The Gas Buster deflects much of that gas, along with the oil and grit, away from your face and towards the right side of the weapon. I run a Gas Buster on all of my AR-15s. And I operate with a suppressor 99.99% of the time. The Gas Buster is a no-brainer.

What does an upgraded charging handle do?

An updated charging handle, such as an extended latch charging handle, enables faster, surer manual cycling, even in the dark, with gloves, and with attachments “in the way.” One more thing to note is that some upgraded charging handles (like the MCS 5.56/.

What should I look for in a charging handle?

When choosing what charging handle is right for you, the main thing to keep in mind is to consider the intended use for your firearm. If you want a good ambidextrous, high-value option for a charging handle – Radian Raptor AR-15 charging handle is a good choice.

Does Buster have charging handle?

Do It Yourself Gas Busting Charging Handle [2009-09-29]

Do It Yourself Gas Busting Charging Handle [2009-09-29]

(Originally written in 2003 / 2004 – updated 09-29-2009)

I learned this technique close to a decade ago on an online forum. I don’t recall who gave me the information, unfortunately I can’t give credit where credit is due. I wrote the following review a few years later because I had gotten so many questions about the purpose of the “red stuff” on my charging handle.

Over the years many guys have asked me what the “red stuff” is in the gap on the charging handles closest to the upper receiver.

If you look at the charging handle on an AR15 from the top of the gun you will notice that there is a half circle shaped gap where the charging handle fits up agains the upper receiver.

If you look at this same area from the side, you will notice that there is a space between the charging handle and the upper receiver. This is where a majority of excess lube, gases, and debris escape out of the upper receiver and are directed into the shooters face.

By filling the half circle gap on the charging handle with RTV silicone you can make a cheap and very effective “gas buster” for your charging handle, and this prevents lube, gases, and debris from being blown back into your face.

Step #1

Prep the charging handle. Clean the half circle shaped area on the charging handle with Acetone and wipe dry.

Step #2

Get a tube of Permatex High-Temp RTV Silicone Gasket Makter #26B (can be found in the automotive section at Wal-Mart. It comes in a red tube and costs $2.97). When I first started using this technique I was only able to locate red RTV Silicon, it also comes in black. I use red RTV Silicon in the pictures below so that people reading this article could easily see what was silicon (red) and what was part of the carbine (black).

Looking at the charging handle from the top you will notice a gap that looks like a “C” or half circle. Ensure that the charging handle is locked in the forward position.

To make the gas buster modification, I filled in this gap between the upper receiver and the higher portion of the charging handle with the High-Temp RTV Silicone, using a plastic knife to level out the silicone and remove any excess.

Step #3

Let the RTV Silicone dry over night, once the RTV Silicone is applied to the charging handle, DO NOT move the charging handle until the RTV Silicone has cured.

After the RTV cures, take a knife and slide the blade between the RTV and the upper receiver to loosen it up a bit. Then pull the charging handle back slowly, if it’s still sticking to the upper receiver, use the blade of the knife to slowly and gently pull the RTV away from the upper receiver. You want the RTV Silicone to stick to the charging handle, not the upper receiver.

The RTV Silicone makes a perfect seal, nothing can excape from the upper receiver in the area of the charging handle.

The RTV makes a perfect seal around the upper receiver, it’s much cheaper than a $90 charging handle.

Apply the RTV Silicon while the charging handle and bolt are both in the forward position:

M84 Gas Buster® Charging handle W/ combat latch

The Gas Buster® charging handle with Combat latch is a safety device with ergonomic design that diverts harmful gases, oil and dirt particles away from the shooter. This is a PRi Patented product. Safety approved & used by the US Marine corps. This product doesn’t work as well with left hand shooters because of the gas porting properties but works better than a standard charging Handle. Handle is constructed of T6 7075 hard coat anodized aluminum and is available with 2 colors; black and FDE.

PRI Gas Buster Charging Handle with Combat Latch

The Precision Reflex Gas Buster Charging Handle is first and foremost a high quality upgrade over the typical AR-15 charging handle. It is a worthwhile investment to any build. Where it really shines of course is to deflect gas and grit away from your face when running a suppressor. A suppressor creates additional gas blowback. The Gas Buster deflects much of that gas, along with the oil and grit, away from your face and towards the right side of the weapon. I run a Gas Buster on all of my AR-15s. And I operate with a suppressor 99.99% of the time. The Gas Buster is a no-brainer.

PRI Gas Buster v Mil Spec

The photo above shows the PRI Gas Buster at top along with a standard charging handle on bottom. It is fairly obvious that the Gas Buster is more substantial.

The Gas Buster Charging Handle is available in several configurations including a choice of latches and colors. Personally, I usually install the Combat Latch (which is pictured above). Reason being is that it is exceptionally easy to manipulate.

PRI Gas Buster Combat Latch

The photograph above is of my 6.8 SPC SBR built around an 11.3″ Wilson Combat stainless match barrel. Optics are a FLIR thermal at night along with a Trijicon 1-6 during the day. As you can see, the Trijicon is aligned to the rear of the upper receiver. A standard charging handle is sometimes awkward to grab hold of under the scope. The Combat Latch is a superior upgrade and is, well, awesome.

PRI Gas Buster Charging Handle

PRI Gas Buster Charging Handle

The only negative I can think of is that the Gas Buster is not ideal for left-handed shooters because the gas is diverted to the right. Probably still better than standard though if shooting suppressed.

Upgrading Your AR 15’s Charging Handle: When and Why You Should Do It

What’s the first thing you do when you pick up a firearm and the action is closed? Naturally, you open it to ensure that the firearm is clear, before inspecting it, disassembling it, cleaning it, or otherwise. It’s just good, responsible firearm handling acumen. For most of us, it’s second nature.

With repeaters and break-action firearms, this is easy enough. These firearms have levers, slides, bolts, or pumps that make it easy and intuitive to open or rack the action back. The very nature of these firearms makes it necessary for these features to be readily manipulable. A lever is easy to access, with either hand, with gloves on, for example; the support hand naturally rests on the forend of a pump or slide action rifle or shotgun.

But what about autoloaders? Let’s take a closer look.

The Purpose of the AR 15’s Charging Handle

A firearm like an AR 15, which is an autoloader, lacks a slide or a lever. Instead, you can manipulate the action, racking it back, by pulling on the charging handle. This is the external protrusion from the bolt that makes it possible for you to manually cycle the action.

Also known as the cocking handle or bolt handle, the AR 15 charging handle is not only vital for the purposes of visual inspection and clearing a weapon. It is also your lifeline if the firearm jams, fails to set properly when the bolt is closed, or experiences some other failure of the action.

Manually cycling the action by way of the AR 15 charging handle is the only way to manually reset the hammer and striker, extract a cartridge that failed to extract or eject, or otherwise to

clear a jam.

It may not be a flashy or an exciting component of the platform, but it is one of the most utilitarian, by far. It, more than almost any other feature of the firearm (except perhaps the trigger and stock) affects the ergonomics of the rifle.

Unfortunately, some rifles come with small, inconveniently located charging handles that are difficult to find intuitively. Add large optics, brass catchers, or other sizeable attachments to the rail over your receiver and it can be even more difficult to find the charging handle instinctively, especially in the dark, or when you’re wearing heavy gloves.

Now, to a point, training with your weapon will make it second nature – but there are still some ways you can improve the handling of your weapon, as well as your proficiency with it, even with a move as simple as upgrading your AR 15 charging handle.

Advantages of Upgrading an AR 15 Charging Handle

First, let’s just talk about mil-spec and debunk a few things. Mil-spec does not automatically mean better – all it means is that it has been produced in accordance with stringent military specifications.

Recall that mil-spec BCGs are given a phosphate finish. It’s good enough, reliable, and standard for the military, but other BCGs with nitride and nickel boron finishes are harder, more corrosion-resistant, and exhibit superior permanent dry lubricity.

In that respect, many non-mil-spec bolt carrier groups are “better,” in multiple ways, than mil-spec, phosphate models. The same can be said of mil-spec AR 15 charging handles.

Yes, mil-spec charging handles are made from tough, corrosion-resistant T6 aluminum. They work, for sure, but they’re not ambidextrous and they have pretty small latches. This makes them difficult for left-handed shooters to manipulate, hard to find in the dark, and difficult to access in the cold or with large gloves.

Naturally, the shooters who will see the greatest advantages from swapping out their charging handles are southpaws. It can be downright difficult, at least frustrating, to attempt to manipulate a mil-spec charging handle for some left-handed shooters. Those models are designed for right-handed shooters, and that’s all there is to it. An ambidextrous (ambi) charging handle will not just serve the needs of left-handed shooters, but right-handed shooters as well.

But lefties are not the only ones who will profit from an upgrade to the AR-15 charging handle. There are numerous reasons why some hunters or sport shooters could benefit from larger models with more adequate grips.

For one thing, if you’re a competition shooter or a hunter, then there’s a good likelihood that you spend a lot of time outside in the winter. It’s hard enough getting to the charging handle to clear or cycle a weapon with cold, stiff, bare hands, and nearly impossible with bulky gloves. A larger charging handle will give you much more purchase and make it a lot easier to feel what you’re doing, without necessarily needing to look down at your weapon.

Now let’s talk about hunters. It’s not legal or even common to hunt with semi-autos in many states, but where it is, the AR 15 is common. It’s America’s Rifle for a reason.

Many who hunt with sporting rifles like these prefer the rifle’s maneuverability, modularity, and ability to make quick follow-up shots. Here’s something else – many who hunt with these rifles, hunt with them in the dark for game such as feral hogs or coyotes.

Game like hogs are wily, fast, and aggressive. They can be downright dangerous, making rapid follow-up shot capabilities an imperative. It also means the hunter must be able to confidently handle, fire, cycle, and clear his or her weapon without any hiccups.

Finding the small latch of a mil-spec charging handle can be very difficult in the dark, especially if the rifle is encumbered with large, low-light optics. An updated charging handle, such as an extended latch charging handle, enables faster, surer manual cycling, even in the dark, with gloves, and with attachments “in the way.”

One more thing to note is that some upgraded charging handles (like the MCS 5.56/.223 Ambidextrous Charging Handle, pictured above) also help to redirect ported gasses from rifles with short barrels or suppressors, greatly improving the shooter’s experience. Instead of being vented right in front of the shooter’s face, these charging handles help to redirect gasses forward, away from the shooter.

What it boils down to is easier access to the charging handle, even in the dark, when there are attachments in the way, or when wearing thick or bulky gloves – not to mention that some models also allow for ambidextrous use.

HOW TO CHOOSE AR-15 CHARGING HANDLE

Every part of an AR-15 rifle can be upgraded to an extreme degree. And the easiest and most affordable way to upgrade your AR-15 is to change a charging handle for a new one.

And of course, like every other AR-15 part, you have millions of options to choose from and that can be a little overwhelming. To help you out a little bit, we gathered the information that might help you to choose the right AR-15 charging handle for your needs.

An upgraded AR-15 charging handle can significantly improve your shooting performance in many ways. What are they? Well, the upgraded charging handle will:

– Enable the shooter to get a better grip on the handle;

– Allow the shooter to get a better grip angle;

– Accommodate a glove hand;

– Deflect gas, oil and dirt from the face when shooting.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN AN AR-15 CHARGING HANDLE?

There three common features to consider when looking for a custom AR-15 charging handle.

AMBIDEXTROUS HANDLES – One of the main reasons why gun owners would upgrade a handle is if they are lefties. Most of the stock charging handles only come as right-handed pull-backs. But nowadays the market offers lots of affordable, high-quality ambidextrous AR-15 charging handles that can be used with equal proficiency with either hand. Ambidextrous charging handles give you a great level of convenience regarding the accessibility of your rifle.

EXTENDED LATCHES – A charging handle with an extended latch is a godsend when you are running an optic that comes close to the rear of your rifle. It will also make it easier for the shooter to engage the charging handle in areas where they might not be using their bare hands. To put it in another way, an extended latch gives you plenty of real estate to grip and rip as the situation demands.

GAS BUSTER SYSTEM – This feature is great when a shooter is using a suppressor or when shooting rimfire AR-15s. The gas buster version of the charging handle is designed to redirect gas blow-back away from the shooter’s face when firing.

WHY INVESTING IN A QUALITY AR-15 CHARGING HANDLE?

Smooth Firing Cycles

Fire off as many follow-up shots as possible and have a reliable rifle all the time. Custom AR-15 charging handle will provide you with the ability to fire your shots with smooth cycling.

Long-Lasting Quality

Custom AR-15 charging handle will last you a long time and provide you with the best performance and experience because it’s made from the best quality material such as 7075 T6 aluminum.

Ease of Use

Most high-quality AR-15 charging handles will not discriminate against you, whether you are a right-handed or left-handed shooter, meaning you can release the latch from either side, with either hand.

All that mentioned above add great functionality to your rifle.

WHAT IS THE BEST AR-15 CHARGING HANDLE?

There is no right answer here. When choosing what charging handle is right for you, the main thing to keep in mind is to consider the intended use for your firearm.

To start with you can pay attention to the following AR-15 charging handles:

One thing they don’t note in those instructions is that you need to be very sure to apply something to the upper receiver, both the rear and the inside, to keep the Permatex (or whatever else you use) from sticking to it. Almost anything will work; CLP, wax, Remoil…just make sure that while the CH is as naked as possible, the upper is as well dressed as it can be. AR15 Charging handle mod for suppressed rifle

While there are many products offering “fixes” for common problems on the market in this- the platinum age of Modern Sporting Rifles- many times a do-it-yourself approach is preferred. One such problem is that many rifles are a bit over gassed in an attempt to provide the system more energy to cycle thorough dirt and debris. With the addition of a suppressor, the amount of gas near the shooters face goes up significantly, especially through the charging handle slot of the receiver.

In this video by YouTube channel Guns and Tactics, Dave Timm covers one of the simplest (and best known) solutions for suppressed blowback. Commonly called the “RTV trick” or the “DIY Gasbuster” (after a commercial product for the same problem and carrying the same name), this involves the judicious application of RTV silicone (or similar) to block the most significant path of gas towards the shooter’s face.
