphonics are virtually nonexistent.
Audeo PFE 112 Earphone Review – Sound Quality (9/10)
On first listen, you will notice that the sound out of these is simply wonderful. The detail is all there and the instrument separation is excellent as is soundstage which is some of the best I have heard from a BA IEM.
On that subject, since the PFE only has one balanced armature per housing it is stunning that such a sound is achieved bass is of excellent quality but to me has just the right amount of quantity as well which is something other BA phones tend to struggle with.
In terms of mids, this is without a doubt the strong suit. Vocals come across rich and lush guitars and the like with a lovely tone and hint of warmth. Highs are accurate and fast if anything slightly behind the mids in position but in no way at all is recessed.
in my mind, this mix makes for the perfect setup and tuning, one which I have found hard to let go of over the years hence why they are my reference phones on basis of comparison with all others that I have owned.
But wait………There’s more……….. That’s right as mentioned earlier the PFE comes with 2 sets of filters that can change the tuning. Impressions above are reflective of the black filters which are the ones I tend to stick with however switch to the supplied grey ones and the highs are enhanced, detail becomes crazy and the lows are reduced ever so slightly.
I must admit it is very nice to have the ability to tune the phones and additionally you can purchase a set of green filters to take the sound in a more bassy direction. I have heard them and it is very impressive however I tend to stick with the black filters and have a dedicated bass IEM (currently the Denon AH-C300).
Audeo PFE 112 Earphone Review – CONCLUSION
Audeo will always have a place in my heart as one of my most preferred IEM’s they have done well and lasted me 4 years now, one day they will break and I don’t know what I will do.
The reason for them not doing so well has been many and has been discussed at length to me I think it is a combination of a few factors, firstly they just weren’t sexy enough for buyers. Audiophiles are a fickle bunch and some are always looking for the coolest looking trendiest flavor of the month product which leaves companies like Audeo who stick with design and don’t push the marketing angle behind.
It truly is a shame that they are leaving the audio game because they really brought something unique to the table out of 100+earphones auditioned and these are the only ones that stuck with me……………. surely that has to mean something.

One of the peculiarities of the in-ear headphones market is that it’s being contested by companies from such a wide range of backgrounds. You have your traditional large consumer A/V manufacturers (Sony, Denon, JVC), your respected audiophile brands (Sennheiser, Audio-Technica) and those who have crossed over from the professional audio sphere (Shure and BeyerDynamic spring instantly to mind). Type ‘Phonak’ into Google, however, and you won’t find any of this stuff.
The Swiss company has a 60 year history in the hearing aid industry, and only crossed over into the US consumer audio market less than two years ago. The Audeo range instantly caused a stir in audiophile circles (check Head.Fi’s excellent forums for details) as a relatively inexpensive IEM that delivered surprisingly high-end performance. Now it’s being bought to the UK.
First impressions are promising, with a well-designed box containing the IEMs and a healthy selection of accessories. As well as a soft, two pocket case, leaving room for the earphones and all the bits, We get three pairs of gel tips to replace the fitted Comply foam tips, a pair of silicon ear guides plus a tip cleaner, six spare filters and a filter-changing tool. Interestingly, the filters provide a means of customising the sound. Opt for one of the two pairs of black filters and you should get a sound with a more pronounced bass and treble. The grey filters, meanwhile, is designed to add clarity and definition in the mid-range. In theory this is a nice idea – we’ll see how it works out later on.
In terms of design and build quality, the Phonaks are easily up to the standard you’d expect from a set of earphones at this price point. The two-tone black and silver design of our review sample looks striking without looking gaudy, and the earpieces are actually quite unobtrusive once inserted. There’s a good, solid rubberized cable leading from the reinforced plug to a tough-looking Y-piece, and from there a slider makes it easy to adjust the length of the final stretches of cable for your comfort, while there’s more reinforcement where the wire meets the earpiece.
The PFE in the product name stands for Perfect Fit Earphones, and it has to be said that Phonak isn’t making any unreasonable claims here. The PFE 112s fit into the hook over the ear style adopted by Shure for most of its range, Klipsch for its Custom series and Sennheiser for the IE range. Sometimes these fit brilliantly without any trouble (thanks Shure, thanks Sennheiser) and sometimes (as in the case of my own Klipsch Custom 2s) it’s a nightmare to get a decent fit and a proper seal. Your mileage will, of course, vary with the size and shape of your own lug ’oles, but I get the Phonaks seated properly first-time, every time, and once they’re in place I find it almost impossible to dislodge them – which is more than I can say for some conventional IEM designs.
Noise isolation is excellent, with the Phonaks successfully drowning out noisy travellers on the train, dishwashers in the kitchen and the spectacular racket of my desktop PC. Throw in the fact that the cables seem very tangle-resistant, and that the ear-guides do a great job of reducing cable noise, and Phonak definitely seems to have done its homework here.
What’s more, the Phonaks are extremely comfortable. Over long periods I find most IEMs have a tendency to irritate my ear canal, with the Klipsch Custom-2s and my Etymotic hf5s probably the worst offenders. I wore the Phonaks over two three-hour train trips in a day without feeling the need to remove them once (bar the obligatory ticket checks and coffee breaks). The lightweight design works wonders here, and the Phonaks don’t even cause aggravation should you wear them lying with your head on its side.
None of this would matter a jot if the sound isn’t up to scratch, but I’m pleased to say that the PFE 112s justify Phonak’s growing reputation. In fact, for a headphone with nothing more than a single balanced armature they’re extremely good. The PFE 112s have a strong but not boomy or overpowering low-end, a crisp, detailed high-end and a wonderful, smooth and balanced mid-range in-between. The sound-stage is about as wide as I’ve encountered from an IEM, and there’s a great, almost holographic sense of positioning – again, something that single armature IEMs tend to struggle with.
Impressively, the switchable filter idea works too, and it’s worth experimenting. At first, I preferred the bass boost and more exciting treble offered with the black filters, but the more I play with the grey filters, the more I like them. You get the clarity and precision you’d expect from, say, Etymotic’s hf2s, but with a touch more bass and a little more body and weight in the mid-range. For classical music in particular the PFE 112s are a brilliant listen, the Phonaks coping well with massed instruments and enabling you to pick out small nuances in the horn or string sections. They’re also exceptionally sensitive to subtle changes in volume or tone.
The Phonaks also cope brilliantly with vocal-led tracks with relatively sparse instrumentation. There’s something about that creamy, warm mid-range that just works wonders with the human voice. There’s no problem, however, if your tastes run more to rock or pop. While there are more punchy IEMs around, the Phonaks’ rich, clear and balanced presentation did wonders for pretty much everything I threw at them, from Muse’s baroque rock to Maxwell’s retro soul.
The only thing I would mention is that the Phonaks are harder to drive than most single-armature IEMs. Using an iPod touch or Samsung YP-Q1 (with a library of FLAC tracks to ensure optimal test conditions) I’ve had to twitch the volume up by 10 to 15 per cent to achieve my normal volume level, and I’ve had to do similar things with my desktop PC and an iBasso D2 headphone amp. This hasn’t affected audio quality in any way, and the Phonaks don’t need a lot of volume to sound good, but it is something to bear in mind if you like to listen loud (and have no concerns about long-term damage to your ears).
Now things get really interesting. Had the Phonaks launched eighteen months ago when they did in the States, I think they’d have been pretty much untouchable at this price point. However, the IEM market has now reached a point where aggressively priced dual armature models are hitting the streets for similar money. Jay’s Q-Jays can widely be found for around or under £100, while the Ultimate Ears 700s can be had for only £10 more than the PFE 112s.
Just to be clear, a dual armature IEM won’t necessarily beat a single armature IEM every time, but the Ultimate Ears 700s are a pretty tough earphone to beat at this price point. Having recently borrowed a pair, I can only agree with Hugo’s Recommended verdict. However, comparing the UEs directly with the Phonaks the outcome is less clear cut than you might imagine. Sure, the UEs have the edge when it comes to their gorgeous, crystalline top-end and their rich, friendly bass, but the PFE 112s win out in other areas. Listen to Eden from Talk Talk’s always stunning Spirit of Eden, and as the track ramps up, layering instrument on instrument on instrument, the Phonaks manage to maintain a clarity and separation that the UEs can’t quite match. Switch to something a bit more fun, in this case Royskopp’s Happy Up Here, and the Phonaks less up-front, smoother, more balanced presentation is actually a little easier on the ears.
I’ve spent hours over the last two days switching between the two IEMs and trying to work out which I prefer, and I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s really just a case of character. In the same way that I find myself switching between Grado and Audio-Technica full-sized cans depending on what I’m listening to and what mood I’m in, I could see myself flip-flopping between the Phonaks and the UEs. Given that one is a slightly cheaper, single-armature IEM, that’s something for Phonak to be proud of.
However, in the real world most of us – me included – can only afford to make one choice. All I can say is that the UEs remain the top dog at this price point if you want optimum clarity at the top-end and a good, fun, bass-rich sound, and that, if they only had five minutes to try each pair, it’s the UEs that most listeners would walk away with. The Phonaks take longer to reveal their strengths, but they do have a really lovable, warm and balanced output that doesn’t allow any one frequency to dominate the sound. For me, that’s enough to earn an equal, and no less valid recommendation.
Verdict
The Phonak PFE 112s offer good comfort and excellent sound quality for a single armature IEM. While the affordable dual-driver competition makes your buying decision very difficult, these little beauties should be near the top of any mid-range IEM shortlist.

Comfort (5/5) – The part of the housings that fits inside the ear is small and the earphones are very light. As a result the PFEs can really disappear during everyday use. Bonus points for the included silicone cable guides. The only (rare) problem I had was that of losing seal under strenuous exercise with silicone tips
Sound (8.8/10) – Ultimately, the sound is really what makes or breaks an earphone. After my initial listening rounds with the PFE I settled on the grey filters and kept them in for the duration of the test. To my ears the grey filters provide more sparkle in the treble and a slightly smoother and thicker upper midrange. The black filters accentuate the bass but I found the (slight) hardware bass boost provided by my iBasso T4 to be a better solution. Tips matter as well – the included comply T130s will provide a more tactile bass presentation but also slightly veil the high end. The silicone tips have a more transparent sound but for some reason none of the stock tips fit me quite right. I did finally find a good fit with Jays silicone tips off of my J-Jays though.
The overall sound of the PFEs amazes with its smoothness and clarity. The bass is tight and accurate. The mids are somewhat liquid and very well-positioned in being neither forward nor recessed. The treble is similarly accurate and quite enjoyable. There is a small amount of unevenness at the high end, but this can be reduced a bit by using the black filters. I wasn’t bothered enough by it to give up the grey filters though. Overall the PFEs have a tonal balance on the cool side of the spectrum and very high resolving capability. Soundstaging is about average – wider than the Ety ER-4S and RE0 but not as expansive as the ATH-CK10 or RE252. Instrumental separation is excellent and positioning is quite good as well. They lack the famed Etymotic forwardness, which makes it a tiny bit harder to pick out details with the PFE but results in a less fatiguing sound.
Amping: The PFE is one the rare IEMs that do benefit from amping. Despite the relatively low rated impedance and high sensitivity, the PFE becomes truly effortless when fed enough power. My iBasso T4 was sufficiently powerful but the transparency of the D10 and mini3 gave a nicer sound. When properly amped the PFE maintains its incredible clarity and resolution and becomes very hard to beat in transient response and all-around speed. A positive side effect of their inefficiency is the ability of the PFE to suppress background hiss from impedance mismatches. At listening volume the PFE exhibited no notable hiss from any of my amps or sources except the Amp3, with which they were still far more tolerable than with most earphones.
Value (9/10) – Despite the crop of excellent mid-range earphones currently available to the average consumer, the year-old Phonak Audeo PFEs still amaze with their incredibly coherent presentation and musical sound signature. I can’t recommend them enough for acoustic tracks, but they work well with nearly all music styles. The possible combinations of tips and filters and the responsiveness of the armatures to equalization also make the PFEs very tunable. Die-hard bassheads may want to look elsewhere but the PFE should be shortlisted by anyone looking for balance and clarity without the need for monstrous isolation.
