Season 2

For the Love of Ray J was a dating show on VH1 that featured hip hop singer Ray J.[1][2][3] The program had a format similar to Flavor of Love, I Love New York, and Rock of Love.[4] One source notes that it “will be produced by the same geniuses” as those shows, 51 Minds.[5] In reference to the series, Ray J said:

I’ve been in this game a long time… I’ve been with a lot of women but I’m ready to get out. I want to do this show to find a ride or die chick, a chick that makes me want to get out of the game.[6]

The show, which premiered on February 2, 2009, followed Ray J and his entourage of female suitors to clubs in Los Angeles, to Las Vegas where they partied with his friends, and to Ray’s childhood home where they met his family and older sister Brandy Norwood.

According to one commentator, the concept of the show involves pampering the contestants with “upscale trips throughout the series” and “Ray J’s so in love that he’s already given participating girls names like Cashmere, Unique and Hot Cocoa.”[7][8]

On June 10, 2009, Cocktail announced on her MySpace page that she and Ray were no longer a couple, and had “not been together for a while now.”[31] Two days later, she alleged in an interview that Ray J had hurt her by lying to her about whether there would be a second season of the show, and that the “breaking point” came on tour when she realized that he was still “hooking up” with other girls, but that’s when Ray J realized that she was serious about the relationship he was honest with her and told her that it was “not going to work out.”[32][33]

“It Was A Horrible Experience” Danger From “The Love of Ray J” Explains How The Show Affected Her Life

MadameNoire Featured Video

We really haven’t seen or heard from her since then. That’s because three years after the show aired, Danger, whose given name was Monica Leon, took a nine-year break from the industry to raise her daughter. Since then, she’s gotten married and had another child. And during the pandemic, she took some time off to be a stay-at-home mom.

In her first interview in nine years, she spoke with Storm Monroe about her experience on the reality show, how she perceived Ray J at the time and how being a reality star in her early twenties was a very bad experience for her.

Was she attracted to Ray J

He was very attractive before I got to know him. He’s a good looking guy, he’s successful, he seemed like a nice person, why not? I didn’t go on the show to fall in love with him. I wanted to do something in the entertainment industry. I wanted to do some acting, some modeling. But I did kind of develop feelings for him but it was short lived.

Was Ray J the same on and off camera

Honestly, I didn’t really get to know him. We were shooting for a month, we didn’t really have any alone time together. There was a whole bunch of crazy stuff going on. Then after we stopped shooting, I didn’t hang out with him. I didn’t spend any time with him at all. I was in a relationship right after the show.

Was it true that she dated Nick Cannon’s brother?

Yeah. We have a child together. It’s his half-brother.

How friends and family reacted to her being on the show?

I think they were as supportive as they could be. But after filming, as far as my family, it was not great. It was really bad for everybody. They didn’t enjoy the negative press that I got, the online shaming that I got. It made them look bad. My parents didn’t handle it very well. It was an embarrassment No one really enjoyed being in the spotlight. It was a bunch of horrible things that they were saying. It didn’t go well. It wasn’t good for my life.

And you have to think about it, I was really young. I was 22. I didn’t know how to handle press or how to find the right manager, who wasn’t going to take advantage of me. People would say, ‘Hey I can get Danger to come to your club.’ And they didn’t even know me. So I was getting a bad reputation for taking people’s money.

There was a ton of blood-sucking activities going on and it left a bad taste in my mouth.

Being famous with no money

I couldn’t really go anywhere without being mobbed, which wasn’t good for my family or my relationship. And what people don’t know about reality shows is that, they don’t really pay you. Ray J made money but we didn’t make money like that. It was a very small amount. I got paid for appearances but I would have to travel all over the country to make that money. It was all busted opportunities with people who just wanted to take advantage of me.

The inspiration behind the tattoo

Do you want the PG version or the real version? I wanted to make myself uglier. I thought I would have more of a normal life if people were afraid of me or found me to be less attractive. It worked against me. It made people more drawn to me and wanting to talk to me.

Whether she would ever have it removed

I cover it up with makeup all the time. I did get a consultation to get it removed but since I’m a woman of color, the pigmentation could be lighter than the rest of my face. So I decided that’s really not worth it. But I still like it. It’s a part of me. It’s so engrained in who I am at this point in my life. Maybe down the line I might get it removed but I love it so I don’t think I’ll be doing that any time soon.

The experience overall

It really hindered me more than it helped me. There were a few good things that came from it but overwhelmingly, it was a horrible experience. It really just made me give up on my dreams.

But I wouldn’t do anything differently, it was all a means to an end. Now, I’m at a place where I’m happy. But it took 33 years for me to get her.

Now, Danger has a newly launched YouTube channel where she discusses, makeup, skincare and extreme cleaning and mommying. You can follow her at A Dangerous Life. In one of her earlier videos, she shared that being on the show even affected her employment as she would get fired once her employers Googled her.

Remember That Time Tom Green Found Out That Danger Smashed Ray J’s Homie?

Let’s take a walk back in time… a time when VH1 was already in the midst of bringing back old(er) celebrities to try their hands at finding love… by throwing them onto a reality TV show. A few years after porn company Vivid Entertainment acquired and released the sex tape seen ’round the world, VH1 decided to try and do what they did for Flavor Flav and Bret Michaels and find some love for Ray J.

This post isn’t a breakdown of the first season of For the Love of Ray J (although some might be wondering what exactly happened to the winner, Joanna “Cocktail” Hernandez); this is a look at one particular episode (Episode 9 of Season 1 for those of you looking for it on the Internets) that featured one member of Ray J’s squad (which, for some reason, included both Warren G and Tom Green) informing him that he did, in fact, smash Danger, the contestant who had a troubled past and a tiger on her face.

We don’t get much of the back story (aside from the fact that Danger did in fact smash the homie), but surprisingly, it’s Tom Green (who does have a love and appreciation for hip-hop that turned into him actually recording some music years ago) and NOT Warren G (of “Regulate” fame) getting a chant of “DANGER! SHE SMASHED THE HOMIE!” going, to which the entire squad obviously had to partake in.

Aside from that memorable moment, you get the solo “DANGER! She smaaaaaaaashed the homie!” line from Ray J, which is hilarious and soundbite-worthy in its own right.

Ultimately, this didn’t even cause Danger to be eliminated from the show (she ended up making it to the final three but then leaving for personal reasons), but it did turn into a thing… so much so that during Season 2 of For the Love of Ray J, Ray J found out that ANOTHER one of his homies smashed a contestant:

This time, it was only Ray J chanting about Luscious smashing the homey… twice.

The morale of the story is either one of the two following points:

Don’t bring your significant other around the homies, or Bring your significant other around the homies EARLY, so you can find out if one of them had previously smashed her.

You’ll be doing yourself a huge favor.

For the Love of Ray J

For the Love of Ray J is a dating show on VH1 featuring hip hop singer Ray J.[1][2][3] The program has a format similar to Flavor of Love, I Love New York, and Rock of Love.[4] In reference to the series, Ray J said:

I’ve been in this game a long time… I’ve been with a lot of women but I’m ready to get out. I want to do this show to find a ride or die chick, a chick that makes me want to get out of the game.[5]

The show ended right before the spin-off Family Business which stars Ray and his sister Brandy. Ray J called the show “a learning experience.”

It was just a learning experience for me to just let it happen naturally, absolutely.[6]

Season 1 [ edit ]

The show, which premiered on February 2, 2009, follows Ray J and a group of 14 female contestants. The winner was Cocktail (Joanna Hernandez).

Season 2 [ edit ]

A second season premiered on November 2, 2009, with a group of 19 female contestants.[7] The winner was 32 year-old Mz. Berry (Connie Deveaux).

Danger From For The Love Of Ray J Reveals Experience On Show Negatively Affected Her Life

Ray J has been a staple in reality TV long before his ventures with Zeus. Around a decade ago, the little brother of singer Brandy broke out on the reality TV scene with a dating show.

The series was responsible for a few iconic pop culture moments but the girls from the show quickly faded back into normalcy except one — Danger. She actually was one of the most popular contestants and the show would follow her everywhere for years after.

Unfortunately, this isn’t a success story for the woman whose real name is Monica Leon. She recently opened up about how the show negatively impacted her life.

The notoriety she gained didn’t translate into a thriving career — instead, infamy followed her everywhere and opportunities were slim.

She explained to Madame Noire: ‘I couldn’t really go anywhere without being mobbed, which wasn’t good for my family or my relationship. And what people don’t know about reality shows is that, they don’t really pay you. Ray J made money but we didn’t make money like that. It was a very small amount. To make things even worse, it was harder for her family.

‘They didn’t enjoy the negative press that I got, the online shaming that I got. It made them look bad. My parents didn’t handle it very well. It was an embarrassment No one really enjoyed being in the spotlight. It was a bunch of horrible things that they were saying. It didn’t go well. It wasn’t good for my life.’

Danger from For the Love of Ray J is a ex- hooker

I was reading her blog on myspace and came across this:Tell the Truth & Shame the DevilCurrent mood: focusedHipHopRX.com has learned that Monica Leon aka Danger, one of the cast members of VH1’s For The Love Of Ray J (the one with the tattoo on her face), has reportedly revealed to Core DJ’s Hutch Daddy Dolla of Nappy Boy Radio that, in her past life, she was a prostitute. After first making the blog headlines for her nude provocative photos, contestant ‘Danger’ of For the Love of Ray J, Monica Leon, is now making news this week when she “alleged” that she has become pregnant with Ray J’s child.Monica reportedly tells The National Enquirer that she became pregnant after a series of unprotected sexual encounters with Ray J.“I was locked in a mansion with him and 13 girls from October until the end of December. Toward the end of the first week of filming, we made love for the first time – and we slept together every night after that.”Danger reveals, in her interview with Hutch Daddy Dolla, more of what happened behind the scenes of “For The Love Of Ray J” and goes into about some of the behind the scenes activities of the VH1 show, not showing on TV:“He kissed girls, you know, there was like a few days that we were at the house before that even happened. There was nights that weren’t like documented, they didn’t see all the girls trying to just basically rape him [Ray J],” revealed Danger.Danger also somewhat defended Ray J’s character breaking a stereotype that she says the show doesn’t really capture of him.“We all just have this image of Ray J that he’s just a womanizer and just will like have sex with anything that walks, but he was really like.. trying to talk to them. It’s so funny, because it doesn’t really show that… but he’s really respectful and really wanted to get to know each woman. He really was trying to get to know everybody.”Danger then revealed more about the show not seen on TV.In one scene on the show, one of the 14 girls on the show named Chardonnay did a split for Ray J that according to Danger sparked a banana split love scene not shown on tv. Danger then ’spills the beans’ about contestant Stilts who she says did porn and possibly produced it also.Following that, Danger reveals more about herself and own wild side and why she started on her path of doing nude photos and says that “regardless of their moral upbringing,” there are “alot of young women and young men” that go through what she’s been through.“Basically when I dropped out of school when I was 19, I was going through alot of different things,” Danger stated. “I was trying to find myself. I wanted to do theater, you know I wanted to get back into modeling, I wanted to do this and that, but as a girl in the Bay area who’s 5 [foot] 3 [inches], there’s not very many opportunities out there for modeling,” she adds.“I’m not this stick figure, I have a body… basically, I need some money, and I was like to the point of – you know what! – f-ck my dad, f-ck my mom, f-ck my family, f-ck my friends, I’ma just do my own thing… I got to a really selfish point in my life that I’m really not proud of — but yeah, I experienced that, alot of young women and young men go through that — where they just want to just be on their own – regardless of their moral upbringing. I have great parents, I have a great father, I have a great mother, I have a strong family. But I just got to the point where I just – was so mad.. everybody wants to keep me, because of the way I look, I was like let me just take advantage of that, and make as much as I can as fast as I can and not give a f-ck about anything else, and that’s basically what I did, that’s what I went through,” Danger revealed.Although Danger says she did not go as far as doing porn, she does go on to open up about her past life as a stripper, AND a prostitute.“I have done pictures, I’ve been an exotic dancer and I’ve also done some prostitution and that’s something that I really didn’t want to just talk about right away cause it’s a scary scary thing, it has such a negative connotation to it. But I was a prostitute for about two and half years, and you know I was making alot of money, I had all this cash, shopping… all this shit, you know, nice car, nice place, but it didn’t make me happy,” Danger revealed about her past life. When asked was she a “high priced” prostitute or “low budget” prostitute, Danger had this to say:“I sucked d-ck for free, and I’ve gotten 10 grand for it, let’s leave it at that.”Ending the interview, Danger goes more into the things she’s planning and speaks about a young lady whom was involved with drugs and prostitution which Danger took under her care. She says that she received a call that the young lady, who eventually stole from her and ran-away, may now have committed suicide and she speaks about how she plans to help girls and young women who’s been through what she’s been through.Check out the full interview with “Danger” and Hot 97.3’s afternoon personality Hutch Daddy Dolla of T-Pain’s Nappy Boy Radio and The Core DJs.Shout outs to Hutch Daddy Dolla and Offdaglass.net.
