There are many ways to build a commercial building or home these days, but tilt-up construction through Tilt Wall offers the greatest benefits.
This specialized process can be broken down into 6 distinct steps:
1. Site Preparation \u0026 Pouring the Foundation Slab
All required materials and equipment are gathered for the job. Next, the concrete floor slab is poured.
2. Forming of Tilt-Up Wall Panels and Adding Formliners
The crew assembles the panel forms on the floor slab. The panel forms serve as molds for the concrete. Each form provides the panel’s exact shape and size as well as openings for doors and windows
3. Panel Reinforcement and Installation of Lifting Inserts \u0026 Embeds
Up next, workers tie in the steel grid to reinforce bars into each form. This part of the process gives the panels additional structural integrity. Workers also install inserts and embeds, which will be used to lift the panels later
4. Pouring Concrete Tilt-Up Panels \u0026 Adding Insulation
Concrete is poured into the prepared forms to create the panels. Sandwich Insulation is also encased into each building panel. To give tilt-up structures true edge-to-edge insulation.
5. Lifting Concrete Panels in Place
The concrete panels are given time to solidify; The crew then connects the panels to a crane.

Deflection Walls or Crash walls

Deflection Walls or Crash walls are huge wall shaped reinforced concrete structures provided for the protection of piers and abutments in the vicinity of railway tracks. The purpose of deflection wall is to prevent head-on collision or impact from derailed trains on the primary structural support elements. It is also called a crash wall. A direct collision of a train on a non-frangible(primary) pier may lead to total collapse of bridge. Deflection wall helps to avoid catastrophic failures of bridges due to collision impact by derailed trains and minimise probability of injury to the passengers of derailed trains.

This structural system is mostly found in Australia. Australian bridge design code AS5100 mandates protection of piers near to rail lines. These walls are provided for Rail, Road and Pedestrian bridge piers if distance from face of pier to the centerline of existing or proposed tracks is less than 20m. However, this requirement can be ignored for piers within 10m to 20m range, if a risk assessment is carried out to determine the protection requirements and approved by authorities.

Dimensional Requirements of Deflection Walls

AS5100.2 2017, Clause 15.3.4 sets out dimensional and design requirements of deflection walls. A continuous deflection wall of height 3.6m above rail top shall be provided if the distance of pier face from the center line of existing or proposed tracks is less than 4m. If this distance is more than 4m, the deflection wall must project 2m above the top of rail. Additional dimensional requirements of deflection wall specified in the latest design code are as follows:

Design requirements of Deflection walls

Deflection walls are designed as continuous reinforced concrete walls. It must be ensured that the collision forces on the deflection walls are not transferred back to the primary structural element. When the pier face is within 10m from the centerline of track, following design loads shall be considered in the design of deflection wall. These loads shall be applied simultaneously at 2m above the rail top in the horizontal direction.

These loads shall be distributed over a length of 2m x0.5m deep. When piers are located between 10m to 20m from track, the protecting deflection wall shall be designed for a horizontal force of 1500kN applied horizontally 2m above rail in most onerous angle to the wall.

CHALLENGES

Adhering to state Department of Transportation requirements for construction near an existing, active interstate highway, several design and construction considerations helped shaped project development.

Concern over vibrations and over excavation near existing interstate piling encouraged helical deep foundation design.

Other design and installation challenges included low overhead clearance beneath the interstate bridge, dictating a maximum pile length to allow for access, along with the need for a small construction footprint to ensure no disruption to the everyday operations of both the interstate highway and the railway.

WHAT WE DID

Focused on safe design and construction, TorcSill’s Engineering TEAM developed a “transition” pile to resist high lateral loading while maintaining constructability and significantly reducing the cost of steel used for the foundation. The lead section (helix-flighted section) of the pile was designed as a medium diameter pile, transitioning to a large-diameter section for the top 15 feet.

Each section of the 60-feet pile was designed at 15 feet to ensure adequate access for the installation equipment.

Upon design approval, TorcSill’s Construction Services TEAM conducted load tests to verify pile capacities, before providing survey services to precisely locate each pile placement location.

SOLUTION

The engineered, manufactured, load tested, surveyed and installed Crash Wall Project met all the conditions placed upon the TorcSill TEAM. At completion, 103 transition piles were installed to support an important infrastructure safety project, effectively eliminating vibrations typically associated with driven piles and over excavation and large construction footprint concerns associated with other piling solutions.
