Where to buy Canare DigiFlex Gold
Sorry to raise an old thread, but I wanted to share my experience with this cable, which I bought for about €35,- with ferrite clamps.
Last week I decided to replace the Oyaide 510 use as a digital interconnect for the Canare Digiflex gold with 2 ferrite clamps I had lying around.
The difference was surprising; first that there was a difference anyway between digital cables, and second, that the Digiflex at 1/5 of the price was clearly better then the Oyaide.
The Oyaide was a little bit too smooth in my system; the Digiflex seems to add more treble, giving a much more spatial and more upfront sound stage that was a good thing in my set (see sign).
Mind you, with my former DAC (Audio-GD Ref5DSP) I preferred the Oyaide, so my preference is system dependent.
It keeps on amazing me there sometimes is a clear audible difference between digital cables, that manifest itself as a significant sound stage size difference in my speaker based set.
I also tried the ferrite beads on the Oyaide but that didn’t seem to make any difference; on the Digiflex they seemed to tame the treble in a good way, but I didn’t really experiment in that direction.

Extreme Overkill
Take a look at this cable and try to take in the scale of it…it’s big cable…nearly as big as the body of Canare’s RCA connector, and Canare’s RCA connectors are not insignificant in size! This is serious cable, and it can deliver serious performance.
When we first started selling Canare cables, we thought that their LV-61S would be all the cable that anyone would ever want or need in a non-commercial A/V system. After all, it’s high performance cable that out-performs many higher priced options. It has a professional look and feel, and it delivers long-term performance, so why would anyone want anything else?
Well, if there is one thing that can be learned from selling online, it is that people are highly diverse in their opinions. We’ve sold lots of Canare cables, (mostly LV-61S) and almost everyone is enthusiastically satisfied, but a few folks still wanted something more…something even better. At first, we asked why, and even argued with them, but over time, we have come to realize that there are some of you out there who may actually be able to appreciate the difference between LV-61S and LV-77S. One particular professional in the recording business insisted that LV-77S easily out-performed LV-61S in his setup. He said that he could hear the difference easily. Since then, we have offered these cables to other discriminating individuals, and they have told similar stories. Incredible!
So, without further ado, here it is for all of you who can hear the difference — The Incredible Canare LV-77S Precision Digital Audio Interconnect Cable.
What Makes Canare So Great?
Canare is the choice of professionals and discriminating enthusiasts, alike. You can tell, just by looking, that Canare cables and connectors are well made, and you can tell by reading the rave reviews that Canare cables are great performers! The almost infamous Canare DigiFlex Gold cable assembly used the smaller LV-61S cable. Over the years, it has earned such glowing reviews that one can only imagine what the reviewers will say when they try this cable!
We have found that the key to great cables is in the connectors. Exotic conductors and shielding are fine, but it’s the connectors that really make the difference. If you want uncompromising performance, you need cables that are capable of maintaining a constant impedance. You don’t want any impedance bumps at the connectors, and you don’t want the cable itself to change impedance when it bends. Even the finest cable changes impedance a little bit when it is bent sharply, so avoid doing so. Nice, smooth, consistent 75-Ohm impedance – that’s what your equipment wants, and that’s what will deliver the best performance.
You also want superior mechanical integrity. Nice, tight connections that will not degrade over time. You want to avoid dissimilar metals, which can lead to corrosion and degrade connections. To avoid dissimilar metals, try to stay away from soldered connections wherever you can, because solder almost guarantees that dissimilar metals will be in contact. Good solder work minimizes the problem, but there is also the challenge of making a solder connection without heat deforming the dielectric material of the cable. Any dimensional change in the dielectric will affect the impedance of the cable at that point.
Connectors
It is hard to imagine a finer RCA connector than Canare’s. They are precision machined to maintain a constant 75-Ohm impedance. We install them using a Canare tool which always prepares the cable ends, just right. The connectors are crimped in place, using heavy, precision-machined dies. The crimps are so tight that oxygen is excluded, and thus corrosion is prevented. It’s an awesome system, and the resulting terminations are in a class of their own.
Generic RCA audio plugs and cables have been around for over 50 years, but the old solder-type plugs typically have an impedance of about 25 ohms. They exhibit extremely poor return loss performance, even when mated to high quality cable. Some of the so-called ” high end ” cables use exotic-sounding materials and make unsupportable claims, but still fail to solve this very real and important problem.
Canare’s new “True 75-Ohm” RCA crimp plugs solve these problems. They are impedance matched and achieve excellent digital and analog performance with a usable bandwidth to 200 MHz! The connector design ensures consistent and extremely reliable terminations. VSWR is typically less than 1.1 from DC to 200 MHz. The crimp design excludes oxygen, preventing corrosion associated with dissimilar metals, which can degrade even the best soldered connections.
Canare connectors connect up smoothly, and maintain good contact, while protecting your equipment investment. The design ensures extremely consistent and reliable terminations. If you look at the picture at the above right, you can see the gold-plated center shaft and the gold-plated beryllium copper internal pressure fingers. The design ensures good contact, while solving the “grip of death” problem that can be an issue with Monster and some of the other manufacturers’ connectors. (Those “grip of death” connectors put unnecessary strain on your equipment!)
The Cable
These Canare LV-77S cables are lightweight and more flexible than multiple shield cables from other manufacturers. They have PVC jackets with a smooth, non-glare finish. This is a professional, high performance, double-shielded, low loss coaxial cable. This cable is not for everyone. The specifications and performance are very high, to be sure — higher than you reasonably need for digital audio applications…most folks would be completely satisfied with LV-61S, but if you want performance that goes beyond reason, this may be just the cable for you.
LV-77S is an oversized 7.7mm Canare precision coaxial cable. It is big coax, but the stranded center conductor and braided shielding ensure excellent flexibility and long life. The cable’s compliant nature makes it easy to handle and route.

[Feb 01, 2005] Makz AudioPhile Strength: Enormous soundstage, very realistic, natural sound, well balanced, very..umm..yes…musical… and, let’s not forget, it’s cheap as chips… Weakness: Needs a little extra investment in ferrite beads, that’s all Mainly because of the favourable reviews on this page, I decided to give this cable a go. What the heck, for this money I’ll try almost anything… Mine was customized to 1,5 meters length, so only the 75 Ohm BNC plugs are purple, the rest is black (which is a bit of a shame, really…I’ll take purple anytime over standard black). After two weeks of burn-in (mostly using the Purist Audio CD), I sat down and had a serious listen. The first thing that was apparent right from the off was the enormaous amount of soundstage that appeared. It was hard to imagine that all this space had been clodded up all that time in my Ensemble Digiflux that I used before. Bass seemed a little slimmer, but that turned out to be “more precise” and “uncoloured” rather than “less”. And the mids were a little lightweight. With the enormous soundstage however also came a feature that seems to be a “package deal” when it comes to stereo and depth imaging; a lot more detail, especially in the higher frequencies. So much more even, that I was wondering if the highs were not too bright. An audiophile friend of mine, who came by to have a listen, confirmed my deapest fear. There was too much high, it was too “fresh”. I decided to bring the cable over to him, to see how it compared to his Goldmund Lineal. And alas, same result. But that is not the end of this story. Hold on to your hats… My friend used two ferrite beads around the outer ends of his Goldmund (right behind the plugs), so I decided to see what this would do with the Canare. What happened was the most significant piece of proof that ferrite beads really work. The harshness was completely gone, and we were left with a holographic soundstage of humongous proportions. Our jaws still hurt from hitting the floor! Everything fell into place now. Bass was tighter, more precise, and more uncoloured, so that the natural sounds of the instrument (wood for acoustic bass) were finally audible. The mids had more “weight” or “substance” and vocals were frighteningly uncoloured. No pale or “hand in mouth” vocals anymore, no sir! And finally the highs… Man, this was some seriously good stuff we heard. We had a drummer present, and he could tell the brand of the cymbals, and he could even hear that they were too old and fairly beatten. No overpronounciation on the S-es, t’s or other short consonants, as a matter of fact, on some critical recordings, it was possible to make out, for the first time, the difference between S-es and t’s. In conclusion, we were startled. The Goldmund (original price approx. $600) was completely humiliated by this cheapster. And no, I have no shares in Canare, neither do I hold a grudge agains Goldmund. It is, by all means, a matter of facts. So keep in mind that this cable is manufactured without the ferrite beads.
