A virtual tour of the Burnet Campus
Unfortunately, we are unable to welcome you to visit our beautiful facility right now. Hopefully, this virtual tour of our Burnet campus will give you a sense of why we are so proud to work at Cincinnati Children’s.
Let’s start with Location A, the home to multiple outpatient clinics, as well as serving as the main inpatient units for general pediatrics and subspecialty patients.
The residency program has its home on A8. Here, you will find the offices for the program directors, the administrative staff, resident lounge, shared workspaces, multiple call rooms and the main residency conference room. A8 is also home to the outpatient clinics for neurology and neurosurgery.
The 7th floor of Location A is home to the inpatient units for Pulmonary, Trauma and Neurosciences, including an epilepsy monitoring unit.
On the 6th floor, we find the 24-bed inpatient unit for our cardiology patients, as well as numerous Heart Institute-focused clinical resources. The 6th floor of Location A is also home to 41 patient beds for Hospital Medicine patients.
On the 5th floor, you will find both 68 inpatient beds and the day hospital for Hematology, Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplant patients.
The 4th floor of Location A is home to Gastroenterology and Nephrology inpatients, as well as a 12-bed inpatient Rehabilitation unit.
The Transitional Care Center, located on the 3rd floor, is a 24-bed unit for trach and vent patients. The 3rd floor also houses inpatient units for surgical subspecialties.
Multiple subspecialty clinics have their home on the 1st level of Location A, including Orthopaedics, Oncology and Dialysis.
Moving on to Location B, you will find our Radiology department and its myriad of imaging modalities available to our patients. B is also the main access point for patients seeking care in the Emergency Department and with families with patients admitted to our ICUs. Location B is home to one of the busiest emergency departments in the country. Our ED is a Level 1 trauma center with more than 40 beds as well as four beds in our shock trauma suite for critically ill and injured patients. One of our many Urgent Cares is also located adjacent to the ED.
Our 75-bed, Level 4 regional Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is located on the 4th floor of Location B.
Our 35-bed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit is currently located on the 5th floor. It houses medical and surgical patients from the region and around the world.
The Main Concourse of Location C is home to our gift shop and the outpatient pharmacy.
It is also the point of entry for multiple clinics, including Adolescent Medicine, as well as our operating rooms.
On the 1st floor of Location D, you will find Sabin Auditorium, home to Pediatric Grand Rounds.
Our cafeteria features a Starbucks, healthy food choices and is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Seacrest Studios is one of the many amenities and resources available to our patients and families.
Location D is also home to the Mayerson Center, where we advocate for and evaluate children who are victims of abuse and neglect.
And finally, Location D is also home to robust Telemedicine services.
When the Research Foundation opened in 1931, Cincinnati Children’s became the first pediatric hospital in the country to have a building dedicated solely to research. Today, we have one of the largest pediatric research facilities in the country, providing more than 1.4 million square feet of research laboratory space and support for the full continuum of research, from basic to translational to clinical, with an unrelenting focus on curing childhood diseases.
The Medical Office Building, located down the street from the main inpatient towers, is home to Occupational and Physical Therapy, Developmental \u0026 Behavioral Pediatrics, as well as the Pediatric Primary Care Center. The PPC, as it’s known, is home to our resident continuity clinics and features numerous resources for our patients and their families, including legal support, a WIC office and a food pantry.
Our state-of-the-art Simulation Center is located a short distance from the Burnet campus. Here, we train thousands of healthcare professionals every year.
We sincerely hope that this virtual tour of our Burnet campus was able to give you a sense of what facilities offer to our patients and their families.
And, hold on a minute, we’re not done yet. Opening November 2021, the new Critical Care Tower will add over 630,000 square feet and 249 new beds, including a new Emergency Department, NICU, PICU, Cardiac ICU, Complex Airway and Bone Marrow Transplant Unit. We can’t wait for it to open.

Our history: Spirit of history alive at Burnet House site
The most historic corner in the city will soon be bustling once again. The northwest corner of Third and Vine streets was the site of the Burnet House, the famous 19th-century hotel that played an important role in ending the Civil War.
City Club Apartments is renovating the former PNC Annex building at 309 Vine St. into luxury apartments, along with a marketplace, café and rooftop restaurant. The first tenants are moving in this month.
The renovation includes restoring many of the original features in the lobby of the beaux-arts-style annex built for Union Central Life Insurance Co. in 1928, including the marble walls, decorative metal work, ornate ceilings and white-on-black maps of old Cincinnati along the frieze.
In the foyer, an aged bronze tablet original to the building features a bas-relief bust of prominent early settler Jacob Burnet and tells the site’s storied history.
“This site was occupied before 1802 by an Indian mound”: Early settlers found elliptical Indian burial mounds built by the ancient Adena people throughout the Cincinnati basin.
In his 1815 book “Natural and Statistical View, or Picture of Cincinnati,” Dr. Daniel Drake described a large mound east of Race Street at Fifth Street that extended nearly to this site.
“From 1802-1825 by the estate of Judge Jacob Burnet”: Burnet was a judge and politician in the Northwest Territory, a U.S. senator and president of Cincinnati College. Debts forced him to sell his mansion in 1825, and he moved to Seventh and Elm streets.
In 1842, William Shires used the property for a summer garden and theater with a restaurant in the Burnet mansion. Shires’ Garden burned down in 1848.
“From 1850-1926 by the Burnet House”: Designed by renowned architect Isaiah Rogers, “the finest hotel in the world,” as claimed by the Illustrated London News, boasted 340 rooms and modern amenities like running water.
The H-shaped hotel was capped with a dome in the middle, making it look more like a capitol building. A grand tiered staircase led to Ionic columns at the entrance.
Every notable Queen City visitor, from Oscar Wilde to Jenny Lind, future presidents to a future king (Edward VII), stayed at the Burnet House. Abraham Lincoln was a guest twice, the last time on his birthday en route to his inauguration.
On March 20, 1864, Gens. Ulysses S. Grant and William Tecumseh Sherman met in Parlor A on the second floor, spread out maps and made the plans for how to end the Civil War. The beginning of the end happened there.
Architect James W. McLaughlin supervised a major remodel in 1885. The dome was removed, and a new main entrance was created on Vine Street.
By the 1920s, the city’s activities had shifted away from the river to the financial and shopping districts on Fourth and Fifth streets. Mid-19th-century modern was outdated, and the Burnet House was torn down in 1926.
Union Central Life Insurance purchased the site to build an annex to their distinctive neoclassical skyscraper at Fourth and Vine streets. The plan was an 18-story structure in the same style, but only the first nine-story section was completed. The buildings have been occupied by Central Trust Bank and PNC Bank.
The annex building has a similar H-shape and configuration as the remodeled Burnet House in possible homage. The spirit of the Burnet House lingers at the site.

The Burnet House. . , When it opened May 30, 1850, the 340-room hotel located on this site was considered one of the finest hotels in the world. Abraham Lincoln stayed here on September 17-18, 1859, while campaigning for the Ohio Republican Party. Lincoln also stayed at this hotel on February 12, 1861, during his inaugural journey to Washington, D.C. to be sworn in as the 16th president. His speech from the hotel balcony expressed his desire to abide by the Constitution on the issue of slavery. After the Battle of Shiloh in April 1862, the hotel served as a hospital for wounded troops nursed by the Cincinnati Sisters of Charity., On March 20, 1864, Generals Ulysses S. Grant and William T. Sherman met in Parlor A to coordinate their campaigns against Richmond, VA and Atlanta, GA, eventually leading to Union victory in the Civil War. After the war, Parlor A was used by local veterans for the Grand Army of the Republic meetings., The register of the hotel bears the names of Henry Clay, Daniel Webster, James Buchanan, Stephen A. Douglas, Salmon P. Chase, and Horace Greeley. The Union Central Building Annex, NW. corner of Third and Vine Sts., occupies the SITE OF THE BURNET HOUSE, which the Illustrated London News called “the finest hotel in the world.” Built on land formerly owned by Judge Jacob Burnet, the big, domed structure was formally opened on May 3, 1850.
As the city’s leading hotel, the Burnet House had many important associations with Cincinnati life. Abraham Lincoln stopped here in February 1861 while on his way to Washington. Around mid-March of 1864 Generals grant and Sherman met in Parlor A of the Burnet House, spread out their big war maps, and discussed the campaign that soon resulted in Sherman’s historic devastation of Georgia and South Carolina. Parlor A thus became a kind of shrine, and for many years the Sons of Union Veterans held their meetings in it.
Weddings, banquets, balls, parties, receptions, and political gathers enlivened the hotel for many decades. After remodeling, it continued to operate until 1926, when it was torn down to make way for the present building.

The 9-story Union Central Building Annex is now known as the PNC Annex and is part of the PNC Complex along with the neighboring PNC Tower. The building is an office building with walkways connecting it with the Tower across Ogden Place. Illustrations of the Burnett House can be seen as the Greater Cincinnati Memory Project website.
