Photography Colin Dodgson
Colin Dodgson’s photography has a empyrean quality to it. From his sweeping natural landscapes, to his intimate studio portraiture and ambitious fashion imagery, his work often maximises the ethereal quality of dusk across a backdrop of rich colour, bathing his subjects in a warm, shadowy evening glow that invokes a serene calm.
Having exhibited his work in New York and contributed to the likes of Vogue, W, LOVE, T Magazine and, of course, venerable and beloved arbiter of fashion and culture i-D across his illustrious career, Colin is now presenting his first European exhibition, in Marseille. The work on display traverses from small to vast, clear to chaotic, bridging the ambitious scale of his work with the technicalities of analogue photography.

Entitled Safety, Service and Security, Colin sought to translate his life between California and London. “The works in this show relate to a life lived between two continents; the tipping point between modernism and romanticised-nostalgia, and the longing that arises therein.” More relatable are the ideas behind the show’s name itself, a feeling we all seek to find. “Safety, Service and Security alludes to a feeling. It’s the basic human need to feel safe and secure but to also have a purpose and feel useful to others.”
As we ask the industry heavyweight our quickfire Q&A, get to know the man behind the camera and take a closer look at the exhibition.

When do you feel at your most safe and secure?
In the ocean, at sunset, on a day where there’s no wind.
What picture are you most proud of within the exhibition, and why?
sometimes i just wish i was at home, 2018. A photo of my window in London.
When and where did you start your career in photography?
I started by making zines in New York City around 2008, after leaving photography school in California.
What was your big break?
My first exhibition in a Chinatown storefront in September 2009. I didn’t think anyone would come but I ended up getting commissioned to work for The New York Times.
What photograph has inspired you the most over the years, and why?
I’m more excited by paintings to be honest. Coming face to face with Botticelli’s Venus and La Primavera in Florence was deeply moving.
What’s the best thing about working as a photographer?
The freedom!
The worst?
Sometimes travelling all the time can be difficult, but there’s really nothing bad about being a photographer.
What’s your proudest achievement to date?
Being able to support myself doing what I love.
If you could collaborate with anyone in the industry, past or present, who would you collaborate with and what would you do?
Well they’re not in the industry but Kelly Slater and Ed Ruscha. We could all spend a day at the Surf Ranch in Lemoore.
What three rules do you live by?
I try not to live by too many rules.
If you weren’t working as a photographer, what would you be doing?
Either being a fisherman or surfing.
What advice would you give young photographers hoping to follow in your footsteps?
Trust yourself and don’t be distracted by people around you.

Photographer Colin Dodgson explores the tension of rest and restlessness
Photographer Colin Dodgson is revered for his work with brands such as Vivienne Westwood, HBA, and Simone Rocha, as well as magazines like Dazed. Recently, however, he has cast his eye to his new solo exhibition, titled Safety, Service and Security. It’s a project which, in many ways, has taken him a world away from the precipitate and structured operations of the fashion industry.
“When you shoot a campaign for a brand, it’s a very linear thought process and the end result is finite,” Dodgson explains. “With an exhibition, it’s merely a stopping point or a pause at that particular time, and the works themselves continue to live on and provide context and meaning to other works that you may have done in the past or might do in the future.”
At the exhibition in Marseilles, the photographer’s cyclical understanding of the artistic process is reflected in the photos themselves – images that Dodgson says explore “the tipping point between modernism and romanticised nostalgia, and the longing that arises therein.” With the distinguishing marks and tinctures of analogue film development, Dodgson’s work seems to exist between modernism and nostalgia, belonging to neither the then nor the now. The dazzling saturation of sunlight, a recurring motif in the photographer’s work, further places these photos at cryptic points in time. Are these moments in the middle of the day, in the first blinding rays of dawn, or in the crepuscular embers of twilight?

Colin Dodgson was born in 1984 in Southern California. He studied at Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara where his teachers recognized and supported his talent. After graduation, he moved to New York in 2006 and started to develop own photography style.
Colin Dodgson decided to organize his first exhibition in 2009. The show took place in the empty room on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. For this, he needed a lot of courage. Although the photographer was sure that nobody would come, the exhibition was very successful. He even got an offer to work with The New York Times. A couple years later, he had the second show in an apartment in Soho. Today, the photographer is situated between London and New York working on different projects in the fashion industry and making artistic photos.
His work was published in magazines such as Document Journal, Pop Magazine, British Vogue, American Vogue, Gentlewoman, I-D, T Magazine, Re-Edition Magazine, Dazed, Oyster and many others. He photographs for Gucci, DKNY, Vivienne Westwood, HBA, and Simone Rocha.

Brooks Institute – Doing It Right
However, after high school, he decided to attended the Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara, which is pretty much the west coast Harvard of photography. The talent he exuded from a simple 35mm film camera became quickly obvious to his teachers. So they provided him with some important connections. Hence, his taking of for that city on the hill,… New York, in 2006.
In a short time, Colin was shooting for various indie magazines like Arkitip and The Journal. But his personal work is what caught everyone’s attention. Weird, moody images of his friends that exemplified both youth and humor in an almost dreamlike environment. In 2009 he had the moxy to exhibit in an empty storefront on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, and in 2011 he held another exhibition in a friends Soho apartment!
From NY to London
Nowadays, he splits his time between New York and London and much of his work has been featured in Document Journal, W Magazine, British Vogue, T Magazine, Gentlewoman, I-D, Re-Edition Magazine, Love, Another, V Man, American Vogue, Dazed, Pop Magazine, Oyster and Arena Homme, among others. Along with his contemporaries, Harley Weir, Jamie Hawkesworth,…and others, he is noted for his analog documentation of youth and fashion.
His advertising campaigns have included Zara, Carven and Vivienne Westwood Red Label, DKNY and Simone Rocha. Most recently. As he noted in an interview, “I actually didn’t choose to work with film, rather it was the only medium I learned how to use. When I was in school it was the only medium that was taught. It was a very technical education.” That said, his soft tones and soft lighting style has probably benefited from film.
