Eva Twardokens

Eva’s life is about athletics and movement. She is a Level 3 CrossFit certified trainer and is also certified in kettle bell training, run endurance, basic barbell, and olympic weightlifting. Her expertise in these areas comes from her assisting the Coaches in these specialties.

She travels around the country to assist Mark Rippetoe and Lon Kilgore in the CrossFit Basic Barbell Certifications, Mike Burgener in his CrossFit Olympic Weightlifting Certifications, Jeff Martone in the CrossFit Kettlebell Certifications, and will join Brian McKenzie in some of the CrossFit Running Certifications.

Her opportunity to work with these experts time and time again, has taught her the material inside out. She has worked with the founder and creator of CrossFit, Coach Glassman since the very beginning and has been working closely with him for 10 years!

Eva is an accomplished athlete herself, competing in alpine skiing in two Olympic games. She is a six-time national champion, a World Champion Bronze medalist, and the World Technical Skiing Champion. Last year she changed sports and won the Masters National Championship Weightlifting title, where she broke two American records, one in the clean and jerk, and one in the total.

Featured Coach: Eva Twardokens, Part 2 – The Evolution

When Eva Twardokens discovered CrossFit it wasn’t like it is today. There weren’t affiliates in just about every town and multiple locations in big cities. Nobody knew the word CrossFit and the CrossFit Games had not even been dreamt up yet.

When Eva Twardokens discovered CrossFit it wasn’t like it is today. There weren’t affiliates in just about every town and multiple locations in big cities. Nobody knew the word CrossFit and the CrossFit Games had not even been dreamt up yet.

Eva first encountered the concepts of CrossFit when she met the co-founders Greg and Lauren Glassman at a local spin class. They were the instructors, Eva was a regular student, and Greg convinced her to start private training with him.

Eva, a newly retired two-time Olympian and twelve-year veteran of the U.S. Ski Team, was looking for some stimulating training to keep her busy and in shape. Greg offered to train her for free and after one training session, Eva was hooked.

Eva shared the early beginnings of CrossFit:

[Greg] just continued to train me for free and I continued to see him. I remember there was a point where we were doing clean and jerks at this gym; it was called Spa Fitness, so you can imagine they weren’t really into Olympic lifting. I was clean and jerking like 115 pounds, it wasn’t a big deal, but at the time I was learning it, it was much heavier than any other woman was doing. I remember I lost a jerk and we had metal plates on the bar and it came crashing down. Greg and I called it the “Big Bang Theory” – a couple days later we went to breakfast and he said, “Eva, I don’t know what I’m going to do, I just got let go from Spa Fitness. I can’t train there anymore. I don’t even know how to tell Lauren.” And that’s when he started his own little place in a jiu-jitsu gym and we were working out on matting and we had a couple pieces of equipment, but we were doing CrossFit. We were doing the very beginnings of CrossFit. And of course it grew. He eventually went to a little bit bigger jiu-jitsu place.

And eventually the very first CrossFit gym would be opened in Santa Cruz. Eva herself years later would operate a CrossFit affiliate in the same town – CrossFit Santa Cruz Central. Her journey from athlete, to private client, to trainer was also influenced by Greg Glassman:

He was like, “Eva, you need to start training people.” So I started doing this class at the jiu-jitsu studio, like once or twice a week, in the evening. I charged people five dollars if they could afford it, if not they could just come in. I taught the class and I was in dental hygiene school at this time, so it was kind of nice for me to teach the class because I took the class as well. I made up the workout and then we all worked out. There wasn’t anything technical – it was all bodyweight, pull ups and sit ups, we threw a kettlebell in there a few times, we had some rings and we had a rower. Then it just started to trickle, a little bit more equipment, and a little bit more equipment. And that’s how I started being a trainer.

I personally remember very clearly the first time Eva T. coached me. Perhaps it was the twentieth time she yelled, “No rep” in my face that made it stick. For many their first impression of Eva is the now infamous “Nasty Girls” video.

And while the women in the video may have seemed like superhuman superstars, the reality of making those old school videos was not too glamorous.

I still remember the day we did Nasty Girls and the moment we were done I got in my car. I had to drive to San Francisco to fly to New York. I took a red-eye and first thing in the morning I was on the set to call some ski races. That’s what my CrossFitting was like and how all those videos were – I’d get done with my day of dental hygiene and go down to the gym and they’d have something cooked up and we would do it.

These days a lot more people have heard of CrossFit and Eva has been more of an observer to the spectacle the last few years, rather than at the forefront.

It’s interesting, I mean right now I kind of feel like I’m in the bleachers watching the car race. You know, I just feel a little bit on the sidelines, although training isn’t my life and training other people is my life, watching the evolution of CrossFit, it’s going so fast that I really feel like I’m spectating. I feel like it’s changed a lot from the beginning and, you know, I’ve been doing it since 1998 so when people come up to me and they go, “You ever heard of CrossFit?” I’m kind of like, “Uh, the only reason I wouldn’t have heard about CrossFit is because I’m senile and I can’t remember ten years ago when I started.”

Regardless of how CrossFit, the CrossFit Games, and Eva T. herself have all evolved, she still regards it as a good place for her to have started and as a gift that Greg Glassman gave her:

I think CrossFit has been a really good base for me. It’s been a great tool to be exposed to a lot of different types of movement, because it is so diverse, but it also has helped me really trim the fat and decide what the best way to do CrossFit is and what the best movements are. There are some movements I’ve scrapped that I don’t use anymore, and it’s helped me branch out into different parts of the industry. I have to thank CrossFit and Greg Glassman for that.

And what comes next? What is the next evolution of Eva T.?

I have in the works now a consulting site that should be up in mid-March [evatstrengthandconditioning.com]. I know I’ll be offering programming for people. My hope is to be able to do distance training with people, give them a little bit of guidance on nutrition and keep an eye on them – specifically ski racers who haven’t made the U.S. Ski Team yet, who don’t know what to do to get prepared for the season. I can help folks like that. I train all types of people from elderly to kids. It would be for anyone that’s interested in getting a program from me, from what I’ve learned in the industry, streamlining things to the most effective things you can do. If you’re just trying to be healthy I really think the minimum effective dose is what’s going to be right and that’s to maintain body composition and a level of healthy fitness. I’m still toying with what that is, but it’s something like sprinting, lifting, skill work, and play.

Come back next week to learn more about Eva’s approach to coaching clients, her suggestions for new coaches, and how she rid her Olympic demons through weightlifting.

“The Girls.” Where Are They Now?

Angie, Barbara, Chelsea, Diane, Elizabeth and Fran – to anyone in the non-CrossFit speaking world these names hold little weight but to us, they’re almost biblical – “The Girls” – or original benchmarks.

Since 2003, their roll call has expanded, but if you ask Coach Greg Glassman the intent has always been the same.

“I thought that anything that left you flat on your back looking up at the sky, asking what the f*** happened to me deserved a female’s name.”

Turns out when we started digging, the origins of some of ‘The Girls’ are a little more poetic.

In lieu of several benchmarks popping up on mainsite of late (and even testing athletes at the 2019 Games) we thought it was time to become better acquainted.

Kelly.

Back in the early days of CrossFit.com, the scores of Kelly Moore were almost unattainable and provided the ultimate benchmark.

The story goes after smashing another one of the daily workouts, she attributed yet another impressive performance to the fact there was no running, wall balls or box jumps in said workout. Not long after, “Kelly” was born.

Nicole.

Remember the old Open Tips? That’s Nicole.

Nicole Carroll was one for the original ‘Nasty Girls’ (if you haven’t seen the clip, it’s a must watch!) and remains CrossFit’s Director of Training and Certification.

AMRAP 20 Minutes

400m run

Max reps pull-ups

This WOD was originally posted unnamed on mainsite in 2006.

“I literally did that workout … and maxed out every set of pull-ups, so basically every time I got on the pullup bar I went to failure,” Nicole told the CrossFit Podcast.

She describes how it “wrecked” and “humiliated” her, prompting Coach Glassman to give her naming rights.

Lynne.

Lynne Pitts with Coach Glassman

Lynne Pitts is also still a CrossFit Inc. employee and when she saw this workout posted in 2004, she knew it was her jam!

5 Rounds (for max reps)

Bodyweight bench press

Pull-ups

A former powerlifter in the 1980s and 90s, Lynne’s original score – 77 bench presses (115lbs) and 95 pull-ups (30 in the first round!) – was enough to get Coach Greg Glassman’s attention.

“Congratulations, Lynne! This workout will bear your name from here on!” he posted on mainsite at the time.

Annie.

That original Nasty Girls video also shot Annie Sakamoto to CrossFit fame.

She was an athlete and trainer at Glassman’s first gym and has since made several trips to the CrossFit Games, even competing in the ‘Legends’ category at the Rogue Invitational, 2019.

50-40-30-20-10

Double Unders

Sit-ups

If ever there was a CrossFitter who deserved naming rights, it’s Annie. Now a mom, she still coaches at her own affiliate in Santa Cruz and commentators regularly.

“I’m almost positive it was Lauren (Glassman) who made up the workout Annie, not Greg. Not sure why though,” Annie told the Morning Chalk Up.

For many athletes (myself included) it’s often the first benchmark completed as prescribed. The workout, like it’s namesake, a fan favorite.

Eva.

The third ‘Nasty Girl’ is Eva Twardokens or Eva T.

She was one of Coach Glassman’s original clients, after they met in a spin class. The two-time Olympian would go on to become a Level 3 trainer and a specialist coach in weightlifting, running and kettlebells (the latter both appearing in her namesake WOD)

5 Rounds For Time

800 meter Run

30 Kettlebell Swings (2/1.5 pood)

30 Pull-Ups

Eva’s still very much a part of the CrossFit community.

You may have seen the hashtag #Eva4Eva earlier this year, prompting athletes to do this workout after Eva T was badly injured in a plane accident. A few months on, we hear Eva’s working hard and making progress with her recovery.

Amanda.

It was the first WOD of the 2010 CrossFit Games to honor Amanda Miller, who’d competed at the Games a year earlier.

Amanda passed away at just 24-years-old, losing a battle with a recurring melanoma. Amanda had always blogged about her CrossFit journey, even sharing her final weeks with the community.

You may be more familiar with this variation – Amanda.45 – the third event at the 2017 Crossfit Games which increased the rep scheme to 13-11-9-7-5.

The ‘Fran’ favorites.

Many of ’The Girls’ are not named after anyone, but when we took the topic up with Greg Glassman, he said they all have one thing in common.

“They are tests for everybody, whether they take you 45 minutes, or two.”

Coach Glassman has always held to the fact his favorite workout is Fran.

“I hate that thing!”

21-15-9

Thruster (95/65 lbs)

Pull-ups

“Anyone who flies through Fran has no respect for a 95-pound thruster – their one rep max is much, much higher,” he told the Morning Chalk Up.

We put it to him, will the Girls one day become stale or will they always remain the yard stick?

“If the girls were all to disappear tomorrow, we would create new ones, as well as a quick way to name them. And if you don’t like ours, pick your own.”

For Eva T – CrossFit Oakdale

On Saturday, at 10am, we will perform the CrossFit benchmark, Eva. Eva Twardokens recently sustained serious injuries following a plane crash on California’s Central Coast. There will ONLY be a 10am class.

As a true renaissance woman and Santa Cruz resident, Eva T. was one of the original CrossFit fire breathers. She started CrossFit in the early 2000s after ending her Olympic skiing career. With that a background, she was a perfect crash test dummy for Greg Glassman. Eva T provided statistical data of what an elite athlete looked like, and how they could be pushed.

Eva T appeared in a ton CrossFit media in the early to mid 2000’s. She was beautiful, she was fit, she was mentally tough. She attacked workouts with athleticism and grit. She was one of 3 athletes in what was probably CrossFit’s first viral video, Nasty Girls.

As CrossFit grew, Eva T was on the Level 1 staff, opened gyms, became a National Champion masters weightlifter, and became a pilot of acrobatic airplanes.

Eva T said her favorite workout was “Helen,” so when Coach made a workout for Eva, it was Helen on steroids. We will perform Eva at 10a on Saturday. Check out Eva T’s fundraiser page.

CrossFit community raises funds for Eva Twardokens

SANTA CRUZ — CrossFit gyms in Santa Cruz and around the world are raising funds for one of their own, Eva Twardokens, who was injured in a plane crash one week ago and remains in critical condition.

A GoFundMe account named Team Eva T is organized by friend and owner of CrossFit Santa Cruz Central, Annie Kimiko Sakamoto, who she attributes Twardokens to getting her started in CrossFit 16 years ago.

“She’s a passionate athlete and friend,” Sakamoto said. “She really loves life.”

As of 5 p.m. Friday, nearly $35,500 was raised of the $50,000 goal, which speaks of how great the CrossFit community is, Sakamoto said.

“It’s typical of CrossFit, it’s a tight-knit community,” she said. “They’ll do anything to help each other, even if they’ve never met.”

While not a surprise the community has come together, Sakamoto added that it’s still “pretty humbling.”

She explained that all of the money will go toward Twardokens’ “long road to recovery.”

Twardokens is one of the original “Nasty Girls” in CrossFit, and is also the namesake of the benchmark workout “Eva.”

Today, gyms will complete the workout named Eva — five rounds for time: 800 meter run, 30 kettlebell swings and 30 pullups.

Twardokens is also a surfer and former Olympic skier and was inducted into the U.S. Skiing and Snowboard Hall of Fame.

According to the FAA, the yellow Bellanca Citabria that crashed carrying two passengers at the Monterey Bay Academy Airport in Watsonville was registered to Twardokens, a resident of Aptos.

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash.

Perception by Eva Twardokens

This article was originally written specifically about the role of perception in alpine skiing. It was written by my father, George Twardokens (“Dr. T.,” as he is known), and was published in the journal Professional Ski Instructors of America. We wanted to bring some new concepts and prescriptions to the CrossFit community to get “black boxed” and refined. This article uses some of the words of my father’s article verbatim and removes most of the skiing specifics to discuss the importance of perception in training for all types of athletes, as well as soldiers, police, firefighters and others who depend on their physical readiness.

Athletes looking to improve their skills often concentrate on how they move, but they’d be wise to focus also on which movements they select and how quickly they respond. Training to reduce response time through enhanced perception—as if by instinct—can make for better performance on demand.

Perception is a topic that’s generating wide general interest these days. In his bestselling book Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking, Malcolm Gladwell examines what happens inside a person’s brain during the nanosecond between when it receives stimuli and then prompts decisions and actions the person isn’t even aware of. Gladwell scrutinizes the way the brain absorbs information immediately and then generates responses that we often consider to be intuition but that, in reality, are part of a complicated process of neural actions and reactions.
