Do Kwon, the co-founder of Terraform Labs, said that he was “devastated” by last month’s collapse of the TerraUSD (UST) stablecoin and its sister token LUNA, expressing his hope that thousands of investors who have been affected by the Terra ecosystem’s implosion are “taking care of themselves.”
Kwon also claimed that he had personally lost nearly all his net worth in Terra’s crash, while also hitting back at claims that the project was a “fraud.”
“I made confident bets and made confident statements on behalf of UST because I believed in its resilience and its value proposition,” Kwon said in a recent interview with The Wall Street Journal. ”I’ve since lost these bets, but my actions 100% match my words. Kwon’s wife requested emergency protection after the incident on Thursday evening, police in Seoul’s Seongdong-gu district told Forkast. She has subsequently been provided with security, they added.
An unidentified individual allegedly entered the apartment complex located in Seongsu-dong after waiting for a resident to open the gate with a code, Kwon’s wife alleged. The individual then rang the doorbell and knocked on the door to Kwon’s home, she added. After she answered the door, the individual reportedly asked if Kwon was available and left when she answered in the negative, Kwon’s wife alleged.
The wife reportedly told the police that the location of their private residence has been made public after Kwon’s crypto business started going awry. The Asia Pacific headquarters of Terraform Labs is in Singapore, according to its LinkedIn page.
The police told Forkast on Friday that they were still trying to trace the individual on possible charges of breaking and entering. This pursuit is based on what has been alleged, police say, though it could not be immediately ascertained if the individual had invested in any of Kwon’s beleaguered cryptocurrency initiatives.

The Firm
The development comes as Kwon finds himself embroiled in controversial allegations following what some media have called the “Lehman Brothers of crypto.” Terraform Lab’s TerraUSD (UST) lost its U.S. dollar peg earlier this week and slumped to US$0.04 on Friday morning Hong Kong time, according to CoinGecko. The algorithm-based stablecoin has lost some US$16.6 billion in market capitalization.
The firm sought to peg the UST against the greenback by backing it against LUNA, a proprietary token.
But LUNA’s supply rose 20-fold in four days through Thursday, according to analysis by The Block’s Tim Copeland. The supply has since ballooned to 6.91 trillion from 775.69 billion on May 10, according to data from Terrascope, a tool built to track the Terra Money ecosystem.
The supply increased as holders of the UST redeemed the stablecoin for LUNA to sell the latter on the open market. This increased the supply of the token, pushing the price of the token further down. In turn, this created a vicious cycle as UST holders had to redeem for even more LUNA than earlier.

LUNA now trades at US$0.037, down 100% in the last seven days, according to Terrascope data. It had touched an all-time high of US$116.29 about a month earlier.
Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, on Friday said it will delist a number of trading pairs linked to UST and LUNA, accelerating the downfall of Terraform-LUNA. The debacle has led to cascading turmoil in the cryptocurrency market, already browbeaten by the selloff in risk assets. Bitcoin dipped below US$27,000 on Thursday before recovering to above the US$30,000 mark on late Friday Hong Kong time.

Kwon completed high school at Daewon Foreign Language High School and studied computer science at Stanford University, graduating in June 2015.[11][12] He worked as an engineer at Apple and Microsoft for three months each.[13][11] Afterwards, he returned to South Korea to start a company in September 2015.[14]
Former Terra employees have claimed that Kwon was also the founder of another failed stablecoin project called Basis Cash, which got its inspiration from a different stablecoin project called Basis (formerly Basecoin), an Ethereum based token. One of Terra’s main features was TerraUSD (UST), which is a so-called algorithmic stablecoin that is meant to maintain a 1:1 peg with the US dollar.[17] UST stablecoins were not backed by US dollars; instead, UST was designed to maintain its peg through a complex model called a “burn and mint equilibrium”. This method uses a two-token system, whereby one token is supposed to remain stable (UST) while the other token (LUNA) is meant to absorb volatility.[18] Investors who deposited UST in “Anchor Protocol” were receiving roughly 19% yield that was paid out from Terra’s reserves.[19] Due to such a high-yielding mechanism of the “Anchor Protocol”, some critics raised concerns that Kwon’s stablecoin model could function like a “ginormous Ponzi scheme”.[20][21][22][23][24][25][26]
In response to British economist Frances Coppola and others who criticised his “algorithmic stablecoin” model, Kwon repeatedly mocked them by calling them “poor” and “cockroaches”.[27][28][29] He has also stated that he finds “entertainment in watching companies (other cryptocurrency firms) die” during a live interview with Alexandra Botez.[27][30] When asked via Twitter by concerned investors about where the capital for the yield reserves of the “Anchor Protocol” was coming from, Do Kwon responded, “Your mom, obviously”.[30]
