Why Citroen’s DS6 WR SUV should come to Europe
I must have asked four different Citroen executives at the Beijing motor show why its new DS6 WR SUV was not scheduled to come to the UK any time soon. It just didn’t make sense to me. Unlike conventional large family cars, SUVs are flying out showrooms and their growth shows little sign of abating.
The DS6 looks good and would be a timely addition to Citroen’s fledgling DS brand, especially after the lukewarm reception granted the stiff-riding DS5.
But it’s not coming even to Europe, let alone the UK and the reasons given which stretched from Citroen not being perceived as an SUV brand in the UK to the fact that the DS6 WR is fitted with a petrol engine. None of the explanations was particularly convincing.
Porsche was hardly an SUV brand before the Porsche Cayenne, a car which has been its bestseller ever since it’s introduction over a decade. And one by one almost every major brand has introduced SUVs into the UK whether they were renowned for them or not, because in economic terms they have represented as close a certain sales success as exists in the UK right now.
As for the petrol engine in the car shown at the Beijing show, that didn’t wash at all: the DS6 is based on the DS5 platform into which PSA’s diesel engines slot very nicely and, in hybrid form even provide drive to the rear axle so the car could have four wheel drive too.
The last person I asked was Frederic Banzet, CEO of the Citroen brand. His opening bid was to suggest that the cost of transporting the cars from China where they are built to Europe. But then, thankfully, he was rather more forthcoming. “Part of our problem in the past is we have been far too dependent on Europe. We have to focus on producing European cars for Europe and Chinese cars for China. It is true that in an ideal world we would have the DS6 WR on sale in Europe, but we have to progress our recovery plan first.” That plan if successful will see PSA returned to profitability in 2016.
But I think there is something else going on here too. Part of that recovery plan involved selling 14 per cent of PSA to the French Government and 14 per cent to state-owned Dongfeng. Whether they like it or not, Citroen knows that the recovery depends not only on Chinese sales, but Chinese money too. Increasingly its eyes are turning eastwards and quite what French workers, French unions and French customers will make of this remains to be seen.

U nter the label DS, which will be used in the future for to expand its own brand, Citroën wants to hunt for premium customers on the Chinese market. The youngest offspring is the DS6 WR, which presents the series model derived from the previous Wild Rubis study.
DS6 WR goes for a luxury SUV
The DS6 WR is 4.55 meters long, 1 , 86 meters wide and 1.61 meters high. Its wheelbase is 2.73 meters. With these key data, the DS6 WR-SUV should offer a spacious interior and thus the best conditions to pamper the targeted premium customers.
The face of the DS6 WR is characterized by the typical chrome-plated DS radiator grille, its extensions pull yourself up into the headlights. A second radiator throat and an apron with an underrun protection element opens up underneath. The flanks are characterized by wide, flared wheel arches, 19-inch light alloy wheels and aluminum applications on the sills. An underrun protection element at the rear also signals the robust character. A roof rail made of aluminum rounds off the appearance of the DS6 WR.
DS6 WR with 160 or 200 HP
The DS6 WR is powered by either a 160 or 200 hp 1.6 liter turbo gasoline engine. The drive torque flows exclusively via a six-speed automatic transmission to the front wheels, and a multi-stage, controllable traction system should ensure optimal traction.
The DS6 WR is to be manufactured in China at the Shenzhen location. The market launch in China is planned for the end of 2014. Prices were not mentioned.

The premium DS brand model is largely inspired from the DS5. It retains the “watch strap” seats and features subtle use of brushed aluminum trim.
Inspired by the Wild Ruby prototype and designed Citroën’s Shanghai stylists, the DS 6WR SUV is based on the platform common to the DS5 and the DS5 LS and will be produced at their factory in Shenzhen. It will be released in the fall solely for Chinese market.
With this third model produced on Chinese soil, the French brand, which now has 60 DS showrooms in the country, hopes that the DS 6WR SUV will be the incentive for continued sales growth there.

The DS 6 is a subcompact luxury crossover SUV designed by the French automaker DS Automobiles specifically for the market in Asia. It was the second model of DS, then a sub brand, to not feature the Citroën logo, following the launch of the DS 5LS earlier in 2014. First announced to the public in April 2014 as the DS 6WR,[1] it was released for sale in the autumn of 2014.[2]
It is powered by a four-cylinder 1.6 litre (1598 cc) petrol engine, producing 200 PS (147 kW; 197 bhp) at 5800 rpm and 275 N⋅m (203 lb⋅ft) torque at 1700 to 4500 rpm. It is claimed to accelerate from 0–100 km in 8.4 seconds.

Com dimensões robustas: 4,55 m de comprimento, 1,86 m de largura, 1,61 m de altura e distância entre eixos de 2,73 m, o automóvel a princípio será comercializado somente no mercado chinês, mas há grandes chances de em breve alcançar outros mercados.
Até porque ele foi muito pensado de uma maneira global, priorizando não só espaço, mas potência e tecnologia. Para ter uma ideia, o motor é de última geração, o e-THP 16 e THP 200 que renderá de 163 cv a 200 cv, com o câmbio automático de seis velocidades, alimentados por uma bomba de alta pressão e um turbo compressor do tipo Twin Scroll.
O DS6 WR não será oferecido com tração nas quatro rodas, apenas nas dianteiras, pois terá o Grip Control, uma tecnologia que controla o modo de tração ao tipo de solo escolhido pelo condutor.
Com um visual requintado, revestimento com dois tons de couro, alumínio polido nas portas, volante esportivo com quatro raios e comandos. Além disso possui um painel semelhantes a outros da linha DS, composto por tela multimídia, ar-condicionado digital, LCD touch screen ao centro e um grande teto solar panorâmico.
Sem contar os recursos como iluminação vermelha nos puxadores das portas e assentos dos bancos com costuras diferenciadas, as quais remetem à pulseiras de relógios semelhante ao do DS5.
O lançamento do SUV foi escolhido para ser na China, pois hoje é o país que mais compra automóveis no mundo, além de ter sido o país onde o Citröen DS obteve maior aceitação, mas especula-se que venha para o Brasil no final de 2015.

Esse SUV cheio de estilo e personalidade conta com um ambiente requintado, com bancos revestidos de couro, alumínio polido nas portas, volante com base achatada e tela sensível ao toque.
Também chama atenção o botão giratório no console central, que comanda o sistema de tração apenas dianteira, mas feito para se adaptar a qualquer tipo de terreno.
Inspirado no conceito Wild Rubis, o Citroën DS 6WR é o mais novo integrante da linha de luxo DS e compartilha a mesma plataforma do C4 Picasso. O modelo ainda segue algumas tendências dos conceitos iniciais da gama Citroën DS, como o formato DS Wings, que é a moldura cromada em volta da grade e dos faróis, marca registrada da nova identidade da linha, inaugurada no sedã chinês DS 5LS.
